Who is in the photo at right?

I’m the human (Nikki May, author). The beast draped around my shoulders is Fela, my standard schnauzer. He’s seven and a real mummy’s boy.

Fela’s sister, Lola (standard schnauzer) is out of shot, she’s looking at us both disdainfully and rolling her eyes.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

My first coffee of the day, I usually have four or five. As always, it’s made by Peter (husband, editor, plot advisor and barista).

What's brewing?

We live in the middle of nowhere, our nearest coffee shop is a fifteen minute drive away, so husband has become an expert at making my iced coffees. His recipe: One shot of espresso made with a Nespresso Firenze Arpeggio capsule, four squirts of sugar-free vanilla syrup, a dash of skimmed milk and five ice cubes. Chuck all of that in our KitchenAid blender and pulse a few times. Served with a paper straw.

Any treats for you or the dogs on this occasion?

Today was a good day. Husband served my iced coffee with a slice of white sourdough toast with butter and marmite – just the way I like it. Of course I shared it with Fela, he adores toast.

How were you and the schnauzers united?

I first saw Fela when he was six weeks old and it was love at first sight. That dome head, those gorgeous eyes, that button nose. His sister Lola joined us a year later, they are distant cousins.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Fela is named after the late and great Fela Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat, a Nigerian hero and a political insurrectionist. I also call him Roo for reasons even I cannot fathom.

Lola is a proper little madam, she’s ruled the roost since she was nine weeks old, she’s a showgirl and her name was inspired by "Copacabana."

Have your dogs inspired you to create any fictional canines?

Yes! My first dog, Tosca (he’s now chasing squirrels in heaven), got a walk-in part in my debut novel, Wahala.

Squirrel.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Squeaky ball for Fela. We have to have five minutes of chasing the ball around the bedroom every morning.

Lola doesn’t do toys, she’s all about squirrels.

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

Fela fell in love with Kiwi, my neighbour’s chocolate lab, when he was a puppy. She was a bit of a cougar – about eight years older than him. She’s now in heaven but he still wags his tail when we say, “Kiwi”.

Do the schnauzers do more to help or hinder your writing?

Mostly help – my best ideas come on dog walks and they insist on a ninety-minute trek every morning. They are less good at editing though – this is Lola [photo left] interrupting me at work.

What is each dog's best quality?

Fela is loyal, Lola is a comedienne.

If your schnauzers could change one thing about Dorset, what would it be?

Slower squirrels. Ideally snail-paced and unable to climb trees.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

‘Do you really think that if you sit at the foot of the tree barking for forty-minutes, the squirrel will jump into your mouth? Seriously?’

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should voice them?

Fela – Will Ferrell (doing his Elf voice).

Lola – Jodie Comer (as Villanelle).

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

There is no problem that can’t be resolved with a long walk on the beach followed by fish & chips.

Andrew Peterson & Gia, Lilli, and Fiona

Who is in the photo at right?

My wife, Carla, me, Andy Peterson, of course and our dogs – all female. The one out front is Gia, she’s a Spinone Italiano and is 1 year old. The proud black Giant Schnauzer is Lilli – she is definitely high energy and 2-1/2 in the photo. The big girl is Fiona, an Irish Wolfhound also one year old. We’re photographed at an open public preserve along the central coast of California. It’s a great place to walk our dogs

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

It’s a routine event with me! Every day I’m up with my pooches by 5:30am, with the coffee maker already brewing on auto. After adding half and half and squirt of Stevia, I’m out the back door into our fenced patio area with my girls. We live remotely in southern Monterey County surrounded by beautiful oak-covered hillsides and native grasses; lots of pines too. Here’s our morning view looking north on a clear day [below, left].

What's brewing?

Home prep includes a Cuisinart drip coffeemaker as my brew master. Yes, it’s that simple. I like a light roast that I purchase from the Naga Café, a local coffee house about 20 miles away near Lake Nacimiento. If you’re ever in the area and drop in, tell Tony I sent you. When I’m at Naga my order is a hot, triple shot, 16 oz latte with whole-milk and one Splenda. Okay, sometimes two Splendas.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

No, not really. Carla keeps our girls on a pretty healthy diet. Since childhood, we’ve always had dogs in our lives. We’re not really strict with their diet, but when we give treats we use glucosamine chewies, chewable vitamin C or something I’m eating - you know the last bite of my sandwich, a chip, etc.... Life without dogs is no life at all – at least that’s true in our home.

How were you and your dogs united?

We made an earnest effort to find the best breeders in the western states. We don’t mind supporting breeders working hard to keep improving their breed of choice. All of the breeders screened us with a telephone interview and written questionnaire – which we appreciated. We also traveled to the National Spinone Specialty dog show in Seattle to familiarize ourselves with the breed and meet a few breeders. It was a fun trip and we met some very interesting people and learned a lot.

