Podrophenia - Eclectic Ladyland with Doug Kaye
In the later sixties. Doug Kaye worked at his brother's Brook Street restaurant Mr Love - where Jimi Hendrix rented a small apartment above the shop, Doug was also the resident DJ at Mr Love and is featured in the recreation of Jimi's flat, and in the book Hendrix at Home.
Most of the albums played in this Podrophenia have been touched by the hand of Hendrix as Doug regularly lent albums to Jimi. So buckle up for crackling, popping top quality tracks from Doug's vinyl collection with tales of his time at Mr Love including meets with Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, Keith Moon, Dave Mason, Dusty, Richie Havens, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and a ton of others...

Which way did I choose? Tune in below at 50 minutes in for the reveal...as well as first singles, gigs and album info.

M is for....
Monkees, Mother Earth, Moroder and possibly even Manfred Mann
After a bank holiday break, Piley and I are installed back in the Chance Radio bunker for the 13th instalment of the Podrophonic Alphabet - the Letter M. There'll be a couple of pop quizzes, Piley's Newsround - and Fi Jacobs from The Railway Hotel joins us for a Railway Round-up. Dig in here from 9.
The single edit of a magical Moroder moment..
Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity
Spot the sample? Which Essex band borrowed this horn riff for their own use? And is it my grizzled old ears or do the Manfred's sound frighteningly like The Charlatans here..

Pop Quiz - Carry on Loving..
Live from 9 - tonight's Radio Podrophenia is pitched around the themes of ' Love and Hate'. Expect a few smoochy(ish) doings from The Sonic Executive Sessions, The Sonics, a Supremes instrumental rarity , a tune titled after this Carry On film - and a mystery artist. Along with handful of angry songs sung to you by Gil Scott Heron and Southend premier punk legends The Machines.
One track almost popped into my Tuesday night hamper was this full and fruity number from another mystery artist - but who is it geting himself into a cross-eyed tizzy.

Pop Quiz: Music for Schools and Colleges
Piley and I go back to school this evening, not in the literal sense, but by assembling a register of 12 tunes to be called tonight: XTC, Ben Folds Five, The Casanovas and a legendary blues-grinder gets on the good 'n' funky foot - but who is it ? Find out from 9 on Chance Radio.

But for today's test, which Schools and College progs were these the themes for?

The Lopsided Pop Quiz: Name That Tune (in 4 seconds)
I say lopsided as I can't give you the answer - but hope you can burst my bubble of baffllement. Lee Perry's Cow Thief Skank tune I'm fine for - it's those four snatched seconds of soul stomping, nipping in at the intro, that's got my noggin boggled.
My guess is, given Lee Perry's relaxed attitude to studio techniques and technicalities - that this track was on the tape before pressing the record button.
I've Googled it, Shazzed it - not a sniff. Any hints, tips knowing nods would be massively appreciated..so it's over to you pop-boffins

Pop Quiz: The Golden Hour with Simon Bates
Hello bloggers and browers. Simes here, you may remember my resonant rumbles and mahogany tones from features like...
The BBFC intro's on clunky old VHS tapes., The Golden Hour, Our Tune *reaches for a large onion and a box of mansize Kleenex* Look loves, can't hang around I've got a show going over on Smoove and a couple of voice overs to crack off during the ad' breaks - but while I'm here how about a quicky game of The Golden Hour...
This timeless poppet of a tune could come from almost any era - sixties or seventies, nineties or naughties. Of course it can only be one of them... But - which, was the year
Factory - Gone
You could do the Googledoodledoo - but you'd only be cheating yourselves/

The 5 O'Clock Reveal - He was......
Well done to Simon and Office Pest for knowing but not naming - and close but no button-down to John Medd. Right, I'm off for a blow out at Blow Up tonight, where I'm sure there'll be plenty of vintage Shermans shaking a retro-leg to Baltic Fleet, Silvery, The Bongolian and Big Boss Man..
If you are rocking at the Relentless Garage tonight, I'll be probably bar-bothering in an overly-patterned check shirt. However if you're not hoofing Highbury Corner way, why not drop in at Davy's or Drew's for a Friday night scoop and a tune..
But, before bolting I'll wrap up with someone who's hugely overdue for logging in the blog..
Fabienne Delsol - Mr Mystery
Pop Quiz: Clue Are You?
You know him! You do - well his name anyway. But who is he?
A couple of pointers for you...
He's a non-music biz contributor to pop culture.
Born in Brighton, died in 1987.
And a hint expressed through the medium of Lee Perry

