Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, bent. Visible traces of glue, loose strands, dust on cloth top ball loose, Yoruba Beaded Crown Blue Adenla Nigeria Africa Additional Information: A superb Yoruba beaded crown entirely in blue beads and decorated with birds and balls! The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically. Only direct descendents of one of the sixteen children of the god ORISHA, first king of the Yoruba people, can wear them. ORISHA blessed mankind with the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the secular from the sacred. The crown itself is worshiped. It is placed upon the king's head from behind, usually by the senior wife, because he may not look upon the bird which goes on the top, which holds powerful medicines to protect him and his destiny. The veil is to keep viewers from seeing the king's face, masking his individuality, and also focusing attention on the real focus of power, the crown. The birds on the side symbolize the fact that the king rules"only with the support of the mothers. Crowns limited to those who could trace their heritage to Odudua, first king of Yoruba(at Ife) Crowns are called orisha(deity) and is the object of care and veneration by a woman at court. The veil focuses the viewer's attention to the crown and to venerate the king's head. Orisha is the generic name for a deity and not a king. It was either of the orishas Olokun(god of the sea) or Obalufon that gave humans the gift of beads. In the past, the use of prestige beadworks such as this was limited to kings, priests and priestesses and certain diviners. Birds represent women, and signify that the King cannot rule without the support of women. Recommended Reading: See F

Early to Mid Century Hand-Crafted African Kuba Drum
Early to Mid Century Hand-Crafted African Kuba Drum This is a genuine African drum crafted by the Kuba people who live in what is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo-formerly Zaire. It is about 40" tall Good overall pre-owned condition. There are expected signs of age and usage over time. The waterbuck(non-endangered species) skin cover is still in very good condition with only one tear and some wear spots but still tight and very usable. There are some minor splits in the wood and one larger chip on the base and a separation on the stand. I have pointed out some of these areas in the pictures for easy viewing. This is a great authentic African piece. Please see pictures. This drum is for local pick-up or the buyer arranges and pay for freight/shipping. Contact me for payment options on pick-up

Good condition with some wear as seen in the pics. The full-figured female torso that serves as the harp's neck is surmounted by two heads. Traditionally said to represent the Mangbetu's Queen Nenzima and King Yangala. The placement of the tuning pegs and strings to the neck are typical features of Mangbetu harp construction. The twisted copper wire depicts the geometric, dotted, linear body painting favored by Mangbetu women. The elongated heads represent the Mangbetu's Queen Nenzima and King Yangala. Neck length: 27 1/2 inches; body length: 17 inches. The popularity of the donnu at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century was short-lived, ... moreand the ornately carved harps are no longer a part of the Mangbetu's rich musical culture. It has even been suggested that the harp may once have been less important to the Mangbetu as a musical instrument than as an art object to be traded for economic advantage with the Europeans. Recent sales of Mangbetu harps at Sotheby's and Christie's have brough prices over $100.000. Examples of this instrument can be found in museums. inkfrog terapeak. I000000.

HARD WOOD IRON COPPER PLATE SHELLS GOOD OLD USING PATINA 57 CM HIGH TRIBAL USED OBJECT FIRST HALF 20 TH CENTURY EX IMPORTANT DUTCH COLLECTION
EXHIBITED large 25" Senufo helmet mask "Kopnyungo" Fire-spitter, no reserve
This is a large p olka dotte Senufo helmet mask"Kopnyungo" kno w in the West as a Fire-spitter. Very impressive array of tee th and tusks in nice contrast to two cute chameleons on top. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery. This mask was exhibited in that exhibition. I have included photos of that installation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. Janiform(meaning 2-faced) example would have been worn at Poro ceremonies including funerals and would also have fought sorcery( dee bele) and harmful spirits( nikw’abele) At the top of this helmet is a small cup held by two chameleons. The mask was not complete until magical substances( wah) were ... moreplaced into this receptacle. Additional Information: A superb piece. With matched four-horned faces on either side, one shared pair of ears, and paired figures on top pulling on the bowl which would have held magical elements. Red and white pigments have been applied over the black, but use has worn them away somewhat. Inner patina suggests wear. This large helmet mask known as"Kopnyungo. meaning literally a funeral head mask is worn by senior members of Poro at funerals of deceased and honored members. Large composite masks danced by the Senufo symbolically incorporate a number of different animal motifs to create an image that is aggressive and powerful. The crocodile mouth at the front of this mask incorporates warthog tusks coming out of the upper jaw represent the uncontrolled forces of the bush. This mask is most probably used by Senufo farmers and when worn the dancer would look out through the opening of the mouth. This is an excellent example of Senufo masks. Size: Height: 14.5" width: 25.5" depth: 9" 6 lbs Provenance- some of my items have solid provenance. Others like this do not. I will never make a claim a specific age or tribal usage unless I h

