Funkie Junkie Focus – Tim Holtz Christmas Cards

Hello there, Christmas is almost here! Crafting is continuing around here at a breakneck speed ha ha. Our focus for this time is 'Tim Holtz Christmas, Anything Goes'. I found myself in need of some extra Christmas cards so I got going…

Time is valuable right now so I utilized a "use what I have ready" method. The 3-D embossed backgrounds were extras from a previous project. Couldn't let those go to waste! They were the perfect backgrounds for layering lots of Tim Holtz Christmas ephemera and die cuts. (I also have a box of extra die cuts so those were all ready to go too.) Efficient creating is a must five days before Christmas. ;-)

I really love the Tree Rings and Pine Branches 3-D Texture Fade embossing folders.

My Tim Holtz ephemera stash is a mix of years past and present so I'm not sure if this deer is in the current 2022 pack. There are plenty of great images in each years' collection though so no worries.

The background is Opaque Distress Crackle Paste applied through the Festive Layering Stencil. When dry, I added Distress Holiday Mica Stains for color and shimmer.

The embossed pine branches are highlighted with the pearlescent Seasonal Distress Crayons.

The Christmas Paper Dolls are so cute to use on cards as well. If time wasn't so short, I would have colored them using the new Distress Watercolor Pencils. Compromises must be made in times of need!

Here are a few peeks at the behind the scenes. Mostly it's a matter of pulling everything out, digging through piles and playing around with elements until I'm happy.

I did prepare all the card bases first:

I cut the leading edges of the cards using the Deckle Torn Edge Trimmer. I think it gives it a nice finished look.

Note the creative mess lol!

Merry Christmas! I hope you are inspired to get some holiday crafting in.

Tim Holtz Christmas Stampers Anonymous - A Festive Collage Card

Hello, Lisa Hoel here and welcome to the current Product Focus! We are taking a look at Tim Holtz's 2022 Stampers Anonymous Christmas stamps. There are some great new sets released this season and I used one of my favorites (Festive Collage) to create a Christmas card.

Lisa Hoel for The Funkie Junkie Boutique - Product Focus on Tim Holtz 2022 Christmas stamps! #creativejuicefreshsqueezed #tim_holtz #thefunkiejunkieboutique

I created lots of layers for this card! Let's take a look:

Step 1 - I used the new Pinecones stencil to create the background layer. I used Heavystock as my substrate and did one piece with Opaque Crackle Paste and one piece with Translucent Crackle Paste. I wanted to compare the two and wasn't sure which I wanted to use in my card.

Step 2 - I spritzed each piece with Antique Linen, Old Paper and Tea Dye Distress Stains as well as Fresh Balsam Mica Stain. The Opaque paste resists the stains more than the Translucent. I decided to go with the Translucent piece for my card.

Step 3 - The next layer was a piece embossed using the 3D Tree Rings Folder. The next was a Heavystock Tag to do my stamping on. I prepped it by smooshing Oxide Iced Spruce and Antique Linen onto the tag.

Step 4 - Stamping! Using a stamping platform, I first stamped my image with Archival Black Soot ink. Then I used some of the Seasonal Pearlescent Distress Crayons like watercolors to color the image in. (Scribble on a craft sheet and use a water brush to pick up the color and paint.) When the crayon was dry, I stamped again over the top with Black Soot to make the details of the stamped image crisp again.

Step 5 - I used the Vintage Labels Die Set to make a little label to stamp the sentiment on (from the Darling Christmas stamp set).

Tim Holtz Christmas Idea-ology Assemblage

Hello, Lisa Hoel here. I'm really getting revved up for my favorite making season, Christmas time! Our Funkie Junkie Focus this time around is on Tim Holtz's Christmas Idea-ology which I am a big fan of. All those fabulous bits and bobs. Love it! I created an assemblage in a Festive Tin

Lisa Hoel for The Funkie Junkie Blog - Christmas Idea-ology assemblage #creativejuicefreshsqueezed #tim_holtz #thefunkiejunkie #thefunkiejunkieboutique #frillyandfunkie

Bottle brush trees, tiny lights, snowman… these definitely fall in the "a few of my favorite things" category.

Lisa Hoel for The Funkie Junkie Blog - Christmas Idea-ology assemblage #creativejuicefreshsqueezed #tim_holtz #thefunkiejunkie #thefunkiejunkieboutique #frillyandfunkie

Let's take a look at some of the building process.

1) I cut some styrofoam blocks and hot glued them into place inside the tin. I made an area at the back of the tin to tuck the lid into.

Hot glued the lid in place.

I didn't take a photo, but I cut a piece of white mat board to cover the foam and create a platform to glue all the elements onto.

2) I prepared all the Idea-olgy parts I wanted to include. The metal numbers I painted with the new Lumberjack Plaid paint. It IS a good red! Can't wait to play more with this new color.

The snowballs are Baubles that I smeared with Snowfall Grit Paste. The Salvaged Snowman I painted with acrylic paints (such great detail!)

The Tree Lot bottle brush tree I colored with Rustic Wilderness Spray Stain as well as Mica Stains Tree Lot and Fresh Balsam. TIP: I covered the wooden tree base with masking tape before I sprayed the tree. It kept it clean so the Distress wouldn't bleed into the snow in the final assemblage.

3) I tried using the new Distress Watercolor Pencils to color the Paper Dolls. They work really well! Paula Cheney has a really great tutorial on how to do it on her blog. FYI, this particular doll is from one of the past years' Christmas collections so I'm not sure if this one is in the 2022 pack.

