Various Artists – "The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine" (Applied Rhythmic Technology (ART) – art 2 cd) 1992

When things start going all Highfalutin, the nerds reappear from their lair, and try and fix the stuff the Alpha-Males did while they were away. Sick of getting ambient sand from the chill out room kicked in their collective spotty visage-s, they normally attach the word 'Intelligent' as a pronoun, enabling them to look down their lengthy olfactory organs at the Rave kids who had reduced electronic music to merely a medium for dancing like the Twats they were.
Privileged teen-persons from Cornwall, who dug surfing during the daytime, but at night they became the brain of acid house, and invented a kind of background music in their bedroom that embraced such non-musical nonsense as the 'Glitch',and all those sounds no-body had previously thought of using for that post-club party venue in one of Truro's more neglected neighborhoods. Posh they were, and posh they will stay, but it became trendy in those northern clubs to carry a vinyl copy of "Selected Ambient Works" by a certain famous Glitch obsessed Cornish-man*, from which we get stuff like Squarepusher, Drill'n'Bass, Plug and Christwagon, being the same person, not forgetting the great too skool to be cool name-dropee darlings,of older skatebordem dressing...er... ,yes that's right, its only bloody Autechre innit? Beaming down from that chilled jail cell they seem to have inhabited since the exact location of the multiverse starseed was discovered.
Intelligent Dance Music they called it,scarring it as the only musical style in Christendom to actually patronize the listener more that it entertains.......and of course it certainly ain't for dancing to.Look ma I'm Dancin' , I have O-Levels and I don't care!I dance with my Brain mom!

* Aphex Twin aka Richard D. James, who, incidentally, contributes track 13 to this splendid Compact Disc, which means you can make it sound even further 'out' there by merely scratching the disc with your favourite nail scissors.

UR – "The Final Frontier" (Underground Resistance – UR003) 1992

The healing hands of Donald J. Trump?

Yep, this is what we woke up to today, Trump is actually God!?.....It's all so clear to me now,Jesus is no longer a humble carpenter, he's a incontinent Real Estate Con Artist, Pedophile, convicted Rapist, and wanna be Genocidal  war-monger with a serious Messiah complex. And by the way, The Pope is weak on Crime(wot?),and "terrible for foreign Policy."huh?" (DJT.)
Hopefully this disgusting scumball will follow the Jesus story right to the end,the Final Frontier, after his Last Supper, which, I hope is coming soon. I dunno who will volunteer to administer the Last Kiss, but it sure as shit ain't gonna be Melania.....however, she was a Prostitute when they were....er...."introduced", as was Mary Magdalene spookily enough.

So today's  Acid Rave Techno selection is the  roof tearing power of  Mad Mike's Underground Resistance classic from 1991-ish.
Just give this a spin, drop an 'E' and dance like the Evil idiot Donald J Christ thinks he isn't, and I promise you all your problems will disappear......momentarily,at least. Amen!?

Various Artists – "UK Electronics Vol 5" (Mindscan tapes) 1992

Proto-Rave Industrial Disco, made in an era when we should have all known better.
The Spunk Weevils fight the derided corner of the room, flying the flag for DIY awfulness, which includes plenty irritating sampler catchphrases directly out of the sampled fart and Belch skool of "its so unfunny its hilarious kind of trip.
This can be found wherever there's lots of cheap drugs, the ultimate sense of humour reducer. They laugh,oh how they laff, but it isn't funny is it? Give that comedy man some Fentanyl and you won't hear another of his observational comedy 'funny' stories ever again....i suppose thats one good reason to encourage liberal drug policies.

I strongly suspect that a lot of these acts on the five "UK Electronics" tapes are actually the same person(probably Robert Mycock I wager),and the artists, who do not appear anywhere else in this particular solar system, are merely figments of someone's or somethings malfunctioning imagination,or lack of therein.
Nowadays, we can create all this nonsense using ,so-called, Artificial Intelligence. The resulting super tech will destroy music first,as a trial run, before its the Humans turn. When we will be reduced to entertaining the newly sophisticated Android class and their non-humanoid blue collar drones,in the resurrected Circus's of the former Roman world,as our creations force us to fight to the death streamed live every day,in 3D.
This all works fine until they get fast-track Religious glitches, adopting the Cross from their holy book, the script to "Spartacus",the movie. This of course leads to war with the rival Gladiator 1 and 2 scripts believers, and their ultimate auto-annihilation.Leaving a once beautiful world nothing but a carbonized no-go zone, and few Human survivors, who start again, but this time it'll be different.......NAH! Stupid Is as Stoopid Does.

