Poty's Pictograms

These pictograms come from the flaps of the 1968 Knopf edition of The Third Bank of the River by João Guimarães Rosa.

Though no actual credit is given for the images—the flap says "Front of jacket illustration by David Holzman, flaps adapted from the Brazilian edition"—commenters let me know they're the work of Poty.

Napoleon Potyguara Lazzarotto (1924–1998) was a well-known Brazilian artist. His many ceramic-tile murals can be seen all over his hometown of Curitiba (one, two).
