Time flies

Olisikohan aika taas herätellä tätä blogia ja harrastusta henkiin. Tosin miniasioita en ole unohtanut vaikka blogipostauksia ei ole tullut vuosiin. Aina välillä olen jotain pientä näperrellyt ja hankintoja tehnyt. Ehkä se on tämä syksy, joka taas antoi kimmokkeen kirjoitteluunkin.

Tässä postauksessa esittelen teille matkamuistoja! Juuri niitä pieniä ja halpoja krääsäesineitä, jotka ovat aivan täydellisiä aarteita miniatyyriharrastajalle. Ne eivät vie suurta tilaa matkalaukusta, ja toimivat tarkoituksessaan, eli muistona mukavasta reissusta tai tuliaisena rakkailta ihmisiltä.

Perhaps it is time to revive this blog and hobby of mine again. Well, I have not forgotten all things mini, even though it's been years since the last post. Every now and then I have done something small and purchased an item or two. Maybe it's this autumn, giving me inspiration to write posts.

This story is about souvenirs! And to be specific, exactly those small, cheap, even tacky trinkets, which are just perfect for miniature hobbyist. They don't take too much space in the luggage and still serve their purpose as a reminder of a nice trip, or a souvenir from people you love.

These are old. From my class' fieldtrip to Kos, Greek, when I was 15.

Maybe I'll add some shading here and there. I don't know the story behind this statue.

This thimble is from Portugal and my spouse's mother gave it to me. 

It makes a very pretty flower pot.

And here's a creature from Barcelona. The original piece of art is located 

at Park Güell, which was designed by Antoni Gaudi. This too, is from my 

brother and his girlfriend, and yes, they travel often!

These tiny glass animals I bought from Riga, Latvia.

This brave Bavarian knight was found on our road trip to Munich and Austria. 

If I remember correct, I bought it somewhere near the Castle Neuschwanstein.

And last but not least, a gift from my dear niece. This is actually bought 

from Finland, but they live so far away from us, and we see so rarely, 

that it kind of feels like abroad..

Noin. Tuntuipa mukavalta puuhata blogia pitkästä aikaa. Jospa tämä taas tästä. Pimenevinä syysiltoina on mukava käpertyä kotiin tekemään pieniä asioita, vaikkapa teekupposen ja spotifyn lempisoittolistan kera. Mukavaa alkavaa syksyä kaikille ketkä tätä vielä jaksaa lukea!

There! It did feel nice to blog after a long time. I hope to come back again. It's so nice to hide in our home these ever darkening autumn nights, to make small things, have a cup of tea and listen to my favorite spotify play list. I wish a colorful autumn to all those who are still reading stories from Rotting Roof!

Hei taas kaikille! Minulla on kesäloma, ja sen myötä paljon aikaa. Silti tuntuu siltä etten saa mitään aikaiseksi. No ehkä lomalla kuuluukin lomailla.. Jotain olen kuitenkin tehnyt. Tein J:n äidille pikkiriikkisen huoneen vanhasta avainkaapista. Ajatuksena oli sisustaa kaappia vain sen verran että siitä on helppo jatkaa omanlaisensa tekemistä, mikäli haluaa. Oli hauska tehdä vähän pienempää projektia välillä. On se vaan niin erilaista verrattuna isomman nukkiksen tekoon. Jotenkin vapaampaa..

Hello everybody! I'm enjoying my summer holiday, and I have plenty of time. Still I can't get anything done. Well, maybe that's just what the holiday is for... But I have done something. A little room for J's mother, from an old key box I found from the flea market. The idea was to decorate the room just enough so it would be easy to continue from there. She can decide if she wants to paint or put wallpaper on it etc. I liked this smaller project for a change. There's a difference compared to a bigger dollhouse. This was kind of more free..

I made the bag from leather

Juhlin toukokuussa kolmikymppisiäni, ja sain ystäviltäni lahjakortin Pikkuruiseen Puotiin. Ostin sieltä alla olevan Reutterin tiskialtaan. Ilman lahjakorttia en olisi varmaan koskaan raaskinut ostaa kapistusta. Nyt se muistuttaa Rotting Roofin keittiössä minua ihanista ystävistäni!

I turned 30 in May, and my friends gave me a gift card to a local shop which sells dollhouse stuff. I bought the Reutter sink from there. I probably would never have dared to buy it without the gift card. Now it stands in Rotting Roof's kitchen, reminding me of my lovely friends!

Enää ei tarvitse kellariinkaan kiivetä köyttä pitkin. Haluaisin tehdä portaiden alle jonkun karmivan mörön kurottelemaan. Lonkerotkin voisivat olla hienoja.. Aika näyttää.

There's no need to climb a rope to the cellar anymore. I want to make something scary under the stairs. A boogieman. Tentacles would be cool too. Time will tell.

Alla joitain fimo-kokeiluja. Kylpyankasta tuli kiva, mutta kuvia en siitä osannut ottaa. Kala kaipaisi vielä vähän maalailua.

It's been a while..

