Pigs in a blanket Lightsabers

Friday, May 4, 2012

Happy Star Wars Day!  May the 4th be with you!   Today I wanted to share with you yet another child friendly  Star Wars dinner.  Basically this is pigs in a blanket all wrapped up and then painted with a colored egg wash.  My boys were very excited to eat this and yes, I had to tell them more than once to not play with their dinner.  (as they were trying to fight with their "lightsabers" at the table.)

Ingredients:
tube of crescent rolls*
4 hot dogs
cheese slices, optional
1 egg, beaten
black, red, and blue food coloring

*each tube will make 4 hot dogs, so multiply this as needed.  For every tube you use, beat another egg so you have enough egg wash

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Unroll the crescent rolls into 4 rectangles.  You will need to pinch together the perforations.

Place cheese slices, if desired in the middle, and then place a whole hot dog in the middle.

Roll up the ends over the ends of the hot dog, and then roll it lengthwise to entirely cover the hot dog.  gently squeeze one top to look more pointy to be the tip of your lightsaber.

Place hot dogs on a parchment lined baking pan.  Make sure everything is pinched together tightly or else cheese will ooze out of your lightsabers.  (or solve that problem by not using cheese!)
Beat your egg into a bowl and add 1 tsp of water to it.  Divide into 2 bowls (3 if you're doing 3 colors and you may need another egg).  Add your food coloring to the egg wash and beat it so that there is no yellow remaining.  I did black for the lightsaber handle and red for the lightsaber.  But it would be easy to add a little blue to make a green lightsaber (you know, yellow + blue= green)
With a clean pastry brush or even a clean paint brush (used only for kitchen purposes), paint your lightsabers.  I would suggest also painting them again half way through cooking just so that the color is covering all of the dough.
Bake for 20 minutes or until the crust is all the way cooked through.  (it is kind of hard to tell because you won't see the golden brown)

Tie Fighter treats

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Here is a quick after school snack for your Star Wars fans.  Tie Fighter treats and Aunt Bouru's blue milk.  I can't claim this idea as I saw it earlier on the internet.  But it's so simple I thought I'd share it with you.  Yes, I know I'm a bit geeky, but it sure is fun to play with your food.

Ingredients:
graham crackers
large marshmallows
Peanut butter, or Nutella (or something that could glue it together)

milk
drop of blue food coloring

Directions:
Put PB or Nutella on each end of the marshmallow and stick it to the graham crackers.  Turn on its side and voila, you have a Tie Fighter!

Mix milk and blue food coloring together.

Eat right away and watch your Star Wars fan smile and think that you're the greatest mom ever!

General Grievous Pizza

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

May is here and with it comes green trees and flowers.  It is one of my most favorite times of the year.  And around my home it also is the time to celebrate a rather important fun day.   Yes, Star Wars Day is upon us.  May 4th has been declared Star Wars Day ("May the fourth be with you!")  If you think I'm joking, please just go Google it and you'll see that there are plenty of fellow Star Wars geeks like myself.  So, to start us off this week, I present General Grievous pizza.  My boys absolutely loved this.  It was super easy to do as well.

 Ingredients:

Pizza dough (homemade or store bought)
mozzarella cheese, shredded
pizza sauce
black olives, sliced
(ignore the cheddar cheese slice in this picture.  It's not needed)
a picture of General Grievous to help you if necessary

Directions:
Roll out pizza dough into an oval shape.  Make a couple small slices on the top of the oval and the bottom.  The bottom needs to be more squared off for General Grievous' mouth.
Now, slightly open up the slices so that when they bake, they won't be touching.
Cover with pizza sauce (or spaghetti sauce in my case)
Place extra pizza sauce in two eye shapes where his eyes are going to be.  Surround the pizza sauce eyes with black olives.  Cover mozzarella cheese all over (except the eyes).  Place your sliced olives for the remaining decor above his eyes and for his mouth slits.
Bake in a 425 degree oven for about 15 minutes or until the crust is baked golden to your liking (less for soft, longer for crunchy).

For even more fun, serve Han Solo trapped in Jello-nite.(get it? 'carbonite' 'jello-nite'.  OK, I'm a geek)  Just make some jello according to the package.  Add a little black food coloring to get it more a darker color.  Place in the refrigerator just long enough so it's not liquidy.  Place a clean Han Solo in the middle with his hands sticking up out of the Jello.  Finish in the refrigerator until solid.
Have fun and May the force be with you!
