GFTW Tournament Game 2: White Scars vs Grey Knights

Game 2 of the Greetings From the Warp tournament saw my White Scars Space Marines taking on Ken and his Grey Knights army.

The mission for game 2 was the Kill Confirmed Maelstrom of War mission with Hammer and Anvil deployment. This was the mission I was most worried about of the three. My army does well at maelstrom games, but my MSU style army can give up a lot of kill points.

My army consisted of:
Brigade Detachment
Captain on Bike- Thunder Hammer, The Shield Eternal, Twin Boltgun, Iron Resolve Warlord Trait (C1)
Captain with Jump Pack- Lightning Claw, Combi-Melta (C2)
Librarian with Jump Pack- Force Stave, Boltgun, Null Zone, Psychic Fortress (L2)
Lieutenant with Jump Pack- Power Axe, Master-Crafted Boltgun, Bolt Pistol (L1)
5 Scouts- Boltguns (S1)
5 Scouts- Boltguns, Sergeant has Bolt Pistol and Combat Knife (S2)
5 Scouts- Bolt Pistols and Combat Knives (S3)
5 Tactical Marines- Bolters, Heavy Bolter (TS1)
5 Tactical Marines- Bolters, Heavy Bolter (TS2)

The Biker Captain was my warlord.

Ken's army consisted of:
Battalion Detachment
Kaldor Draigo (D)
Grandmaster in Dreadknight- Gatling Psilencer, Heavy Psycannon, Greathammer, Personal Teleporter (G)
5 Strike Squad- Storm Bolters, Psylencer (SS1)
5 Strike Squad- Storm Bolters, Psylencer (SS2)
5 Strike Squad- Storm Bolters, Psylencer (SS3)

Outrider Detachment
Brother Captain- Hammer, Psycannon (BC)
5 Inceptor Squad- Justicar with Hammer, Psilencer (I)
5 Inceptor Squad- Justicar with Hammer, Psilencer (I2)
10 Inceptor Squad- 2 Psilencers (I3)
Stormraven Gunship- Twin Lascannon, Twin Multi-melta, 2 Hurricane Bolters, 2 Stormstrike Missiles (SR)
Apothecary (A)

I had yet to face the Grey Knights since the codex was released. My experiences with the in the index were not great, struggling against the army with my Deathwatch. The Stormraven is still a tough unit to take down. Hopefully, I would have some good firepower to take it out quickly.

North West Open 2017: Game 4- Deathwatch vs Grey Knights

Game one of day two of the North West Open tournament would see my Deathwatch facing off against Daniel's Grey Knights army.

The mission for game 4 was ITC scenario 6- Secure and control. The eternal war mission consisted of two objectives, one in each of our deployment zones.
There were also four other maelstrom objectives; two labelled objective 1 and two labelled objective 2. The maelstrom table for this mission was:
  1. Hold Maelstrom objective 1
  2. Hold Maelstrom objective 2
  3. Destroy an enemy unit
  4. Destroy an enemy unit
  5. Have a unit at least partially within the enemy deployment zone (Behind Enemy Lines)
  6. Have at least 3 of your units and no enemy units at least partially within your own deployment zone (Hold the Line)
As with all the ITC missions, you generate 3 unique maelstrom objectives each turn by rolling on the table and choose the two you wish to try and achieve. If you roll up hold objectives 1 and 2, you can exchange it for holding three objectives for 3 maelstrom points. If you roll up destroy an enemy unit twice, you can exchange it for kill three enemy units for three points.
The tertiary objectives were First Blood, Linebreaker and Slay the Warlord. We would be using Spearhead assault deployment.

My Deathwatch army consisted of:
Battalion Detachment
Watch Master (W)
Watch Captain- Jump Pack, Pair Lightning Claws (W)
Kill Team 1- 5 Veterans, Vanguard Veteran with Pair Lightning Claws, 3 Frag Cannons, Storm Shield. (KT1)

Kill Team 3- 5 Veterans, 2 Missile Launchers, 3 Stalker Boltguns (KT3)
Kill Team 4- 5 Veterans, Meltagun, 3 combi-Meltas (KT4)
Kill Team 5- 5 Veterans, 2 Frag Cannons (KT5)
Rhino (R)
Drop Pod- Storm Bolter (DP)
6 Vanguard Veterans- 2 Pairs Lightning Claws, Power Sword and Bolt Pistol, 3 with Bolt Pistols and Chainswords (VV1)

3 Deathwatch Bikers- two Power Swords (DB2)

6 Command Points

My Warlord was the Watch Master, who took the Tenacious Survivor warlord trait.

Caledonian Revolution 2016: Game 1- White Scars vs Tau/Grey Knights

Welcome to my first battle report from my games at the recent Caledonian Revolution tournament. The tournament was held at the North Western Gaming Centre down in Stockport and featured 75 players.