Lilli, our Giant Schnauzer, came from Skansen Kennel in Sebastopol which is about an hour north of San Francisco (we’ve owned 2 other Giant Schnauzers from this breeder). Fiona our Wolfhound came from Taryn’s Kennel in Gainesville, Texas, and Gia’s from Alla Festa Kennel in Rapid City, South Dakota.

In case you’re wondering, we drove over 4,000 miles to pick up Fiona and Gia. Lilli went with us on the trip. Traveling by car with three dogs isn’t as bad as it sounds. We all survived!

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

We usually try to name our dogs after their ethnic origin. Lilli is named Lillith, a very old German name. Lilli’s also known as the “Monster” and “Gomer Girl.” Gia’s breed originates from Italy. She’s also referred to as “Peanut” and “Brown Sugar.” Fiona is an old Irish name and I especially like it because I love Princess Fiona in Shrek! She’s also referred to as “Lanky” and “Big Dog.”

Do Fiona, Lilli and Gia do more to help or hinder your writing?

It’s really a mix of both. I love being at my computer with all three of the girls at my feet – asleep of course. After a few hours they stir and remind me that I’ve been sitting too long. So I get up, walk them down two flights of stairs, grab another cup of coffee, and take them outside for some playtime. Of course, the day is a little different when Carla’s home.

Have any actual dogs ever inspired dogs in your fiction?

Absolutely! The working dogs of law enforcement agencies and the military inspired me to include them in my series. Nathan McBride, the hero of my novels, owns two Giant Schnauzers who are trained tactical dogs. I chose the Giant Schnauzer breed for a couple reasons. First of all, we owned 2 at the time I was writing First to Kill. Secondly, in Germany (as well as other countries), Giant Schnauzers are used right along side the German Shepard and Doberman as police dogs. If you ever see one in person you’ll understand why. The Giant Schnauzer commands a presence that makes a person pause before approaching. It must be something about their size, posture, color, and those high pointy ears. Their absolute fearlessness is another great characteristic when it comes to tactical work. To see Lilli jump in the air – like a Frisbee dog – is a sight to behold. Giant Schnauzers are not only athletic, they’re incredibly strong.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

All of the above for these three. Fiona can destroy anything made of rubber, including Kong toys. She loves to chew on hard toys that taste like wood. Gia loves to prance around with a toy football in her mouth. She also loves the hard wood-tasting toys. Lilli just wants to run, chase the ball. Her favorite thing to grab is a dirty sock out of the hamper – fortunately, she just carries it around and doesn’t eat it. Gia, on the other hand, eats just about everything. We’ve avoided serious vet trouble – so far…

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

With Lilli it’s literally anything that moves.

Gia’s all about birds – after all, she’s a hunting dog breed. [Gia "pointing" hummingbirds; photo left] It’s funny to note that she doesn’t like getting her feet wet. Go figure. I guess she’s high maintenance.

Fiona watches yellowjackets and butterflies, but she’ll chase down anything and anyone running away from her. She also focuses on Black-tailed deer moving through our property in the early morning and late evening.

Who is each dog's best pet-pal?

Carla is everyone’s best pal – she takes care of all of us!

When it comes to the dogs, Gia loves to wrestle with Lilli, Fiona loves to chase Lilli. And even little Gia will take on big Fiona at times. I refer to Gia as little, but she’s a 73 pound dog. Lilli weighs about the same, but is taller and much more athletic. Fiona weighs in at 140 pounds – we’re very thankful she’s a gentle giant.

What is each dog's best quality?

Lilli – Alert. Protective. Loyal. Affectionate. Wants to please and doesn’t shed!

Fiona – Gentle, but watch that tail. It’s at the perfect height to inflict major damage to a certain body part, or should I say “two” body parts! She’s super affectionate, but independent and very quiet. She hardly ever barks.

Gia – Goofy. Docile. Smart. Very tactile (she always want to be touching you, leaning on you, or resting her head on your foot, etc…) But she also stubborn!

If Fiona, Lilli and Gia could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

I believe my girls would want people to be better stewards of their pets. Care for them properly. Don’t let them get overweight. If you don’t have the time to spend with dogs, don’t get any!!! Also be mindful of your dog’s activities, especially when they’re in public places. In other words, please pick up after your dog!!! Be responsible! The reason so many places don’t allow dogs is because people don’t act responsibly.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

What do you dream about?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should voice them?

Wow, this is a tough question. Since I have female dogs this is especially hard. I guess my fall back position will again be based on ethnic origin. Gia would be good with Sophia Loren’s voice. Even though she’s Danish, I’d pick Brigitte Nielsen for Lilli’s voice. For Fiona I’d go with Saoirse Ronan (Atonement and The Lovely Bones); she’s not only Irish but is known for her excellent grasp of performing many accents. I’m thinking a couple of my choices definitely show my age.

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Wag more, bark less!!

