Italeri French for Vimiero

Another side project I have is to re-fight the peninsular war battles solo when I can using Sam Mustafa's Grande Armee rule set. As I have a large quantity of 1/72 Napoleonic figures floating around I decided to use them for this. So far the Army of Portugal is almost complete so I shall make a series of blog posts showing them off.

These were painted in large groups, not really that detailed or accurate and I also played around with some flowers\shrubs I was given.

Below, are some of Kellerman's cavalry

A brigade of Chasseurs (Italeri). Is this the only Chasseur set on the market ?

  The Dragoon Brigade  (Italeri)

So yet another side project !. The last few months have been taken up with sorting out Romanians for Operation Uranus, however now they are complete I am working on the following at my leisure :

  • 1/72 Napoleonic Armies (above)
  • 15mm Sci Fi (For solo skirmish)
  • 28mm Sci Fi (For solo skirmish)
  • 1/72 Fantasy armies. (Orcs, Rats, undead, humans, dwarves, Elves and Conan the Barbarian.
  • A 1/72 medieval fortress and town.
  • Siege Equipment.
  • 1/72 Modern.
I shall make posts on these in turn...

Finished Units

I actually finished some units in the last few days which has been a good morale boost. I seem to have gone for so long without actually completing anything that I found myself preferring to read books or play computer games.

So to inspire myself I pulled out 24 Hat Saxons and promptly painted them as Spanish Infantry. I have toyed with creating a small force of 1/72 Figures in order to try Big Battles \ Small tables for the Peninsular war. I have the figures already and they are lighter than my 28mm horde so would fit nicely in a box and can play on my "table" (which is a bed). I have enough Spanish, French and English to re-fight any battle but they just need painting.

At the time the HAT Spanish were not available so I purchased the Saxon's to fill in and they do a reasonable job if one does not look too closely.

I also has two days off sick last week due to a heavy cold so I was able to finish the basing on my completed WSS Unit. I am glad I finished them but pretty unhappy with the unit as a whole due to a series of mistakes I made since putting them together. Its an imagination unit of the Rechburgian army, the rest of my figures will be French.

  • Figures pose selection was awful - I don't know why I included 4 firing figures in the mix.
  • Wrong officer figures for the unit.
  • Painting groups at a time and not using the same colours (I am not making the same mistake with my Spanish)
  • Missing steps - The faces are really bad I am actually redoing them. They have eye sockets that I may have to paint as eyes.....goldfish eyes of course.

Identify Figures - Hinton Hunt \ Hinchcliffe ?

Hi,

I have Napoleonic Figures of many many manufacturers and when rifling through some boxes found some that I have no idea who has made them. I suspect two are Hinton Hunt but the rest most likely mini figs version 1 or Hinchcliffe - Any help would be great !

In other news after a few visits to Archduke Piccilo the WSS forces are out and being made. I have had spare time recently but motivation still flutters around. However something bad is happening and that is 1/35 scale modelling as it is actually what my brother and I first started doing when we were 10 or 11. I am slowly making 1/35 scale figures for dioramas, for a reason that still alludes me BUT as we all know this thirst must be satisfied !. Peter Jackson and his Turks are to blame

Fluro Trees

Some years ago I found a rather cheap source of trees from China, so in true form I purchased a number of them. In hindsight they are cheap and BRIGHT, especially the fruit trees but they are slowly growing on me  .........over time. I need to base them up, as I need trees so I was thinking maybe spraying them with a little dark green to tone them down.

Speaking of bright colours - I am also pottering around with my old Minifig Guard units. I recently picked uo some spare figures to replace some losses and recently painted them up. However, the close up photo has me hissing as they look rough at guts. Lovely colours though, I really like the blue, green and reds I use these days (Vallejo and Citadel).

I did think of replacing them with new plastics but considering my army is made up of Hinchcliffe, Hotspur, Front Rank, Perry and Redoubt then I guess they fit in well enough ! Looking at the closeups I am amazed at some of the horrid lines and blotches, though I have started wearing glasses for driving I wonder if I need them for every day things (Or just better light).