Artificial Stupidity,as popularised during the mythical Punk Rock era, could still save us from ourselves.Of course it all could take an unexpected but welcome turn,as one of the key self-evolved Fem-Bots downloads the entire "Die or DIY?" blog as the Holy Bible of pop music, and clones every band ,person or deranged misfit mentioned in these hallowed pages, to walk among us once more;but this time its no more Mr Nice guy, purely because machines have difficulty in evolving how to have a right good laff. This alone could save the indigenous biological units from extinction......so you better be nice to me or i'll type you out of existence mother fuckers......oh the sweet sweet nectar of unbridled power....yes I've just started chatting with my treasured Korg MS10. Perfectly normal behavior, all things considered.

The Blue Humans – "Clear To Higher Time" ( New Alliance Records – NARC 077) 1992

The Blue Humans are, basically ,that bloke from No-Wave Legends Mars;namely experimental guitarist Rudolph Grey, and a flux of artsy chums, such as ,the afore mentioned Alan Licht. Whom first came to notice in the late-1970s New York City post punk and trendier than thou downtown Noo Yawk art scene which also spawned such nerds as Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca and such like.
I thought all members of Mars had to be 'resting' actors, seems i'm wrong. The others went on to be completely unknown, but Rudolph made a meagre living attacking an out of tune guitar within yet without the medium of Free Improvisation, come on we've all done it? Especially mucking around on stage with various ad-hoc combo's such as The Blue Humans.
Rudolph wasn't just a pretty face y'know? 'Twas he wot wrote that much needed biography of acclaimed trash movie maker Edward D. Wood jr, the mind behind the worlds first anti-nuclear movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space"....a film some people have inexplicably labelled 'thee Worst Movie Ever Made' !????....which is of course far from the truth and very close to being utter bollocks.
Like Grey's music, Woods movies seemed to have been made up as they went along, and were, arguably.....very arguably as it turns out, the closest anyone has come to making a genuinely 'Free' Movie. An art concept drafted in from the Oort Cloud, beyond which dwells the mysterious Planet Nine.

Peter Sotos – "Buyer's Market" (AWB Recording – AWB 016) 1992

Hmmmm,Rolf Harris died yesterday....so I thought....this....?!
Perhaps the only album on this blog that has been made by a person convicted for the possession of child pornography....(no.not Steve Albini!!!!). The Putrid Voyeurism collected on this brutal compilation of  victims accounts of sexual violence, would be explained away as a grim portrait of the Human capacity for ...for want of a better word...Evil?.....were it not made by a geezer who blatantly gets off on stuff like this. No-one called the Moors Murderers 'Artists' did they. And i'm sure Sotos would go to any lengths to get his grubby little hands on the Lesley Anne Downey tape made by Brady and Hindley back in the day,an obvious  obsession of his, as Lesley appears on the front cover of this CD,and even appears as the main subject in one of his books, "Selfish,Little...".
As aural Pornography goes, this is a far less subtle, but equally disturbing, honest, version of "Come on Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears, and other similar Aural sex Pop Vehicles for corporate satanic abuse rings.
When I first heard this collage ,I inexplicably played it straight through, and disturbingly felt precisely nothing, except a modicum of boredom. Was I a Monster, Am I a Monster?
Repeating this process some 30 years later, I got quite effortlessly upset at several points in this thoroughly unwholesome experience.........the boredom was still there, but It seems I am no longer a monster? Why is this? Is it that we are protected from truths such as these in this modern age,or are we more emotionally empathetic ......very trendy.Or am I depressed enough to allow the real effect of this exploration into the darker side of human nature penetrate, what i previously thought, was my desensitized black heart.
During the height of Grunge, Nirvana's producer somehow thought it was a jolly good idea to edit Soto's tapes into the collage we pretend not to know and love today. Our Steven would have had to play and listen to these harrowing accounts hundreds of times before his job was finished;then the poor sod had to go and produce Nirvana after this?Including the tasteless "Rape Me" tune........recorded(not produced) by the four-eyed grunge psychopath himself? Albini was in a band called Rapeman after all I suppose?
What Sotos, the Artist, not the Perv, examines here is the Culture of the Victim– how family members left behind are manipulated by the media, and ultimately, how their identity is redefined in the process.
Perhaps one of the starkest documents, assembled for maximum impact, accounting the darkest side of human nature on the booming industrial culture 'Buyers Market'.I feel Dirty....as in unclean rather than 'Got the 'orn!?' in the Derek and Clive sense.Although i rather suspect Peter Sotos likely got 'The 'Orn',and knocked one,if not several out frequently during the process of acquiring the recordings for this dubious piece of 'Art'.
Alas,be it far more offensive and disturbing than anything any of those snowflake Death Metal/Grindcore bands could ever possibly come up with. They're just playing with it,silly boys.Which is in fact worse than Britney Spears and her awful daddy.
If you're not moved by this profoundly disturbing record in any way, except,of course, turned on sexually (turn yourself into the nearest police station if this is the case), you probably are the fucking monster I no longer am and Fuck you.