Lancey Morris & Henderson

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Lancey Morris and I'm the baker/blogger behind sweetlancey.com. I live in Sydney with my three year old Miniature Schnazuer, Henderson. He has an instagram page which he tries to update regularly (henderson_the_schnauz), and loves broccoli.

Today we stopped to get a coffee at a local cafe on the way to the park. Henderson is a nightmare without his daily caffeine hit so I try to make the effort.

What's brewing?

I'm actually enjoying a French Earl Grey cup of tea!

Any treats for you or Henderson on this occasion?

Henderson is nibbling on a vegan doggy biscuit I brought with me, and I'm trying my hardest not to order a cookie for myself.

How were you and Henderson united?

Henderson and I were united when he was a 12 week old puppy. He was tiny and 90% personality, 10% beard.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

We wanted a name that suited a dog with a well trimmed beard and salt and pepper eyebrows, and Henderson seemed just right. He also goes by Hend, Baby H, and The Hend of the King, because he loves Game of Thrones.

Does Henderson have a role at Sweet Lancey HQ?

Because Sweet Lancey is a vegan food blog, unfortunately too much 'paws on' involvement would lead to being shut down by a food authority. Henderson's role is more focused on cleaning up fallen food, lending an ear, and of course, reminding me every day why animals should be our friends, not our dinner.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

The local cats aren't too fond of Hend, but he seems to get along with the postman just fine. No squirrel encounters thus far, but he's still young.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Hend loses interest in toys very quickly, and much prefers to destroy our furniture.

Who is Henderson's best pet-pal?

Henderson is a social butterfly and likes to interact with everyone he meets, though I have it on good authority that he spends a lot of time at the local groomer with a dog mysteriously called Ruby. No surname, no regrets.

What is Henderson's best quality?

Henderson's best quality is his affectionate and loyal nature. He is always up for a cuddle and likes to lie as close to your face as is humanly (or dogly?) possible.

It's a good thing this question only asks for his best quality, because I really could write an essay on the dynamic Schnauzer personality.

Where is Henderson's favorite outdoor destination?

Henderson enjoys the classics, like parks or anywhere with grass. We've taken him to much more exciting places, littered with toys and swarming with dogs, but we'll always find him sniffing a patch of grass by himself. It's the simple things in life.

If Henderson could change one thing about you, what would it be?

He'd probably change the fact that I don't let him eat everything in his path, including my personal effects.

If Henderson could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

What a great question! I'd probably ask if he was happy, or if he means to shame people by staring so deeply into their eyes they feel he sees into their soul.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Henderson could speak, who should voice him?

I think Michael Cera would do a good job, or perhaps Larry David.

What advice would Henderson give if asked?

I think he'd say, 'Take risks. Life is too short not to lick a stranger's sandwich in the park.'

Elisabeth Crisp & Jazzy

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Elisabeth Crisp. I blog everyday at crisplyspoken.com. I’m also writing a novel.

My dog is Jazzy, a four-year-old female miniature schnauzer.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Jazzy and I have coffee almost every day at our favorite park. We eat. We walk. We sit in the car or at a picnic table while I write.

What's brewing?

Dark French roast, topped with Nestle’s Quik and soy milk. The Quik addiction started when I wasn’t able to get to the supermarket. It’s good. You should try it.

Any treats for you or Jazzy on this occasion?

Breakfast tacos for me. Milkbone Mini’s for Jazzy.

How were you and Jazzy united?

Jazzy was a two and half pound puppy when I scooped her out of a litter, living in a Rubbermaid container in a residential backyard. She fit in the palm of my hand.

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

Her official name is Jasmine Tea, named after my favorite green tea blend. It’s the beverage I drank while grieving over the loss of her predecessor, also a schnauzer.

When she was a puppy, I called her Hoover. She hoovered up things she shouldn’t, just like a vacuum cleaner.

Does Jazzy do more to help or hinder your writing?

Jazzy is a typical schnauzer. Her day job is barking. She talks to the mailman, the neighbor’s cat, our abundance of squirrels, the blades of grass blowing in the wind. It drives me nuts until she’s gone to the groomers. Then, the house is too quiet. So, Jazzy helps me write, but her help is annoying.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your writing?

There’s a little dog, who climbs mountains, in my current work in progress. Taco was inspired by Jasmine.

Cat, postman, squirrel…?

She trees the squirrels in my backyard. She caught one once, so they give her room. She’s very quick.

She loves toys. When I come home, she meets me at the door with a her plush monkey or pink pig. She follows me around until I toss it for her to fetch.

Who is Jazzy's best pet-pal?

She loves other dogs. She's friends with a Great Dane, Thalia. They meet at the park, and Jazzy isn’t intimidated by their size difference.

What is Jazzy's best quality?

She loves me with persistence.

If Jazzy could change one thing about Texans, what would it be?

Their politics. Jazzy is a liberal.

