Failed picture attempts
Ha! Sometimes real life is even better than perfect pictures.
Here's another 'real' picture while I'm at it...
And these are my boys at the ward Christmas breakfast performing in the primary number. Grant is... yes, running away, and Spencer has his finger up his nose. Priceless.
Why stop there? This is one of my personal favorites. Um...how do you REALLY feel about that new baby brother of yours, Grant? (Of course I kept taking pictures until he actually looked semi-happy about his new brother). I think the 'other, non-publishable' photos tell a funnier story than the perfect picture actually does. And yet I keep going for that perfect shot every time... !?
I've never tagged anyone before on a blog, but I'd love to see people's funniest 'reject' photos. Come on, people. Disclose your best reject moments! Break free from perfect photos! Let's see what you've got. (Note- this is especially healing during the holiday season when everyone is trying to get that one perfect shot for their Christmas cards!)

GRANT:
Before bed, I was telling the kids about how Christmas trees used to be decorated with popcorn strings and real candles, etc. Spence asked why we don't use real candles, and I said, "Well, what would happen if the candles fell over?" Spence made a fiery explosion noise. "Grant? Grant?" Grant is off in la la land in his bed. "Grant, do you know what would happen if the candles on the tree fell over?" Blank stare...then, "Um, dinosaurs would come?"
SPENCER:
On the way home from a fabulous gingerbread-making FHE with my cousin Janet and her 3 boys, Spencer randomly asked me if we could get a pool heater like our neighbors so we could go swimming when we get home. I told him that they were probably pretty expensive ( I have no idea how much those things are, but either way, swimming in Dec is not on my to-do list). Spencer, the ultimate problem-solver said, "Can't we just have one emailed to us? You know, get on the computer and have them email it to us? Then we wouldn't have to pay for it." ?!
GRANT:
This is what Grant has woken up saying the past two mornings (still half asleep, but very adamently):
"Mom! Mom! I didn't get any chocolate cake!"
and...
"Mom, I was supposed to get a pink candy! You didn't let me have a pink candy!"
This puts a whole new meaning to the words, "visions of sugar plums danced in their heads!'
SPENCER:
I'm holding Dallin and we're playing outside with the kids on the block and I ask Spencer to check on Grant, who has disappeared inside the house in search of a snack. Half way to the house, Spencer turns around and says in his best exasperated voice, "It's not like you're pregnant anymore, Mom."
(Note- It tooke me a full 5 min to recover from this one. I had to bite my toungue and wait to talk to him about this one until after I had had a time out, or I was likely to say something stupidly cliche like, "Boy, I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it!" Luckily our chat went well AFTER I had let the emotional shock wear off. Spencer apologized after I explained WHY you shouldl NEVER say that to ANY woman!) :)
GRANT:
"Mom, I just love you so much I want to punch you in the face!"
GRANT:
"Mom, my bottom itches. I think I ate too much candy."

Spencer's 6th B-Day Party
Cal the Jedi Trainer
Jedi Training Completion picture
(Grant is in the back w/Cal. Grant was developing a fever (which we discovered when we got home, poor guy) and wasn't too happy. I should have known if he didn't want to play and run around like the other kids that he was getting sick....a sure sign that illness is on it's way.
Our friend Luke even got creative withe the garbage bag and used it as a cape.
Eating cupcakes and...veggies. His birthday is right after Halloween, so I always try to serve something healthy at his parties. (I know, I'm a mean mom). The kids didn't really touch it, but the adults devoured it!

Crossing gardens..
Mom: What green guy?
Grant: That green guy (pointing to the man at the school crosswalk in a bright green vest). See? The crossing garden. I like that crossing garden.

My little fatso
It reminds me of a something my husband told me shortly after we got married. We were sitting in church when suddenly Calvin leaned over and said excitedly, "Honey, our kids are going to be big because of you!" Since we were in public, I refrained from slapping him. What he so innocently MEANT to say was that if our kids have any chance of being taller than him, it will be through my genes, as I have towering brothers over 6 feet tall. Well, honey...I'm gonna take all the credit. :)
This picture is from a month ago, but you get the idea of his chunkiness.

Birthday cake
As I was washing dishes after dinner, Spence said to me ever so nicely:
"Mom, I don't really want to hurt your feelings, but that cake wasn't very good."
I WANTED to remind him that he had picked it out himself, but I just laughed instead and agreed wholeheartedly. Oh the brutal honesty of kids. :)

