Yellowstone

So, Floyd and I have always wanted to go snowmobiling in Yellowstone, but you know how it is when you have little kids - trips like that just don't really happen.  But, we finally got to go this weekend with a group of people from his work.  And, aside from the sweet snowmobile rental suits, it was perfect!

We left from West Yellowstone and rode along the Madison and Firehole Rivers to Old Faithful.  Since the Firehole River is geyser-fed and feeds into the Madison, neither of them were frozen.  They were so pretty against all the snow.
Old Faithful was faithful as ever - it was fun to see green grass there since the ground is so hot.

Last weekend, it was about 30 degrees below zero in the park. We totally lucked out and were actually hot whenever we would stop - it was about 30 degrees above zero for us.
I'm kinda nerdy, but I loved having a tour guide to tell us all sorts of stories about the area that they don't really print on the signage.  Very interesting.  He knew stories about almost every geyser or hot spring that we came to and I can't wait to take my family back and impress them with all the stories.

It was seriously such a fun trip.  I already want to go back, but next time I'll pack some cross-country skis along too and stay at the Snow Lodge for a day or two so that I can really explore the park.  It's amazing how much more I like winter when I'm not stuck in a dirty inversion.

Baptism

Someone had a big day last month - and apparently I was all pictured out from Christmas cause I only snapped two.
Sorry about getting too sappy and cliché, but seriously?  He's 8 already?

We're sure proud of you, Cole.  Thanks for being a good example for our family.

Blackmail Pictures {plus a funny story}

Ben decided earlier today to join Annie in her daily dress-up activities.  Today's choice was ballerina, so he really looked awesome.  And look at that form!  His teenage self will be so proud!
On the subject of Ben, here's a good story.  A few weeks before Christmas, Floyd was in the storage room with him when he found a dusty pile of old X-box games.  He asked what those movies were and Floyd told him they were video games.  A few minutes later, he picked up the stack of games and said, "I want to watch these dirty movies."  We'll never think of "dirty movies" the same.

And another tangent, Annie is getting remarkably close to exceeding my make-up applying skills.

Christmas

Only 2 weeks past and here are the Christmas pics - that's not too late, is it?  Cause I have some other old stuff coming up so let's hope not.  So Christmas.  We had a good one.  This will forever be known as the "Gator" Christmas because Ben has been asking for a Gator since oh, May or so when he first caught a ride on his cousin Josh's.  He started out by saving his money, but that's a lot of pennies, so someone convinced him to just ask Santa.  My bet's on Cole, but Floyd or Grandpa Clair could easily have been the culprit too.  We've heard a lot of talk about Gators the past few months, which led to a lot of clarification that this was a John Deere Gator we were hoping for and not just some silly alligator toy.  And good news!  Old St. Nick pulled through.

Ta-dah!

The fun part was that Cole and Annie have been almost as hopeful as Ben that Santa would bring a Gator, so everyone was thrilled when that was the first thing they saw.

And there were plenty of other goodies to go around - starting with some overloaded stockings.
Top on Annie's list was a new scooter to replace the one Santa brought last year that got stolen - yes, stolen, from our front yard.  The elves remembered what they made her and sent the very same one - along with a little note not to leave this one out.
Santa has it pretty easy with Cole - a large pile of books and he's all smiles.  Until the next day when he has finished them all and needs more.
Annie got "Caroline," the new American Girl doll.  She looks just like Caroline, so it was a perfect fit.  She loves reading the books that come with them.
Look away now, Grandma Rose.  You don't want to see this next part.  Santa left someone a BB gun.  And it wasn't Ben, much to his disappointment. And yes, we've told him "you'll shoot your eye out," at least once or twice.

After the house was sufficiently destroyed, Ben headed out for a little ride on his Gator.  Good thing the weather cooperated a bit that day, cause now I think it will be March before we thaw out enough for another ride (not that Ben hasn't tried, but those aren't snow tires).