If Jazzy could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Where is my missing black loafer?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Jazzy could speak, who should voice her?

Emma Watson. Jazzy sounds like Hermione Granger when she barks. She’s also very smart.

What advice would Jazzy give if asked?

Quit sitting there pretending to write and take me for a walk. It always helps.

Marilyn Pond & Gracie and Trudy

Who is in the photo at right, and in the one just below?

My name is Marilyn Pond, a mom, a grandmom, and a widow. I retired early in life after knowing how precious life is. I doubt anyone says at the pearly gates "I wish I would have worked more." After retiring I took up quilting and it became my passion.

My two fur babies, Gracie (an eleven year-old Poochon - half Poodle and half Bichon) and five year-old Trudy (a Miniature Schnauzer), let me live with them.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Our mornings always includes coffee for me, a snooze for Gracie, with Trudy keeping a watchful eye out for squirrels.

What's brewing?

Peet's K-Cup.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

Gracie needs a couple of meds each day which are neatly tucked inside a flavored pill pocket. Trudy gets a piece of the pill pocket--just because.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Gracie was rescued after being in an abusive situation. She was given to the shelter which was told to put her to sleep because she nipped at the children. A small dog rescue group held her for 6 months and called me to see if I would take her because they were having trouble placing her. She was fearful especially around the face. We instantly connected. I renamed her Gracie thinking of the saying "There for the Grace of God go I."

My Mini Schnauzer is Trudy because she is German and Trudy is short for Gertrude.

How were you and your dogs united?

Gracie is a rescue; Trudy is from an acquaintance who breeds Mini Schnauzers.

How do your dogs help--or hinder--your quilting?

My girls love to spend time with me in my quilt room. And all my quilts are approved by one or the other before moving on to their next home.

Yes.

Squeaky-toy, ball, stick...?

Squeaky toy. It's all about finding and destroying the squeak.

Where is your dogs' favorite outdoor destination?

Any place that has smells telling a story.

Gracie is extremely loyal; Trudy is a love bug.

What's to change? Well, maybe to use less water.

Meg Rosenburg & Simon

Who is in the photo at right?

That's me, Meg Rosenburg, and Simon, my 10-year-old mini schnauzer, hanging out on campus at Caltech.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Simon normally keeps me company at home while I brew myself coffee with our pourover setup, but Caltech's Red Door Cafe has a lot of outdoor seating and Simon's always up for a field trip!

What's brewing?

My go-to coffee preparation (when I'm not making it myself at home) is a piping hot Americano. Sometimes I just want the flavor of espresso but the consistency of coffee, so there you go!

Any treats for you or Simon on this occasion?

I brought a few treats for Simon to entice him to take a photo with me. He's much more interested in them!

How were you and Simon united?

My husband and I adopted Simon four years ago after my aunt and uncle rescued him from a shelter. He didn't fit in with the other dogs there as well as they'd have liked, and we were already discussing getting a dog, so it worked out perfectly! He even gets to go back and visit all the time.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

My cousins named him Simon, but before that, the shelter called him London (because he's foggy grey maybe?). I don't know what his name might have been before that. He has a million nicknames - everything from Si-guy to Simon-dogger to Fluffernutter (I call him that sometimes).

You're a planetary scientist. Could we assume Simon's favorite constellation is Canis Major?

Maybe! I also like to think he's fond of that asteroid that looks like a bone (Kleopatra).

Squirrel for sure!

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Squeaky-toy, although he doesn't play much at all, and we had to teach him to play catch.

Where is Simon's favorite outdoor destination?

Simon is excited to go anywhere and he loves to walk (and drag you around, if you give him an inch!), but his favorite outdoor location is probably the dog beach. So many other dogs!

Who is Simon's best pet-pal?

Simon's best friend for the past few years has been my cousins' Doberman, Rex. Simon's never seemed to think of himself as a "small dog" - no reason not to wrestle with much bigger pals!

What is Simon's best quality?

Hard to pick one, but I think Simon's best quality is how much of a social creature he is - he knows which humans are in his pack, and he's always so happy to see us.

If Simon could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

I guess he might change their driving habits, so there would be less silly traffic and his humans could take him places more easily and quickly. But otherwise, Simon loves California - and he's never been anywhere with snow or much precipitation of any kind.

If Simon could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

I would ask him "What's the secret to living in the moment?" because it seems like such a good way to live life.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Simon could speak, who should voice him?

Maybe Jason Bateman? Or John Krasinski. When I imagine what Simon might be thinking (as if he were a person, which he's not), there's definitely a kind of innocent sarcasm that creeps in, especially when it comes to asking for more food!

Kathy Hewitt & Lucy

Who is in the photo at right?

Hi, that’s me, Kathy, in the photo. I live in San Diego, CA with my favorite canine companion, Lucy and my husband, Bill. I'm also a new author of the mystery-suspense: A Life Unbroken: The Alex McKay Series by K.M. Hewitt.