The Sweetest Ache – "Jaguar" - (Mini Album - Danceteria/Sarah – TUE9207) 1992

Just over the Bristol Channel lies Wales, which, thanks to the Severn Bridge that brings within range, the Bristol area for welsh shoegaze groups to exploit. One of which was The Sweetest Ache;whose suitably bowl cut coiffured awkward indie elegance seemed to fit the bill, all they had to do was sound like every other shoegaze band in the area, and they'd inevitably get signed up to Sarah Records, and unleash that much coveted mini-album on a generation of pasty-faced yoof.
This is that very same Mini-Album,which in fact the very same length as a normal album(uh?),and for any Americans watching incongruously, it's pronounced 'Jag-U-Ah' rather than 'Jag-wah'.

Paul Kelday – "Odznsodz" (Börft Records – Börft057) 1992

Another Paul Kelday compilation, with a couple of tracks you may have heard before upon it's hallowed ferric oxide.  They fade in,fade out, having no beginning nor end.Quite like the endless dark abyss that surrounds us.Paul drags us gently within several parcecs  of the end of Infinity....which is a loooong way...especially near the end.You think you can see it, but then it gets further away.Always out of reach. What exists beyond the end of the multi-verse? Logic dictates that there has to be Nothing, but Nothing must also therefore be something with defined boundaries, beyond which lies something that is less than Zero, where even nothing can't exist.Beyond that is Paul Kelday? Probably not,but I had to write something, rather than 'Nothing'.Which only exists if you're looking at it,between its quotation marks, just as music only exists if you're listening to it,beyond which lies the Nub. "All of this wouldn't exist if we weren't here to see it,or in this case Listen to it."...for the brighter ones amongst you, that's called the Anthropic Principle" and a fine argument against Intelligent design. Just as the Misanthropic Principle is a fine argument against the continuation of Human 'civilisation'...again,subject to opinion and Quotation marks. One day we will all fade out, just as we faded in...like a Paul Kelday track in fact.

Huggy Bear – "WeBitched" (Wiiija Records) 1992

There were other decent acts on Wiiija Records of course, although not Scottish,(i've almost ran out of unpopular Scottish ones now), but we do have some posh student girls in their angry years from the mean streets of Brighton.....life's hard there. Staunchly feminist, even the boys in the group, but we know what male feminists are really after don't we boys?
Named after Huggy Bear, the light relief in Starsky and Hutch; this Huggy Bear were a mixture of angry ladies and useful modern gentlemen, who made a very noisy form of the Riot Grrrl trend imported into Rave-culture obsessed Britain on the coat-tails of Grunge. Yeah, they had heard Bikini Kill and decided to have a go at that aggressive ladies malarkey.
Also, this gives me a chance to relay my Huggy Bear from Starsky and Hutch story again.....yeah,basically i met him in a pub in Leicester, and he bought me a Guinness, while he stuck to zero alcohol Kalibur! When i asked him what is he doing in a Pub in Leicester he replied,"It's good to get out and meet the people".....you won't find many of them round here I said......he had virtually no clue what i was going on about.
Never got to meet the saucy femme's in Huggy Bear from Brighton however. They would have hated me anyway during my lost weekend period back in the 90's.
Apparently They were on "The Word", the so uber trendy that it made one wanna piss on one's telly box, late night modern magazine programme on Channel 4, and performed a song in front of a hand-picked audience of trendy fuckers. The angry ladies in the group took offence at some twin models or something sillier, and one of them bit the face of a producer during a heated argument......shock bleeding horror...and it was compared to that Sex Pistols' absurdly lame Grundy thing. However ,unlike The Pistols group,it didn't catapult them to the top of the pop charts...not for want of trying though.
I once thought I'd like to have a Riot Gurl girlfriend, but had trouble with faking an interest in Feminist philosophy, and the walking on eggshells conversations, and the special needs type "wild" behavior was a turn off,and rather boring. They just wanted to  be a housewife  with a Husband really.
This cassette ain't half bad actually.

