Indonesian Patia Minang Fighting/Battle Axe
This fascinating and rare battle axe is from Minang Kabau. Indonesia and is a traditional Patia Minang Axe used in inter tribal warfare and the martial art of Silat Minang. The axe has a curved wooden shaft and handle and a hand forged iron/steel head which has a flower-like armourers' mark. It is incredibly sharp! The axe head is firmly fixed to the shaft with woven bamboo strips. The head and shaft have a wonderful patina and there are traces of dark red staining on both the head and shaft- this could be old blood but I am no expert. The axe measures 82cm in length and the head protrudes 14cm from its binding on the shaft. The cutting edge is 6.7cm. The postage listed is for the UK only. Bone / Ivory Celt Axe Artifact Ancient
Up for bid is a very unique and unusual ancient celt axe. I have done exhaustive research to try and identify its origin. But I was inconclusive. What I do know is that it has been recently separated from a large collection of artifacts; belonging to a man who had resided in West Virginia. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. However, I will share with you my findings thus far. From a first glance. And feeling the dense artifact in your hand, it appears as though it may be mammoth ivory, but I do not believe this is the case. I have not been able to clearly identify a continuous pattern of“V” Schreger lines that would designate the material as ivory. When examining the celt closely, one can clearly notice darkened canals and Haversian pits all throughout the artifact. From my perspective, all signs point to bone; which makes this piece ... morethat much more interesting. Dimensionally, the celt measures(4 ½ x 1 1/ 8 x 1 ¼) at its largest center. Based on the size. Mass, and visual lack of a marrow canal on the tool, I would confidently say it is whale bone. Having stated this, and taking into consideration the oil stained patination covering the artifact; I believe it may have originated in the Thule or proto-Inuit era. I say this because it is clearly evident of an ancient coastal culture. Again. This is only my educated guess from the research that I have done. It is absolutely authentic, but as for the rest, you can decide. If you believe it has originated from elsewhere, please let me know! I am very interested in understanding its culture.