My dog’s name is Lucy, and when I come home I often announce: Lucy, I’m home! Those of you who remember the ‘I Love Lucy’ show will thoroughly understand! Lucy is our sweet, 14 year old standard schnauzer.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We are celebrating the release of my new paperback and ebook: A Life Unbroken: The Alex McKay series.

What's brewing?

First thing each morning, Lucy wakes me for her breakfast. I head into the kitchen to make a Nespresso coffee with coconut creamer and then prepare breakfast for Lucy. I also love to pick up vanilla lattes during the day! I just can’t make them as good at home.

Any treats for you or Lucy on this occasion?

Because Lucy is on a medication schedule, I try to make her treats a special time. Who likes to take pills? So I wrap (aka, hide) her pills in a bit of soft food, which she happily accepts, and then I follow up with a small treat. She used to try and ditch pill time but not anymore since I’ve learned how to disguise the pill taste. Now, Lucy reminds me when its pill-time because she knows two tasty treats are on the way. She never lets me forget that two treats are expected. What I didn’t expect and it came as a surprise, Lucy will stand in the doorway of my office to remind me its time for her pill, or should I say, pill-treats, and doesn’t run and hide anymore. It works for us! As for myself, I’m a born grazer and I love all the pastry treats that go so well with coffee!

How did Lucy get her name?

Lucy is named after Lucille Ball, one of the funniest comedians that always made me laugh. Her shows seem timeless with the same funny issues in life today.

How were you and Lucy united?

We adopted Lucy at 4 months of age and she been a wonderful, lively and engaging companion ever since.

Are there any Lucy-inspired dogs in your fiction?

Absolutely! Dogs, and animals in general, have been a part of my life from a very young age. Dogs especially, have always been there for me, through thick and thin. They love you endlessly and are always happy to see you walk through the door. I love so many things about dogs. In A Life Unbroken, Alex McKay has two canine companions that are very important in her life.

Does Lucy do more to help or hinder your writing?

Lucy actually helps my writing in a variety of ways. She reminds me to take a break from my work. She'll appear in the doorway and stand there until she gains my attention. Then, I'll realize it’s pill and treat time for Lucy, or she needs a bio-break, or both! Lucy quietly lays nearby wherever I am and checks in on me from time to time. Just knowing she is nearby is always a source of comfort to me.

Who is Lucy's best pet-pal?

Now, I’m Lucy’s best pal, although up until last May, her best bud and constant companion was a rescue dog named Schoobie. We lost him to bone cancer and we were all at quite a loss for him. Schoobie was a 1 year old standard poodle rescue when he arrived 12 years ago, and in very poor health. On the day Schoobie arrived, he stood in a corner of our yard, shaking with fear. He was pretty frightened of his new environment and as my husband and I were deciding what to do next, Lucy looked around, picked up one of her stuffy toys, and placed it at Schoobie's feet, sat down and nodded towards Schoobie as if to say: It’s okay, you’re gonna love it here! From that day on, a very shy and sensitive Schoobie never left Lucy’s protective side. She took Schoobie under her wing for his entire life. We all miss him very much.

Where is Lucy's favorite outdoor destination?

Each morning and evening, Lucy looks forward to a walk around the neighborhood so she can greet other dogs.

Lucy seems to sense dogs who have had a tough life. She is kindest and most gentle towards them but doesn’t tolerate ill-behaved dogs. Lucy also has a funny and endearing side and we nicknamed her ‘Hoover’ because she walks around scooping up food crumbs off the tile.

If Lucy could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

Lucy would have the cars slow down since she has slowed down a bit crossing the street. Some drivers are too fast.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lucy could speak, which actor should do her voice?

I could definitely hear Helen Mirren’s voice. Lucy has a certain dignity about herself. Schnauzer folks would understand.

I brewed French Market Coffee & Chicory in the French press. It is now in my favorite mug with just a bit of cream and hazelnut syrup.

Macy loves her veggies. She's been chomping on a kale stalk.

How did Macy get her name? Any nicknames?

Macy came to us already named. She has a whole variety of nicknames, depending on the occasion. She usually only gets the full name treatment when she gets in trouble for barking at the air.

How were you and your dog united?

A former coworker was having to find new homes for her pets, including Macy, due to a family member's health issues. We adopted her when she was just over a year old.

Who is Macy's best pet-pal?

Once you cross the threshold, you are a friend. My parents have two mini-schnauzers as well, Sam and Tucker. Macy is about 1/3 of their size, but she's the boss lady. She loves play time with the boys. The jury is still out on her new German Shorthaired Pointer puppy cousin, Milo.

Where is Macy's favorite outdoor destination?

We have a fabulous new dog park in our community. There are so many new friends and so much sniffing to be had.

Tennis ball, giant squeaky Loofa dog, and a tiny stuffed duck.

