Polish band Dom Zly have been together since the Polish autumn of 2016. The band have released a self-titled EP(it's a six song release!). The band's music is described as crust but there is much more at work on this EP than just crust punk.

The first proper song, "Bor" takes in and spits out a black metal influence with a bumblebees from hell guitar tone utilized during the song's faster moments. There's more of a post-metal meets angry crust punk feel when the band slow down mid-song. "Psy" looks towards both Discharge and post-metal.



Somewhere there is a d-beat purist shaking their first at Dom Zly for messing with what was pure. But we'll ignore the unwashed in their heavily studded leather jackets and just accept the fact that "Psy" is a damned good song. There's a sludgy underbelly to "Tramp" , which incorporates post-metal, crust punk and black and even death metal to come up with a glorious noise. The song "Dom Zly" begins as an angry sludgy blast before combining a lighter side with more atmospheric post-metal. The vocalists angry shouts betray the lighter part of the song but eventually he stops for breath and lets the light in for a while, but only to catch his breath to get angry once again. "W Noc" starts off with an ambient style introduction and the departs to a bleaker droning black metal direction where no sun can penetrate.



If you were wondering, Dom Zly roughly translates from Polish to English as “Bad House”. Whether or not they are bad, it's great that this six track release isn't being referred to as an album. Whilst there are only six tracks on this EP, there is definitely a lot to digest in one sitting as the band explore different territories of extreme music.

Police State - Mind Collapse

Pennsylvanian band Police State's mission statement is to shit on American politics. Instead of using billions of dollars and an odd hairpiece Police State are using a combination of crust, grind, powerviolence and d-beat to get their mission accomplished.

The listener is gently lulled in with the opening "intro" before getting beaten with the less than a minute d-beat blasts of "Consumed" and "Oath". "Pure Filth" is double the length of these two tracks and has a crustier texture. "Cease To Exist is triple the length and grinds the ear with a metallic lean.

While the anger is ever-present throughout the twenty minutes of "Mind Collapse", there's not a lot to draw a listener back.

Miserable Failure "Hope"

The grindcore rule book states that songs by bands that claim genre should be short angry bursts that rely on super fast blazing riffs and blast beats.  The myths surrounding this rulebook include that it was written for people with short attention spans so it can be read in less time than Napalm Death's "You Suffer" and that it was originally printed with a lump of black coal then photocopied and handed out at grind gigs on A5 paper.

Lost all semblance of my original train of thought; where was I again?  Oh, yeah.  I was writing a review of French grindcore band, Miserable Failure's "Hope".  It's fast and angry grind.  Four songs in less than four minutes.  Balls jackhammered to the wall by a bullet train sum up this band's approach although they do slow down for a bit in "Goodbye and Good Riddance" to give a sample some breathing space.

Asilo - Geografias

 

Asilo are a four piece band from Argentina.  The band describe their music as crust doom. Asilo have opted out of the traditional four on the floor sound by eliminating the guitar and instead utilize two basses.   Their latest single "Geografias" is a taster for an upcoming album.    "Geografias" crawls slowly out from the gutter as sludgy crust with troll vocals then when the song hits about the  halfway point oppressive discordant drone beats the listener into submission and the comes out of a cocoon as doom with haunting spoken vocals.  The lyrics to the song are all in the band's native language.

What really piqued my interest in this release was the cover of "Wardance" because it is one of my favorite Killing Joke songs.  As with all cover versions, there is the fear that the band completely ruin the song or by simply playing it straight add absolutely nothing but Asilo add a dense layer of mouldy crust to the tune.  This would be my pick out of the two tracks however it's not going to end up on their upcoming album.  The band's music reminds me of those old ads that were used to advertise death metal that stated, "Some music was meant to stay underground".   This isn't music for the faint-hearted.   However if you're looking for a combination of crust, doom and sludge, this release is well worth a look but don't just take my word for it, play the single for yourself at their Bandcamp page.

  The fact that they have a picture of Edith Piaf on their band shirt is a little confusing.
