BAD GUYS - Bad Guynaecology (Album Review)

"There is no meaning and that's the point, there is no point at all"

I was introduced to Bad Guys by Joop Konraad of The Stoner Hive blog. They grabbed me and put me in the back of a van, they stripped me down to my tighty whiteys, tied me up, gagged me and forced me to "Witness a New Low" ... metaphorically. Before you get the impression that this is one of those social justice "call-out" articles, let me say that although part of me was more than a little repulsed and appalled by what the band did to me (...metaphorically), I secretly enjoyed the experience and would have gladly taken seconds ... though I'd never mention so in polite company.

Enter the band's second album, suitably titled "Bad Guynaecology". Bad Guys are here to make you feel uncomfortable, from the traumatizing album cover on down. They're the funky uncles, the politically incorrect raconteurs of hard rock. Like Jesus before them, Bad Guys take the losers of society on board and give them a voice. But before you get the impression that this band is all fun all the time and that their music is inconsequentially light, understand that behind all the madcap storytelling sits a heavy nihilistic spirit. While clowns may grin but weep inside, Bad Guys leer while numb inside.

The opening track, "Crime" is a vivid and memorable tale about shoplifting. It's told in the spoken/sung style reminiscent of Suicidal Tendencies's "Institutionalized" (as an easy example). The story is told from the shoplifter's point of view as he goes through the motions and emotions of the crime. While the shoplifter's motivations may be slight and spoiled, it matters to him and the force of its telling makes it matter to us. The rogue's gallery exhibit continues on the next song, "Prostitutes (Are Making Love In My Garden)", featuring a catalog of Bad Guy observations about the world's oldest profession is exactly the kind of song you'd think twice about playing in front of sweet little old ladies.

What makes Bad Guys good is that they don't shy away from the grimy underside of life, they turn over the rocks in society and observe and record the scurryings. This is science, the study of absurdity. The song "Reaper" says it all, really: "There is no meaning and that's the point, there is no point at all".

Musically, the band is adventurous, but favors a rough stomping ground, offering 8 songs and 40 minutes of hard rockin' good times. There's a good amount of variation here and Bad Guys are coming from a punk-ish place, spiritually, but to me the highlight of the album is the storytelling, which is unusual because I typically tune lyrics out and listen to the vocal melodies.

BLACK RAINBOWS - Hawkdope (Album Review)

If you don't know by know, then 'Hawkdope' should cement things for you: Black Rainbows are one of the best rock bands in the world. The consistently high level of artistry of the band's output over the course of eight years, four albums, one E.P. and a highly regarded 4-way split album is staggering. I wrote about them once before, for the 'Holy Moon' E.P. which you can find at this location, but I'm not sure I drove the above point home enough in that one. This is the band's first full-length album since 2011's 'Supermuthafuzzalicious!!' and in that time some things have changed and some have stayed the same. Let's get into it ...

I caught on to Black Rainbows very early on in my discover of the underground stoner rock world. Before facebook, before the Paranoid blog, way back when I was deep down the wormhole of youtube suggested video links. I heard a song off of the band's 2010 album 'Carmina Diabola' and it blew my tiny, insignificant mind. When I finally tracked the album down I wasn't disappointed, it was a masterpiece. It's just a collection of 10 straight forward scorchers with some proggy elements. The same can be said of the above-mentioned follow-up from 2011. I saw 2013's 'Holy Moon' EP as somewhat of a departure. The band was spreading their psychedelic wings to a certain extent, with songs like "Chakra Temple" and the title track, it was an experimental effort. The band has always had a touch of Hawkwind in them, but I don't think anybody could have expected the "sound paintings" sections found on the EP.

'Hawkdope' is classic Black Rainbows, but they've retained more than just a hint of those psychedelic tendencies to stay true to their label name (Heavy Psych Sounds). For the most part, the new album is stuffed full with head-down rockers, but room is made for smoke-blown sections and ripping solos. This is Black Rainbows gone cosmic, but staying within the lines of their established boundaries. The Italian trio subtly deviates from the formula here, musically and structurally and the result is a more dynamic album. Though the pausey rhythms that characterized earlier albums have largely been jettisoned here, the stripped down approach acts as a stage II rocket, propelling the band into the cosmos. Musical boundaries have been eliminated, this is the band's apotheosis. Black Rainbows can go anywhere from this point, the nine-minute title track is proof of that.

