Le Mont St. Michel

July 14th is a French Holiday,  La Fete National,  or Bastille Day as it is referred to in English speaking countries.   In honor  of the holiday,  perhaps it is a good time to show you a few photos of  Le Mont St. Michel, which were taken last year.  I will not go into it's long and storied history,  but will show  just a few of the  pictures of the trek
 up to the Abbey.
The first picture is  a scan of a picture postcard. As much fun as it would have been to be in a helicopter taking this picture,
it is not mine.

Inside the walls of the Mont are rows of shops, hotels,  cafes and chapels.  It was very crowded the day we visited as it was on yet another French holiday.

There is a causeway, but some choose to hike to the Mont  through the mud  flats during the low tide.

It's a wonderful place to see!  We were fortunate to have a crisp clear (although quite nippy) day. Hoping you enjoyed
the little tour!

Doldrums

I have a huge, overpowering case of the winter blahs,  the doldrums which is definded by the dictionary as a period of inactivity or a state of stagnation.

It’s not been a harsh Winter, but windy, dreary.  But I think it’s just me.  This time of the year, I always long to be somewhere tropical.  Someplace nice  where the Sun is Shinning, the Breezes are Warm and the Water is Lapping on the Beach.

Somewhere where the palms are swaying

Tahiti Wedding

Two years ago, for our  wedding anniversary, we treated ourselves a  14-day cruise from  Auckland to Sydney, with an extra week tacked on  for a side trip to the Great Barrier Reef.  I arranged for our airline tickets using our air miles (free!).  The only way we could get to Auckland  using our miles was with an 8 hour stop over in Tahiti, from midnight until about 8:00 a.m.

Whoa,  can we back this trip up  and spend a few days in Tahiti?  Of course you can said the accommodating agent.  So we tacked on another few days.  We had to stop over anyway, why not stay a while.

The first day at the resort where we stayed, a young couple were married and came out to the beach restaurant for a wedding lunch.

The happy couple were serenaded  by
a Tahitian combo

They smiled for their own wedding photographer as well as everyone taking pictures from the adjacent beach.

It was a few days before Valentine’s Day, and a perfect time for a wedding and honeymoon, and a wedding anniversary trip as well.

Evita At Rest at Last

With only a few days left before Halloween, perhaps it’s appropriate to take a walk though  the famous cemetery,  La Recoleta in Buenos Aires.   La Recoleta is a fashionable  neighborhood with tree lined streets, boutiques, restaurants and French style buildings.    It is also the place of burial of the rich and famous.

The most visited of the tombs in La Recoleta is that of Eva Peron.

But she did not always rest here.  Her history after her death is a strange one.  When she died, her husband, Juan Peron was  president of Argentina.  He planned to bury her under a grand statue which was to honor the poor.   Before it could be constructed , poor Juan was overthrown in a coup d’ etat and fled  into exile.

The anti-Peron military wanted no part of the Peron name  in Argentina, so after moving her remains around from place to place for a couple of years, they sent her remains into hiding, under an assumed name, in Milan.  Later, she was moved to Madrid to be near her widower.

Another change in government brought Peron  out of exile returning  him to Argentina and the Presidency.   One would think that he would continue with the monument, but it was not to be. Poor Evita was left in Madrid.

After his death, Peron’s third wife sent for Evita’s remains and had her buried along side her husband in the Presidential  palace.
They rested together only two years when another coup occurred .  Juan’s remains were moved to his family crypt, which was later broken into and his hands  cut off.

Evita was moved to her family crypt in La Recoleta Cemetery over 20 years after her death in  1952.  This did not set well with the upper crust as they objected to her being a illegitimate child.   She was  securely buried 27 feet deep under concrete and steel to prevent vandals from breaking in.  She rests in the most expensive real estate in Buenos Aires.

(Note the cobwebs on the upper nameplate.)

The cemetery is vast, with row after row of tombs and is home to hundreds of stray cats.

Hope your will join us for Potpourri Friday!

Until next time, Honey

Quebec City Halloween

Last October we were in Quebec City.
Your can read about and see a stroll through the old city  here.    The town hall in the square of the old city was decked  with adorable Halloween decorations.

An eerie  tree  filled with  bats and crows,

A   line hanging full  of  the witch’s clothes,

A pumpkin patch with a  big black cat,
Who  rides on the broom with the witch in her hat.

Piles of pumpkins and flowers and gourds  in baskets,

Crawling  with spiders  dressed in black furry jackets!

Watching ‘ore all were two  ghouls of some type, they were very tall, but the did not gripe

About all of the people snapping their image,
They  just stood there and smiled and  watched over the village.

If I hear any snickering about this poem these lines, they will be deleted.

Hope to see you for Potpourri Friday!

Until next time,
Honey
