Bookmark and Share New Doctor Who Exhibition Planned for Cardiff

11/11/2018 11:16:00 pm - Reported by Marcus

A new Doctor Who Exhibition is being planned for the Welsh Capital by BBC Studios in association with Cardiff Council.

The new Experience is currently in development at Cardiff Castle, in the centre of the city, and due to be operational by the summer of 2019.

Cardiff previously hosted a Doctor Who Exhibition at a location near the TV studios where Doctor Who is made. It closed in 2017 leaving Cardiff council taxpayers with a £1.1 million pound bill.

The new location contains a medieval Norman castle as well as a Victorian Gothic revival mansion and is located in the heart of the city.

Although BBC Worldwide have said there are no plans for a Doctor Who exhibition in Cardiff, the item is listed on the agenda of the Cardiff Council Cabinet this Thursday.

Bookmark and Share Doctor Who Experience leaves Cardiff with £1 Million Bill

2/23/2018 11:11:00 pm - Reported by Marcus

Doctor Who Experience Logo - 2014Cardiff council taxpayers have been left with a 1.1 million pound bill following the closure of the Doctor Who Experience, which ran in the city for five years.

The building housing the experience was built by Cardiff City Council, using money from the Welsh Government's Invest to Save Fund, which provides financial support, on a competitive and repayable basis, to public service organisations across Wales. The cost of £2.4 million, was intended to be repaid by receiving a percentage of the exhibition ticket sales. However, it appears that ticket sales were not sufficient for the council to cover its costs, leaving ratepayers to pick up the shortfall.

Councillor Russell Goodway, Cardiff's cabinet member for investment and development, said
In 2011 when the deal was done to subsidise the Doctor Who attraction in order to bring it to Cardiff, the then-administration worked on the basis of ambitious projections for visitor numbers. Unfortunately the projected visitor numbers failed to materialise leaving the shortfall which should have been made up in ticket sales. This has left the council having to make up the £1.1m which will have to be absorbed by the council's budget. We are, however, working on plans for the building with the Welsh Government although nothing has yet been finalised.
The building, next door to the BBC Studios at Cardiff Bay, has been empty since the exhibition closed last September.

A spokeswoman for BBC Worldwide said:
The Doctor Who Experience was enjoyed by fans for five years in Cardiff Bay during its lease with Cardiff Council. The lease ran for its full, five year term and there was no additional loan agreement. We cannot comment on Cardiff Council's own business plan in relation to the site.
Adrian Robson, leader of the Conservative opposition on Cardiff Council said:
I still don't know how we managed to lose over a million pounds on Doctor Who. Somewhere the council and [BBC Worldwide] have not got their projections right for visitor numbers. It's very strange because this is a global brand.

BBC Worldwide have confirmed that the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff is expected to close next year.

BBC Worldwide told Doctor Who News that the lease for the building that holds the exhibition, which opened in Cardiff in July 2012, will expire next summer.
The Doctor Who Experience has enjoyed a fantastic five-year run in Cardiff Bay but, sadly, our five-year sub-lease from the City of Cardiff Council will come to an end in Summer 2017
The Doctor Experience opened in London in 2011, before moving to a purpose-built building in the Welsh capital. It is currently situated at Porth Teigr, Cardiff Bay, near the BBC studios where Doctor Who is made.

The site is leased from Cardiff City Council and currently features sets and costumes from the 54-year history of Doctor Who. It is not known if BBC Worldwide will attempt to open the Experience at a different location.

An online petition has been launched to try to save the Experience, as well as a twitter account.

Bookmark and Share Targetting 28th April

4/22/2016 11:21:00 am - Reported by Chuck Foster

As reported in February, BBC Books are to republish a number of Doctor Who novelisations that were originally part of the Target range.

To tie in with their release on the 28th April, the Cartoon Museum in London is to hold an exhibition featuring original artwork from the range:

An exhibition of original cover artwork to coincide with the reissue of these iconic books. Featuring over 30 pieces, including the covers from six of the new reissues, this is the first time that the artwork has been publicly exhibited. The exhibition will also include over ten covers by Chris Achilleos from The Daleks through to Revenge of the Cybermen, over 15 covers by Andrew Skilleter from Destiny of the Daleks through to The Mark of the Rani and other classic and well-loved original cover artwork such by Roy Knipe, Jeff Cummins, David McAlister and Tony Masero.

The exhibition will run between the 28th April and 11th May.

To celebrate the revived interest in what was an essential part of Doctor Who fan reading in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Telos have announced that they will be re-publishing an updated version of David J Howe and Tim Neal's guide to the entire range, also on the 28th April:

The Target Book (Credit: Telos Publishing)The Target Book
By David J Howe with Tim Neal
Published 28th April 2016

A new edition of the popular and acclaimed guide to the Doctor Who Target paperback range of novelisations. With an additional Appendix covering Audio and the recent BBC reprints of the books.

From 1973 until 1994, the Target Doctor Who paperbacks were a mainstay of the publishing world. From humble beginnings, they grew into a list running to 156 individual titles and selling over 13 million copies world-wide.

This is the definitive guide to the range.