'Hawkdope' will be released this Saturday, March 14 by Heavy Psych Sounds, but you can stream the entire album right now over at The Obelisk website.

XII BOAR - Pitworthy (Album Review)

Artwork by Beak - Six of One
It's not my first day or nothing, but I'm still new here. When it comes to underground heavy, I'm still green. It's a maxim of mine that it takes 15 years to become truly good or proficient at anything you do, be it something creative, a job or even just listening to a certain type of music. I'm about a fifth of the way there, way down the seniority list. XII Boar is one of those bands that you hear about, over and over. If enough of the right people talk about a band I'll make a mental note to check out the next release. Trying to play catch up and listen to everything is bailing a flood with a thimble. Well the time has finally come and XII Boar has a new release. After a pair of highly regarded EP's the band is releasing their debut album on March 9.

XII Boar is often labelled as sludge or even doom but I call it biker rock. It's an unswerving, unrelenting, fast-driving terror trip of heavy music. This is bicycle-chain-being-whipped-in-your-face-in-a-midnight-park-brawl music. Well, you either shy away from it and turtle, or you use the adrenaline to keep driving and fight on. XII Boar is suited for the latter personality type.

From the wicked throw down of savage opener "Sharp Shooter" to the epic finish of "Quint" this Aldershot power trio shows no mercy. The album title is no lie. The 10 tracks on this 48 minute album keep a quick tempo, but tend to alternate heavy, slower, riffier moments at opportune times. And the album's not without it's melodic moments, see the sublime "The Schaeffer Boogie" for evidence of that. It's a good signature sound and they carry it well.

With XII Boar being from the UK, the style they play immediately brings to mind bands like Orange Goblin and Desert Storm and newer groups that I just happened to hear first like MageThe Grudge and Beardmore. They also wouldn't fall off the stage on a double bill with Midnight Ghost Train. But even among this excellent lot, XII Boar excels. Bands like XII Boar are to Motörhead what ... Windhand, for example are to Black Sabbath. They are the children of Lemmy and crew, ensuring the sonic lineage while building on it and sending it to seething new places.

Incidentally I was never sure how to say the band name, all this time I've been reading their name as "She-Boar", well it's Twelve Boar. Either way this band spells trouble and 'Pitworthy' will leave scuff marks and bruises. The album is available now!

THE DESSERTS - The Strangest Man Vol.1

Here's one I found on The Evil Engineer's bandcamp feed. Nothing is known at this point about the band. The general nature of their name makes it search prohibitive but what is known is that this EP contains some good low key rock n roll. Sweet melodies melted down and carmelized into saccharin stoner rock. The Strangest Man Vol. 1 features 6 short songs, none longer than about three and a half minutes, for a grand total of 18. The big surprise here is the last track "Blue" which has an early Pink Floyd meets 'Purple'-era Stone Temple Pilots feel to it. It's not the kind of thing you hear on every stoner rock EP. 'The Strangest Man Vol. 1' is up on bandcamp for dirt cheap, so you might as well check on it if you're into low-key stoner jams.

THE GOOD KIND OF MUSHROOM - TGKOM EP

Well I was preparing an entirely different The Good Kind of Mushroom feature when this got dropped on me like manna from heaven (that's a pun, not a cliche). Broadly, The Good Kind of Mushroom is a stoner rock duo from Texas who specialize in improv jams and if two long EP's released within the span of a month is any indication, we may be in for a sustained deluge. And that's what this EP is in many respects, a deluge of ideas. But don't let the improv label freak you out. If you've ever participated in improv then you'll know that already worked-out ideas are presented in an unstructured environment and that's what it sounds like we've got here. The ideas are fully developed but they're presented in an unpredictable way. What you get substantively is some good tie-dyed blues mixed with stoner metal, depending on the mood of the exact moment it was recorded. Groovy. I've got to say I like this second EP better than the first, though I thought the first was damn fine, but just for completion's sake, I'm going to include players for both EPs below.

