I picked it up at an antique show from a guy who had lived in Africa for some time.I dont know much about them but here is some info that i gleened off ... morewikipedia: Akan goldweights were used as a measuring system by the Akan people of West Africa. Particularly for weighing gold dust which was until replaced by paper money and coins. They are referred to locally as mrammou and the weights are made of brass and not gold. Used to weigh gold and merchandise. At first glance the goldweights look like miniature models of everyday objects. Based on the Islamic ounce. Each weight had a known measurement. This provided merchants with secure and fair-trade arrangements with one another. The status of a man increased significantly if he owned a complete set of weights. Complete small sets of weights were gifts to newly wedded men. This insured that he would be able to enter the merchant trade respectably and successfully. Beyond their practical application, the weights are miniature representations of West African culture items such as adinkra symbols. Plants, animals and people. Liberia: Extremly Rare Tribal used African mask from the Bassa.
Extremly Rare and Tribal used African mask from the Bassa. Liberia. Hand carved from a single piece of colorful painted wood. Height: 38 cm. The Bassa. One of the largest Kru-speaking peoples in the central coastal region and adjacent hinterland of Liberia, have been strongly influenced by the Mende-speaking neighbors, especially the Dan and Kpelle. Their economy is based on rice which they cultivate around small villages which have a population around two hundred. Bassa artistic tradition has been also influenced by their north-eastern neighbors, the Dan, who live on the Côte d’Ivoire. The Bassa have several female and male societies, including chu-den-zo. To whom gela( geh-naw) masks belong. Bassa carvers are famed for their gela masks worn during the no men's society ceremonies when the wearer of the mask moves with feminine and ... moreelegant grace. The masqueraders entertain the spectators when initiated boys return from bush camp. When important guests visit the village, and on other festive occasions. The dancer wears the mask. Which is attached to a woven framework, on his forehead, and looks through a slit in the fabric which is part of the costume that covers his head and upper body. Because they are fixed on a framework, the interior of most such masks shows no signs of wear. Bassa sculptures also bare similarity to Dan and display monumental and solemn qualities combined with skillful carving. Figures of dogs carved with a human face on the side. As well as stools, are known to exist, although the purpose of the dog statue remains unknown. W e ship worldwide BUT outside Europe takes it 12 till 22 working days to be arrived.

Antique African Tribal Dance Ritual Helmet Hand Carved Wood Mask Ethnic Congo
Submitted for your approval this beautifully hand carved Wood African Tribal Dance or ritual Mask. Wood type is unknown. My father a long time collector of wooden Tribe masks and items. Is my source for this information. He is not a professional however he is very knowledgeable. From the carving methods. It appears to be from 50- 100 years old or more. Also it appears to be of rare size. Apparently carved for a child or small faced individual. Overall measurements 8" Tall x 6.75" wide. Very well fitted to a face with all openings clear. You can see through the eyes very well for a wood mask. The mouth provides plenty of air for dancing or. As you can see the mouth shape appears to have been crafted to accept a type of pipe or similar. This type of mask appears to represent fertility. Oil deposits inside the mask where it makes contact ... morewith the face are visible. All evidence leads to the assumption that this was genuinely used for many years before it was acquired. A very neat collector item. quite possibly a piece of endangered history. Please view the pictures closely& feel free to ask questions. Priced low to sell quickly.

ZULU MEAT PLATTER KING CETSHWAYO CONNECTION
What I can say for sure is that this is an old Zulu meat platter with two labels stuck to it! The weight and patina would certainly suggest it's 19th century. And there is an old auction label which certainly looks very old. It's the second label that is more interesting, however- it says'Dish and spoons.Chief Cetywayo& his wives. Unfortunately this is how it came to me. So I know nothing more of the story than that. Cetywayo' is of course the Zulu king Cetshwayo kaMpande, who ruled the Zulu kingdom at the time of the British invasion of 1879. He was defeated in the Anglo-Zulu War, and on 4 July his royal homestead oNdini, or Ulundi, was destroyed, having been first thoroughly looted by British troops. Contemporary accounts speak of British officers carrying away anything of interest from the king's personal quarters ... morein particular. It seems likely then that this is a piece of loot taken on that occassion. And that whoever took it, at least, believed it had belonged to the king or his wives. Without further provenance this cannot of course be verified. Platter itself is in sound condition but with some old chips to the rim. The label is VERY FRAGILE. Every care will be taken when packaging for shipping but obviously items in transit are always potentially at risk. The platter is 22 inches long from tip of handle to end. And 8 inches wide.

early 1900s carved african tribal weaving loom beater cameroon
Measuring 31 inches high and 17 inches wide approximately is this impressive early 1900s african tribal loom which i believe to originate form Cameroon. The piece is carved with naive figures decorated with small beaded necklaces. One figure has a loose necklace which is included and shown in the image in a small bag. There is a central loom with shuttle and simple carved decoration. The piece is simply constructed with morticed joints to secure the frame which is fairly strong. This is not ancient but certainly has age and i have listed as early 1900s. Please examine the images. The piece does have wear and shows signs of use but appears to be complete and not missing anything. Some discolouration and shrinkage gaps in places but no worm.
