2K Chaos Marines with IG allies V3

I have made a few more changes to the list after some more playtesting. I replaced the Vindicator after losing it's cannon in 3 games and replaced it with an AC/LC predator sporting a Dirge caster. Yup I got to expireince Flamers of Tzeentch in my backfield this weekend, the result was ouch!

I also ditched the Leman Russ for a reactionary unit of Terminators, they will protect the Warpsmith and can engage anything that gets in my backfield. I also used these points to give the CCW's to the Chaos Marine squads; I feel I need a leg up on those space marines I keep facing.

I also dumped the cultists for 2 more IG squads that will blob with a commissar. This should be much more effective than the cultists.

While I liked lobbing those three pie plates a turn I think this list in more effective.

Also I just want to point out the Defiler is a workhorse in this list! It really has been great; even though I still think it is about 15-20pts overcosted. That said it is really resilient now. It has only gone down in 2 of 6 games.

2k Chaos Marine Traitor guard list take 2

After having a long chat with my buddy Magilla Gurilla I have made the following changes to the list from yesterday.  While I hate to lose the Terminators (Cause I am a terminator freak) and Land Raider, I think the list has a lot more moxie, than the last one.

Basically the two HQ's got some useful wargear, I added 6 Nurgle bikers with 2 melta's to replace the Termies. For the Land Raiders cost I gained 16 traitor guard bodies including Marbo, 2 autocannons and 6 flamers. I also dropped the 3rd five man marine squad for 20 cultists and upgraded to a TLLC turret on the Predator.

In the end the list gained 31 infantry models, which are basically cannon fodder, but they should tie things up long enough for the armor and marines to do what they need too to secure victory.

I have decided to try making the Chaos Marine army focused on shooting rather than my more typical in the enemies face style of list. It is also high time I start utilizing Allies and Fortifications

As you can see I have 6 armored vehicles, which most would say is suicide in 6th, but I am not so sold on the idea. Most of my armor is AV 13 or 14 on the front and since I do not plan to rush forward I won't have to worry early on about melta's doing me in. .

I am looking forward to throwing 3 pie plates of doom a turn! Should be pretty effective since so many gamers have abandoned their armored pillboxes.

I will be deepstriking the Terminators to cause a distraction in the enemy backfield and using the Land Raider as an AV 14 anti-tank platform. Then late in the game mount up one of the Marine squads if need be and grab an objective.

I'll be using the Warpsmith to keep my armor up and running as long as I can.

I decided not to take a Heldrake as I feel the Vendetta is much more utilitarian. Equally good against both air and ground targets.

Feedback welcomed as always!

2k of new Chaos Marine madness

Here is my first list using the new Chaos Marine codex, it is utilizing models that I currently have so it missing the new stuff.

With the Champions of Chaos rule, I have decided for me it spells the end of power fist champions. Having to issue and accept all challenges, I'd rather get my swings in. So enter the day of the Power Maul and Power Sword.

As for basic Chaos Marines, they did get cheaper if you wanna give up one leadership and your close combat weapon. I won't do that, I'll pay the 16 points per model to have +1 leadership and my CCW's, plus hatred Space marines.

With the addition of Flakk missiles to the Havoc squads I am seeing a gain in 3+ boots on the ground in my list. Which is great in my opinion!

Bikes are amazing now with a base cost of 20 points per model. Holy crap! They are my go to unit for fast attack. The mark of Nurgle is only 6 points per model; so 26 points for toughness six bikers, yes please!

I see a lot of moaning about Chosen marines, I think they are better overall than before. (again in my opinion) They lost infiltrate big whoop, they gained an attack and one point in cost, but they are still rocking Bolters, Bolt Pistols and CCW's base. That for the math challenged is 3 base attacks! I feel that Chosen will shine with a mix of special shooting weapons and specialized CC weapons; making for a very versatile unit.

Chaos Lords have become amazingly cheap, but be warned it is easy to overspend on these killy monsters! I think that the average Lord is gonna run around 150 points which is pretty good for a killy character.

Be warned, all of our generic HQ's have lost their inbuilt Invulnerable saves, you must now purchase them. Another thing of note is that only the Chaos lord and Daemon Prince are Fearless.