Quatre Bras

I have managed to play several games recently and they have been good fun. I should have probably rested as I am working around 50 hours a week and am quite tired but you can never say no to Napoleonics.  The first game was a re-fight of Quatre Bras but in this game the French did not know it was a re-fight.

Andrew and I commanded the Allies while Ross and Jim took the French.

The game started with the 3 Dutch\Nassau\Belgian units being spread around the villages while hordes of French appeared. We were hidden of course so it was only when the French got near did they find out what was in front of them.

As the french advanced the light artillery opened fire and knocked over a few stands of Frenchmen,.
While the French got close to one of the farms and found it defended by a single battalion.
They promptly threw this battalion out with ease and sent it swarming back over the stream. Luckily for the allies the reserve brigades were arriving on the field and Dutch managed to shore up the line.

Pretty soon it was red coat heaven as he main British forces arrived and saw off the French.

The last moment of the game saw the French Cavalry charge British infantry - it did not end well. The Lancers did not charge home and the Cuirrassiers could not do much against the infantry.

Another enjoyable day. The scenario was quick and most likely should have let the French have some more time to get going. But alas British history will say otherwise !

CWC Waterloo Refight.

This last weekend was spent in a very enjoyable 28mm Waterloo Refight at the Christchurch Wargaming club. Organized by Basil and Mike it attracted around 15 players and their combined Napoleonic collections.

It was the first time my entire French army has taken the field (as Reille's Corps) and the game also saw Archduke Piccolo's forces form Lobau's Corps, Chasseur's French as D'Erlon and a good hodge-podge of others collections. I must mention Napoleon (Our very own Archduke Piccilo) was not there on the days until late as he was ill with a virus so Chasseur truly took over in his role of Ney. Chris Packer was also an excellent help with the finer rule details that we had not encountered in our practice games.

Below - from Belle Alliance to Hougoumont Reille's Corps are deployed.

And in a strange circumstance I ended up commanding the entire Corp while on the other flank one Corp had 4 Divisional commanders. I guess Hougoumont scared them and they would have also been attracted by all the Pretty Cavalry on the other flank.  In the end I even took control over Lobau as he arrived as no one seemed to want to take over - So at the end I was controlling 2 French Corps which was very enjoyable and also challenging.

My task was to ignore Hougoumont and attack the British between that stronghold and Le Haye Sainte  which I did with gusto. I recommended to Ney that he ignore this flank and send the Guard and Lobau to the right of Le Haye Sainte which did occur though some delay was encountered getting them on the table.

Due to an oversight in the OOB's (Unit strength was reduced by 50% except for guns which seem to have been overlooked) I had to attack in the face of 7 batteries of 4 guns. The overstatement of artillery and smaller units simple meant barely any French could get close. The artillery rules also seemed failry generous to the firer as you could simply point all 7 batteries at one battalion and ping pong around the table doing that.

However this did stop the Reille ! Below the troops brave the cannonade and  surge forwards - the table was far too wide and my back is killing me now !.

Into the Foot Guards surged the 61st Line and the Foot Guards ran for the hills,

The Archduke's forces surge onto the Field as Lobau. They did not see any serious action but they did look the part.

Some of my Prussians even managed to sneak onto the field. (Excuse the bases as I did them the night before !). Next to them are Chasseur's Prustrians !

Time ran out here. We could really have played another days worth of moves which I think we have shown the French to be triumphant. It was a good (but long) few days and I am tried and sore - and its Monday tomorrow so not rest for me !.

More 25mm French

Hi,

Work and a family illness have meant my time has been spent in other places or my mind at least. I've been working a lot recently in my spare time plus I was in Melbourne so I spent a night painting figures last night and I am all the better for it.

More work on my French for Waterloo. I need to do another 4 or 5 units in 6 weeks.

I also picked up some HAT 28mm Light infantry to bolster my forces for Waterloo.

They are tall but slender figures - they match Hinchliffe well for size but not Front Rank. I have started painting a test figure - he is half done currently. They will make excellent Light troops for Waterloo !

Several great Hobby shops in Melbourne stacked with loads of figures that are hard to get here in NZ. Was a great experience !