OWNER - Shame Face

The impression I get here is that Owner are the Tom Waits of the stoner scene. No, not calliope-infused weirdness Tom Waits, I'm talking smoke-filled blues bar on a Tuesday night Tom Waits. From the early days, back when he knew his entire fanbase by name, her name was Starla and she had VD. This Portland trio is just different. They're a little bit Nick Cave and a little bit Truckfighters. They're so different and unusual you'd swear they were from Finland! Well, my name may not be Starla and I don't have VD, but I am a fan. This 4-song, 24-minute EP is up as a PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT download on bandcamp, so you can be too at a reasonable price.

LUNG FLOWER - Death on the Crowsnest EP

Got another heavy Vancouver band for you, and these guys are standouts. I first caught a whiff of Lung Flower about two years ago when they had a different vocalist and slightly different sound. I mean not totally different, but less metal-y. Anyway, the band recently returned with a new vocalist and this bangin' three song EP. This is much heavier than I remember the band being, they sound almost like a NOLA band here, straddling that line between thrash and stoner rock the way Eyehategod does so well. There's also a healthy dollop of grunge ladled on top, not entirely unlike a Tsar Bomba, Satellite Beaver or even Cultura Tres. Anyway this is a PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT situation so if you're into heavy sludge rock, you'd be a fool not to check this out.

MOON - 20 Hours

Don't shoot The Men Out Of Nowhere. There comes a time when all things meet their maker, and so stoner rock traveled back to the birth place and was introduced to the father, blues. The results are explosive. But don't shoot The Men Out Of Nowhere (MOON) they are only the messengers. This German duo put up the long-awaited follow up to their 2011 self-titled debut today, called '20 Hours'. Presumably that's how long it took to record the album from start to finish, but I have no idea. The resulting 40 minute hayride is fuzzy blues, to be sure, but don't expect some Black Keys by a different name. Moon walks their own path and just as well, there's no telling who's on the road to ambush and intercept the message. I've heard and felt the blues in less capable hands and friend, it ain't pretty. This album is ruggedly handsome indeed, in a dusty, punkish way.

LADIES OF LEISURE - Demonstration

Found this awhile ago but had it stuck in wishlist hell for unknown reasons. Six song, half hour demo from a trio of well-dressed guys from Chicago. Thick, occasionally choking levels of fuzz and good driving rhythms. Not much to dislike here, not much at all. It's PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT so throw a copper in their collective hat and rock out to some great stoner tunes.

CLOUD CATCHER - Enlightened Beyond Existence

Found this a couple days ago. A solid 2-song, 15 minute slice with some varied moods. Kind of a psychedelic take on Black Sabbath, just as riffy, dark and heavy. This is just some awesome old school rock n roll, heavy as hell. It's pretty amazing when you think about it, just how versatile this music is. You'd think that after a lifetime of listening to heavy riffs the novelty would wear off or it would all start to sound the same and get lost in the wash, but that's not the case at all. Not when bands like Cloud Catcher continue to appear. These guys have been around for a hot minute, they've got a lot of facebook likes and they've even had a mention in Metal Hammer, but this is the first I've heard them. These two songs are 8 and 6 minutes long but they're over before you know it. This is not entirely unlike a more expansive version of Mothership. Give it a listen, you'll love it.

Cloud Catcher, an epic three piece descending from the Rocky Mountains, brings you cascading astral riffs from in between the intergalactic folds. Cloud Catcher picks up where early Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Leaf Hound, and Shinki Chen left off, dipped in early Priest and Buffalo-era heavy rock, and encrusted in the timeless, astral vibes echoed by more recent heavy psychedelic act, Earthless. Cloud Catcher emits ethereal and aural enchantment that will mount you upon the comet tails of brilliant psychedelic resonance, enabling you to transcend time, and expelling you into a heavy, bluesy, hallucinatory, cosmic excursion. All this being said, these guys have created a unique, soulful, and vibronic sound that that is an invention all their own and is not to be overlooked. Lie back and enjoy it.

