Miles Davis & The Metronome All-Stars: Miles Davis (trumpet), Lee Konitz (alto saxophone), Stan Getz (tenor saxophone), Serge Chaloff (baritone saxophone), Kai Winding (trombone), John LaPorta (clarinet), Terry Gibbs (vibraphone), George Shearing (piano), Billy Bauer (guitar), Eddie Safranski (bass), Max Roach (drums). Tracks 1-6 recorded on October 8, 1951 in Los Angeles; tracks 8, 12-14 recorded on January 31, 1953 in Los Angeles; tracks 15-16 recorded on January 13, 1951 in New York City. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. Although its title might lead some to believe that this CD contains more "Birth of the Cool" recordings from Miles Davis, it actually consists of West Coast jazz performances that were influenced by those records. Trumpeter/arranger Shorty Rogers leads an octet that also features altoist Art Pepper and Jimmy Giuffre on tenor for six numbers; that date launched what became Shorty Rogers and his Giants. There are also eight performances by Gerry Mulligan's tentet (featuring trumpeter Chet Baker) and two selections from the 1951 Metronome All-Stars, an 11-piece unit that includes altoist Lee Konitz, Stan Getz on tenor, pianist George Shearing and Miles Davis himself.