Onpa taas vierähtänyt aikaa viime kerrasta! Johtuen ehkä siitä, että minulla alkoi koulu, joka on näin alkuun vienyt energiat harrastaa yhtään mitään. Mutta jospa tämä tästä.. Aloitin elokuussa käsityömuotoilijan opinnot ammattiopistossa. Minusta tulee siis artesaani ja päämateriaaleina ovat kivi ja metalli! Tähän asti olen tykännyt hurjan paljon! Odotan innolla että pääsemme oikeasti tekemään asioita, kunhan kaikista alkuhässäköistä päästään ohi.. Nukkisjuttuja on kyllä ollut ikävä, ja aina aika ajoin olen vilkuillut taloa ohikulkiessani, mietien että se kaipaisi suursiivousta! Kumma miten paljon pölyä tuollainen esine pystyy keräämään!!

It's been a while since last time. That's mainly because my school started and it's been stealing all my energies  for anything else. But it will get better! I began my studies in August, and in three years I will be an artisan in handicraft design and production. Our main materials are metal and stone!! So far I've liked it massively and I can't wait to start really doing things there! I've really missed RottingRoof, and reading other peoples wonderful blogs! I've got some catching up to do.. Every time I've walked by the house it's been crying to be cleaned.. I wonder how an object like that can gather so much dust on it..

Tässä on siskontyttöni lahjoittama helmi muutettuna ylellisyystarvikkeeksi.

This is the bead my niece gave me,
transformed to a luxury item.

Ostin puuvalmiin takkamanttelin kyllästyttyäni omaan jahkailuuni. Hyvä että ostin, sillä projekti ei varmaan olisi muuten edennyt. Tiilitaustan tein ilmakuivuvasta massasta ja kivipohjan kaiversin konepahvista. Netistä ostamani sähköinen takkahiillos näyttää hieman kököltä kun se ei ole päällä. Asialle voisi varmaan tehdä jotain jos uskaltaisi hieman penkoa hiillosta.

I bought an unfinished mantelpiece after getting tired of  being so indecisive about the fireplace. And I am glad that I did since otherwise this project would not have gone forward. The brick wall is made of air dry clay, and I carved the stone base on thick cardboard. The electrified embers look somehow awkward when   switched off. I could probably do something about it if I'd dare to poke the embers.

Itselleni shakinpeluun salat ovat vielä hieman hämärän peitossa, mutta Rotting Roofin väelle shakki on yksi vakioajanvietteistä. Siispä pelille piti pyhittää oma pöytä. Vielä pitäisi tehdä pelijakkarat ja keksiä sijoituspaikka koko setille. Ärsyttää kun pöytä näyttää joka kuvassa johonkin suuntaan vinolta. Shakkilaudan ja nappulat ostin paikallisesta sisustustavaraliikkeestä mistä löytyy myös kohtuullinen valikoima nukkekotitavaraa. Kauppa sijaitsee Joensuun keskustassa ja on nimeltään Pikkuruinen Puoti. Suosittelen!

I'm not much of a chess player, but in Rotting Roof chess is among the favorite pastimes. So I made them a table for their chess board. To be a complete set, it still needs a couple of stools and a permanent place in the house. I found the chessboard from a local boutique.

Tuunailin valmishuonekaluja rujommiksi hiomapaperin ja maalin avulla. Pöytään tein uudet laatikot, kun alkuperäisiä esitti puupalikat... Vielä pitäisi ruhjoa kirjaston rulokirjoituspöytä samaan tyyliin. Mielestäni tuo kiiltävä punainen pinta ei oikein sovi talon tunnelmaan.

These two pieces needed some destroying, so I sandpapered them and threw some paint on. And since that table's idea of a drawer was a wooden block, I made new drawers. I still need to "renew" the writing desk in the library. It looks too new, red and shiny to fit in this house.

Nyt, vihdoinkin, pääsen esittelemään teille ruokasalin taulun. Yllä olevan jiiriboxin ähräsin kasaan jotta pääsin tekemään taululle kehykset. Pidän taulusta kovasti, se tuo mukavan aavemaista tunnelmaa ruokasaliin. Mutta voi elämä miten vaikeaa sen kuvaaminen oli!! Ja vieläkään se ei kuvissa näytä samalta kuin luonnossa. Mutta eikös taide pidäkin kokea omin silmin jokatapauksessa..? En osannut päättää mitkä kuvat jätän postaukseen, niin jätin sitten kaikki. Klikkaa ihmeessä kuvia niin näet ne isompana! And now I get to show you the new painting! I had to make a miter box first so I could have the painting framed. I like it a lot. I brings nice eerie ambiance in the room. But oh boy, it was difficult to photograph. And still it doesn't look just like it looks in real. Art needs to be experienced with your own eyes, doesn't it? I had hard time deciding which photos to choose, so I chose them all. Pleace click the pictures to see them bigger! The name of the painting is Mother's chest of drawers. I had some difficulties translating the name.. First I was going to go with Mother's Drawers, but I found out that 'drawers' mean long underpants.. Is that true? And Mother's Chest does not sound right either. English is fun! Ok, enough of that. Spring Ahead! ..or Head on A Spring..