REVEREND SNOW - El Bandero

Found this one on Paul Rote's feed, via Steve Rodger on bandcamp. Another great Canadian band, it's only three weeks in, but this is shaping up to be Canada's best year yet for music. The cover is unassuming but inside is what every stoner rocker is looking for. Reverend Snow is raw like a pustulating sore, the fuzz is thick and snaps like a live wire. I could go on, but I'll spare you, but the sound here is not entirely unlike Fu Manchu at times. The cover is unassuming but inside is what every stoner rocker is looking for. What you get here is 11 songs and 48 minutes of blazing rock n roll and you can NAME-YOUR-OWN-PRICE. If there's one criticism to be made it's that the rawness that defines the performances, spills out into the way it was mixed. It isn't muddy or tinny, but it's a bit thin in places. I don't care about that stuff, though. I'm not audio snob, just give me them sweet jams!

BLACK SMOKE DRAGON - Earth Have Jaiah

Found this, once again, on the indispensable MrStoneBeliever channel on youtube. Black Smoke Dragon apparently have been around for awhile, but this is the first I've come across them. Heavy instrumental stoner jams loaded with film clips and an intro by Bill Hicks. Obviously, these cats have good taste! The songs aren't crazy short, but when you compare the track length to the bands they're in the mold of, they are down right mini. Imagine, if you will, Belzebong jamming as if they have a plane to catch, Bongripper quartered into more easily digestible pieces. Black Smoke Dragon makes other musical references as well, paraphrasing surfer riffs and fuzzing them out in one instance, more southern stuff and an healthy acknowledgment of horror film scores. This is good shit, I can tell already it'll be on constant rotation for months to come. It's also available as a PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT download.

BURNING SAVIOURS - Unholy Tales From The North

Burning Saviours new album is a bit heavier than some of the last few singles the band released over the past couple years and were collected on the album 'Boken Om Förbannelsen'. This is a much doomier effort overall which I like and is a good marriage of dark riffs with classic 70's rock ideas. The sound here is not entirely unlike a Mountain Witch or a Noctum, dark retro rock. I can already tell that this is going to be something I go back to repeatedly. You can listen to "Your Love Hurts Like Fire" on the soundcloud player below (Ironically the chorus to that song popped up just as I was typing the title!). It's a good 'un and I imagine that many music critics will have this one somewhere in their top end-of-year-lists. Those who can remember the January albums anyway. There always seems to be a bias in those list towards albums that came out later in the year. There are several reasons for this ... anyway, Burning Saviours, 'Unholy Tales From the North'. It's going to be out on Transubstans Records, January 28. You're going to love it. Dark retro stoner jams with a doomy touch. Pre-order your copy at this location. My one and only gripe here is that 7 songs and 28 minutes feels like a glorified EP, but you know how I am. I pig out on music all day long. I want more of this!

NOTE: The last two albums that the band released are the only ones I've heard, though 'Unholy Tales From the North' is their fifth. I can say nothing about the band's overall journey or what long term fans might expect to hear. But to my relatively fresh ears, I find this album to be excellent.

OYABUN - The Hiss

I'd been awaiting this one for some time. It finally came out this week and it's terrific, as good as I could as expected. I first found out about Oyabun when I heard "Brontosaurus Blues" on the old Grip of Delusion compilation series on bandcamp called The Book of Riff-Elations. Unfortunately "that something" is no longer there, but the massive free comp did it's job as I ended up ordering a CD from the band. It's still one of my favorite songs. 'The Hiss' plays out in a similar way to 2011's 'Gods and Dogs' in that the best songs are right up front, "Self-Made Slave" is fast becoming a favorite around here. It's arguably the heaviest song on the album and probably the catchiest. The emphasis on 'The Hiss' seems to be in creating a full album experience, highs and lows. As much as this is a heavy rock album with 30 to 40 year old sensibilities, there are a number of slower, more contemplative and even heartfelt moments. As always vocalist Fabrice Dercourt shines here with a soulful performance. The record ends on a muscular note as well. Give it a try, I dig it:

SPIDER KITTEN - Toker

Spider Kitten has long been known as a band that's heavy as balls but not afraid to take chances. Both characteristics are abundantly evident on 'Toker'. It's six songs are split into three originals and three covers. The only cover I recognize is Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man", which is one of my brother's favorite songs and it's performed well here, with much the same feel as the original but somehow heavier. "Longhaired Redneck" and "The River Man" are acoustic jams. They surround the short "Coquettish" which only increases the song's heaviness. Anyway, 'Toker' just came out today and is a nice change of pace for devotees of unceasing heaviness. You can go ahead and PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT to download from bandcamp.