4) I hot glued in the main elements and then spread Snowfall Grit Paste around them with a small palette knife. While the paste was wet, I also used the
Glitter Duster to add Rock Candy Dry Glitter to the scene for even more sparkle.

Thanks for stopping by and Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are inspired to go get crafty! Christmas Treat Boxes – Ranger Seasonal Distress Playtime!

Hello friends, Lisa Hoel here! If you are into making for the holiday season, it is definitely time to think about Christmas crafting! I know for me personally, if I wait until December there is no way I can have all my creative plans come to fruition. So let's get going!

Our Funkie Junkie product focus this time around is on Tim Holt'z Seasonal Distress release from Ranger. Mica Stains, Crayons, Snowfall Grit Paste and the Grey Woodgrain Cardstock make for some stellar creative playtime!

I decided to use Eileen Hull's new Geometric Box Die to create some Christmas treat gift boxes in two different color ways.

I thought the triangular panels of the box sides would be perfect for showcasing different Distress techniques and colors.

In my personal decorating I don't do much with pink/pastel type color combinations but I do appreciate the retro palette! The Holiday Mica Spray Set #4 that contains Merrymint, Cocktail Party and Shiny Bauble is perfect for it. (More details on techniques below, scroll on…)

Here is the more "woodsy" traditionally colored box. The lid lifts off to reveal whatever treats you decide to pack inside:

Let's take a look at some of the how to! (If you missed Tim Holtz's live where he discusses the 2022 Seasonal Distress release and shares demos, check it out. SO much good info.)

1) I started out playing with the new Pine Branches 3D Embossing Folder, trying different papers and color combinations.

The pearlescent Crayons are perfect for blending over the embossed areas. I just colored directly onto the paper and then blended with my finger.

I ended up going with the green cardstock with Fresh Balsam Crayon.

2) Next I moved on to various pastes and sprays.

Transparent Texture Paste on Distress Watercolor Paper.

Love it!

Texture Paste Opaque (Holiday Knit Stencil) and Crackle Paste Opaque (Festive Stencil)

The Tart Cranberry Mica Stain adds a wonderful glimmer!

3) The Mica Stains are perfect for coloring the Woodland Trees too! Next time I spray trees, I need to remember to wrap tape around the wooden base. The Distress sprays react with the Snowfall Grit Paste. oops!

4) Geometric Box assembly! I cut the base pieces out of white mat board.

I cut triangles out of my Distress papers to fit onto the sides of the boxes.

I added Rock Candy Glitter to the stars. Nice sparkle!

5) I made some little houses for the lids using the Paper Village 2 Die Set. For the pink house, I cut it out of the Holiday Gray Woodgrain Cardstock and tinted with the Cocktail Party Crayon.

6) I glued the trees and houses onto the box tops and then added some Snowfall Grit Paste snow all around it and on the house roofs.

For a final touch, while the paste was wet I added some Rock Candy Glitter using a Glitter Duster. Extra sparkle is good!

The Haunted Mansion – Tim Holtz Village Die Set for Halloween

Happy Halloween! Lisa Hoel here and I have one last project for the season to share with you. It's been awhile since I created village scene in a lantern so I made this one as a birthday gift for some friends of ours.

Lisa Hoel for The Funkie Junkie Blog - Halloween Journal #creativejuicefreshsqueezed #tim_holtz #sizzix #mysizzixstory #mymakingstory #thefunkiejunkie #thefunkiejunkieboutique #frillyandfunkie

I based the design on the Disney Haunted Mansion book/ride. (Our friends are classic Disney fans.)

The house itself is loosely based on the illustration in the book:

Last fall Tim Holtz released an 87 piece Thinlits die set, Christmas Village, that was based on his wildly popular (and retired) steel rule Village die collection. This new set has much more flexibility with mix and match doors, windows, additions etc. so you can cobble together your own versions of mini houses. Check out Tim's excellent video where he explains his thoughts on this set and all the ins and outs. (More on how I constructed my mansion below.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GstjNChz7zo&t=963s

The background is alcohol ink on a large sheet of translucent Yupo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GstjNChz7zo&t=963s

The mansion grounds are filled with gravestones, ghosts and the frightened caretaker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GstjNChz7zo&t=963s
I scanned and printed pages from the book to fussy cut out the figures.

Of course there are also Halloween Tiny Lights as part of the scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GstjNChz7zo&t=963s

The vignette on the top of the lantern echoes details from the story (and a delightfully detailed Idea-ology Tombstone).

https://www.thefunkiejunkie.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TH94173
Arthur the owl and the Mischievous cats are stars.

Let's take a look at some of the how-to:
1) First off the bat was making the house. I cut the pieces out of Kraft Heavystock paper and inked them with Distress Oxide Pumice Stone and Hickory Smoke ink. I stacked the sides to make a multi-story structure.

2) The background is a large piece of Yupo paper I alcohol inked as a night sky. (You can get large sheets of Yupo at art stores. Ranger sells smaller sheets of Yupo cardstock packs that are perfect for card making etc. I also used the Moon Masks set to mask the moon while making the background and then adding the moon shadow details on the face of it.

3)  To add the tiny lights, I left a hole in the base of the house and hot glued several loops of lights onto the landscape platform. I then ran the wire with the rest of the lights around the front and tacked it into position with hot glue. I disguised the wire with paint and placed the bulbs behind bushes and gravestones.

4) The gravestones were die cut out of heavy cardstock coated with grit paste and painted. I used the Halloween 2022 Remant Rubs to add details.

5) The structure the top vignette is built on is an Etcetera Trims piece I hot glued onto the lantern.

Thanks for stopping by and Happy Halloween!! Time to pivot to Christmas LOL.