...neighbors, children, air. Schnauzers love to bark at anything and anyone who passes by.

She would have me stay home all day. Snuggled up in bed until 10, snuggled up on the couch till 5, a trip to the dog park, and then back to the couch until it's time for bed.

I’m Susan Slater a southwest mystery writer and recent transplant from New Mexico. I currently live in Florida. I’m working on calling myself a “surf-side cowgirl” but I’m not quite there yet. The trek here with a cage full of canaries and two miniature Schnauzers—Toby and Tess—rivaled the Joad family’s move to CA. And here I am getting a puppy kiss from Toby with his sister, Tess, waiting in line.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Coffee every morning is an excuse to start the day on the back porch—in the summer down here, it’s called enjoy the outdoors before the humidity sets in. And, of course, I always have company. Today, however, was special—a carton full of my new book, Rollover, arrived late last night. Wow. Is there anything as exciting or gratifying as holding that first, “hot off the press” copy of your own work?

What's brewing?

I am such a coffee snob; I must have been a barista in another life. And talk about addiction, I can wake up in the middle of the night, chug a “shot” of espresso and fall back to sleep. My morning choice is a medium ground (of course, I grind my own) Kaldi brand Breakfast Blend. I do a “pour through” using a Chemex and filters.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

We almost always share a bagel and cream cheese—the Schnauzers prefer the addition of lox and capers.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Named in memory of a close friend’s first two Schnauzers. Tess also answers to “Poodie”, short for poodle. There’s poodle in the miniature Schnauzers’ family tree but some are more poodle-like than others. Tess can walk across a room on her hind legs. At eight and a half I wonder if she’s too old for Americas Got Talent?

How were you and your dogs united?

My vet in NM had a boarding kennel. One morning when I was putting my Belgian Sheepdog in for the weekend, my vet asked me if I wanted to see something cute. She’d just been up all night saving the life of a Schnauzer mother and her five puppies. Now at my age one would think I’d see the danger in looking at something small, warm, fuzzy . . . I looked at them, held them and reserved two!!!

How do your dogs help--or hinder—your writing?

I totally blame the Schnauzers for teaching me how to nap. Not that I equate chasing squirrels around the backyard to writing that particularly difficult ending, but I suppose both of us have earned a little downtime.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your published work?

A friend’s Rottweiler, Max, inspired Simon in the Dan Mahoney series. But writing about dogs is tough. Simon has his fifteen minutes of fame in Rollover—a scene that will bring tears to the eyes of all dog-lovers. No, no Simon isn’t injured—an author learns quickly never to maim a dog or he will suffer the wrath of his readers!

The third Dan Mahoney mystery is Hair of the Dog. Yeah, greyhound racing in Florida is the backdrop—the topic is great fun and I’m really into it but am scared to death something lithe and lovely will follow me home.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Stuffing-less toys that allow two Schnauzers to try and jerk each other off their feet are real favorites.

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

Anyone on two-legs who comes to the front door is an automatic best friend! Schnauzers are, however, one of the top five breeds of “warning barkers”. Yes, mine have a police record—a couple misdemeanors for being overly loud.

I’ve never owned dogs with such a high prey-drive! For the first three years of their lives we lived on a goat farm in the mountains of NM. The Schnauzers kept my barn absolutely rat-free. They really earned their dog food!! The chickens, however, were not impressed.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

They would like me to eat bacon three times a day—cook it really crispy and drop at least one slice each on the floor.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Danny DeVito and Goldie Hawn.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

I have 4 dogs, and I don’t take them to dog parks anymore because I don’t want them to pick up viruses, but I do walk them in the woods and fields nearby my home in Maine, and at a family’s cabin in New Hampshire. They do ride with me in my truck, however, and if I stop to pick up a drink and donut for my daughter, they always get a dog biscuit or two.

What's brewing?

I understand it is odd. Very odd. But I have never even tasted coffee. Occasionally, to try and fit in at social events, I will drink tea, but I don’t enjoy it. I drink ice water. Although, I do not have an attachment to the coffee bean, I do have an unshakeable attachment to the cocoa bean. I eat chocolate everyday, usually in the morning and at night. Sometimes in the afternoon, too, if it’s been one of those days.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

I feed my dogs raw. They love their meals. I divide their food so they can have a breakfast and a supper. Who would want to eat only once a day?! For treats, I feed them liver snaps, Canidae kibble, pieces of hotdog, and organic dog biscuits.

Do your dogs help or hinder your writing? Have they inspired any dogs in your fiction?

My dogs help and hinder. After I take them for a long walk, they’ll settle in my writing area, and I love them to be near me sleeping. If, however, it is rainy or too snowy and they don’t get a walk, they interrupt me constantly for attention.That’s when I break out the meat bones. They probably have caught on, which is why they continue to push their noses at me and climb onto my keyboard.