Keeping It Peel: Podrophenia 11 - Sound-a-likes (and a Pop Quiz)
Organized and arranged by Webbie from the Football and Music blog, The John Peel memorial day Keeping It Peel blazes it's way across the blogs today. Piley and I are chipping into the days doings with Podrophenia 11: Sound-a-likes is the theme so, expect an ear-opening, eye-popping playlist of lifted riffs, recycled styles, stolen vocal tones and even own brand versions of bigger bands.
With a playlist featuring some of Peel's favourites and Peely peeves, you can grab and stream below - or take away via iTunes..
Podrophenia 11
It's a Pop Quiz - we didn't have the space to fit this comp into the Poddy, so have a punt here pop pickers. Seven snippets of sound-a-like licks and riffs. I'll give 1 point for spotting the original riff and 1 point for the rip off . A total of 14 points to be bagged then: but how many can you manage? Be warned, it's a bit nippy, so you may need to replay a few times
Once you've lent an ear here - why not zip about the blogs and see what other Peely treats are on offer. The list of participating sites can be found here...

Q - what should he be listening to on his iPo'?
A - Podrophenia number 9! (DL link is at the bottom of the page)
A pod-quiz where Piley, myself and assorted text guests have a pop at cracking the conundrum of two mystery mini-motifs (one from Piley, one from me) over a playlist of ten tunes. Why not tuck in below and see if you can out-noodle the collective think tank that is Team Mondo:Tronik Youth Marmite John Medd

Funky Friday - The Hardest Working Man In Snow Business
It's a Pop Quiz - I can guarantee - guarantee, you won't unmask the secret Santa performing the opener from today's sackful of goodies. Although, in all fairness he's mainly famous in the States. Full marks to Coops for putting this slice of fleet-footed festive funkery on my 'sleighdar'. Santa's Got A Brand New Bag is a cracker that shimmies and shakes likes James Brown on ice..
So what else is on the Christmas list today? The Godfather Christmas of Soul shaking a festive leg with Shrek and Boogaloo Santa busting full bearded moves.

My First Vinyl Rip!
Phew what a slog lumbering back to business-as-usual after two weeks slumbering around in a laid back state of lazy days, lay-ins and beach-bumming. Southwold is an absolute gem, Walberswick is wonderful but windy and Aldeburgh is King's Road on sea (apparently it's become something of summer playground for the Rock, Cowes and Salcombe set)
But to put some gloss on the gloom, after a five year mission of trawling record shops, antique markets and online auction houses, to seek out the early seventies obscurity that is Head Hands and Feet - Warming Up The Band I finally managed to get my ol' mitts on a copy recently.
I've been trying to track down 'Warming', since discovering it through the excellent Old Grey Whistle Test DVDs. Thanks to a tip off from Ben Soundhog, I pipped a copy on ebay. And what a snip too, £4.99 instead of the Collectors Guidebook value - £25 (although I could've grabbed the demo disc version, with a deliciously diff' Island label for an extra 50p half an hour later).
So what better way to celebrate my first vinyl rip, than by uplumping this tricky-to-track nugget in the blog...
Head Hands and Feet - Warming Up The Band
It's A Pop Quiz - HHF's bass player is better known as one half of a seventies/eighties light entertainment duo - but who is he? You'll hear him at the tail end of the verses on the 'woah mama' section..
You can lend an ear to Don Everley's refit of Warming Up The Band here...

Funky Friday - Watching The Detectives (UK)
While sprouting from tot-to-teen during the seventies, I was a terror for TV Detectives - both the US variety covered (here), and the Brit-Cop shows that employed an almost off-the-peg parade of villainy..
Rough stuff street toughs
Hi-Tech International Terrorism
Corrupt Senior Civil Servants
Crooked Aristocrats in country houses and/or golf clubs (usually Stoke Park - a Goldfinger location)
I've still got my pick 'n 'mix library of original crimebusting Annuals stored in the loft, collecting together - The Persuaders,The Protectors,The Professionals, The Sweeney (surely The Sweeney were a bit too rough and ready for an Annual readers catchment audience) and The New Avengers..
Laurie Johnson's New Avengers (a flared and swishy refit of his sixties original), is surely the template tune for almost every Acid Jazz track, and gets worked over here by Southend's very own Snowboy...
Snowboy - The New Avengers Theme
Another Laurie Johnson anthem, and perhaps the greatest car-crashing-glass-smashing action theme ever.. - shouldn't Lewis Collins really have been the follow-on-Bond from Roger Moore?
The Professionals
Finally, can you decode this mystery title tune - and work out which show it's from??