In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves

Title, Mudcloth Bogolanfini Handwoven White with Motifs in Black Mali African, Type of Object, Cloth. Fabric, Textile, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Bamana, Materials, Cotton. Dyes made from Mud and Leaves. Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 44 inches x 69.5 inches Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, None, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. Additional Information: Bogolan or Bogolanfini is Malian name for the traditional African mud cloth made in Mali. In the Bamana ... morelanguage. The term"Bogolan" or"Bogolanfini" means Mud cloth in English. The same term is also applied to the process of making these cloths. Bogo means earth or mud. Lan means with or by means of and fini means cloth. To make this cloth the artist uses a hand spun and hand woven cloth on which he/she adds designs of his/her choice. The process of producing these textiles is very long and involves both men and women. The cloth is handspun and handwoven by men who use local cotton and small strip looms. The strips produced are sewn together to make a large cloth. Almost ten strips are needed in order to get a normal wrapper size cloth. Each strip is around 5 to 6 inches wide. In traditional practice. The sewer joins the strips using needle and thread, and in more recent times the artist works with a hand-operated sewing machine. The finished cloth is then washed off and dried in the sun. The dried cloth is soaked in a mixture of pounded leaves from local trees. Once dried. The cloth is ready to receive the mud dye and its decorations. Traditionally, women were in charge of decorating the cloth. Today both men and women can decorate a cloth. With a small bamboo

Additional Information: A Kuba square raffia textile made of three strips decorated with finial patterns. The following are excerpts from Kuba Textiles and Design. By Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river along which the BaKuba live. Improvisation and irregularity charact

Old cracks in rim and in center, indigenous repairs, chips, scratches, Nupe Wooden Bowl. Nigeria, Africa Additional Information: This wooden bowl decorated with geometric patterns is a work of a Nupe artist. The artworks of the Nupe are highly respected. Even though the variety of objects they produce is very small. The limited nature of Nupe art is due to the strict influence of Islam, which has controlled the social and religious life of the Nupe for at least 250 years. Muslim law forbids the use of art objects that possess human figural elements, considering ... morethem profane. The Nupe, unable to express themselves in such fashion, instead developed a magnificent ability to decorate utilitarian objects with intricate geometric incising. They craft extraordinary carved calabashes and wooden bowls, fashion stunning terracotta vessels, and weave exquisite, highly-prized textiles. Wooden bowls such as this would be used by women in kitchen activities. To serve meal or to store foodstuffs. The popularity of Nupe art with serious collectors is a testament to their skills and their unique adaptability to social upheaval. The Nupe have always lived near the confluence of the Niger and Kaduna Rivers. They are a group of about 500.000 people. They live mainly in Niger. Though often associated with the Hausa. The Nupe are not related to them in any way, only neighbors. In fact, the Nupe speak a unique language unrelated to any other. Prior to the 15th century, the Nupe were subject to the Igalas, who were subjects of the Kingdom of Benin, some 150 miles down the Niger River towards the coast. The mythology of the Nupe honors their relationship with the Igala, understandable considering the violent subjugation suffered by the Nupe at the hands of t

The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically. ORISHA blessed mankind with the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the ... moresecular from the sacred.

30" tall African Dogon Granary Door with many figures, tribal, no reserve
This NO RESERVE auction is for a lovely Dogon granary door from Mali. This beautiful door is finely adorned. And was collected from the Mali region of the Dogon's native territory. Small doors such as these are used to cover the granary(grain storage) access points and were intended to keep out animals, as well as thieves. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room, as is the small latch. This door features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The latches are often ... moremissing on these doors, but this one is still functional and intact(although it looks to be a replacement? Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. Starch-resist is a technique that consists of applying a dye-resisting agent to a cotton fabric by coating the surface of the cotton cloth with flour paste(cassava or cornflower) and then immersing it in a cold water dye such as indigo as is the case for this textile. Starch is only applied to one side of the cloth. Cassava starch will be applied through the zinc stencils and the stencils placed on top of the cloth would be pressed into the cloth with a metal spatula. To well perform this task the cloth will be nailed flat on a table. A series of stencils may be required to get good patterns. The cloth will then be soaked into the the indigo- dye bath repeatedly to make sure the dyeing process is well-done. The starch is then scraped off the cloth, which is hung out to dry. 71839* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct

SLAVE TOKEN / MANILLA FROM THE DOURO CORNISH SHIPWRECK
SLAVE TOKEN/ MANILLA FROM THE DOURO CORNISH SHIPWRECK 1843 The trade in Slaves had been going on for many years and brought great wealth. Especially to England. They were manufactured in Birmingham between1830-50 and measure approx. 2.2 inches across, one token would buy one slave. This Brass/Bronze Slave Token also known as a Manilla was recovered from the wreck of the 200-ton English schooner the Douro. She was sailing from Liverpool with a cargo which her manifest stated included baled goods. Armoury and brass stops; she hit the Great Crebawethan rocks off the Isles of Scilly in heavy fog on 27th January 1843 and sank very quickly, her entire crew was lost and a ... morefew days later six bodies and the ship’s figurehead were recovered, little else was salvaged. When she was found accidently by divers in the 1970’s the brass stops on the manifest turned out to be thousands of bronze manillas which lead to some speculation that the Douro was an illegal slave trader. This slave token comes cleaned with brief info booklet, presentation box and with cert of authenticity signed by the diver who brought it up from the wreck.