Yes, I always include my dogs in my writing. They inspire me to write. Period.

You are a photographer as well as a writer. Which are easier to photograph: dogs or horses?

Horses are easier to photograph because they don’t usually jump on me, get in my lap, or lick my face.

How did your dogs get their names? Any nicknames?

All females: My boxer’s name is Pilot. She is named after the Elton John song “Take Me to the Pilot.” My rescued dachshund/miniature schnauzer/poodle mix is named Dancer [photo right] after Elton John’s song “Tiny Dancer.” Skye, my youngest rescue, a dachshund/terrier mix, is named after Elton John’s song “Skyline Pigeon.” My three year old black German shepherd is named Runja. She is from her breeder's R litter and her name means run yes. I got her hoping she would be my running companion. She has some arthritis issues however, so she is just my all-around companion.

I used to have a pit bull mix named Wizard after Elton John’s version of “Pinball Wizard.” He died of a bone disease. He was supposed to be my running partner, too. I’ve since decided that it’s better for all of us if I have no job expectations for my dogs.

Regarding nicknames, I sometimes call Pilot, Pi and Runya, Run, but I think that’s more of a time shortage issue than an intentional nickname. Most often I don’t have to call them anything. They are always with me.

How were you and your dogs united?

The two rescues are the result of me failing at fostering. I bought Pilot when my daughter was 4 because I wanted an excellent dog with children and boxers are amazing that way. They happily put up with tons of gentle and not so gentle physical attention. I bought the German shepherd to run with because I wanted protection when I was out exercising in the evening.

Where do your dogs most like to visit on an outing?

They love to go to New Hampshire, my husband’s family’s cabin. There are hundreds of acres of fields and woods and a lake for them to swim. I put life jackets on them and we paddle all over the lake together.

Do the dogs have any non-canine pet pals?

Skye [photo left], the youngest rescue, loves the cats. She wrestles with them (sometimes they win), and they often sleep together on my bed.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick…?

Pilot is ball obsessive. I can’t let her have them for long or she’d never eat or sleep. She invents games where she puts the balls in shoes or buries them in a scatter rug and then finds them again. It’s not just balls, actually. She will obsess over apples, tomatoes, and rocks, too. Anything round. So I guess she is round obsessive. She talks to her squeaky toys.

Runja will chase anything. She’s not picky. The two little rescues will chew anything. They are not picky, but they clearly prefer dragging my clothes out of the laundry basket and into my writing studio.

What is each dog's best quality?

Runja’s loyalty and obedience.

Pilot’s goofiness.

Skye’s and Dancer’s playfulness. They are very funny.

If your dogs could change one thing about Mainers, what would it be?

That everyone in Maine would love to see them off leash having fun.

Hanifa Menen & Caesar

Who is in the photo at right?

This is a picture of me and my fur-baby Caesar. My name is Dr. Hanifa Menen and I am a Naturopathic Doctor working in Toronto and Oakville, Ontario. My practice is focused on cancer prevention, care and management. I also write at the Schnauzer Savvy blog. It's a useful read for not only schnauzer-parents, but for anyone interested in natural healing options for dogs in general, and for those who would like more information about training and various other tid-bits of doggy-info. My inspiration for the blog is my wonderfully smart, intelligent, and truly best-friend, Caesar. We are enjoying one of our typical relaxed Sunday afternoons at home today -- to celebrate the end of a busy morning of cooking for the week for both of us! Now it's time to really kick back and relax together!

What's brewing?

I am enjoying a nice Sumatran coffee (Starbucks, this is our favourite!), and Caesar is enjoying his lucky cup (filled with just a touch of water).

Today we are enjoying some home-made apple cake!

How were you and Caesar united?

After searching online for some length of time to find a breeder of miniature schnauzers in Ontario, my husband and I met Caesar at the breeder's home 4-weeks after his birth. We met his litter-mates too, but while deciding between him and his brother (we wanted a male dog) -- he gave us a lively bark as if to say "choose me" -- and we did. Picked him up from the breeder 4-weeks later and the ride home with him asleep in my lap had our hearts forever united.

How did Caesar get his name? Any aliases?

We knew the kid was going to have personality from the first day we met him. And we wanted him to have a powerful name for a small dog. Caesar Augustus seemed to match his "drive to win" energy... but had to respect his own roots, so "von Schnauzer" only seemed right.

Caesar has his own YouTube channel. What are a couple of your favorite videos of his tricks?

Yes, since we decided that Caesar was going to be a "Dogtor" (as close to his parents' profession as possible) we are determined to help him learn as much as he can. A couple of my favourite videos are on his YouTube channel DogtorCaesar: "Remember My Name" and "Caesar Moves Like Jagger", although he really showed us his smarts with one of his original performances in "Lord of the Rings."

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Generally scared/wary of cats, will bark at the postman (or anyone else who enters his space -- even visual space), will pull at squirrels when we're walking him, but resists doing so with our verbal command of "co-existence."

