Blood and Iron - Horus Heresy Casual Gaming

During the last week or so we've had some neat Horus Heresy going on, and have got some proper games in after quite a while! To begin the fall gaming season we met with Rob from Medders' Miniatures and Heresy Hammer podcast, along with a crew of eager generals attending Rob's famous Kratos Tank Painting Course organized here in Helsinki! Arranged at Nopat ja Taktiikka, the weekend of professionally guided painting was a superb technical exercise that was able to educate and inspire all of its hardworking attendees. 

Before the course kicked off we assembled at our studio for an evening of dining, discussions and dice rolling, as we had the guys try out War Head Civil War's multiplayer "carnage" format. Always nice to witness new, spectacular models take to the field, and it was particularly cool to reconnect with Rob after the SN Battle Reports: No Retreat experience we shared earlier this year. Thanks for the visit!

This weekend myself and Ollie attended a three round narrative Horus Heresy event at Nopat & Taktiikka, taking our 3000 point rosters to reinforce the Traitor alliance. The positive gaming buzz, quality hobby vibes and the old and new acquaintances all played their part in making the day a success - we both enjoyed the rare occasion of taking part in an event as a regular participant instead of being part of the organization as usual. Ollie especially had gone through a massive effort to complete his new Iron Warriors detachment and I bet it was hugely rewarding to finally deploy them (first in our practice game, and finally at the event venue for the first time against loyalist opposition).

Game 1 - World Eaters vs Dark Angels Armoured Spearhead

First game, massed armoured onslaught of Willy's first legion. My reserve-based list is rather good facing tank opposition and I went with the usual modus operandi - deep striking right into the thick of it, trying to annihilate enemy scoring capability mostly or entirely upon the initial touchdown, even if it means leaving the enemy hard-hitters unscathed. The Dark Angels Deredeo proved to be super imposing and Marduk Sedras made a valiant push, but as the tank line was halted on their own deployment zone and most Line units lost their lives on turn 2, Dark Angels had hard time gaining any points in the progressive scoring mission. Both of us suffered huge losses in the bloody contest, but World Eaters took the win with a considerable margin.

Game 2 - World Eaters vs Alpha Legion and Armigers

Battle two against KuoFi's Juska was a great learning experience, as the expert Alpha Legion Headhunters scouted to kill my Master of Signals (and the precious reserve rerolls) on their first turn despite of my protective efforts. Luckily the deep strike element arrived on time and only the outflank aspect was delayed, and the World Eaters went to work. The allied Dark Fury and Deliverer units proved to be super spicy as is their reputation - I also had hard time with the opponent using their narrative trait to blow up one of my preferred objective markers and placing a denying Callidus Assassin upon another! Finally my MVP was a Skyhunter Jetbike Sergeant, who refused to give ground against a Contemptor and an Armiger on an objective, denying crucial points from the Alpha Legion and their allies before World Eater reinforcements were able to hurry to the fray. The end score was 4-2 in an intense clash, brilliant game against a great and sporting opponent who went on to win the Best Painted for Loyalists faction.

Game 3 - World Eaters vs Ultramarines and Imperial Knight

A perfect game to end the day, Kill Points and a single objective in the middle, fought against old mate Teemu Juselius! This game was essentially about hobby chat, a good laugh and banter as well as us both learning each other's lists and Legion intricacies. The city board provided a neat visual theatre for the bloody affair where Ultramarine characters in particular produced amazing feats, most notably the XIII Legion Champion taking my Warmonger Warlord's head in the challenge. Loyalists were not able to hold their formation together and lost most of their scoring capacity on turn two, so there was no comeback to report good news to Macragge - World Eaters pushed the Ultramarines all the way back for the 18-8 end result.

As the dust settled Ollie had recorded the Best Painted Traitor award with the newly-finished IV Legion, whereas my World Eaters were crowned with the accolades of the Best Traitor General and the Best Traitor Sportsman! We'll carry this inspiration to the fall painting sprees and hopefully recurring games, as Ollie finally has a tournament-sized list to direct!