New Camera Joy

I'm having great fun with this camera as now I can take photos anywhere and anyway I please.

In between Turks I painted a space marine off a GamesWorkshop Youtube clip. I played a single game of 40k in 1996 - I can't stand the game but I have 20 Space Marines simply as I wanted to paint them. I've yet to master a decent lighting system for my photos yet.

Next are the 100 or so Hotspur french for the Waterloo re-fight. They have been undercoated black and have had the dry brush of grey on the black bits as per Chasseurs Painting guide. I am following this for a large task to see if I can save any time or better my own processes.

As such for Waterloo I need 14 Generals. So the old classics are being retouched and below is an old figure. I don't know the make - it almost looks like Hinchcliffe.

2 minifig Guard units ready to be blacklines (Im not repainting these guys - just a subtle blackline)
And I found a bag of these lads. Very old figures and I have yet to determine the make.

Tamames 1809

My Spanish army has had another outing and another victory for Spain.

Below - The First division fires its volley and then runs away.

Last month we fought the fictitious sequel to this action San Cristobel in which the Spanish army fought a glorious fighting retreat against the French. So we decided to give the actual battle a go despite how difficult it would be for the French. Historically Marchand thought he could defeat a large Spanish army with a Division but found his skills were lacking for the task. The french players had a hard task, Marchand really was out of his depth and severely outnumbered but he went in anyway.

Details are over at Colin's blog Tamames

In this re-fight Jim and Ross went for a right hook against the Spanish lines. The Spanish Division was overrun, the regular infantry and artillery firing to the last while the raw units around them ran for the hills at the slightest large noise.

My plan was simple, let the French take the first line but make them pay dearly for it. Then suck them into the poor terrain where hopefully they would run out of steam on the Second line and then the Spanish would surge forward.  The french attack was strong but once again at the crucial time vital units were milling around out of action and then french ran out of men. As those missing units finally got involved it was too late.  If those extra 4 or 5 units had of been in the strike point the Spanish would have been in big big trouble.

A wave of French infantry surged over the 1st Division - the gunners died at their feet,  the raw troops ran for the hills, French cavalry crushed a militia square and the Spanish second line looked on nervously.

However in the midst of the french storm stood the Principe Infantry Regiment.

A brief interlude -   In my history of wargaming I have had two units that have become the stuff of legend. The first was the 33rd Foot who 20 years ago earned themselves an unsavory reputation. In every action they routed, not in the thick of battle of course but in extreme circumstances (oh look its raining - ROUT, French artillery killed 1 figure - ROUT). The 33rd was the worst performing unit of my British army, in fact any army with the dubious honour that it never finished a battle still on the table in any fit state.

The next Regiment started earning its reputation 6 years ago - A Spanish Guard unit that proved itself to be an irresistible and unstoppable force in any battle.  It always ended up at the critical point, holding back masses of the enemy with a sheer arrogance of will and luck that still astound me. In the previous battle it held Ventosa against 6 times its number, and then marched out in good order.

At Tamames wave after wave of french troops attacked and were repulsed. Luck was on their side as it always is with the Regiment holding out against all. It was the this point the the French morale started to fail, a steady stream of units routing to the rear and at this point the French abandoned the attack.

Above - Principe Shaken but not stirred - The pink beads on the French means they are broken, a lot of pink was used this day !

The game was concluded here. The very next turn I was going to unleash the Spanish army in counter attack but it was not needed.

San Cristobel 1809

Bonjour de Nouveau Caledonie,

My final night in New Caledonia, the French holiday hotspot in the middle of the pacific. After several days of subjecting the locals to my not so fluent french I finally caught up on reading blogs.

I would also kill for a cup of tea. Milk is hard to come by here and I have had only one brew in 4 days. NZ tomorrow and a good few pots of darjeeling are needed I think.

Now allow me to direct you to a report of my Spanish armies latest outing - a stunning victory at San Cristobel.

Paul, Duke de San Cristobel and myself conducted a fighting retreat with the utmost precision against French forces trying to cut off our line of retreat. The Spanish army moved in unison, fought in unison and bloodied the french with every step. An absolute miracle !

