12 December 2015: RABM festivals in US & UK

First off: thanks to everyone who decided to join this blog as a contributor after Hayduke has left. Looks like I shouldn't be afraid for the future of the blog any more... although let's wait until the end of the year and then see.

Second: the Haglaz Fest III has just ended, but it isn't the only RABM-friendly fest to be held in 2015. On 12th of December, the Black Metal Alliance plans to release the 3rd compilation in the Crushing Intolerance series of anti-NSBM samplers. The release party is planned to be held in the Borg Ward (Milwakee, WI). The lineup consists of bands that I never heard of before, but that's what is good about the BMA - their compilations help to discover a lot of obscure new acts:

Falter MKE - (WI)
Hardcore/Grindcore

Ashbringer - (MN)

Autumnal Equinox open air: 22th of September

The same people that organized I & II Discomfort announce a new RABM-related open air festival for 22th of September. The event will take place in the vicinity of Moscow (the location will be specified later), and will be dedicated to the celebration of Autumnal Equinox. Expected line-up:

    • Fatum (metal punk, stenchcore / Moscow region)
    • Axidance (epic crust, black metal / Moscow-Tver-Ivanovo)
    • Kora (atmospheric black metal / Moscow)
    • Nimrud (melancholic post-metal / Moscow)
    • АНЮТИНЫ ГЛАНДЫ (sludge-doom-black-whatever metal, SPb)
    • Омут (one-man-band, depressive black metal, dark ambient / Ivanovo)
    • Diswarp (d-beat punk / Ryazan)
    • Vargtimmen (atmospheric black metal / Moscow)
    • Acid Vicious (Anti-Cimex worship / SPb)
    • Distonn (breakcore / SPb)
event page

Well, looks like we've finally got something to be proud of - in the 3 years we've built a sizable RABM-friendly community that's capable for organizing gigs on more or less regular basis (at least in Moscow and SPb). The general situation in the country is quite bad, though. Right now I'm way too tired, but tomorrow I'll try to shed more light on what's currently happening here (the consequences of PR trial, etc.)

25 August 2012: Karelian Plague Fest

Despite all the political shit that's currently going on, Russian underground scene is still alive and well, and a big Petrozavodsk-based festival "Karelian Plague" is announced for this weekend. There are several Old Roots New Shoots bands in the lineup (including Axidance, Led By Fear and The Last Three Winters), along with several other projects that's worth seeing live: Life Is Your Death (dark hardcore, PTZ), Voodoo Puppets (horror punk, PTZ), Warta (neocrust, SPb), Nimrud (melancholic post-metal, Moscow), Omega SuperStars (satanic hardcore, PTZ), Minaret (excellent blackened powerviolence/screamo from Moscow, highly recommended to check out!), and many others.

Kalendae - live set (from "Evenings of Forests and Sorrow")

The 3rd event in the series of "Evenings of Forests and Sorrow" will take place in SPb on 19th of October. Line-up:

  1. Kalendae (atmospheric black metal\ post-)
  2. ... и возвел их на гору (ambient)
  3. Gray Bastion (death/doom metal)
  4. Virosa (post-metal)

info

Two tracks from the first live show of Kalendae (not even a demo, just a live recording; the upcoming demo may sound different. I'm putting it here only to give you an idea of what kind of music they're playing):

26.09.2011, St.Petersburg - "An Evening of Forests and Sorrow", pt.2

One more event organized by our community - this time not quite RABM-themed, but there will be at least one band associated with RABM scene. The event will took place tomorrow in St.Petersburg, and it's called "Вечер лесов и грусти, vol.2" (which can be roughly translated as "An Evening of Forests and Sorrow/Sadness"). Line-up:

  1. У меня всё хорошо, очень даже (drone doom, shoegaze, sludge)
  2. Kalendae (atmospheric black metal/post-BM)
  3. Not My Murder (sludge/metal)
  4. Inter Arbores (ambient doom)

last.fm page / vkontakte

It's the second event in the line of "Evenings of Forests and Sorrow" - the first one took place at the same club in SPb month ago. The lineup consisted of Beauty Of Sirin (blackgaze) and Kalendae. Kora were also invited, but couldn't perform because one of their members was seriously injured.

