Kalimba Mbira Thumb piano Mbira Dzevadzimu Zimbabwe Size: 23cm x 18cm. Keys: 23 keys. Tuning: A pitch by Andrew Tawedzera. Mbira dzavadzimu national instrument of Zimbabwe is a musical instrument that has been played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe for thousands of years. The mbira dzavadzimu is frequently played at religious ceremonies and social gatherings called mabira. Mbira dzavadzimu consists of between 22 and 28 keys constructed from hot- or cold-forged metal affixed to a hardwood soundboard( gwariva) in three different registers—two on the left. One on the right. While playing. The little finger of the right hand is placed through a hole in the bottom right corner of the soundboard, stabilizing the instrument and leaving thumb and index finger of the right hand open to stroke the keys in the right register from above and below. The ... morefingers of the left hand stabilize the left side of the instrument, with most fingers reaching behind the instrument. Both registers on the left side of the instrument are played with the left thumb and sometimes the left forefinger. Bottle caps shells. Are often affixed to the soundboard to create a buzzing sound when the instrument is played. In a traditional setting, this sound is considered extremely important, as it is believed to attract the ancestral spirits.

The owner's we re Baptist Mission aries in A frica during the 30's and 40's and these are the treasures that they brought back. There are some great items. Mbira - Hand-carved 12- note finger piano from Zimbabwe - late 60s
This item is a beautifully hand-carved. 12-note finger piano or Mbira as it's called where it originated in Zimbabwe. The keys are simple and it has good tones that can be changed by sliding the metal keys slightly up or down in the holding wire. The hanging loop is made from local fiber and rolled by women into this twisted cord. This mbira was made in the late 60s and has been in a private collection since that time. Dimensions. Length: 8 inches; Width: 3 7/8 inches; Depth: 1 1/8 inches.

They have a most interesting dense weave and possibly suggest farmers' hats in a sub- Saharan extremely arid climate. The smaller of the two retains one remaining original Leather Tie strip for securing under chin while the larger sun hat has very old elastic for holding in place. We believe that the elastic was probably added after the original creation of this hat. I can tell you that this was hand carved and the metal components are hand forged. The wood is also aged beautifully. The keys rest on a thin metal riff with a metal wire holding them in place. There are what appears to be copper wires in between each key to hold it in place. The four keys on the left make a nice sound when you play them. The two keys on the right come in contact with one another when played and rather than messing with it and spreading the keys apart, I just left them. This is an extremely rare find! ANTIQUE AFRICAN TRIBAL MBIRA THUMB PIANO KARIMBA KALIMBA 1880 djembe mask figure This is a BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE AFRICAN MBIRA or THUMB PIANO In my estimation it dates from the late 19th Century. Circa 1880-1900, but please make up your own mind about this. The instrument measures approx 7 inches(180mm) By 4 1/4 inches(110mm) by 2 inches(50mm) and consists of 9 metal"tongues" mouned upon a wooden reonator. see photos) It still works. And has a nice tone, with good sustain. The tongues can be slid back and forth to alter the tuning. It has light wear in keeping with its age. But no da,age or repairs(see photos) There is an old museum label and a collection reference number underneath. see photos) This is a fine example of its type and it would make a lovely display piece and be a great addition to any collection. The thumb piano is made of a kneeling figure surmounted by three expressive heads. The sound-box is a square placed on abdomen. Varieties of thumb piano are found throughout western. Central and southern Africa. I have a Nigerian friend who has told me wonderful stories about village life in his Igbo village in Nigeria. He had an uncle who played the thumb piano every night.one by one, children fell asleep, and their parents carried them off to bed. In his forties, my friend says he still remembers countless nights on his father's shoulder, hearing the sound of the thumb piano. This thumb piano is a traditional instrument which consists of a number of metal or wood keys. Our thumb has 15 keys made in reeds and mounted on an interesting sound-box made from wood and nicely decorated with repeated crocodile figures on the top of the box and alternate heads and figures on sides. The piano stands well and is stabilized with a oval base. Many traditional thumb piano were placed inside a calabash to get better sounds. Here.
