I was sold a Fake Cartier Santos watch…
Cartier confirmed the watch was not authentic — appalling purchase and complaint experience
I paid £5,135 for a watch catalogued and sold by Fellows as a Cartier Santos. When I later submitted it to Cartier for a routine service, Cartier confirmed in writing that it was not authentic. I supplied those findings to Fellows.
There had already been a separate problem with delivery. Despite my instructions not to ship the watch to Ireland, it was sent there, resulting in customs charges of €1,359.45. Fellows subsequently refunded the buyer’s premium under an arrangement agreed in response to those charges.
After repeatedly requesting written confirmation of the refund amount following Cartier’s findings, Fellows eventually stated that it would refund “around £3,900” if its own investigation agreed with Cartier’s assessment. It explained that it would deduct the buyer’s premium previously refunded. I dispute this treatment because that earlier arrangement addressed the shipping and import-charge complaint, months before the authenticity issue emerged.
Fellows has offered to arrange collection and accept responsibility for the watch from collection onwards. However, it requires the watch to be returned for an investigation, anticipated to take approximately one week, before making a final refund decision. Although it has now indicated an approximate amount, it has not provided the firm settlement commitment I have requested. I find that unacceptable in light of Cartier’s written findings.
The watch remains securely held. I am willing to make it available for inspection at a Cartier location in Ireland, subject to arrangements with the boutique.
I have raised a chargeback with my credit card provider and intend to pursue that process. If the matter remains unresolved, I will consider civil proceedings to recover any remaining unreimbursed losses.
I also want Fellows to explain how this watch was catalogued and sold as a Cartier Santos following its stated inspection. Its description and specialist expertise were central to my decision to buy.
The purchase, delivery and complaint-handling experience has been appalling. Having been sold a watch that Cartier has confirmed is not authentic, and faced this unresolved refund dispute, I no longer have any trust in Fellows as they have sold me a counterfeit Cartier Santos watch!
Update following Fellows’ response:
Fellows has received Cartier’s written confirmation that the watch it sold me as a Cartier Santos is not authentic. It has offered £3,950 in full and final settlement, subject to the watch being returned for its own inspection and investigation.
The original purchase price was £5,135. Fellows previously refunded the £1,185 buyer’s premium following a separate shipping and import-charge complaint. It is now taking that payment into account in its settlement offer. I dispute this because the earlier arrangement addressed the customs charges incurred following delivery to Ireland.
I have raised a chargeback with my card provider on the basis of Cartier’s findings and intend to seek recovery of any remaining unreimbursed losses through civil proceedings.
The watch remains available for inspection by arrangement. The authenticity complaint and financial settlement remain unresolved.
Would you feel confident buying from a luxury watch specialist after this experience? I relied on Fellows’ expertise and description when purchasing this watch. I no longer have that confidence nor should you.

There was no information whatsoever that the items could only be shipped to the cardholder whose card was used for payment. The solution agreed with Fellows was for an authorised person to collect the items in person, but upon arrival it turned out that the authorised person was not allowed to collect them after all.
A waste of time and money. I do not recommend them.