HQ (145pts)
Chaos Lord Sevetus
The Black Mace, Sigil of Corruption, Vet of long war, Ichor of Blood
Total: 145pts

Elite (280pts)
Chosen squad Anamayus (8)
Flamer, 2 Melta, Power Fist, Power weapon, Vets of long war
Champ with Power weapon
Rhino: dozer blade
Total: 280pts

Troops (894pts)
Marine squad Decimus (10)
2 Melta guns, x-tra CCW, Vets long war, Icon of Vengeance
Champion with Power weapon
Rhino: dozer blade, havoc launcher
Total: 282pts

Marine squad Barbarus (10)
2 Plasma guns, x-tra CCW, Vets long war, Icon of Vengeance
Champion with Power weapon
Rhino: dozer blade, havoc launcher
Total: 292pts

Marine squad Grakus (15)
2 Plasma guns, x-tra CCW, Vets long war, Icon of Vengeance
Champion with Power weapon
Total: 320pts

Fast Attack (207pts)
Bike squad Agron (6)

Soul Reapers Challenge list

I have decided on my 2000 point list for the Challenge games. It was tough to create a list that gives enough Soul Reapers flavor yet remains quasi competitive. The list is far from optimized, but it'll be a hoot to play with.

I decided to use the Soul Reapers Possessed and the Harbinger of Malice as there is no way that I will finish the conversions for the pair of Mauler Preds I wanted to use.

I intend to do no proxy's in these games which is what I have been doing for the preds. Another thing that may happen in the game as much as it pains me, it that I may not have everything fully painted and based; as I am starting a new job this week. I am working feverishly to get things done this weekend, but it just may not happen. I've still got a crap load of bases to rebuild.

For HQ's I went for the one two punch of Titus and Xusia. This will also allow me to have access to most of the Soul Reapers psychic powers.

HQ (385pts)

Titus the Butcher 165

Xusia 220

Elites (420pts)

1 Harbinger of Malice 70
Plasma pistol, power weapon

Kill Team list ideas

A word of advice about building a Kill Team, your team needs as much killyness as possible, so there is no reason to take most troops choices unless you really want to. Kill Teams are elite units (not necessarily elite FO choices) sent on a special missions, with this in mind, make sure that you focus on the elite feel that the team should have.

Take units that have maximum access to special and heavy weaponry.

Here are a few Teams that I have used in the past:

Imperial Guard

10 Veterans
Sgt with bolt pistol and power weapon - Fearless
1 Sniper rifle - Relentless
1 Heavy Flamer
1 Plasma gun -Feel No Pain
Heavy Bolter team
Upgrade the squad to forward sentries (Camo-cloaks and defensive grenades)

1 Sentinel with a Multi-laser

total points 197

That's 10 dudes and a Walker!

Chaos Marine Kill Team 1

7 Chosen Marines
2 Melta guns
Champ with Power weapon - Furious Charge
Autocannon - Relentless
Flamer - Move Through Cover
2 standard Chosen

total points 196

That's also seven infiltrating models.

Chaos Marine Kill Team 2

5 Chaos Terminators
1 Reaper Autocannon - Feel no Pain
1 Combi-flamer
1 Combi-melta - Furious Charge
1 Combi-plasma
1 TL bolter and Powerfist - Preferred Enemy

total points 200

Space Marine Kill Team

6 Sternguard

Sgt with lightning claw - Feel No Pain or Furious Charge
1 Heavy Flamer - Infiltrate
1 Heavy Bolter -Relentless
2 Combi-melta
1 Combi-flamer

total points 195

Lots of killyness in there!

Space Wolf Kill Team (I have not used this one yet, but am dieing to try it out!)

6 Wolf Scouts
1 Plasma Pistol - Feel No Pain
1 Melta Gun
1 Mark of the Wulfen - Furious Charge
1 Sniper Rifle

1 Thunder Wolf with Power weapon - Stealth

Total points 198

6 infiltrating, scouting moving through cover dudes plus the Killyness of a stealthy Thunderwolf, what's not to love!

The possibilities are endless, but the best kill teams use the elite units from each dex. IMHO

PS: I will get the combat patrol rules up later this week as I am feeling a bit under the weather.

Havoc mock-up and two 1850 lists

Mock up of my first Eradicator/Havoc, I like my autocannon better than GW's,
cause theirs don't fit together right.

Well in the spirit of being different here is a new Chaos Space Marine list from the CSM codex.