How To Do Nothing...
The plan was to paint the bedrooms first so we could put those back together fairly quickly and move on. There were some minor setbacks when they found more wall damaged by water than expected. So....we're still in limbo and have about another week left of painting. This means we all have to leave the house at 7am and come home at 5pm...to shuffle more stuff around and try and keep the kids in order. It is quite tricky, really.
So what do you do all day when you can't go home? Well, we drop Cal off at work at 7am, then hang out at McDonald's (or Mickey Donalds as Grant calls it) and play in the play area until Spencer's school starts at 9am. Then either Grant goes to preschool or we go to our ward play group at a park, or maybe a museum. Last week Grant and I drove half way down Las Vegas Blvd. It was interesting and stimulating, but after the 15th wedding chapel, we decided to head to the park. Today we went to playgroup and spent 2 1/2 hours basking in the beautiful weather. Ahhh, Vegas sure does redeem itself this time of year.
After playgroup, we ran a few errands, stopped and got a slurpee, chased birds at the park, rolled down hills, checked out the newest toys at Toys R Us, until it was finally time to pick up Spencer. By then Grant was pooped, and Dallin had literally pooped all over himself. Luckily, I had several changes of clothes handy. We kind of live out of our car during the day. Dallin is such a trooper. It's been kind of fun not having anything to do. Actually, it's more like not being ABLE to do anything. So instead of rushing my kids from the park, we stay longer . As long as they want, really. And why not hang out for 2 hours at Toys R Us? And when Grant had fallen asleep in the car from exhaustion (and Dallin was napping peacefully in his carseat), Spencer and I sat in the car, pulled out a stash of oreos, and brainstormed theme ideas for his upcoming birthday party. I found out that he plays chase with the girls at recess and that he doesn't run as fast as he can so they don't feel bad and can 'catch him.' Sometimes they scratch him. But he doesn't mind. ?! He doesn't like the fig newtons I put in his lunch. And he really wants to invite Courtney (our neighbor that sits for us) to his birthday party and do I think she is home so he can play with her? What a delightful hour that was. I wasn't even annoyed that I couldn't read my book. The book that after 4 days of 'nothingness' I have only been able to read 10 pages of!!!! How ironic is that.
When Grant woke up we went to the Library and exchanged our movies. We got Veggie Tales and The Magic School Bus. I'm trying to be better about what they watch. (They'd watch X-Men or Lord of the Rings if I'd let them! Uhg!) When we got home, our neighbor Christopher, who is in kindergarten too, was knocking on our door....waiting to play kick the can in the court with Spencer. The painters were gone by then, but what the heck? Dinner was going to be chicken nuggets and applesauce anyway. So they played in the court until dark.
I am grateful for a few things. One, that we have a house to live in (and that Grandma and Grandpa have been so generous to us). Come 1pm, I'm out of ideas and just want to sit on a couch. Or lie on a bed and read a book while Grant (maybe) naps. Or eat something out of the pantry. Or get on the computer at random. This feels like a primary lesson, but I am really grateful for my house. :) Being homeless with kids, even with a car, would be the most stressful thing on earth.
Two, what am I stressing about doing every day that keeps me from doing 'nothing' with my kids? Last Thurs when we had to be out all day I took Grant to the Children's Museum where we explored the first floor for 2 hours! I was sitting next to the nicest grandma who had brought her grandsons. We chatted about motherhood, and she said she wished she had left her house messier to spend more time on the floor with her kids. And cooked more simply so she could spend more time playing games with them. It was very interesting. She also noted that she would have scheduled time to herself to rejuvenate so she COULD feel good about doing nothing with them.
I also recently read that kids these days are so entertained and quickly gratified that they are never bored. Bordem, according to this author, allows one to discover who they are. By constantly stimulating our kids, even with 'educational' things and such, we do them a disfavor by robbing them of the down time they need to develop as an individual. Very interesting, I thought.
So...tomorrow we'll start all over again...doing nothing. :) You'd be amazed how exhausting doing nothing can actually be. I think we'll crash at Uncle John's (Cal's brother) apt at nap time to regroup and rest. And simply not have to use a public restroom. Other than that, we'll be going to preschool, exploring even more new parks, browsing through Target, stopping for ice cream, and doing, well, absolutely nothing...at least nothing I can cross off my 'To Do'' list. :)

Fun weekend with Aunt Becca and Uncle Jay
Dallin meets Aunt Becca and Uncle Jay
While Spence was at school, Jay dared Grant to jump in the very cold swimming pool and swim across...for the fair price of a handful of m&ms. This is him contemplating...
Much to our surprise, he DID swim across! I wish I had a picture of his face on the way back. He looked painfully cold!
This is Grant eating his beloved reward. Would you believe that he did it AGAIN? M&Ms ARE quite delicious. Mean Uncle Jay. :)
Grant enjoying Jay practicing his trombone.
We spent a fun afternoon at the park near our house. I'm not sure who had more fun...the kids or Becca and Jay. Saturday was Spencer's soccer game.
Sunday morning kisses. Who can rush getting ready for church when you're having moments like this? Yes, we were late.
Our fun-filled weekend was topped off with a Gladys Knight concert. Cal's parents are in the SUV choir directed by Gladys herself. It was VERY refreshing! Their Christmas CD is one of my favorites! It's got a lot of soul. The concert was really fun. Check out her website at http://www.suvchoir.org/index.html
Gladys is pointing right at Cal's dad.
Cal's stepmom is to the left of the red haired lady in the second row.
What a great weekend.

New Dallin Photos
Grant calls Dallin, "Dawan, Bo-Bawin." He is getting very good at holding him, and I am grateful he no longer tries to pick him up by himself (and carry him across the tile floor. Ahhh!).
Look at that chunk! I just love 'naked' baby pictures.
His first part smile caught on camera.