(You know things are going well when half way through the game you have only taken a single hit and the enemy has lost regiment after regiment.)

The little village at Ventosa was a salient in our line but I thought it would fall quickly. The french scoffed at the troops there so I made a simple statement.......""Look at them they have bearskins on".

And thus started the legend of an Epic Spanish Victory

Luck was on the spanish side this day. When a devastating volley was needed it came, when our position became difficult the french stumbled and we made our escape. When the French finally managed to clear their traffic jam and spread across the field I thought "oh dear this is about to turn ugly". Infantry upon infantry across the line, cavalry looking at my donkey cavalry. And at that moment they became distracted by Ventosa and it brought us precious time indeed.

A thoroughly enjoyable game all around. To make things better we just wholloped england in 12 overs. I must have been the only person in Noumea watching it, drinking bad french beer and yelling at the tv.

Next task - more 28mm French Allies.

The best photo my phone can take - My current phase of getting the 28mm French allies back up to scratch.

I'm not into all this ipad\iphone nonsense - all it needs to to is ring and  text hence low quality photos ! Hopefully I can find my old point and shoot soon or pick up a cheap replacement.

A new round of troops to be finished\started.

96 Hinchcliffe Saxons(Reg du Roi, Reg Von Low, Reg Prince Max, Reg Prince Auguste)
14 Perry French Hussars (10th Hussars)
24 Minifig French Legere (8th Legere Regiment)
24 Hotspur French Line. (84th Line Regiment)
24 1/72 Confederate Cavalry
15 or so 28mm casualties.

A real mix of manufacturers and why I love this army - build up over 25 years from different sources and countries. Front rank are nice figures but once you paint 24 you get bored, I like the variety different manufacturers can bring.

The time frame to do this is 2 - 3 weeks. Some big nights will be needed but its why this army is in this state - I've only done a unit here and there over the last 4 years - I need one big hit and another third of the task will be done.

February will be a crap month as I'll be in French territory perfecting my pigeon conversational skills.

Camera woes

Hi,

I've been up to a great deal recently but my camera is finally about to die so I cannot get any decent pictures of any progress.I have a game against Mark tomorrow so I have re-based and repainted under -half of my "French" Napoleonic forces. Over the holiday period my schedule suffered greatly as my daughter was staying up (or trying her best to) late at night, and the cat recently has been very clingy. One thing about deaf cats is that they can be incredibly loud when they want to be as they have no volume control (imagine the following https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZzCRyZ70ow)

I repainted several units before Christmas (Earthquake damaged) and then have spent the last 4 days basing using Marks Technique as my units are dreadfully inconsistent (That's what happens as units are acquired over 20 years). I'm quite pleased with the results so they shall look good on the table - 240 figures all up from a range of manufacturers but I left the cavalry off most of the list.

I plan to complete the refurbishment of the other 15 Infantry, 8 cavalry in the near future and then move onto the Prussian and Russian forces (Quite small compared to the French).

French\Con. of Rhine.
  • 3 Dragoons Regiments
  • 2 Lancer Regiments
  • 1 Hussar Regiment
  • 1 Chasseur
  • 15 Infantry Units.

Allies
  • 7 Prussian Regiments
  • 3 Prussian cavalry
  • 7 Russian Regiments
  • 2 Cavalry Regiments
  • 4 British Infantry
  • 2 British Cavalry - Guns et all.

It takes me 3 days to completely repaint 24 28mm figures and 3 Days to base 10 Regiments. I plan to repaint\paint a at least a unit a week and then base them in large groups every 4 weeks or so.

As well as to other little projects on the go and fit some solo games in. Quite annoying the camera is kaput as I want to actually take some photos - oh well her is one from an old campaign game back in 2011 - the Spanish armies victory at Azuel 1809.

Cats and Wargames

We obtained a cat from the SPCA and at night (When my daughter is asleep) it likes to be near me (Where I am usually painted at the kitchen table). In the last few nights it has found the paint pile an interesting place and keeps jumping on the table (Where it is not allowed).