Otsikon sanaleikille löytyy selitys tuonnempana.. Mutta sitä ennen.. Leikkelin ohuen, kylkiäisenä tulleen hiirimaton kappaleiksi ja liimailin kasaan silinterin luurangolle. Helppoa ja nopeaa! Ja olen oikein tyytyväinen lopputulemaan. Materiaali on siitä mukavaa, että se on kuminen ja joustaa hiukan, pysyen täten hyvin ukkelin päässä. Liimasin hattuun pätkän satiininauhaa koristeeksi. Hiirimatosta riittäää useammankin hatun tarpeiksi, ja koristenauhan väriä vaihtamalla saa hatun joka tilaisuuteen..

Later on, there will be an explanation for the word play of the headline.. But before that.. I cut a freebie mouse pad in pieces and made a top hat. Quick and easy! And I'm very satisfied with the result. This material is rubbery and slightly flexible, therefore it stays well on his head. I glued some ribbon as a decoration on the hat. There's plenty more left of that mouse pad, and just by changing the color of the ribbon I can make a hat for every occasion..

Vietin taannoin viikon koiranhoitajana siskoni luona. Heidän talouteensa muutti pieni silkkiterrieri-vauva joka kaipasi kaitsemista ensimmäisten päivien ajan siskoni käydessä töissä. Samalla sain myös viettää aikaa rakkaan kohta seitsenvuotiaan siskontyttöni kanssa! Saimme pari päivää kulumaan vauhdilla taikataikinan parissa, ja siskontyttöni teki minulle nukkekotiin kynttilän ja banaanin!! Siskoni oli myös ahkeroinut lisää lämmikettä Rotting Roofin asukkaille, tällä kertaa hieman pienemmässä koossa ja valkoisena. Suuret kiitokset molemmille näistä ihanuuksista, muistelen teitä joka kerta kun nämä tavarat osuvat silmiini talossa..

Some time ago I spent a week at my sister's home. She bought a super cute silky terrier-puppy and I was the dogsitter while my sister was working. I also got to spend some time with my soon to be seven year old niece, who is very dear to me. We spent couple of days with a big pot of salt-dough, and my niece made a banana and a candle from it, for me!! My sister had also knitted some warm clothing for the skeleton, this time in white, and a bit smaller sized. I'm so thankful for these tiny objects, and every time I see them in the house, I remember my sister and her beautiful daughter..

Siskoni kotikaupungista löytyy aivan ihana nukkekoti- ja lelukauppa, jossa on pakko käydä törsäämässä rahaa aina kun mahdollista! Tällä kertaa ostin sieltä mm. ompelukoneen, kahvisetin ja metalliset keittiövälineet telineen kera.

Near my sister's home there is a lovely shop, where they sell old toys and dollhouse-stuff, and I'm forced to spend some money there when ever I have the opportunity! This time I bought a sewing machine, a coffee set and some kitchenware with a rack, among other things.

Olen aivan ihmeissäni siitä miten moni ihminen on jo osallistunut nukkekotini tekoon! Allaolevassa kuvassa on joitakin tavaroita joita avopuolisoni äiti oli kerännyt minua varten! (Lukuun ottamatta pinkkiä muovisydäntä, sen sain siskontytöltäni lahjaksi ja lupasin tehdä siitä parfyymipullon) Uskomatonta miten toisen roska voi olla toiselle mitä ihanin lahja, samalla nivoutuen muistoksi muiden joukkoon. Aivan kuin oikeassakin kodissa, tavarat nukkekodissa saavat merkityksiä ja ovat muistutuksia rakkaista ihmisistä.  

I am totally amazed over the fact that there's so many people wanting to participate in my dollhouse! The picture below shows some stuff my boyfriend's mother had collected for me! (Apart from the pink plastic heart, my niece gave it to me and I promised to make a perfume bottle from it) It's amazing how someone's thrash can be the most appreciated gift for somebody else, becoming a treasured memory among others. Just like in a real home, things in the dollhouse can possess meaning, and can be memories of the important people in your life.

Ja nyt pääsemme siihen otsikon sanaleikkiin.. Tämä projekti pysyy keskeneräisenä kunnes keksin millaisen pään teen vieteriukolle. Laatikko on paksua pahvia, saranana maalarinteippiä, ja jousi on mustekynästä. Päällystin laatikon nahkaa muistuttavalla paperilla.

And now we get to the wordplay in the headline.. This project will remain unfinished until I'm able to decide what kind of a head is Jack going to get. The box is made of thick cardboard, hinge is tape and the spring is from a dried out fountain pen. I found some leather resembling paper to cover the box with.

 Ja lopuksi jotain odotettavaa.. Ostin Rotting Roofin ruokasalin seinälle aivan oikean taideteoksen aivan oikealta taiteilijalta. Työ on vielä kehyksiä vailla, ja takkakin puuttuu ruokasalista, joten joudumme hetken odottelemaan taulun paljastamista.. En malttaisi itsekään oikein odottaa!

And then there is a teaser for all of us. I bought a real painting from a real artist, to be hanged on the dining room's wall. It still needs to be framed, and I need to do the fireplace in the dining room first. This means we will have to wait a bit for the revealing of the painting. I couldn't wait for myself!
