Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! Patchwork skirts made of beaten bark and raffia are among the most prestigious of the Kuba skirts and overskirts. The way these media are combined depends on the taste of the weaver. In some cases. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known

Maasai of Kenya Turkana Tribe Food Container, Wood, Camel, Circa 1950's
Turkana Tribe. Kenya Maasai of Kenya, Turkana Tribe food container. Decorated round wood"food flask" container with camel leather top used by the Maasai and Turkana people of Kenya. Circa 1950s. Large 9" x 5" blond wooden vessel with unique wooden knobs that act as mounts for handle. Dark black sides. Wood bottom tanned camel hide top, carrying strap camel hide/hair, wt 1 lb. 9 oz. Aroma of past contents and animal hide. The Turkana live in the Turkana district of Rift Valley. In Kenya. Their exact number is not known. Estimates run from the old figure of 250. 000 down to 340,000. They are Kenya’s third-largest ethnic group of Nomadic peoples. Like their neighbors the Maasai. Cattle are their primary wealth. They always move from place to place in the search of good pasturage, water and fresh vegetation for the cattle. ... moreMany Turkana families are now engaged in agriculture and fishing. While there are a quite few art-producing peoples of Kenyan origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of East African art, the Turkana, along with their closely related neighbors the Maasai, are arguably among the most important of them all. In fact, much of the art from the Turkana region is composed of a wide variety of everyday objects out of wood, leather and gourd for milk, but in their hands many of these utilitarian pieces have risen to levels of beauty unparalleled in East Africa. They are carried as container with their everyday food. The leather cord was attached to jug help carry it easily. Located primarily in northwest Kenya and around Lake Turkana. The Turkana migrated to the area from the west. According to legend, young men of the Jie tribe went into the Tarash valley in search of an ox that they had lost. While there they met an old Jie woman gathering fruit. Impressed with the area, they talked other young people into joining them and moved with their stock. Since that time, the Turkana and Jie have been allies. The Turkana are divided into the forest people(Nimonia) and the pe

Old Lobi Wood Slingshot Lance Pierre of Female Burkina Faso Africa
OLD LOBI WOOD SLINGSHOT LANCE-PIERRE OF A FEMALE FIGURE- BURKINA FASO An old and naively carved Lobi wood slingshot or lance-pierre depicting a female figure. Carved fully in the round. The female has her two arms raised, these become an integral and functional part of the slingshot- the human form is ingeniously captured as a utilitarian object. The slingshot has become a lost miniature art form. And is to be appreciated for the individual character of each piece. Lobi carvers distinguish themselves in the unique style of each piece- a miniature art form that is gradually becoming extinct. This slingshot is carved out of a mid-weight honey-colored wood. Perfect symmetry of forms is captured with a superb rendition of balance and proportion. Rich patina of age and usage. Ethiopia: Old Tribal used Borana Milk Container.
This is a authentic traditional Old Tribal used handmade Ethiopian Borana milk Container. The size are 28 cm high. This is one of several types of basketry milk containers made and used by the Borana. A pastoral people who raise cattle in southern Ethiopia. The vegetal fibers used in their fabrication are woven very tightly, they are light and extremely durable, and serve as the ideal container for liquids. One of the key characteristics of the gorfa is the application of cowries. Small white shells that enhance the beauty of the container. Among the Borana, all women are expected to learn to make woven milk containers like the gorfa. Milk containers themselves are vital objects in a culture where raising cattle is of central importance. The milk that these containers hold is a symbol of abundance. The container's symbolic meaning stems ... morefrom its structure-in Borana society. Weaving is associated with fertility. The container and the milk thus symbolize the ideal combination of abundance and fertility, two fundamental requirements for the reproduction and prosperity of the family and community. In this society women produce woven containers and men carve wood containers. Both types of containers may serve the same utilitarian function but they are used in different social settings. There also are containers that have both wood and basketry components and therefore require the work of both a man and a woman, usually a husband and wife or at least members of the family living in the same household. Such containers reflect a fundamental element of Borana culture, a healthy interdependence between the sexes manifest in the complementary roles men and women perform in their families and communities. Part of the Oromo tribe– Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group– the Borana are estimated to total 500.000, but because many live in remote areas it is hard to know exactly how many exist. Borana speak Oromifa. They are traditionally semi-nomadic pastoralists, who depend exclusively on their livestock for subsistence: Borana

Zulu Beadwork Umgingqo Head or Neck Piece South Africa Old
Type of Object, Beadwork, Country of Origin, South Africa, People, Zulu. Probably from Msinga region, Materials, Bead. Plant fiber, Approximate Age, 1970s, Dimensions, 24 inches long, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, loose strands. A few missing beads, Zulu Beadwork Umgingqo Head or Neck Piece South Africa. Additional Information: Umgingqo- head or neck piece. This one is identical to one seen in South African Tribal Life Today by Morris and Levitas. Plate 68; See alsoHlengiwe Dube, ZULU BEADWORK.TALKING WITH BEAD. Made by beading tightly around a cotton cloth wrapped coil of grass or length of rope(umgongqolozi) Zulu beadwork has been valued as currency, as decoration, and as a marker of identity. Disingwayo the uncle of Shaka and Shaka himself, controlled the bead trade and monopolized not only the beads themselves but also the colors ... moreand designs available to groups within Shakaâs control. Beadwork became a status symbol and an important item of personal expression as well. Stylistic variations of beadwork such as pattern, color and color sequence indicate area or group affiliation. Colors and patterns take on more personally expressive meanings as in the case of Zulu âlove letters.â Recently beadwork has become a symbol of political identity as well, with color and pattern indicating political affiliation. Instead of beads being worn only by the conservative, traditional members of the community, wearing beadwork is increasingly being seen as reclaiming a cultural identity. Lot of 3 African Dan Tribe Ceremonial Masks
The Dan mask was used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation. Till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male mask ... moredancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit. The mask dancer goes into a deep trance during rituals and brings forth messages of wisdom from his forebears. The messages is inaudible and in uncontrollable utters, a wise man accompany the dancer during the ritual and translates the messages. The messages are often words of great wisdom, prescribing a way of life that will lead to longevity, health and prosperity. The cowry shells not only represent a decorative function. But also indicate that the sprits have blessed the young initiate with wealth. In the past cowry shells was used as money) The feathers signify beauty and the ability to take flight if danger arises. An important feature of initiation masks is that ears are not represented. There is one piece of wood chipped out of the inside of one mask can't see unless worn. Happy Bidding!
