Grab the Defibrillators

By Keith R. Schmitz

This is from one researcher, and of course results may vary as the commercial says, but based on his findings, 93% of time The Wall Street Journal in their editorials miss-represents science. Can ya all handle the shock!

With objective science being so important to business success in this country, you'd think the country's leading newspaper would know better or at least have some respect for the activity. It is doubtful that the leading business papers in India and even China dissemble about this subject as the WSJ, so it is no wonder those places and others not pulled in by tethers like this are surging.

Here in this state we are on the verge of foolishly kicking embryonic stem cell research out the door.

No wait. This is a Murdock operation so when it comes to fact vs political fiction, you know where to lay you money.

Dean Yager's lecture from Ghostbusters sums up Murdock and the right wing world's approach to the discipline:
The purpose of science is to serve mankind. You seem to regard science as some kind of dodge... or hustle. Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable!

You are a poor scientist, Dr. Venkman!

From the Department of Phobias I Probably Shouldn't Reveal Department

by folkbum

I do not irrationally fear very many things. However, it just simply freaks me the freak out that there exists a distinct possibility that a bunch of scientists with their "physics" will create a ginormous black freaking hole that swallows us all.

So far so good, it seems. But still ...

Nailing It on Climate Change Denial

By Keith R. Schmitz

Hey climate deniers, we've got your answer to climate change ignorance right here:
So, climate change deniers, let me get this straight: The same scientific community that has made this country prosperous and strong with innovations like the microcircuitry and telecommunications that power your blogs, the aeronautical advancements that whisk you to tea party rallies and the medical technologies that prolong your life (assuming your insurer covers the procedure) is now scheming to perpetrate an enormous hoax to ruin the American economy?

Such a broad-based, coordinated deception would be unprecedented in science’s history — but is quite common outside of science. A perfect example is the propaganda machine that has convinced you that, in this one case, science is plotting against us while the oil, coal and other polluting industries have the nation’s long-term interests at heart.

Over the years, various industries have launched coordinated propaganda efforts to deny now accepted facts like the cancer-causing effects of tobacco or that seat belts save lives. In fact, scientific findings linking any commercial product to an injurious effect, or imposing costs on business, have almost always met a wall of rejection by the industry affected.

If, this time, industry truly is fighting for our best interests by denying the role of pollution in climate change, and if science truly is defrauding the public on such a grand scale, then each would be a shocking development in the histories of industry and science.

We Have Run out of Excuses

By Keith R. Schmitz

For those in this country who are worried that the Chinese are not going to do anything about climate change and therefore we will become uncompetitive if we do, looks like the Chinese will be in fact going after the problem.

And for those of you in the peanut gallery who though you only believe the likes of sociopaths like Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh and John Bolton; and who will be skeptical, the proof is that the Chinese will be looking to make money off of their push.

That, for a country like ours that gives credence to nonsense such as creationism and intelligent design rather than legitimate science, plus in the virtue of exporting jobs overseas, that is the bad news.

The continuing Republican war on science

by folkbum

It's not all global warming denial (though that is teh funny) and trying to suck the science out of biology classes.

No, this is maybe worse: The presence of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul in a little over a month will shut down the Science Museum of Minnesota for the week. Won't somebody please think of the children?!?

Unrelatedly, as I was up late working, this song ran through my iTunes, and it reminded me of the current debate over how long we should stay in Iraq--the Maliki/ Obama timetable of 16 months or the McCain 5-100 year plan.

Also: I could watch this for hours.

Simple Answers to Simple Questions

by folkbum

James Tiberius Harris asks, "Is there any other country in the whole wide world that has bought into the junk science of global warming like American has?"

Answer: No country buys into junk science like America does.

A Dangerous Precedent?

I am worried now that, since I have posted two days in a row, people will start to expect too much of me.

And is anybody else worried about this?