This time the lineup consists mostly of sludge/doom metal and drone bands, but I hope EoF&S #3 will be more BM-oriented. None of these bands have released anything yet, but Kalendae are about to release a 2-track demo very soon. I've already heard their track called "Qliphoth", and it sounds very promising. BTW, they're members of "Old Roots New Shoots" association, along with such bands as Axidance and Kora (and their side projects: Our Last Rain, Дно, 66°33’39). The bands of O.R.N.S. have a lot in common with Cascadian BM bands, so I hope we'll see something comparable to Cascadian BM scene on post-Soviet space very soon.

    Autumn Discomfort Fest II

So, the 2nd event in the line of Discomfort festivals is going on right now near Moscow! Just like the 1st Discomfort Fest, it's organized by the members of our RABM community. Line-up:

    Moscow heretics:

    • Kora (atmospheric black metal/RABM)
    • AxidancE (neocrust (early), blackened crust/RABM (now))
    • Fatum (stenchcore/blackened crust)
    • Emancipation (old school crust)
    • Nimrud (post-metal)
    • Mutagen (hardcore punk)
    • Virulent Mass (hardcore/crust)
    • ConVince (d-beat/neocrust)
    • The Zavod (oi)
    • еГОр (psychedelic punk, cover band)
    • DJ Pizdec (electro-folk)
    • Fucking Paralytics (mystical noise)

    Guests from SPb:

    • DJ Distonn (breakcore; samples from Wolfbrigade, Skitsystem etc.)
    • Krivda (raw black metal/crust/grindcore)
    • Откаты (raw black metal/sludge)
    • Adrianocelentano (booze d-beat)
    • Distündrum ("ravepunk")
    • Acid Vicious ("ravepunk")

    event page on last.fm

As you can see, the lineup is big and diverse: there are RABM bands (sadly, not many - but they're headliners of the whole event), crusties, classic punks (including relatively well-known bands like Mutagen), and performers of extreme electronic music - both from Moscow and SPB. Finally, not only Colombians can have their own red&anarcho metal festivals ;) Good to see our RABM community grown so big and active within less than two years. If only our political situation would improve such fast...

(btw, not so long ago M.Verbitsky wrote an article which pretty much summarizes my own disappointment in politics and society. I'll translate it at least partly, if I'd have some free time tomorrow...)

P.S. Kudos to the designers of that flyer - it's the first time I see a punk or metal show flyer made in khokhloma style!

Russian Discomfort Fest (All Night Hell) - 4 June 2011

Another crust/RABM event by the same people who organized Black Monday in Moscow. Line-up:

    • Fatum (stenchcore, blackened crust)
    • Crucified By The Sun (RABM, True Pagan-Black Kvlt)
    • Drunken Fairy Tales (Moscow celtic punk)
    • Repression Attack (stenchcore/crust metal)
    • Nimrud (post metal)
    • Tender Branson (punk/hardcore)
    • Social Zero (fastcore/pv)
    • Yeltsin Youth (powerviolence)
    • Asthma (crust punk)
    • Егор (psychedelic punk, cover band)
    • The Завод (oi/streetpunk, not to be confused with Заводь)
    • Stillborn (metalcore)
    • Fucking Paralytics (mystical noise)
    • Virulent Mass (hardcore)
    • Unkind Revolt (streetpunk (early), neocrust (later))

    More info on last.fm

Good to see our RABM community becoming more and more active. Not sure if we'd have audience big enough for a similar gig in any major city other than Moscow, but there's hope for such a gig in St.Petersburg this summer.

Black Monday in Moscow - Fatum, Axidance, Kora, XY, Virulent Mass, Katalonia

BTW, only 12 hours left until the beginning of a first RABM-themed gig in Moscow! Most of participating bands aren't black metal, but it's organized by our RABM community:

    Line-up:

I know nothing about Virulent Mass and Katalonia, but looks like they're playing anarcho-punk/hardcore. More info about the event...