And as a little bonus, Santa left the Gator box which is plenty big enough for three kids to fit in, and you know how kids love boxes.  Good times.

That afternoon, we went to Cache Valley to see cousins and grandparents.  Which meant, of course, more presents.

Annie has been wanting a pogo stick for awhile, so she was thrilled with this gift from Grandma and Grandpa.  Especially since it was purple and lit up.  Cole got one too, and Ben is just naturally a little kangaroo, so we are bouncing crazy around here.

The funnest part of the day was when Josh opened his present from Kaden.  He totally hates BYU, so confusion set in when he opened a lovely little BYU t-shirt.  He's got a good sense of humor, though, so he laughed along with the rest of us.

The real fun came when he opened his real present - a basketball autographed by the entire Utah State team and coaches (even Danny Berger after the incident).  His reaction was classic - way to go, Uncle Jake.  Er, I mean Kaden.  Good present choice.  I think he likes it.

Can it really have been less than two weeks ago?  Time goes so fast.  It will be summer before we know it.  At least, I try to convince myself of that when I walk outside these days.

Lights

About 12 years ago, my grandma got an apartment just off Temple Square for her 1-year mission.  She is still there.  It's been a rather long year.  I'd like it if she still lived in the house from my childhood so I could pop in there and feel nostalgia wash over me, but she really likes serving down there.  And once a year, it is a really handy jumping off point for visiting the Christmas lights (and actually, it's pretty handy anytime you want to do something downtown).  We went with cousins and the rest of the state of Utah to see them one night.

Here's my one attempt at bokeh for the night.  I'm a total amateur, but lights are fun.
We visited the fountains, which always necessitates the dramatic retelling of "the year Katie fell in the water fountain."  In December.  And yes, it was cold.  I was old enough to remember (also old enough not to be trying to retrieve money from the fountain).
Here are the cousins minus Ben.  There's always at least one doing their own thing.

There he is.  I believe he was making snowballs, which is, after all, much more important than a cousin picture.
Savannah and Annie were cooperative in their almost-twins hats.  They couldn't quite be twins cause Savannah's hat is a kitty and Grandma Rose knew better than to give my daughter a kitty hat.

And I am a little embarrassed to admit that the my claustrophobia kicked in and prevented us from making our way all the way to the nativity this year.  It was just soooooo crowded.  Next year we'll go on a Thursday.  Maybe that will help.

Kindergarten Program

Annie had a kindergarten program just before Christmas break.  Lots of singing - which she loves.  She did a great job.  The trouble is, my kids are not shorties, which I'm thinking they'll be grateful for at some point in their lives (maybe the boys more than Annie - she might have a hard time finding boys tall enough for her), but it means they are always on the back row, which makes pictures kinda hard.

The kindergarten kids spend a bit of time singing every day.  It was not Cole's favorite part of school, but Annie loves it.

Good job, Anneroo.  You were a star,

Eight is Great!

Cole went and had another birthday.  That kid!  Eight!  Can you believe it?  Probably you can, but I can't.  Because, you know it seems like just yesterday he was waking up 900 times a night and all that other sentimental mommy stuff.

He is quite serious about planning his birthday parties.  Actually, there wasn't really supposed to be much of a party this year since we had a big friend one last year.  Somehow he ended up with a friend party at our house and a swimming party with family at a hotel.  That kid!  He's a convincing little guy.

The good news is that our house survived the destruction of 10 2nd grade boys.  And really there is no bad news, cause what's bad about a birthday?

(that's a picture of our garage in case you are worried about my awesome-decorating skills - not that anyone will be calling Better Homes and Gardens anytime soon, but it's not quite as bad as this picture)

The swimming party was lots of fun, even for Mom who usually doesn't care much for swimming.  Or wearing swimsuits in her flabby December paleness.  It's a mystery why we don't have pictures of that event...

Happy Birthday, Cole.  I hope it was a good one. We love you so much.
