Vintage African Kirdi (Cameroons & Nigeria) Beaded Loin Cloth/Apron/Cache-Sexes
Old African beaded loin cloth/Cache-Sexes/apron. From the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the estate of a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. I was told he bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. He passed away in 2010 in his 90‘s. His label stated that the piece was from Nigeria. 15” W x 5” H + a 1” row of shells along. Item is old and has been used and worn. There is one minor tear at the bottom corner. But not really seen when hanging(see last photo) In the book“The History of Beads” The author Lois Sherr Dubin has a cache-sexe pictured, and states that the loin cloths“were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations, age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon ... moregovernment has long outlawed the wearing of the cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes. The glass-beaded aprons reveal a variety of chevron and triangular patterns. Cowrie shells are usually hung from the bottom of the apron. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)
African Beaded "Diviners Belt" Wall hanging
This is an African hand made beaded and shell wall hanging often referred to as a"Diviner's Belt" From what we can determine this appears to be a Yoruba Nigeria example from the 80's or 90's. The images are accurate for that area and time. The bead work is extremely complex and detailed-much more so than most other examples we have seen and the shells on the border are continuous and are end to end where many just have a few spaced out along the edge. Images are correct for Yoruba wall hangings. Masks at the top, middle and bottom with turtles, lizard and fish in the body of the belt. Backing of belt is a brown cotton fabric that is folded and sewn and has a beaded loop at the top for hanging. Wall hanging is 46.5 inches long and approximately 5 inches wide. Every square inch of the front is beaded-the detail is remarkable. ... moreShipped insured in the USA.

Rare. Antique African grannery door from the Dogon in Mali, probably I was told, over 100 years old. Beautiful patina all over and original wear shown on it. Stylized figures on the edges and images of breasts in the center; Small. 5" w x 10" but a great piece! Door was bought from my African dealer friend who just returned from a trip to West Africa(with many more items still to arrive) He told me that he hasn't seen an"original" door of this type in a very long time and said this was a rare find for him. Even though he has"pickers" always on the lookout for good quality pieces. I bought the two he found so check my listings for a larger one as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Yoruba Ibeji Twin Figures, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations gallery, art, Yorba
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing ... moreit holds sacred. These figures adhere to the sculptural tradition of the Ibeji cult, with Ibeji meaning'twins' as the Yoruba hold twins to be sacred, and remarkably, as a people, have one of the highest incidences of twin births in the world. It is believed that twins are a single soul harbored within two bodies, and whatever ill befalls one twin, befalls the spirit of both. In the event that one twin dies, a frequent occurrence due to the high infant mortality rate in much of Africa, the soul(or half of the soul) residing within the other twin will be considered out of balance, causing life difficulties, etc. The parents of this surviving twin would have a figure commissioned by a local diviner, which would then be treated as would the surviving twin, and would be believed to become a vessel for the other half of the soul. In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual. In the event that both twins were to die, a commemorative set of figures would be commissioned. The figures are, stylistically, produced similarly to other figures in Yoruba culture, but the young are generally depicted as adults, in the artist's interpretation of features po

African Tribal Antique Akan Ashanti Rare Cast Bronze sculpture a buck Antelope
ine Extremely Rare Antique(circa late 1800s) A shanti Cast Bronze Large sculpture Chameleon From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 10 1/2" x 5" in excellent antique condition. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing ... moretemperatures to prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronzeworks found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu.

Separated by the Volta River, and the arts and rituals of these groups are quite different. The Ewe who live in Ghana use small carved wooden dolls for fertility purposes, similar to those of their larger neighbors, the Asante. They use pairs of small figures representing twins in a similar fashion to those of the Yoruba. The total output of the Ewe is limited to these few forms, most of which could have possibly been borrowed from neighbors. In addition to the ubiquitous small sculptures. The Ewe weave glorious and complex textiles, known as"keta, which are made of long cotton strips that are then sewn together. Though they are similar to the Kente of the Asante, there are distinguishing charactersitics which can be discerned by experts. There are those who think the beauty of the keta exceeds that of the kente, and undoubtedly the subject still arises as the two cultures mingle together in Ghana today. The present example is from the first half of the 20th century and a example of old techniques of weaving in West Africa. Bronze Cast Mbamelke African Judgment Chair
Mbamelke African Judgment Chair. Made of cast bronze with intricate figurines, with 2 matching round side tables. A museum Quality Antiquity.Throughout history, cultures have used various types of torture devices to force the truth. Or in this case a confession. Many West and Central African tribes used"judgment chairs" in their criminal trials, chairs that were believed to have the power to the reveal the truth. This intricately decorated chair was used by the Mbamelke of Cameroon. The Mbamelke used separate chairs for both male and females. If you notice, the figures on the chair depict male and female spirits. The accused was forced to sit in the chair during the trial and if they were found guilty of a crime. Such as murder or adultery, they would actually be executed while sitting in the chair. B Background Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary ... moreof the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were often spread over many miles, and were densely populated. The markets in these areas attracted numerous artisans and traders from throughout the region. At one time, Bukishi was a dominant educational society which helped to maintain social control through the use of kifibwe masks, but it no longer functions to this degree except in the southeastern regions bordering on Luba territory. The creator god of the Songye is Efile. Although sacrifices are not made directly to him. Much attention is focused on familial ancestors, to whom sacrifices are made to encourage the well-being of the individual and the family.
