Le Mont St. Michel

July 14th is a French Holiday,  La Fete National,  or Bastille Day as it is referred to in English speaking countries.   In honor  of the holiday,  perhaps it is a good time to show you a few photos of  Le Mont St. Michel, which were taken last year.  I will not go into it's long and storied history,  but will show  just a few of the  pictures of the trek
 up to the Abbey.
The first picture is  a scan of a picture postcard. As much fun as it would have been to be in a helicopter taking this picture,
it is not mine.

Inside the walls of the Mont are rows of shops, hotels,  cafes and chapels.  It was very crowded the day we visited as it was on yet another French holiday.

There is a causeway, but some choose to hike to the Mont  through the mud  flats during the low tide.

It's a wonderful place to see!  We were fortunate to have a crisp clear (although quite nippy) day. Hoping you enjoyed
the little tour!

St Malo, France

St. Malo , France, an old walled city on the Brittany Coast,  has so much to offer:
 A lovely harbor,

 Stunning homes,

Beaches

Ramparts encircling the old city and the old city within the walls.

What is he pointing to?   The sea?   England?  The New World?

Or maybe to this cute little Bistro just inside the ramparts.

Actually the statue is that of the  swashbuckling corsair Robert Surcouf (hero of many daring 18-century raids on the British navy), eternally wagging an angry finger over the waves at England .

After walking the ramparts, we strolled through the Old City.

The  cathedral boasted beautiful stained glass.

A small square  was blooming  with color.

And a few were napping in the Sunshine!

Remembering

While we all love a Holiday,  especially one that falls with an extended weekend, giving us extra time to spend with family and friends, enjoying good food and  participating in fun activities, many have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day.
Remember,  Memorial Day is more than just another Holiday.
It is a day of  Remembrance for all men and women   who have  perished in Military Service to our Country.

~American Cemetary, Omaha Beach, Normandy France

A famous poem, written during World War I,
by a Canadian doctor describing the scene before him, is one of my favorite, and is a touching reminder  for this Holiday.

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

                          ~Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD

French Market

On our recent vacation, we happened upon
this little open-air fresh fruit and vegetable market in
Cherbourg, France.

Beautiful, the fruits and vegetables were rich in color,  but  also a bit  rich in price.  Priced in Euros  (at about $1.50 per Euro) , the strawberries are within pennies of $6.00 for 14 ounces.  The cantaloupes were in two sizes at about $4.50 for the smaller and $6.00 of the larger of the two.  The asparagus , about $6.00 per bunch.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend and a
Happy Pink Saturday.

Hugs, Honey
