The Frances Edging

This lace edging comes from Weldon's Knitted Edgings and Insertions No. 442, Vol. 37.  I am using it for a shawl knit with my Silk Camel yarn.

It knits up quickly and is an easy pattern to remember.

I have tweaked it ever so slightly by changing the last stitch on the ws rows to a knit instead of a purl.  The pattern instructs to just slip the first stitch on rs rows - I slip purlwise with the yarn in front, so by knitting the last ws stitch instead of purling, I have a nice clean edge to pick up for my shawl.  There are of course other ways to get the clean edge, but this way is my preferred method.

Cast on 8 stitches

Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k1, yo, k2tog, k2, yo twice, k2
Row 2: yo, k2tog, p1, k1, p to last st, k
Row 3: Sl 1, k1, yo, k2tog, k to end
Row 4: sk2po, p to last st, k

Repeat these four rows for the pattern.  Happy Knitting!

Open Twist Lace Edging

Sample knit with #10 Crochet Cotton on US Size 0 Needles

K = Knit
YO = Yarn Over
P = Purl
K2tog = Knit 2 together

The double yarn over in Row 1 will be worked as separate loops on Row 2.  The third stitch of the K3 is the first loop of the yarn over, and the purl stitch is the second loop of the yarn over.

Cast on 7 stitches

Row 1: K3, YO, K2tog, YO twice, K2
Row 2: K3, P1, K2, YO, K2tog, K1
Row 3: K3, YO, K2tog, K4
Row 4: BO 2, K3, YO, K2tog, K1

Repeat these 4 rows for the pattern

In the video, the sample is knit with worsted weight yarn on US Size 10 needles.  I also show you the sample above to compare the two.  Fine yarn and small needles can create very elegant lace.

Crow's Foot Stitch

Sample knit with Caron Spa on US Size 6 needles

This is very similar to Bamboo or Wrapped Stitch; the only difference is that you are passing a slipped stitch over the knit stitches instead of a yarn over.

*If you are unfamiliar with any of the abbreviations below, you can find them in the tab at the top of the blog*

Work on a multiple of 3 + 1

Row 1: Knit all stitches

Row 2: K1 *YO, Sl 1, K2, PSSO*
Row 3: Purl all stitches

Repeat from Row 2 for pattern

Handsome Lace Border- Vintage Stitch Series

Sample knit with Patons Lace on US Size 4 needles
I thought it was time for another vintage stitch!  This one comes from the NY Daily Tribune, Sunday July 4, 1880.

As with a lot of the vintage patterns, we will be working with multiple yarn overs - meaning, in almost every row, you will be wrapping the yarn over twice.  Each of the wraps will be treated as separate stitches on the following rows.

Here is the video, and below are both written and charted instructions for those who prefer either or.  Happy Knitting, and Enjoy!

French Lace Edging - Vintage Stitch Series

Sample knit with Patons Grace on US Size 5 needles (Kollage Yarns Square  Needles)

I decided to do another vintage lace edging this week.  I have seen "French Lace" stitch patterns several times in the old books and newspapers, and this is the one I chose this time.  This appeared in the March 19, 1882 New-York Daily Tribune and was submitted by Emma Estelle Wetsel.

Cast on 15 stitches
Row 1: K3, YO, K2tog, K3, YO, K1, YO, K6
Row 2: K6, YO, K3, YO, K2tog, K3, YO, K2tog, K1
Row 3: K3, YO, K2tog, K2tog, YO, K5, YO, K6
Row 4: Bind Off 4 sts, K1, YO, K2tog, K3, K2tog, YO, K2tog, K1, YO, K2tog, K1
Row 5: K3, YO, K2tog, K1, YO, K2tog, K1, K2tog, YO, K3
Row 6: K3, YO, K1, YO, S2KP, YO, K4, YO, K2tog, K1

And here is the video.  Happy Knitting and Enjoy!

Lorne Pattern - Vintage Stitch Series

Sample knit with Caron Simply Soft on US size 7 needles
This is the next stitch in the Vintage Series that I love.  This one comes from The Lady's Knitting Book, Second Series published in 1881 by E. M. C.

The pattern calls for "plus 2" stitches - one to be knit on each edge.  If using this stitch alone in your pattern, I would add a few more to make a wider border, because the edges look a little sloppy to me.  If you are a tight knitter, try to loosen up a bit, or use a larger needle so the 'knit 3 together' will be a bit easier on you.

Cast on a multiple of 5 stitches plus 2

Row 1: K1, *K2, YO, K3tog, YO*, repeat from * to end, Knit last stitch
Row 2: K1, *P3, K2*, repeat from * to end, Knit last stitch
Row 3: K1, *P2, K3*, repeat from * to end, Knit last stitch

Repeat these three rows for pattern.

And here is the video.  Enjoy!

Alencon Lace: Vintage Stitch Series

Sample knit with Butterfly Super 10 Mercerized Cotton yarn from Mouzakis on US size 8 needles

Another beautiful vintage stitch - Alencon Lace.  This makes a narrow lace edging, good to use on whatever you like.

Pattern notes:
YO(2) - make a yarn over twice - wrap the yarn around your needle two times, instead of once as for a regular yarn over.  Both of these wraps will be worked in the next row.
In Row 2, the P1 is to be worked on the second wrap of the double yarn over from Row 1.
To make a yarn over at the beginning as in Row 2, just place your right needle under the yarn, hold it in place with your index finger, and then begin knitting as normal.

Cast on 10 stitches

Row 1: K3, YO, K2tog, YO(2), K2tog, YO(2), K2tog, K1
Row 2: YO, K3, P1, K2, P1, K2, YO, K2tog, K1
Row 3: K3, YO, K2tog, K8
Row 4: Bind off 3 stitches, K6, YO, K2tog, K1

Repeat these four rows until the piece is as long as you like.

And here is the video - don't mind the cat.  Sorry for the funky lighting on this one; it is extremely windy today, so I filmed inside in front of a window.  The sun was behind a tree outside of the window, so you can sometimes see shadows moving around - that is the branches of the tree blowing around.
