The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. The present example is an exceptional mid 20th century work that was field collected in Benin(the Yoruba live in both South West Nigeria, Benin, Togo and other coast areas) Some of the most elaborate court art in Africa comes from the country of Benin(once called Dahomey) home of the Fon kingdom, and from western Nigeria, home of the Yoruba and Edo kingdoms. Benin City, in Nigeria, is the capital of the Edo-speaking people. The art of the Fon kingdom incorporates animal imagery, symbolically associated with royalty and with proverbs that reinforce moral laws and the power of rulers. Since the seventeenth century, Yoruba-speaking peoples have been organized in a series of kingdoms. Much Yoruba art is made in association with deities known as orisha, each associated with particular iconography. The subject sculpture displays native repairs to the base, back, and sides of face. Heavy Antique African Slave Bangle Silver Metal Dish.
This auction is for a wonderful old dish.Made from an antique African slave bangle.The large heavy bangle is made from white metal/coin silver and would date to the early 19th C.The piece has,at a later date been made into a bowl-with the addition of a handmade copper liner.There are some dents in the bangle-from age and wear but it is very well made and heavily detailed.I hope that you can see this from my photo's. BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the ... moreland of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet of SEKHMET in excavated uncleaned condition. Height 3.4cm x 2cm wide and 1.8cm deep, circa 1100-500 B.C. Intact and un-restored. A hole goes through one side to the other just below the ears. This is wearable with care and professional clean if preferred. Faience was made from a compound including a crushed quartz like material which was usually pushed into a mould, left to set, then fired which turned the material into a glass-like substance, coloured by adding a dye from a crushed blue flower found in Egypt. There is also an Ancient amulet of this flower on sale here at present also made of Faience. Ex U.K. collection. Certificate Of Authenticity supplied. Three strips have been sewn together with raffia in a manner that means the three sections fold over each other as a triple thickness. As it has never been used I have laid it on the ground with weights to show its full size.It all rolls up neatly so it can be carried from place to place. A beautiful design has been created with dyed purple and red reeds. The mat measures approximately 167 cm(66 inches) x 94cm(37 inches) when laid out. The mat could also serve as a wall hanging.
