Happy Birthday Aya!

Image
and to celebrate, a link to one of her little movie things. and then there's Mark and the Aliens which mentions cousins and us. Click on the cover to read more. It does seem like we're supposed to give her gifts when it's her birthday instead of the other way around. Too bad.

We Got Apples, lots and lots of APPLES

Fine. Don't answer my question about that book. No one's read it. Anyway. Thanks to Aya, we got pictures, too. (and as usual, she's the instigator of the apple event)

I was going to do a Sept 11 thing

all about how as the dust settled we were afraid for the people we worked with (Muslims) and how I went out with them to the grocery store because we really did fear someone would try to harm them--especially the women in their traditional headscarves. Even though the mood was fierce and ugly, no one ever did anything more than yell a couple of obscenities. I felt relieved and proud of us Americaners. But then I remembered that my policy is I don't do those Sept. 11 things . And anyway, Aya just posted a new comic book online . The cover art reminds me of the old children's book stories about Tim who was always going out to sea . Edward Ardizzone illustrations. (Sorry, Aya. I know artists hate being told, hey that looks just like so and so's work . But there it is.) Okay. I'm going to slog through more revisions and then go read her comic book.

today

I'm over at the Samhain blog. I'm counting the minutes until the new Toshiba gets here. And I can at long last heave the Dell off the deck down, down onto the blacktop. Sure, I could donate it to some charity, but there is no charity I loathe enough to do that to. I can almost taste the glorious moment my three? four? years of pampering and coaxing this machine will come to an end. . . .In my mind I play the happy moment of impact. Crash. Tinkle. Yay. Maybe I should wait until Aya's here and she can tape the event.

real life and all

that's why I haven't been around. Aya's still here and has been doing more flash-pitcher-thangs. Now I want one of those little drawing things for the internet. Those are fun. Today's Quiz ( updated because I like Doug's definitition). CYMBALTA is: 1. a small island off the coast of Greece known for its olives and its anise flavored liqueur. Once a hot tourist spot, it fell out of favor after a group of radical communo-fascist separatists bombed a beach-side hotel. 2. A dance resembling the tango that was briefly popular in the early 1920s. It fell out of favor in part because Amiee Semple McPherson** refused to characterize it as either "wicked" or "heathen." 3. An antidepressant. 4. The plural of cymbal, a musical instrument for folks with no talent. _______ **interesting quote: "Whether you like it or not, you're an actress." - Charlie Chaplin to Aimee Semple McPherson

another sale to another start-up company. This one is Alexis Fleming's latest publisher. She and Lyn Cash and I wrote another of those connected series of books (I love working on those things) and Alexis really likes the total ebound people. Alexis and the other TEB person I checked with, Portia Da Costa, both enjoy working with the company a lot. It's kind of fun to see books for sale in other currencies. I bought a book there, just to make sure (okay, just to read it. Yay Sam Winston! It's a short, fun book) Their webpage was beautifully easy to use and the process smooth going. The store portion didn't mind that I wanted to play in dollars. I guess that's paypal's domain, but still easy, easy, easy. I finally figured out if you're an author who might hook up with an ebook company, the most important advice for you, young lady: Make sure it's simple to buy the damn books! Ebooks are usually such impulse buys--mine are, anyway. Anyway, if the site is...

aya, again (or bragging about family, again)

Image
I keep forgetting to up links to aya-chan's stuff, and she's fun, so now I will. T his is Morpha, a shortie. One of those cool morphing movies, but with pen and ink drawings. She's got an artist mom, an artist grandmom and it shows, says the proud aunt. picture of the artist grandmom (who posed for Soyer in exchange for lessons): This is Aya's ghost movie. No one draws a better outraged sparrow. No one . She lists her cousins (my boys) in the many thanks part and I'm not sure what they did for the script except perhaps argue a lot in front of her. "Rabble of troglobites" and "jackanapes" seems like insults they'd use. When they get going, they tend to sound a little like text translated by google with a thesaurus thrown in for good measure. They also tend to have discussions about trees falling in forests and memories and unmemories. I love the swimming squirrel. These are her Harry Potter Deathly Hallow comix.... that CONTAIN SPOILERS. Ring Around the Rosy Redux

Aya's response to the my post about kids' songs: I rebuked the "Ring around the rosy" song? Huh? I have the file of you singing the nuthouse song, if you'd like an MP3 or wave file of it.* I think I ended up tracing the nuthouse song back to a 1926 parlor song called “The Lunatic’s Lullaby,” created by Leslie Moore, Johnny Tucker & Edgar Leslie. Say the word and I'll send the parlour-song lyrics to you... Or a condensed version of my research on children's songs, for that matter.*** So the Ring Around The Rosy thing might have been my imagination. We'll get back to you on it after she does some more research. Snopes isn't on the case. We have to dig deeper. Aya (who's visiting) suggests starting with mudcat.org site, which looks like a lovely time-waster. Random lyric look up! ___________________________ * No, Thanks. ***Yes, please.