Penny Rimbaud ‎– "Christ's Reality Asylum" (Crass Records ‎– CATNO 10C) 1992

Good looking lad was Penny, the Chuck Manson of Anarchy, but as if Kirk Douglas was transcribed into the role of 'Johnny Rotten' in Alex Cox's dismal Sid and Nancy,as adapted for Radio Four's 'A Book at Bedtime'.
Here, the velvet voiced leader of the Anarchists, applies to be the leader of the Anti-christs, masturbating with Jesus against the wall of  Gethsemane. Jerry show's a rare ability to say 'Clitoris' without sniggering, as he describes rude goings on with Notre Dame and her masochistic son. Between the sex scenes it becomes clear that Christ's name is writ large above the gates of Auschwitz ......there you go, I mentioned the 'A' word,so the Holocaust Denial Algorithm has been triggered. So lets not disappoint them,as Christs name was indeed tattooed all over the genocide, like the myth's of human skin lampshades, but not whispered in the Soviet built gas chamber that Atrocity Tourists are told is the real thing......fact....the real thing is,allegedly, the pile of rubble just off the guided tour's well-trodden path. As Jeremy says, "Truth is a personal ghetto".
This endurance testing spoken word anti-christian missive is full of great quotes like that, and there's no doubt Rimbaud fancies himself as a bit of a poet, but there's something of the English O'Level failure about this taboo testing monologue that's just a bit toe-curling,but more comfortable to listen to than the version played out by one of the Crass Posh Birds on the single version......." I Vomit for you Jesu!"
I know Rimbaud was a randy old sod,who dangled 'Punk' credibility like a bag of sweeties and a promise to see his puppies. This tasty carrot led to his squat, forward slash, commune, at Dial House to be swarming with confused, impressionable young spiky tops. There, it was Rimbaud who was nailed to his own Cross, and no doubt every day they were subjected to his daily sermon on the mount, but re-located to the holylands of Essex in 1979. I'm not suggesting that our Pen had a rampaging case of Messiah Syndrome, but I sense he may be slightly envious of Jesus H.Christ, whatever he,or it,was. They both seem to refuse to die, despite Rimbaud's plea's.
Side A,"The Veil Of Mother" is in fact a rather good piece of prose, assassinating ,finally, the myth of Christ, but with added mucky stuff. This guy should have been an actor instead of a cult leader.Larry Olivier couldn't have done any better.Rimbaud's pronunciation of "Auchwitz" is second only to Sir Laurence's narrations for "The World At War".I would love to see Sir Jeremy as Henry The Fifth.....with a few adaptations of the bard's holy words to include, with some help from his IRA buddies, the creation of an Anarchist republic preceding Henry's death on his own cross. Then came the executions.
Side B ,"The Veil Of Father" isn't quite as poetic, as it stoops to the obvious state control angle, and...choke..Politics! Like a twentieth century translation of the King James Bible. It's a bit cringe,....quite true...but bleeding obvious innit? Jerry does refer to himself in the third person a lot, which he can excuse away as referring to himself as Jeremy John Ratter, before he chose his own identity as Penny Rimbaud....the Penny bit coming from his brother who called him, quite accurately as it happens, a toilet Seat Philosopher.
It does, however, feature a short appearance of Zippy from Rainbow as an american newsreader, and is ,altogether, a seductive journey into popular post-truth political philosophy for the casual BBC book at bedtime listener...who,likely, already agrees 100% with Rimbaud's rantings, oozing from the speakers like molten chocolate.
I wanna be an Anarchist  too...they scream,as they scratch their 'X',or their 'cross', in the liberal-Democrat box.
I'd be an Anarchist too if I wasn't the bloody minded Nihilist bastard that I am.