HQ (130pts)

Daemon Prince 130
Wings

Elite (384pts)

3 Chaos Terminators 115
3 combi-plasma and icon of chaos glory

8 Chosen Marines 269
2 melta guns, 1 flamer, 1 pair of lightning claws, Champ with power fist and icon of chaos glory
Rhino

Troops (655pts)

10 Chaos Space Marines 255
2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino

5 Chaos Space Marines 135

Rhino

plasma gun, icon of chaos glory
Rhino

5 Lesser Daemons 65pts

5 Lesser Daemons 65pts

Fast attack (268pts)

6 Chaos Bikers with 2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
268

Heavy Support (410pts)

2 Obliterators 150

Dakka Pred 100

6 Havocs 160
2 Autocannons, Missile Launcher and icon of chaos glory

Total points 1847

Yes, you read that right it does have Havocs in the list, so I guess that means I auto lose! LOL Here's my thinking, havocs may be less mobile than Oblits, but they can put out more shots and have more wounds in the long run. Most things that will auto-kill a havoc will do the same to a 2 wound oblit. Besides autocannons are kool!

Titus needed a new pic, so enjoy!

Here is a Soul Reapers Mini-dex army list at 1850.

Soul Reapers Spearhead

HQ (385pts)

Titus the Butcher 165

Xusia 220

Elite (274pts)

8 Chosen Marines 274
2 melta guns, 1 flamer, 1 pair of lightning claws, Champ with power fist and personal icon, cohort tactics bonus +10pts
Rhino

Troops (770pts)

8 Chaos Space Marines 233
2 melta guns and icon of perpetual war
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino

8 Chaos Space Marines 233
2 melta guns and icon of perpetual war
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino

8 Lesser Daemons 104pts

8 Gore Daemons 200

Heavy support (420pts)

6 Eradicators (havocs) 150
2 Autocannons, 2 Missile Launchers

2 Obliterators 150

Dakka Pred 120
HB sponsons, havoc launcher, dozer blade

Total 1849

I'm dieing to get this list on the table as I have not used Titus in a while, and him combined with Xusia should be brutal!

What can I say, I like Predators; another Chaos Marine list

Ok so I added the personal icon to the Lord and the lightning claw Chosen marine. Here is how the list shaped up, I replaced a squad of Oblits for a Predator with lascannon sponsons. I like to be different, so 2 Oblits and 2 Preds should fit nicely into my playstyle.

The list is far from optimized, but I detest math-hammer so that is fine by me. In the end it all comes down to tactics and the luck of the dice!

I'm gonna run this list for a couple of weeks, I'll let you know how it goes.

HQ (175pts)

Chaos Lord 175
Bike, combi-melta, personal icon and Daemon weapon

Elite (384pts)

2010 tourney scene; third time is the charm?

After some more thought I decided to tweak the list again, as Oblits are so much better than Preds in general; so here is the third and final list. I am liking this one the best. It's got 50 bodies in it which is nice for a Chaos Marine army and uses every single one of its 1850 points.

HQ (275pts)

Krüg the Beheader (counts as Abaddon) 275

Elite (287pts)

3 Terminators (D/S Termicide) 105
3-combi-melta

7 Possessed Marines 182
(in Raider with Abby)

Troops (748pts)

10 Chaos Space Marines 270
2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor

10 Chaos Space Marines 270

Heavy Support (540pts)

2 Obliterators 150

Land Raider 240
Possession or extra armor and a dozer blade (I'm undecided which to use thus far)

Total points 1850 on the nose

Thoughts, opinions or feedback welcome.

2010 tourney scene second list

As a follow up to last nights post here is the more radical Chaos Space Marine list I was thinking about using. It has two suicide deepstriking, melta armed units to cause havoc in the enemy backfield. It also give Abaddon a fearless Possessed bodyguard to ride in the Land Raider with him.

HQ (275pts)

Krüg the Beheader (counts as Abaddon) 275

Elite (287pts)

3 Terminators (D/S Termicide) 105
3-combi-melta

7 Possessed Marines 182
(in Raider with Abby)

Troops (644pts)

10 Chaos Space Marines 270
2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor

10 Chaos Space Marines 270
2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor

8 Lesser Daemons 104pts

Fast Attack (120pts)

5 Raptors (D/S Raptorcide) 120
2-melta guns

Heavy Support (520pts)

2 Obliterators 150

Predator 130
LC sponsons

Land Raider 240
extra armor, dozer blade

Total points 1846

I do understand that not using the Icons of the Gods decreases the power level of the Chaos Space Marine list, but I am trying to stick to the Soul Reapers background as much as possible.

Gearing up for a late start in the 2010 tourney season

So real life has kept my 2010 tourney plans off track, things seem to be evening out now. I am now looking forward to the Iron Bolter tournament over Labor Day weekend in Sept at Pacificon and hopefully Da Grand Waaagh GT in October. Both are 1850 point events, and I have decided to go with and actual Chaos Space Marines list; so no counts as Wolves or Blood Angels.

