Marine Tactical Unit - 15mm Scale Miniatures

Painted pics from White Dragon Miniatures new Kickstarter 

Mark Stone of White Dragon Miniatures posted this pic of a painted version of one of his Marine Tactical Unit infantry alongside the massive, amazing Proteus Frontline Battle Mech. The render images of these were incredible enough, but this superbly painted example of the machine really shows it as the business.

This mecha, along with the MTU troops and their support Armadillo Support bot are part of a run away Kickstarter that promises some delightful stretch goals including an alternate Proteus with a railgun.

15mm.co.uk Releases Fleet Scale Mecha

Hello everyone,

Today's post is not just an advertisement for a new release but another beaming point of pride for me as a sculptor. 

You may recall a bit ago i set myself to the challenge of sculpting mecha suitable for use in games along side "fleet scale" spaceships. I use the term "fleet scale" as an umbrella for the many different actual scales used for the various spaceship lines out there and up until I sculpted these there really hadn't been many attempts at making old school mecha for these scales. What is an aspiring sculptor to do but to give it a whirl.

15mm.co.uk accepted these sculpts under the auspices of their SHM miniatures line but the minis are so different and so in a category all their own that they have given them their own little home on their site, HERE!

So go check them out or, as they like to say in the anime shows, "Ikimasu!!"

Hey everyone,

So, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that i sent off a mess of new stuff to Gavin at 15mm.co.uk for consideration for his SHM miniatures line. The bad news is that I forgot to snap pictures before packing them up, so all I can do is tell you what was included.

This batch was a bit different from previous batches as it was not 100% original sculpts. Though there were some new alien civilians including a street preacher, musician, and a bouncer/thug there were also several conversions off of previously released SHM minis of mine. These conversions take the form of four variants on the original Vergan sculpt - some of them armed. There is also a special project given to me by Gavin to made some variants on some of his Retained.

The final inclusions are the nine (9) fleet scale mecha I previewed earlier. These include five standard types and three that are "special". The last of these is a rather big mecha that looks much like some of the alien suits in the various anime from the 80s.

Sorry for not getting pics, but when you see them released in the upcoming months you may recognize some of them.

Fleet Scale Mecha Update

So, the fleet scale mecha project continues and is nearing completion. I thought I'd post a picture of the finished mecha. All six of them are mounted on a regular wine cork which should give you some idea of the tiny size here.

I've got 2-3 more to finish before I feel there will be enough to call it good. One of the remaining mecha is a rounder sort of mecha that is reminiscent of some of the "enemy" mecha that appear in various man vs. alien anime.

Fleet Scale Mecha Project - Scaling

Just a really quick update on the project. I snapped this pic really quick this morning with my phone and did some quick editing. It's not a detail shot, but it shows the scale of these mecha along side of some of Ground Zero Games fighter miniatures. I think they scale up nicely and should provide suitable representation of mecha on a space battles table without dwarfing most of the ships on the board.

Fleet Scale Mecha Project

Hey everyone!

So, if you frequent TMP or Starship Combat News, you may have already seen this, but I figured it was worth posting here for the fine folk of the blogosphere.

It has always surprised me that with all the fleet scale spaceship minis out there, and even some based on anime series, nothing has ever been done to create a solid line of fleet scaled mecha. I know Ground Zero Games made one and there are lots of micro-scale infantry that can be fudged into the role, but that still left a huge hole for purpose made, space action, fleet scale mecha. So I decided to make some.

As you can see above, these are really early WIP pictures, but the basics are there and at an average of 6mm tall, there really isn't too much room for detail that won't end up lost under paint. The order of the day was the main features - cockpits, heads, shoulder,s arms, kneels, feet, hands, guns. More less details can be added by clever painting, but these should paint of nice and easy. 

I have about twelve of these going right now. Each is a different design from standard to heavy. Variations such as aerodynamic torsos, square or round armor are also in the works. I didn't sculpt any with the shields that are seen a lot in anime as I figure those are easy enough to add, for the serious fan, using bits of plastic or thick paper card.

So, what makes these different than using a converted soldier mini or something? Mainly it's the posing and the fact that they are going to be cast baseless so they can be mounted on flight stands. I have tried to make them look like they are operating in space. Because most of them will be mounted on flight stands in formations, I did try to keep the poses neutral, taking inspiration from anime I have seen and know of. Some have been posed a bit more aggressively or dynamically but these are intended as elites or characters.

The really cool part is that once they are done, I even have a green light to send them to 15mm.co.uk to get them molded and cast. This will be exciting and hopefully there will be a lot of happy mecha freaks out there who can now throw mecha onto their spaceship tables instead of fighters or converted army men.