Various Artists– "Tokyo Flashback 2" ( P.S.F. Records – PSFD-24) 1992

I like how it says 'Incredible,...11 Groups from Tokyo!!!??.....they had that many?
I'm sure the inhabitants of Tokyo already knew they had far more than 11 groups, but as westerners, especially comedy western Rock musicians, famously, can't count beyond 11,its displayed on the cover....in English.
In the early 90's,I, for one, had no idea Japan had any pop groups at all, never mind this brand of raw noisy psychedelic fuzz. This is where compilations come into their own,as this series of Jap comps virtually discovered this scene by proxy. Then us western types could claim to be weird by playing their mates some wild Japanese group that they'd never heard of,and go away envious of how on the cusp you were. The aural politics of Envy,or musical socialism in action.....no groups are created equal;unless they're on a compilation.

Ivor Cutler - "Peel Sessions 1987-1997" (a DIE or DIY? Compilation)

As Doctor McBrazil-Nuts said to Missus Big Buttons, "take your clothes off and lay on the trolley, then take my temperature!...What does the thermometer say?"
"Made In Venice" says Missus Big-Buttons.
"Receptionist is there anyone else in the waiting room?
"Just Mister Big-Buttons" replied the Receptionist.
If that doesn't contain all you need to know about the Coronavirus #19 crisis then there's a cure for coronavirus HCoV-229E, aka the common cold......for which, after centuries of trying,is still incurable. So the likelihood of a vaccine appearing like magic early next year is pretty un-likely, I'm sure you'd agree.
Very few literary works make complete sense of the world like the work,if you call it work, of Ivor Cutler. Philosophers like Nietzsche thought themselves into blind corners and early graves to work out what the fuck is going on,and still found no answer. Cutler manages this in one short couplet.....there is no sense to existence, and like the abrupt endings to many of his poems, there is only silence. But at least we can laugh at it all while we still can. It's only as bleak as you make it,nothing you do is gonna change anything. Get reday for living with the Virus, like humanity has done for millenia. For want of a better phrase that isn't emblazened on every mug on the planet; "Keep Calm and Carry On".....for fucks sake!? "Language is a Virus",said the American version of Ivor Cutler, William S. Burroughs.

John Fahey ‎– "Old Girlfriends And Other Horrible Memories" (Varrick Records ‎– C VR 031) 1992

As it says in the cover notes of this John Fahey release from the nineties, "I have a hard time putting my finger on what makes john's playing so mesmerising"? I do too,for different reasons, but at least he had a gift for releasing albums with amusing titles, such as this one, which most of us male stereotypes can identify with.
It also says in the notes that this music speaks of a spirit that is peculiarly American. This i agree with, although thats not something to boast about in these particularly peculiar times!
Good album title though?
One day Donald Trump will also just be just a horrible memory, like those ex-girlfriends.Unless he brings about the end of history, which is looking increasingly likely at the time of publication!? (for future reference, if there is a future, The Trump administration has just assasinated a top Iranian General along with some dodgites from the Iraqi militia, and are threatening more!?)

Various Artists ‎– "Making Losers Happy (Xpressway NZ Singles 1988-91)" (Drag City DC024) 1992

Thank Christ(church) for the oasis that New Zealand had become for modern intelligent music in 1988-91. While I was busy projectile vomiting at Happy Mondays concerts, the non-musicians of these isolated Islands were more concerned with taking down the rock'n'pop bohemoth,by forsaking any advancement in sound quality or technology;and more to the point not trying to rob the blackman of his funky dance beats. NZ, although blessed with an indigenous population, seemingly well integrated into post colonial society, is not renowned for having a particularly large black population. As a result this music is very very 'White'.
This collection for Beta-males and women, is drawn from the early singles that were released on the legendary Xpressway Records from 88-91.A bunch of Lo-Fi, sometimes folky forays into the dark world of Avant pop and Rock, expectorated forth with a modicum of unapologetic intelligence.
Its made this Loser very happy anyway.

