Hoodies
From cowls to trendsetters - hoodies and what's behind them.
Not many of our garments have such a living history as hoodies. Before they became clothes with cult status, they had to endure some ups and downs. The first noteworthy hooded people were monks, who found protection in the damp walls of the monasteries to protect them against cold and wet. The "hoodie" as we know it today has been around since the 1930s. An American company launched them as protective clothing for cold storage workers. In the 1970s, hip-hopper and street dancers used the loose clothing style of the hooded sweater as a delimitation to old-established rules and norms for a wordless rebellion. When the movie Rocky the hoodie came to the cinemas, the triumphal march of the simple hooded sweater was unstoppable. Almost incidentally, colleges and athletes also discovered the robust all-rounders and so hoodies with striking prints still stand for cohesion and team spirit.
