Yule Logged: Heathcliff, Christmas Incorperated, The Thanksgiving House, Hollidaysburg, Christmas on the Bayou, Carole's Christmas, Magic Christmas Shoes,, Three Wise Boys





Heathcliff - North Pole Cat (1985)

Back in the day, Heathcliff was aways that other cat comic strip/cartoon. I didn’t mind the strip but the toon was pretty bad, and this holiday installment is pretty annoying. Not awful but nothing I can recommend

Tropes include a malcontent elf and Santa’s workshop as a business where elves get fired and rehired.





Christmas Incorperated (2015)

Middling holiday corporate versus small-town romance. Not the worst thing I watched today. Never need to see it again.




The Thanksgiving House (2013)

Proof that Christmas isn’t the only holiday Hallmark can expoit with mediocre low budget romances.

Is it Hallmark? Yup

From the director of?  Motel Hell, From Beyond the Grave, The House Where Evil Dwells (All of which I would have rather watched)

Is it Christmastime? No, Thanksgiving

Did I finish it? Begrudgingly

Is it a good movie? Meh

Is it a good Thanksgiving Movie? Meh



Hollidaysburg (2014)

College friends reunite over Thanksgiving break.

A little edgier than I like my holiday entertainment but, I have to admit it’s pretty well made. For what it is, it’s good,  just not my cup of gravy.





Christmas on the Bayou (2019)

This one was worth it just for Ed Asner’s cajun Santa.  Maybe my favorite so far this year, though that bar is admittedly, pathetically low. A nice cast, a better than an average script, decent direction. Not a classic but a step in the right direction.




Carole's Christmas (2019)

One of the most competent David DeCocteau flicks I’ve ever watched part of (see Santa’s Summer House, DB Cooper vs Bigfoot, A Talking Cat! amongst too many others).

Jackee Harry is the Clarence to Kimberly Elise’s George Bailey but it’s a pretty dull life.





The Magic Christmas Shoes (2019)

So long as they’re not the ones from that damn song.

Actually, this was not at all good, but at least it didn’t make me cry. Or laugh. Or care at all. Or finish it.




Three Wise Boys (1963)

A wholesome short film about three young brothers who learn the true meaning of Christmas. Faith-based, it does take a low key anti-Santa stand so the younger set might not be the best audience, if that might be a problem.

Yule Logged: Turkey Drop, Ozzie and Harriet, Two and a Half Men, B.C. The First Thanksgiving, Accidental Family, Davey and Goliath,Still Standing





Turkey Drop (2019)

While I’m probably even less the target audience for a Freeform original than I am for Hallmark/Lifetime this was decidedly okay. I doubt I’ll ever watch it again but it effectively killed a couple of hours without making me want to poke my eyes out. So that’s nice.






Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet - Day After Thanksgiving (1952)

A solid holiday episode built around Thanksgiving leftovers.





Two and a Half Men  - Merry Thanksgiving  s1e10 (2003)

When watching 2 1/2 Men you have to try to separate the series from the Charlie Sheen drama baggage, though guest star Denise Richards makes that a bit trickier. But once you focus on the show, instead of the behind the scenes nonsense, it still isn’t very funny.






B.C. The First Thanksgiving (1973)

Back in my comic strip reading days I could take or leave B.C. but I never really warmed to their TV specials. This Thanksgiving one isn’t terrible but it isn’t good either. Plus, the whole B.C. thing makes doing a Thanksgiving special pretty much pointless.


Accidental Family - What is this Thanksgiving or a Nightmare (1967)

Pretty good Jerry Van Dyke led sitcom. Dysfunctional family stuff with a great supporting cast including Jim Backus. Of its time but very good.






Davey and Goliath - The Pilgrim Boy  (1960)

Vintage religious claymation version of the Thanksgiving Story. I remember watching this as a kid. It is whar it is.





Still Standing  - Still Thankful (2002)

Mark Addy’s dodgy American accent always bugged me but this was a decent sitcom. Usual dysfunctional family stuff.

Yule Logged: Thanksgiving - Charlie Brown, Garfield, Burns and Allen, Casper





A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)

A classic, obviously, but at this point I’ve seen it literally a hundred times and, to be candid, it’s the weakest of the Peanuts Big Three. If you’re still on 50 views or fewer it’s a must-see.