176pp. Large format 22cm x 28cm hardback. Fully illustrated in full colour throughout.
David J Howe told us:
I was always very proud of THE TARGET BOOK - combining a lifetime's love of the books with the artwork and the history of the range - so it's brilliant that we can finally get it back into print again. The issue was always that, as a full colour, large format book, it was expensive to print, so we had to wait for technology to catch up so that it could be printed at a price which worked! I can't wait to see the finished edition!
The book is available to pre-order from the Telos website.

Forbidden Planet in London will also be holding a book signing on the 23rd April between 1:00pm-2:00pm, featuring the authors Terrance Dicks, Eric Saward, and cover illustrator Chris Achilleos.

Meanwhile, as well as their literary form, the Target novelisations continue to be released as audiobooks, read by well-known personalities in the Doctor Who world; coming up in the next few months are Death To The Daleks (written by Terrance Dicks and read by Jon Culshaw), The Invasion (Ian Marter, David Troughton), The King's Demons (Terence Dudley, Mark Strickson), The Claws of Axos (Terrance Dicks) and The Sontaran Experiment (Ian Marter).

11/08/2013 02:12:00 pm - Reported by John Bowman

The National Media Museum in Bradford has finalised details of its free exhibition showcasing Doctor Who fans' devotion to the series over its 50 years.

Following an appeal in the summer for items and stories, hundreds of personal objects were offered by members of the public for Doctor Who and Me: 50 Years of Doctor Who Fans, which explores what it means to be a devotee of the show in its 50th-anniversary year, bringing together items that people around the world have collected, created, drawn, assembled, and bought over the past half-century.

It resulted in hundreds of offers, and exhibition curator Toni Booth said:
Over the past few weeks it has become very apparent that the influence of the Doctor extends into many parts of people's lives - I have heard about marriage proposals at a Doctor Who exhibition in Blackpool and another fan confessing to me that in life, "I often ask myself: WWTDD?" (What would the Doctor do?). The stories and objects in the exhibition will show just how intertwined into their everyday lives the Doctor has become for so many people.

We have visited a number of superfans at home and they have simply incredible collections of Doctor Who-related objects. We hope to give a real insight into this ultra-dedicated few, as well as display the objects that mean the most to them from the hundreds of items they have amassed.
In addition to a vast array of objects loaned from the public, the exhibition includes fans' stories and experiences relating just how much they love Doctor Who and why, how they have organised themselves, produced fanzines, attended conventions around the world, and now make use of the internet and social media to discuss the programme.

Among the objects on display are the following:
  • A model TARDIS made in 1978/9 by then schoolboy Mike Tucker for his own amateur movie - he went on to become a visual effects assistant on the show during the classic era and model unit supervisor when the programme returned
  • Rare, original artefacts provided by David J Howe and Colin Young, including the Servo Robot prop from the 1968 adventure The Wheel in Space, artwork from Doctor Who annuals and Target novels (including art by David McAllister and Andrew Skilleter), and authentic 1970s Palitoy and Louis Marx toys
  • Some of fan modelling pioneer Julian Vince's originals, including his first Dalek
  • Several full-size replicas from the show, including K-9, Daleks, the TARDIS, Cybermen, and various monster masks
  • A very rare 1960s Dalek Oracle board game
  • A newly-uncovered poster of Tom Baker and scarf demonstrating semaphore
  • A postcard from the BBC sent to a young fan in 1975 outlining the instructions to knit a Tom Baker scarf - the resulting scarf, knitted by the fan's mum, is also on display
  • Memorabilia from the Longleat 20th-anniversary event, including tickets and a programme
  • 1970s/80s collector cards from Typhoo Tea and Weetabix
  • An original script from Dragonfire
In a change to the original plan, the display will now run from Saturday 23rd November to Sunday 9th February, and the museum - which also has free entry - has organised a launch party for Friday 22nd November to mark both the exhibition and the show's 50th anniversary. Starting at 7.30pm and open to all, this free event will give people the chance to have a preview of the exhibition and will also have entertainment in the form of performance poetry from Rod Tame, music, and a flash open-mic event for attendees. There is no need to book for the party - just turn up.

Anyone wanting to take part in the open-mic event, in which they can read some of their fan fiction or perform a song or a poem - basically, anything family-friendly that has been inspired by Doctor Who - must let the museum know by e-mailing Sophie Loftus at sophie.loftus@nationalmediamuseum.org.uk by no later than Sunday 17th November. Names will be selected at random and people notified in advance if they have a slot. The open-mic pieces should last no more than three minutes.

Bookmark and Share Dalek Takes Up Residence At Radio Times Exhibition

8/02/2013 05:32:00 pm - Reported by John Bowman

The exhibition marking 90 years of Radio Times opened today - with a Dalek taking pride of place at a special display dedicated to the programme that has appeared on the front cover more times than any other.

Cover Story: Radio Times At 90
, which is at the Museum of London at 150 London Wall, takes visitors across the decades from the first radio transmission to today's multi-channel offerings, through landmark broadcasts, archive clips, broadcast artefacts, and original Radio Times photography and artwork.