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Loves each of these, especially if just passed to him from me or his Dad, but he does have a particular weakness for soft and squeaky rubber chickens!!

Does Caesar have a favorite place to go for outings?

This year we discovered a beautiful trail through a forest in Oakville... this has turned into Caesar's favourite place to visit this year!

Who is Caesar's best pet-pal?

Caesar's pet-pals are largely the inanimate variety. He loves to hang out with his "buddies" -- here [photo left] he's hanging out at the window with Elephant, Snoopy and Monkey... Although we also have pet budgies, Caesar is never able to get close enough to really "bond" with them!!

What is Caesar's best quality?

That would have to be his commanding presence! Aside from his good looks, he will make sure that you will notice him (often through barking) and in no time he will win you over with his charm (likely with the goal of getting a treat from you!).

If Caesar could change one thing about Torontonians, what would it be?

Stop rushing!! Caesar would want Torontonians to slow down. Rushing about without a true appreciation of nature and the basic joys of really connecting with one another, is something he just doesn't understand. Caesar would certainly want Torontonians to stop to smell the roses (and trees, fire hydrants, each other...).

If Caeser could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

What does love smell like? (Of course, I would want to hear him answer "our home" or "Mom.")

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Caeser could speak, who should voice him?

Joe Pesci (no profanities in the script, but his voice is perfect!).

Matthew Buchholz & Otis

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Matthew Buchholz and I’m a writer and artist who runs Alternate Histories, where I digitally insert monsters, robots, aliens & others into vintage historical scenes.

My first book, Alternate Histories of the World, just came out through Perigee. But more importantly, I’m having coffee with my dog Otis, who is a 4 1/2 year old male schnauzer/poodle mix (I think. He’s a rescue so who knows what he is?).

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We come to Commonplace Voluto Coffee several times a week, since it’s just a few blocks from my house. I work from home and it’s great to have a place to come to when I need to take a break, and all the staff here know Otis as well.

What's brewing?

Commonplace roasts their own coffee, so this is their espresso sumatra in an Americano.

Any treats for you or Otis on this occasion?

Sometimes I’ll get a muffin or cookie from the in-house baker, Drew’s Pie Supply - she makes great vegan granola bars too! Otis usually has a peanut butter cookie when he gets home.

How were you and Otis united?

When I first moved to Pittsburgh, I worked at Animal Friends, a local animal shelter & advocacy group, for about a year and a half. It was a fantastic job -- working or volunteering at an animal shelter is great because no matter how bad your day is, you can always go pet a dog or play with a kitten and you’ll instantly feel better. Otis came through our shelter as part of a July 4th rescue...the Fourth of July is one of the worst times of the year for animals to run away or get lost because of parties and all the loud noises. Otis came into the shelter and we connected right away.

How did Otis get his name? Any aliases?

He’s named after my favorite singer, Otis Redding, although the name also fits because he’s so soulful!

Does Otis do more to help or hinder your art?

Generally he’s a big help - he wakes me up each morning so I don’t sleep all day, and also gives me nice built-in breaks as he loves to go for multiple walks each day. The only time he’s a hindrance is when I’m struggling with an image and trying to concentrate, and he keeps rolling his ball towards me in an effort to get me to play with him. But as someone who works from home, it’s amazing to have a friendly little dog to keep me company, and to also force me to get outside and walk around each day.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Otis is surprisingly okay with the mailman, but like all dogs, he hates squirrels. When the weather is nice we sit on the front porch while I work on my laptop, and once I had to stop him from diving off the porch into the bushes because a squirrel was taunting him.

Tennis ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Tennis or rubber ball all the way.

He doesn’t like sticks at all, but will literally chase a ball until he drops from exhaustion.

Does Otis have a favorite place to go for outings?

Pittsburgh has a lot of great public parks, and Otis’s favorite is the trails in Frick Park. Now that the leaves are changing, it’s gorgeous and he could spend hours down in the ravine.

Who is Otis's best pet-pal?

Otis doesn’t love other dogs, but he has a changing cast of favorite stuffed toys that he snuggles with. Right now his favorite is probably his little mallard/duck toy.

What is Otis's best quality?

His endless joy for life. As someone who get bogged down by details and anxiety sometimes, it’s so wonderful for me to have Otis who is thrilled to get up and play every single morning. He motivates and inspires me each day.

If Otis could change one thing about Pittsburghers, what would it be?

Nothing! He loves everybody!

If Otis could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Why is he so afraid of bags? Paper, plastic, he is terrified of them! Why???

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Otis could speak, who should voice him?

This is an ongoing debate between my friends; I think he has a gruff, deep voice sort of like Orson Welles, whereas other people think he’s more light & happy, like a child actor. But I say since he’s my dog, I get to pick the voice! Orson Welles it is!