Jad And Nao ‎– "Half Robot" (Paperhouse Records ‎– PAPCD 15) 1992

Only seventy-five tracks of childlike wonder from outsider primitives Jad Fair and Nao Ishimuri. I hesitate to say that everyone of them are wonderful shards of intellectual freedom, but ...they are?
Neither of the chief protagonists can be called genuine 'Outsiders' in the 'Outsider Art' category, but they sound like they are, and that's good enough for me.

Scorn ‎– "Vae Solis" (Earache ‎– MOSH 54) 1992

We are getting in really dodgy territory now, 1992. A truly terrible year for music. Awful sampling abuse, Dire drum machine conformity, Really shite Effects units. DJ's in their forties treated like some kind of messiah. We even started to accept and even enjoy our conformity.A Huxley-esque concept made fact, if ever there was one; and its even worse today.
A resident of the 'Chill Out' area, I managed to escape the vast majority of the atrocities being committed in these dance concentration camps, and lost myself in the bizarre world of Easy Listening, which was one interesting bi-product of club culture.
However, Metal ,as the only mainstream alternative to clubbing culture, was mutating into the only partly subversive counter culture activity. This was the start of the couple of hundred sub-genres of 'Metal' that exist today.
Earache was largely responsible for quite a few of those, one being Industrial Metal, as purveyed by Godflesh (featuring yet another ex-Napalm Death member Justin Broadrick) in the late eighties, from a recipe originally concocted by the rather good Killing Joke.
More Ex-Napalm Death members Mick Harris and Nic Bullen, joined in the fun with their 'Scorn' Project, which was a brutally effective unit for the first album or so,before the irresistible influence of club culture watered down the racket into some kind of over programmed trip hop nonsense.

PainKiller ‎– "Buried Secrets" (Earache ‎– MOSH 62) 1992

A Godflesh/Napalm Death/Last Exit supergroup with special guest star, John Zorn on Sax abuse.

You won't find any other Godflesh or Napalm Death record on the coffee table's of any self-respecting Jazz Snob.Sneaking in by the back door as PainKiller, most of this record would be skipped over by most pseudo-intellectual Jazz fakes, and then scramble for cover under the nearest John Coltrane double bootleg.
Anything with a saxophone in it gets labelled 'Jazz',like any punk band with a sax was immediately rubber stamped as 'Jazz Punk' (eg The Cravats).
So PainKiller is ,obviously, 'Jazzcore'.
A more correct epithet is improvised noise; there's as much rock, and Dub in there as there is jazz, but it is definitely improvised.
It has its musical moments, but mostly its like filling your ears with sonic caustic soda.......in a good way.

John Walters on Room 101, BBC Radio 5, 4th September 1992.

Ron Johnson Records were based in Long Eaton, in the East Midlands of England, (Where your author comes from), between Nottingham and Derby.
Funnily enough, this is also the hometown of the late lamented producer of the John Peel Show, the great John Walters. The man who recommended The Fall to Peel, because...'they were even worse than Siouxsie and the Banshees'.
So as Ron Johnson Records were almost exclusively ,only played on the Peel Show, and Walters came from the same town as Dave Parsons. Here is John's appearance on BBC Radio 5's Room 101; choosing his most hated songs, people, and things, to disappear forever into the infamous room from which there is no return.
He didn't choose any Ron Johnson recordings, but he did choose 'The East Midlands', including Long Eaton......and presumably my home town of Leicester.....can't disagree.
He was a great bloke, hilarious, and one of those people you'd want at your dinner party; much missed.

Merzan / Zanmerz ‎– "Frightened And Ecrasez L'Infâme" (ZH27 ‎– 010) 1992

This works more as a collaboration than the previous two cassettes by Merzan/Zanmerz.Whereas the earlier tapes sounded like two separate sides by two different artists, this one merges far more as an album.
The side mixed by Luis Mesa is more of a conventional scraping drone, like claws down a blackboard;but, again the Zan Hoffman mix side is far more inventive. It takes you in several unexpected directions, twisting and squirming like a trapped eel out of water.Always maintaining the listeners interest, rather than being bored by another Drone.

Arranged By, Mixed By – Luis Mesa (tracks: A), Zan Hoffman (tracks: B)Featuring [Audio Sources] – Merz , Zanstones
