It was chosen to be a Naked Sea Butterfly to convey a sense of "the original Digimon" with a form close to that of an atom or a single-celled organism in addition to its cute appearance and the unexpected aspect when it preys. Watanabe Kenji's original design for Ukkomon was changed after Taguchi Tomohisa told him he already had an image in mind for Ukkomon and as such Watanabe changed the design to match that. As Ukkomon was to be the first Digimon to make contact with a human child, Watanabe decided to make the design a simple primitive creature. Its eyes were designed to be similar to the first Digimon that were created, and were shaped and colored similar to Agumon's.
