I found 2 old demos on an external hard drive. As my days of relevancy as a DJ slow to a halt, I wanted to share them to give some perspective.
Go back and look at my output circa 2004. GO AND LOOK. I had started buying a few dancier records in 2003 and 2004, and 2004 saw releases of mixtapes for both Venus Envy and The Decypher Cru. I was hot shit, on a roll. I was playing dancey vinyl, feeling good, and decided I should go get a regular booking at a club. What could go wrong?


After passing around a tonne of these demos, no one called me back. Maybe they didn't like the music, maybe they didn't want a fat queer woman on display, whatevs. In retrospect a lot of my dance favourites did not exactly inspire the same rush of feelings in the rest of the world. YMMV


Honed by many years of eclectic queer parties, I repeated a similar thing in 2012, with much greater refinement: Q-Bounce 1.1 and Q-Bounce 1.2 were my statements of how I wanted to have a dance party.  They were demos of exactly what I wanted to bring to the table.


The reactions from my hometown Ottawa crowds were mostly stares, gawks, and confusion, thus effectively ending my viability as a dance DJ. (though apparently it went over well in Toronto and Montreal.)

These are a bit sloppy, but for me, endearing.  Maybe it's the nostalgia.  I once thought I could get Ottawa clubs to dance along to Squarepusher and Mu. Oh god the needle even jumps at one point.
I made them each under 20 minutes so they could fit on one of those nifty 3" CDRs, or on either side of a 40 minute cassette.

This is the set I played at the Original Plumbing party on July 1st, 2010 @ The Beaver in Toronto.  It also includes parts of the set I played at Toronto Pride on July 2nd.  (Thanks to Morgan for convincing me to putting it online.)
It is dedicated to the memory of Will Munro, whom I did not know as more than an aquaintance, but whom had always inspired me with his fusion of art, activism and celebration.

This is also a big thank-you to everyone that helped me celebrate (in whatever way) getting married!
Hopefully this will carry you all through the many summer BBQs.

While I love it when I am hired to play downtempo, idm, minimal, abstract hiphop, ambient and all that good stuff, those gigs are few and far between.  More often than not, I am hired to rock the party, and this set is a good example of how I currently rock it live.  It is very long, but most of my life sets are extended affairs, 2-4 hours or so, that span numerous genres and tempos.

IMPORTANT:
Since I will be off on a honeymoon for a while, I won't be able to promote this.

CPI - live at Soulselecta, 2009-11-28

Last Saturday I was invited to drop a set for the Ottawa bass party Soulselecta, and I recorded the 90 minute affair.

It's pretty approprite that I had this gig and that I post this now, right here in between the BEST OF 2009 frenzy.  While not being exclusively 2009, far from it actually, this mix can in some ways offer up a BEST OF 2009: BASS kind of angle.

Performers like La Roux and Ellie Goulding were shining stars of the year, with their gems of songs resulting in some of the most amazing remixes.
Beth Ditto of The Gossip shows up, and she's always been reliable for dope source material.
Producers B. Rich, Bassnectar, Nero and Babylon Systems have been super hot.
Also dope, but just not in this mix, are producers like Eskmo, Bounce Camp, DZ, Twocker and Starkey.

This mix here is all about bass-heavy dancing.  Crank this way up, and make sure your subwoofer is tweaked.  We're going from house to deep to dubstep to jungle.

I am going to start posting up some albums that I digitize from various sources. Most of these will be oddball or experimental things, but let's get the ball rolling with a classic:

I first posted this to my MP3 blog (thus the odd filename in the link) but it absolutely warrants the heraldry involved in inaugurating my dump of rare albums.

Is this rare? Well, rare enough! Everyone who owned this assuredly played the shit out of the cassette, and if you were cool enough to have the tape it probably scratched to hell from DJing every hot elementary school party you were at.
Mind you, the "Dance mix" series were a Canadian phenomenon. See that logo in the upper left? That's Much Music. That's the Canadian version of the old MTV that used to play music videos.
So for any non-Canucks out there, this might be a something entirely new. Dizzingly new. Pure ambrosia of new. BUCKETS FULL OF WIN. DO YOU UNDERSTAND???

My rip here is from an old cassette tape loaned to me by a beautiful gay man who kept this treasure for 17 long years. Steven, my gratitude!