The exclusive Doctor Who display - marking the show's 50th anniversary and its long association with the publication - features covers as well as photographs from the Radio Times archive.

People can also become a cover star for themselves by posing alongside the Dalek against a backdrop of Westminster Bridge, re-creating the 2005 "Vote Dalek!" cover, which was voted most iconic cover of all time in the Periodical Publishers Association's Great Cover Debate in 2008.

Sharon Ament, the director of the Museum of London, told Doctor Who News:
From the TARDIS shaped as a 1960s-style London police box to the many episodes inspired by our capital city, the Doctor is a cultural icon with a strong affinity to London. We are over the moon to have a Dalek as part of the Radio Times 90th anniversary exhibition, along with original artwork and the weird and wonderful Doctor Who covers, which have graced countless editions.
The exhibition is free to go round and is open every day until Sunday 3rd November. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm, with galleries starting to close at 5.40pm.

Bookmark and Share The Radio Times Doctor Who Cover That Never Was

7/30/2013 12:00:00 am - Reported by John Bowman

It's the Radio Times cover that could have been but never happened - publicising the first episode of Doctor Who back in November 1963.

A special two-page feature in the new edition of the listings magazine - out today and covering 3rd to 9th August 2013 - takes a look at how Doctor Who missed out on the prime Radio Times spot at its birth, including a modern-day mock-up of how the cover of that edition may have looked, and thanks to Immediate Media Co, which now publishes the magazine, Doctor Who News is delighted to bring you a clean version of that dummy front cover.

The Cover Story: Radio Times At 90 exhibition, which opens at the Museum of London at 150 London Wall this coming Friday to mark the publication's 90th birthday, has turned the spotlight on a document from the BBC archive that reveals the corporation's doubts about the programme that has subsequently appeared on the front of the magazine more times than any other show.

Back in 1963, Radio Times existed to publicise only the BBC's output, and an internal memo by Donald Wilson, head of the BBC's serials department, to Douglas Williams, then editor of the magazine, complained that the forthcoming launch of the programme on 23rd November 1963 was not being supported by Radio Times with a cover feature. Dated 5th November 1963, it read:
I was unhappy to hear to-day that the proposal to give 'Dr Who' the front page of the 'Radio Times' had now been abandoned. It was particularly distressing to hear that one reason given was lack of confidence in the programme at Controller [Kenneth Adam's] level. I assure you that this does not exist and if you have a word with [him] I know he will express enthusiasm. I myself believe that we have an absolute knock-out in this show and that there will be no question but that it will run and run.

I would be most grateful, if it is not too late, for the decision against it to be reversed, and that will help me to get this show off to a good start.
However, Wilson's pleas for a reprieve as regards front-page publicity for the show's first episode fell on deaf ears and the cover star for the issue ended up being Kenneth Horne, publicising his popular Light Programme radio comedy Beyond Our Ken, although the new sci-fi series was granted a short mention in a side panel on the front, highlighting an article on page 7 of the magazine. Doctor Who would ultimately have to wait another three months and for the start of its fourth serial - the epic historical adventure Marco Polo - before landing a coveted front cover.

Radio Times wasn't alone in having doubts about the show, though. Many within the BBC were also uncertain what to make of this odd-seeming new drama, as the show's first director Waris Hussein - who also directed Marco Polo - explains in the new edition of the magazine:
Radio Times echoed the prevailing attitude, and it was only when the programme began to make its mark that the magazine started to give it a prominent billing.

As far as I knew at the time, the BBC was fairly indifferent to [creator] Sydney Newman's whole concept of Doctor Who. This was echoed in the placing of the production in basic facilities at Studio D Lime Grove. . . [Producer] Verity Lambert and I were newcomers entrusted with what was considered a fill-in show for children between Saturday football and Juke Box Jury. There was no apparent need to promote an oddball show. . .

Radio Times covers are very important in promoting a show and in the case of Doctor Who I'm proud to say David finally became bigger than Goliath.
Meanwhile, current showrunner Steven Moffat comments on whether he would have pleaded for a cover if he were running things back in 1963:
It's a different show now. I knew Verity Lambert and part of her back then was amazed it broke through in the way it did. For them it was just the show they were doing at the time and they had no idea it would become what it was. But when I look back on the historic Doctor Who covers, I can imagine being a child again and looking at it and scrutinising it and probably thinking, 'I want to write my own stories for it.'
The full feature appears in the new edition of Radio Times.

A postcard set of 101 classic Radio Times covers - including six from Doctor Who - will be on sale at the exhibition, which will have a special display devoted to the magazine's long association with the programme. The Doctor Who covers in the set will be the 5th-11th November 1966 one for the start of The Power of the Daleks and the beginning of the Second Doctor's era, the 1st-7th January 1972 one for the Season 9 opener Day of the Daleks, the 26th March-1st April 2005 one heralding the show's return with Rose, the award-winning 30th April-6th May 2005 "Vote Dalek!" one for the episode Dalek, and the 8th-14th July 2006 Daleks and Cybermen ones for the Series 2 finale Doomsday (and World Cup final!).

The exhibition, which is free, opens on Friday 2nd August and runs until Sunday 3rd November.