I decided to take my White Scars to the tournament and had been practising with my list for a few months with varying degrees of success, so was feeling ok about my chances in my games over the two days of the tournament. Ideally, I wanted to win at least 3 of the 5 games and finish in the top half of the rankings table.

Overall, I had a fantastic time at the tournament. I play 5 very challenging games over the two days against some great opponents. The guys organising the tournament were fantastic, all the games ran on time with plenty of time for each match, and everything was run efficiently and with good humour. A big thanks to all of my opponents and everyone I got chatting to over the weekend for making it such a fun event.

A big bonus for me was how many players over the weekend recognised my army from the blog and how many people said that they read and enjoyed my blog and battle reports. It's great to get that kind of feedback from people I haven't met before and really makes the effort that I put into the blog worth it. I also got a few compliments on my army, which was great given the very high standards of painting you will see in the Armies on Display post. Over the weekend I got several comments along the lines of "it's so unusual to see a White Scars army actually painted up as White Scars", which made me chuckle.

I did not win any raffle prizes, but got a bargain of a sale. One of the winners decided he did not want to take his Betrayal at Calth prize with him on the flight, so I snapped it up for only £50! My resistance to starting that Emperor's Children 30K army is slowly diminishing as I type.

It was a really fun weekend and I got to meet some great new players and hopefully get a few new readers for the blog in my game opponents.

After a disastrous drive down the motorway on the Friday (more on this in a later post) and a lack of sleep on the Friday night (my hotel decided that 5 am was the perfect time to use the industrial dish washer located directly below my room), I got my army ready to see what table I would be playing on. I was due to play Matt and his Daemons in my first game, but he had to drop out of the tournament. I was informed later that he had actually won the last Caledonian Revolution, so I was not too upset about this.

My opponent for the first round turned out to be Sid with his Tau, Grey Knights and Assassins army. Things were already looking up, as Sid had only come in second at the last Revolution.........

My army consisted of:
Scarblade Strike Force
Hunting Force
Khan- Moondrakken (with CS)
Command Squad- Bikes, Apothecary, 4 grav guns, 4 storm shields, Banner of the Eagle (CS)
6 Bikers- 2 grav guns, sergeant with power axe and meltabombs (BS1)

Battle Report 63- 1500 pts Orks/Grey Knights vs Blood Angels/Daemons

This week's battle report was my Friday night practice game before Double Trouble where my Orks and Tobias' Grey Knights took on Pete's Blood Angels and Dan's Chaos Daemons.

We decided to play the first mission of Double Trouble, but some confusion regarding the rules meant that we had each player rolling for 3 maelstrom cards each turn rather than 3 per turn. The 6 maelstrom cards per turn, added to the fact we were rolling for them as we didn't have the cards meant a lot of note taking and re-rolls each turn (I am so glad that Alex supplies the Double Trouble cards for the tournament games!).

My army consisted of:

Battle Report 36- 1500 pts Orks vs Grey Knights

This week's battle report features my Ork army taking on Adam's Grey Knights. Adam was wanting to take on my Orks, so I thought they would saddle up once again to take on the Emperor's finest.

My Ork army consisted of:
Warboss- Power Claw, Shoota, Eavy Armour, Bosspole, Lucky Stick (with Meganobz)
Big Mek- Eavy Armour, Kustom Force Field (with Shoota Boyz)
20 Slugga Boyz- 2 Big Shootas, Nob with Power Claw and Bosspole (SB1)
20 Slugga Boyz- 2 Big Shootas, Nob with Power Claw and Bosspole (SB2)
30 Shoota Boyz- 3 Big Shootas, Nob with Power Claw and Bosspole (SH1)
15 Lootas (L)
12 Slugga Boyz- Nob with Power Claw and Bosspole (SH2)
Trukk- Big Shoota (T1)
4 Meganobz- Bosspole (M)
Trukk- Big Shoota (T2)
Dakkajet- 3 Supa Shootas (D)

I started with a Warboss and Big Mek. The Warboss is a hard hitter, able to plough through marines. The Big Mek took a Kustom Force Field to help protect the boyz from the Grey Knight's firepower. I then took three big mobs of boyz, enough to weather the firepower of the opposing army and still pack a punch in combat.
The Lootas were there to provide some serious firepower to the army. They can put out an incredible number of high strength shots when they eventually hit.

I took a unit of trukk boyz and a unit of Meganobz in a trukk to give my army some mobility and some hard-hitting power. The Meganobz were taken to provide a very tough unit for Adam's army, I was impressed with how tough Seb's Meganobz proved to be in a previous battle report, needing power claws to come close to denting them.

Finally, I finished the list with a Dakkajet. Apart from being an amazing model, this flyer can put out a lot of highly accurate firepower (at least for Orks).

My warlord trait was Might is Right, giving the Warboss +1S. Not too useful with a Power Claw armed Warboss.