ENDLESS FIRE - Self-Titled

I found this one on Paul Rote's bandcamp page. It's not as hard-edged as some of the other albums you'll hear on this site. This is traditional rock n roll with some modern touches. Fans of Kadavar and Blues Pills may appreciate Endless Fire. The album is punctuated by bluesy moments which spill off into heavier movements. It's easy to tell by listening to this album that Endless Fire loves what they do. It has that fun, excited spirit. They make the kind of music that Small Stone Records digs. There are only four songs on stream at Endless Fire's bandcamp page but the full album download gives you 8 songs in total. That's excellent value for €3.

Bio
It was back in 2008 that Erik (guitar) and I (Joerg - vocals) first met through our former drummer. Without a bass player it was just for fun and we did some cover-songs. Then Erik had to pause for half a year. We did not want to calm down and started to search for another guitarist. After a month, or so, Nicolas joined the band. It started to get more serious and we composed our first songs. Short after Erik’s return our drummer left the band. Once again we were in search for musicians. We found Berri (drums) and later Franzi (bass) who completed the band. Since then we have been trying to get/play as many gigs as possible to increase our proficiency and spread the word. Currently, we are recording demos to bring our music to a bigger audience. All in all: LOTS OF FUN!!!

PODCAST - ep004 - Faster, Pussycat

There are so many mind-blowing songs coming out right now that it's incredibly difficult to pare it all down to one concise hour of the best music, but I've tried once again. The song to song flow may be a bit off, but what can you do when amazing bands are coming at you left, right and center with all kinds of different styles? You just dig your heels in and enjoy the barrage. I fixed the audio so that the levels were about even on all the songs but I don't think it worked out too well so if you wildly different volumes levels on some of the songs here, I apologize.

HOWLING GIANT - Howling Giant EP

Cover artwork by Sue Davies.
This is a fun one. Fuzz rock with the kinetics of a bakini-babe monster flick and the high drama of a mid-70's Marvel comic book. But if you're expecting surf or punk rock with horror-themed lyrics, think again. There's an underlying current of power metal in some places or some thread of late 80's metal here. Howling Giant are at their best hear when they stretch out their legs in a longer composition, the six minute "Camel Crusher" is arguably their finest hour, allowing the fuzz to do the legwork. This band is the spiritual cousin of Wolfmen of Mars and new band Corman, but forge their own identity and don't come out much for family outings. This EP is catching on fairly quickly. It's always a surprising mystery what will catch on and what seems to lag behind. One of the reasons it's catching is that it's a PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT download and ultimately, quite good.

THORR-AXE - Gates of Winter

This one came out yesterday, Thorr-Axe's second album. Like their first, 'Wall of Spears' this is just some straight up primitive metal. If you've heard the band then you know what I'm talking about. These four young dudes use their energetic magic to conjure the true viking spirit once again, only this time the spirit is battle-weary, less inclined to jump head-long into the fray. A touch of doom greys the whiskers and intensifies the bite of cold landscapes on display. Ah, but there's still some fight left in those bronze age bones. Consider the band to be wise or selective berserkers here. It's hard to believe it's been four years since 'Wall of Spears' came out. I only found it about two years ago and it seemed fresh even then. Recommended for those who like their metal old, bold and frosty.

JUST THE MUSIC

THE PYRE - Single

To complete a triple crown that I had no idea I was trying for I bring to you, The Pyre. This German band has an awesome two song single out on bandcamp. Like Psychic Wounds and Worshipper, this one's also PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT and worth every penny, but that's where the similarities end. This is thicker, fuller-bodied stoner rock, belied by a pounding attack. The vocals range from low key to aggressive / downright crazy as the band manage to show quite a variety of styles on just two tracks and if and when a full length album were to arrive I'm sure it would be a critical darling because of it. Just based on this one quick 7 minute outing, I'm willing to call The Pyre a band to watch.
