1992 Score Super Star #70

Card Review: 9.1 This is a huge improvement over the 1991 Score Super Star design.  Both feature shots of Wallach in blue long sleeves under the road uniform.  A bit of an odd combo that isn't seen in very many cards.

Take a look at 1992 Triple Play, it's virtually the same design.  I'm pretty sure that the old Mac I had growing up had a paint program with this same background fill as an option.  Given the amount of crap that the companies were putting out, it's surprising you didn't see more identical designs popping up.  "We need a new set, but I don't want to pay for more than an hour of the graphic designer's time on the art concept.  In fact I don't want to pay at all, just have an intern whip something up on one of the office computers."

1991 Score Super Stars #58

Card Review: 1.9  For reasons I can't rationally explain, I've always despised this card design.  On it's face, there's nothing horrible about it.  It's not wild, or overly crazy in any way.  It's about as basic as you can get.  But it just misses.  I think a few tiny changes would have made all the difference.  For one, get rid of the green.  If the Expos logo on the front were outlined in yellow, it would completely change the tone of this card.  I'd also have done the names differently.  Keep with the red/blue theme, maybe by bringing the blue box up higher and doing the letters in red or white.

As to what this set is/was, I don't really know.  I have no idea how these cards were sold.  I'm guessing as some sort of boxed set.  I don't remember ever seeing one until years later when eBay became a thing and I saw this Wallach for the first time.  It has the look of something that you would have seen in a clear plastic casing, hanging on a rack in a store, similar to the Classic sets.  But that's just a guess.

1988 Score Glossy #70

Card Review: 8.5 Score didn't waste anytime getting in on the "glossy" action putting this set out to accompany it's first set ever in '88.  I'm not sure they really thought it through though, as their whole gimmick was that they were the first cards to have full color backs.  The base card was in a sense, "glossy," and this set would seem to undermine that claim.  As for the scans, you're just going to have to take my word for it that these are glossy, as it's nearly impossible to tell.  In hand, they are clearly glossy, a distinction that is pretty easy to tell (unlike the Fleer glossy sets).  So I'll give Score credit for that, at least their glossy set was in fact glossy.

1991 Score #210

Card Review: 8.0  The first few score designs all had really nice backs.  The front of this card leaves a lot to be desired.  Besides the fact that it's a little too similar to the '88 Score design for my taste, the imagery just doesn't work well.  I don't like photos taken on rainy days, and the green border doesn't mesh with the blue uniforms.

1993 Score Select #190

Card Review: 8.4  I kind of like the green design used for this set.  I'm not wild about the slanted photo cropping, but I'll say this about this set,  it's a lot better looking than the Score base set from '93.  It also seems more in line with previous Score sets, like the bright colors from '88.

1993 Score #211

Card Review: 3.4  I'm not sure what Score was going for with this design in '93.  Whatever it was, they missed badly.  This set just looks generic too me, like something a cereal company would hastily throw together for box insert.  These awful Expos uniforms didn't help either.

1995 Score Gold Rush #382

Card Review: 7.4  This card is just a fancier version of the '95 Score base card.  Neither one is any thing to really celebrate too much.  Credit to score for sticking with the complete career stats on the back.

1991 Score #865

Card Review: 9.8 I loved this card when it was released. Not only did I like the card itself, which I still think is a nice design, but for the fact Score went with Wallach.  As a result, there were two Wallachs to be had in the set, which doubled my chances of pulling one from a pack of cards.  I bought a lot of Score in '91 as a result.

"The Franchise" subset featured one player from each team, and after years getting snubbed for Diamond Kings and the like, it was nice to finally see Wallach get included in a few of these sets in '91.  Score also did a very nice job with the write up on the back.

Fun Facts: *On the back of the card Expos Manager Buck Rodgers is quoted saying; "He's a blue-collar worker who grinds it out every day.  He doesn't mind getting dirty.  He beats you with his glove.  He beats you with his bat."

1995 Score Hall of Gold #104

Card Review: 7.2  I like Score's inclusion of Wallach in this set a lot more than the card itself.  I mean, the card is pure junk, so the rating is more of a nod to it's inclusion of Wallach than it's design.

Fun Facts: *In 2002 Tim Wallach received only 1 vote for the Hall of Fame.
*In 2002 471 BBWAA voters incorrectly filled out their Hall of Fame ballots.

1989 Score #220

Card Review: 9.6  For whatever reason I've always liked this score set.  Very nice colors and design.  I can still vividly recall the the "plastic bag" type material the packs came in.  Jose Canseco, card #1 following his 40/40 season in '88, was the first card in the first pack I opened that year, and for some reason that memory has stuck with me.   I really have no major complaints about this set or this card.  A very nice sophomore effort from Score.

1994 Score #446

Card Review: 8.7  Score did a pretty good job with this card.  It's over glossed, giving it a cheap generic feel, but photo is interesting, there's a nice write-up on the back along with full career stats.  If nothing else, Score was still staying true to themselves in 1994 while other card companies were throwing tradition and idenity into the dumpster in the name of the premium card.  So credit to Score for staying true to Score, even if they did go way over the top with inserts.  Because I'm okay with that.  I would have no problem with all the asinine inserts of today featuring shiny gimmicks, desecrated jerseys, and impresonal autographs, if the Topps base set still felt like the "Topps Base Set" from aprox 1957-91.

1995 Score #382

Card Review: 6.7  There aren't really any glaring flaws with this card, but at same time there's not much on the positive side for me to say about it either.  I'm not a fan of the colors, or the design.  The 3D effect on the front just mkaes the picture look smaller to me.  I do like the fact that Score included complete career stats on the back of the card, but that alone isn't enough to redeem this rather forgettable issue from Score.

1988 Score #70

Card Review:
9.1  I've never been wild about this photo, or the baby blue uniform/purple border combo, but all in all a good looking card.  I remember this set being a major event at the time.  It was the first  new"real," set to come out in seven years.  A year later Bowman and Upper Deck would put out sets and things would go wild from there, but in '88, Score was a wild concept.  I distinctly remember the feel of the plastic "bags" packs came in.
Fun Facts: *This was the first set ever put out by Score.
*Score opted to package their cards in white plastic bags rather than the wax used by Topps, Donruss, and Fleer
*Score put "sportsflix" style square trivia cards in their packs in lieu of gum, stickers, or puzzle pieces
*A year later Bowman and Upper Deck would put out sets bringing the number of available base sets on the market to 6

1992 Score #565

Card Review: 9.4  This is pretty solid front photo and design.  However the back is terrible.  I can't look at a Score card from this period without thinking of there plastic bag style packs.  It was just a weird experiences to pull (stretch) one open.

Fun Facts: *4th Wallach card issued by Score
* Back correctly note's Wallach was named the 1st Team Captain in Expos history in '91