To give myself even more of a challenge and staying true to the Soul Reapers background, this list will contain zero cult troops. Here is the first draft of the army, I have a second more radical idea but I'll save that for another day.

HQ (275pts)

Krüg the Beheader (counts as Abaddon) 275

Elite (395pts)

4 Chaos Terminators
3 combi-plasma, powerfist, heavy flamer, Icon of chaos glory
Land Raider, extra armor
395

Troops (885pts)

10 Chaos Space Marines with 2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor
270

10 Chaos Space Marines with 2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor
270

10 Chaos Space Marines with 2 Plasma guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power weapon and combi-plasma
Rhino, extra armor
280

6 Lesser Daemons 78pts

Heavy Support (280pts)

2 Obliterators 150

Predator 130
LC sponsons

Total points 1848

This is a themed list and I know going into this that it's not the most competitive build. Thoughts and feedback appreciated, if you make suggestions to the list please keep it appropriate. (ie: no cult troops or icons of the gods welcome)

'Ard Boys list take two

After three games this weekend, I've made some changes to my 'Ard boys list. The Spawn are just to unreliable for my tastes outside of casual play. I have dropped the Daemon Prince for a Sorcerer. That way I can use my nifty special character conversions of Xusia and Eris the seeker.

I am running the Possessed cause I have them and love the models; plus they may be a bit pricey they are not as bad in game as everyone seems to think. The sorcerer goes in the Possessed marines Possessed Rhino.

Terminator Squad Crixis and a tourney challenge list

Here is my converted Combi-plasma Terminator squad; as with all the rest of my Chaos Marines the horns had to go. So I decided to go with a Grey Knight style conversion.

I have been issued a challenge by a few of the local gamers to take an unmarked Chaos Marine force to a tourney. I walked in on a discussion about the uselessness of the non-cult choices from the codex CSM in the competitive scene. While I agree a non-cult army is not optimized toward winning, they can be competitive if run correctly.

So here is the 2000 point list I came up with. It is kind of an all or nothing list, it will probably win big or lose big. The walking terminators relying on DS is a big gamble, but it can be mitigated with the icons; the bikes can also help get them in a good location.

A look at Thunderwolf Cavalry, from the eyes of a casual gamer

I thought I’d give my take on the Thunderwolf Cavalry from the casual gamers stance, while I am waiting to see Adams keen take on the Thunderwolf Cavalry from a tournament player’s point of view over on the Space Wolves Blog.

I’ll admit that at first I wasn’t really thrilled with the concept of Thunderwolf Cavalry, but I have really warmed up to the idea. In fact after listening to Thunder from Fenris, I cannot imagine not fielding Thunderwolf Cavalry on a regular basis!

The really great thing is that as a unit they are pretty darned good, they are Cavalry so they are Fleet and they Assault 12 inches which makes them potentially very fast moving. Giving them at the worst a 19 inch threat range.

Thunderwolf Cavalry are also very tough with their two wounds and toughness of five only the most powerful weapons are a big threat to them. Opponents with a large volume of fire, is where the Thunderwolves have to be careful.

They also have a lot of useful options making them very flexible, just don’t go crazy with the upgrades! At the very least a couple with Melta Bombs, combined with the rest of them having Strength 5 Rending attacks can make them a serious threat to vehicles as well as infantry.

This is my Space Wolves list for next year, I will be taking as my Tourney list. I’ve decided to give foot sloggin’ Wolves a try, the first tourney of next year is in February so I have plenty of time to test it out!

For 2000 points I’d drop 2 Grey Hunters one with the second Melta from one pack, and 1 Grey Hunter melta from the other pack for two Drop pods. I’d also pick up two more Thunderwolves one with a Storm Shield.

For the Thunderwolves themselves I've got a few ideas for models to to use for the conversions.

PS: While you might be wondering why I have posted this here as opposed to over on the Space Wolves Blog I have done it for a couple of reasons.

Adam has a clear vision for the Space Wolves blog being a Mecca of all things Space Wolf, from modeling and painting to game winning tactics aimed at getting the most out of your Space Wolves, which is fantastic.

I don't wanna muddy the waters by posting my casual fluffy Wolfy spin on things. Because I am first and foremost a casual Beer and Pretzels gamer, with tournaments and worrying about winning running a distant third after painting and modeling.

After the Holidays are over you can expect plenty of conversion guides/tutorials and painted model eye candy from me over on the Space Wolves Blog, so keep an eye out for them in the New Year, if not a little sooner.

Cheers,
-Big Jim