The Mayflower Voyagers (1988)

While I’ve seen the OG Peanuts Thanksgiving special many, many, many times, I’ve probably only seen this retelling of the Mayflower story a couple of dozen times so it actually played better this year. Recommended.





Garfield's Thanksgiving (1989)

When my kids were growing up this was probably their favorite Thanksgiving show and it still holds up okay.





The Burns and Allen Show -Thanksgiving (1951)

Don’t let the kinescope quality put you off, this is a classic sitcom and a solid Thanksgiving episode. I also recommend seeking out the duos holiday radio shows from the 30’s and 40’s - great stuff!




Casper the Friendly Ghost - Do or Diet (1953)

Similar to the Daffy Duck toon I reviewed earlier, this one finds our floaty friend trying to de-plump a turkey before the ax falls.

Yule Logged: Thanksgiving - New Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies, A Thanksgiving Tale, Pat Boone and Family, Q*bert





New Looney Tunes - No Thanks Giving (2019)

A wan imitation of the old school war of wits between Elmer Fudd and that wascally wabbit Bugs Bunny, but if you haven’t seen the original loony tunes then this will do.




Merrie Melodies - Daffy Duck - No Holiday for Drumsticks (1949)

No classic but real cel animation and gifted voice actors make all the difference. Daffy "befriends" a Thanksgiving turkey only to find himself the new main course.




A Thanksgiving Tale (1983)

The thing with anthropomorphizing in kid’s Thanksgiving specials is that you end up with some weird turkey-related dilemmas. In this tale of feuding animal gangs, from Newark, NJ,  the cats are holding a confused turkey hostage until T-Day to have as a main course while the dogs plot to save the turkey even though they were just waxing poetic about Turkey leftovers they were looking forward to (though not the leftovers of the bird the cats have got). It’s all very odd.

Some decent puppetry, some surprisingly contemporary-sounding, for 1983, songs and the script is better than the premise. I don’t consider it a holiday classic but it makes for a change from the relative handful of options usually available.





Pat Boone and Family  -  A Thanksgiving Special (1978)

John Byner, Bob Hope, and The Hudson Brothers guest in this holiday special from Pat and the Boone’s. And it’s awesome. Goofy, cheesy, wholesome and perfect. And I expect everyone else will hate it.


Best Thanksgiving Ever (2018)

No, it isn’t, not at all. Cheap comedy trying to work, I don’t know, maybe, an It’s Always Sunny vein.No thanks.





The Very First Thanksgiving (2017)

Short but sweet Scholastic / weston woods narrated children’s book.





Q*bert: Thanksgiving for the Memories (1983)

Odd little Thanksgiving episode of an odd little video game based Saturday morning cartoon. The Pilgrim’s story retold with Q*bert and co.. It is what it is.

One of my very favorite creators on Youtube. I’m a holiday traditionalist, had an ancestor at the first Thanksgiving and everything, so the Townsend’s crew’s historical cooking shows, and specifically their holiday shows, are amazing resources.


Down Home with the Neelys - Giving Thanks

Though the incessant upbeat banter started to grate it’s a decent set of basic recipes.

Cajun grilled Turkey looks good, but my family would mutiny if I switched up the holiday bird. I have done crawfish around Christmas before, I’ll have to think about it for this year.

Good Eats is legendary and this Thanksgiving re-visit is packed full of infotainment.

Yule Logged: Thanksgiving Cooking Shows Part one



Culinarily, at Casa Kringle, there’s a fair amount of crossover between Thanksgiving and various Christmastime meals - Turkey, stuffing, sprouts, a  couple of casseroles, cranberries  - so Thanksgiving cooking programs kinda do double duty.

I’m not a huge fan of holiday cooking competition shows as recipe inspiration - too much deconstruction, reinvention, expectation subversion so, while my wife watches them religiously, I don’t really pay them that much attention. That said I did watch a couple of Thanksgiving themed episodes of Guy's Grocery Games, and they were okay. Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge, on the other hand, I can do without.

Over the years I’ve transitioned from a Christopher Kimball super fan to a decidedly luke warm feeling but I have to admit the post-Kimball ATC is just so much blah to me. I pretty much tuned this Thanksgiving episode out a few minutes in. I sure the recipes are sound but…

Closed out my mini-binge with classic roast turkey for a crowd.