However the cat is tone deaf so no amount of talking to it will help. I have to walk around the table and pick it up from the front (Otherwise it gets a fright being deaf). I must have done this about 10 times last night so my output is being affected but I guess it is good exercise.

I have started to re-base my French and so far have changed 6 units around, finished painting another 2 and am just about to finish repainting one more. Then I'll tidy up my cavalry and fix some guns (the guns were shattered in the quakes) and then I'll have a handy small force for a game. All the standards were busted in the earthquakes too so more work is required on those.

Then I shall continue on with my Saxons and Hotspur figures, then maybe the Russians and Prussians too..........and that Austrian unit I have floating around.

To make things worse I have almost finished my 6mm 1815 Prussian Army for solo games. And when I mean games, I mean Plancenoit at Battalion level.

Blast from the Past.

My first purchased 25mm Napoleonic unit was from Military Miniatures in Auckland and was 25mm Hotspur French - I picked up 50 odd figures and 12 Chasseurs. Over my 10 year hiatus and the next 15 or so years the infantry dwindled down to 34 odd figures so I looked at finding if any more. I found the sculpter had passed away, some if its other ranges still existed under other companies but the Napoloenic line had dissapeared from the world. I managed to find another 10 figures at a swap meet and I also asked on a few forums if anyone had any (Surely i coudnt be the only person that had them) but no luck - Some NZ war gamers mentioned having them but they were sold.to others and their fate was unknown.

As they are my first ever unit (and my favourite figures to be honest) they are my favourite so I gave up getting more.  But a few weeks ago I tried one more time and I asked on the yahoo groups NZ forum if anyone had 4 of the figures so I could finish one of the units and a fellow wargamer replied. The end result is this, 100 or so beautiful little 25mm Hotspur French figures FREE. Thanks to the Brian at the blog Woolshed .

He wanted them to find a home (He had a load painted up himself) and gave them to me free and I am very thankful. (Of course I have his address from the packet so I'm sure something will find its way into his letterbox soon ;) as a thank you).

So I now have enough for 5 Units (plus my existing re-painted unit (Finished last night) which then leads onto another problem - I've been repainted a napoleonic unit every few weeks and that urge to do more is starting again. Considering I have 150 Hinton Hunt Saxons, 40 minfigs,40 Italians and 30 odd cavalry to finish up (As well repainting 6 existing Front Rank units) I could do with a good French Napoleonic phase - (The Russians and Prussians need a rebase and touch up too but the few British I have I might sell). What is the grand total of the French - well its a lot (Too many to be honest but you can never have enough can you).

French - 6 line (@24 figures), 1 Cuirrassier (@12), 1 Chasseur, 2 Dragoon, 2 Lancer
German Allies - 20+ units (@24), 1 Cuirrassier, 2 Hussar, 1 Dragoon
Guns for Africa.......

Prussians and Russians (About 12 units each plus 4 cav each)

I should really have a game with them.

A side note - As part of my 6mm armies I picked up a few aircraft and I have been painting them as I do the ground forces. Below is a Me109 for the France 1940 games I plan to play solo. I quite like how it turned out though I have to say basing them on the stands has been an epic journey. I drilled some holes but my first attempt failed so after about 4 attempts as a last resort I used super glue.

More plastic fantastics.

I had hoped to achieve a lot this week but I have managed to pick up a cold which has curtailed things a great deal. I am off to Melbourne on Friday night for most of next week so hopefully I'll get to visit the great Victorian Hobby Centre and pick up some figures unavailable in NZ or simply have a good nose around in a fully stocked hobby store.

In the meantime when I was bored I painted some 1:72 Napoleonic to use for the odd Skirmish games.

Italeri British.

Quite a nice pack this one, the figures are a lot skinnier than the French counterparts.

 Italeri French

Another nice set , the figures are chunkier than the old Esci ones I used to have. They paint up well and really look the part.

And the first repainted figure of my Hinchcliffe Saxon Jaeger as  testor. I haven't had the motivation to start the other 99 figures.

I've also been sorting out some other little piles of lead. Basing 6mm figures for solo wargames and then a white spray undercoat.
