Pioneer Cemetery Tour

Dale's parents were visiting us on July 24th and we decided to check out the Bountiful City Cemetery, which was highlighting some of Bountiful's First Settlers. Little did we know that ancestors on both his mom and dad's side were some of these "Pioneers".
William Smith Muir (Dale's great-great grandfather) and Jean "Jane" Robb were born in 1822 in Scotland. In the early 1840's both Jane and William heard the gospel message and were baptized. They both had a desire to emigrate to America and join with other Saints. In January of 1844-just weeks before they set sail, William and Jane married. The newlyweds arrived in Nauvoo on April 18th. On June 1, 1849, William and Jane began their journey to Salt Lake City. They eventually made their home in Bountiful-in an area that is now Woods Cross. William had 4 wives and 36 children!
I'm grateful for these wonderful, faithful ancestors...
The Hogans were from Norway. Eleven years after leaving Norway, and enduring many hardships, including burying a 4-year-old daughter at sea, Eric's family arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. They eventually settled in South Bountiful, and were hard-working farmers. Eric was Dale's great-great-great Grandfather on his mom's side.

Nate & Sarah's Wedding...

July 8th, our nephew Nathan Ruben married Sarah Stafford in the Washington D.C. Temple. July 23rd was their open house held in Mo & Paul's backyard. It was a fun night to be together with family...
Congrats to Nate & Sarah!
It was wonderful to visit with everyone...we even got to meet the newest member of the family, Grace Ruben!
Josh kept all the kids entertained. They especially liked the "secrets" game. They had a fun time together!
COUSINS: Jensyn, Ashley, Sydney, Natalie, Jacob, Noah, Tanner, Oliver, Austin, and Camryn.

Handcart Days...

Friday, July 22nd was Handcart Days in Bountiful. This annual event includes a parade (which Dale & I had the opportunity?? to walk in-escorting a float), and of course fireworks at Mueller Park Jr. High which we can see from our front yard. Family and friends came to celebrate this event (and our birthday) with us. We made raspberry ice cream and the grandkids got in the hot tub.
The fireworks went on for over 30 minutes...this year "aerial" fireworks were legal so we also had a pretty good fireworks show in the cul-de-sac.

DOG days of summer...

July 20-23 while Brett and Lauren went to Vegas we tended Sage & Tank. The boys loved playing "fetch" with them. The dogs were gentle (most of the time)...

Love that face!
A rare scene...both dogs holding still!
July 18th we went to the Bees Game with D & Becca. It was the perfect night...overcast. I love this ballpark. It started raining in the 6th inning and the Sacramento River Cats (what's a river cat??) were killing the Bees, so we left.
A gorgeous Bountiful Sunset over the Great Salt Lake - July 14th. One of my favorite things about summertime...

July 14-16 Dale had the opportunity to go to Flaming Gorge with the Priests (Venturer Scouts) in our ward and their amazing leaders. He loves these Young Men and the chance he has to associate with them...one of the many blessings of being in the Bishopric!
IMPRESSIVE...Dale can still wakeboard! Way to go...

Investment in FUN!

These 2 toys, a "silly" sprinkler and a set of wooden blocks have provided tons of fun for the grandkids...I bought the sprinkler on clearance at Toys R Us for $5, and the wooden blocks were a gift to Darren from my parents when he was about 3-they have lasted a very long time! While the boys were busy getting wet, the girls were building a castle for their dolls...a fun "investment"!

OREGON-DAY 7...on the road again!

For our journey home we decided to take two days instead of one. We left Yachats at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and drove south to Florence, through Roseburg on Highway 138 to Crater Lake. The drive was beautiful. The Umpqua River was a gorgeous blue color, a color blue I've never seen before...
After stopping at Crater Lake, we drove toward Klamath Falls on Highway 140, and stopped in Lakeview for a sandwich at Subway. Our drive continued on a steep, crazy, deserted road for many miles (near Antelope Butte). By this time it was dark, and as we drove along we started hitting tons of jack rabbits (which would make Jensyn & Ashley scream)! A huge bird (most likely an owl) also crashed into the windshield. Luckily it didn't break-not sure how the bird fared...We arrived in Winnemucca, Nevada around 11 p.m. where we stayed for the night. We got up early Saturday morning and headed for home-through Ely, Battle Creek, Wendover and the Salt Flats-a pretty boring drive! We arrived home around 2 p.m...it's fun to travel, but it's always nice to be HOME!
So glad we took the time to see Crater Lake! It's five miles wide and rests in the shattered remnants of a volcano called Mount Mazama, which erupted and collapsed into itself 7,700 years ago. Crater Lake filled with rain and melted snow. AT 1,943 feet deep, it is the deepest lake in the United States and one of the deepest in the world....

OREGON - DAY 6

Before heading to Florence for a dune buggy ride, we stopped for breakfast at The Drift Inn. We wanted some of their famous raspberry crepes. There were 17 of us, and for some strange reason they said they were "out of crepes". We think the chef just didn't want to prepare crepes for that many people! We had a delicious breakfast anyway, and will have to go back another time for crepes...
Riding around the Oregon Sand Dunes was a blast! Austin and his car seat even got to go!
Next stop...Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, and Cleawox Lake. Highlights: Being together with my parents and my sister & her family, beautiful scenery, and watching the kids catch salamanders and kiss them! Maybe the girls thought they would turn into a prince!...
Lunch and shopping in Historic Florence...
On the way back to Yachats, we dropped Brett & Lauren off at the Yachats State Park. They wanted to walk back to the beach house and take photos. The rest of us went down to the beach behind the Overleaf Lodge and hunted for "haggets" (Jensyn's nickname for agates)...
Later that night, Chris family, Brynlee, Darren, and I drove to Newport to see the Movie Cars2. Dale wasn't feeling well, so he didn't come. It was a super fun day!

OREGON DAY 5 - CRABBING!

Day5 in Oregon began with the guys (and Lauren!) playing golf at the Sandpines course in Florence. Shan and I did laundry and played with the kids. After our adventure at Hobbit Beach, we went crabbing at the Port Of Alsea in Waldport. The bait is raw chicken! It was windy and cold, but we stayed until we caught enough to take home and eat!

Our "catch" consisted of 3 crabs. The requirements to keep the crabs are:
They have to be male and measure at least 5 3/4" across the back.
Jensyn & Ashley had a sleepover that night with Brynlee and Jaden at Mom & Dad's house, so they got to enjoy eating the "catch"! Those of us who didn't go to the sleepover, barbecued hamburgers (topped with some delicious Tillamook extra sharp cheese) and hot dogs...