The 308th Void Assault descended on city-guarding Ultramarines on the last event round. The Praetor of the XIII acted an epic last stand on the lone central objective, a command squad banner firmly planted on top of it, valiantly fending off ravenous assault troops closing in from all directions. Ultimately, despite the heroics, the day belonged to the scions of the Red Angel!

March for the Eternity Gate

A couple of weeks ago we marched to Kuopio, where the local gaming crew KuoFi had organized a narrative Horus Heresy event centered on the drama arc of the Eternity Gate during the Siege of Terra. Before the journey I had been hard at work pushing the World Eater roster to 3000 points, adding another Assault Squad and (a bit reluctantly to fill the points...) a Contemptor Dreadnought to the existing army. Unfortunately my painting time just ran out before I got to convert the Lascannon sponsons on my Javelins, but these will for sure feature in the next army list iteration. When we reached the event venue the World Eaters got to perform violent drop operations against two robust Imperial Fist armies and the knightly Dark Angels in the asymmetric scenarios during the weekend, recording to wins and a narrow defeat. Good times and the siege for the Imperial Palace has now begun!

The narrative missions really put the pressure on the brave Loyalists defending the Eternity Gate and Traitors took the upper hand in many occasions. My first game against the Imperial Fists was especially memorable and we had a proper nail-biter in a scenario where renewing waves of Traitors tried to take over the defenders' deployment area. The battle culminated in the final rolls where the World Eaters would have earned a round victory for the Traitor side if the last two Imperial Fist Tactical Marines would have either died to three missile launcher shots or failed their Leadership 7 Morale Check. This time luck was on the Terrans' side and the brilliant game ended in a draw!

All in all the event was well organized and the amazing spirit of the Finnish Horus Heresy scene was ever present - the "hobby first" attitude in army painting and the relaxed, casual army lists made sure all participants had a great time. Thanks to all participants and the hardworking KuoFi crew for a quality wargaming experience. The World Eaters will return!

Contemptor-Cortus "Crossbones", enslaved by the 308th Void Assault. I combined a classic Chaos Space Marine sarcophagus with the modern Contemptor kit for a ramshackle, field-repaired look. A couple of unfortunate Assault Marines have also lost their chainswords trying to bring the Dreadnought down.

I wanted the mechanics of the Contemptor appear unconventional and like the construct was put together in haste, with all kinds of wiring and inner workings exposed on the backside. The Conversion Beamer felt like a proper space warfare gun and not as optimized choice as some of the other Contemptor loadouts.

The Assault Squad was built with a dual purpose in mind, our thinking was that they could also be used as World Eater Rampagers in the future. The sergeant is probably my favourite model in the unit.

We kitbashed the modern Khorne Berzerkers with Necromunda Corpse Grinder Cult armament to create Caedere Weapon specialists with a bit of a gladiator feel.

The Berzerker kits combined with angled basing elements made for quite dynamic poses. The excess chaos trim was scraped off from the armour surfaces before the primer went down.

The entire unit had to be painted in one sitting to meet the tournament deadline, so I relied on our usual army painting techniques powered by airbrush basecoats, strong contrast colours and oil washes.

These warriors can't wait for the next deployment, and neither can I! Luckily the traditional War Head Civil War looms in the horizon.

War Head at Ropecon 2019

Ropecon is one of Finnish wargaming scene's mainstay events and a staple in the annual calendars of many painters and gamers. With over fifty miniature-related program features Ropecon's wargaming side was especially interesting this year - an open Army Parade competition, several tournaments, demo games, the traditional painting contest and Mordheim's 20th anniversary celebrations kept the visitors busy. War Head held its traditional classics bazaar with dozens of oldschool blisters for sale, and recorded some awards in the painting competitions. Thanks for the fun weekend!

Ropecon on aina hieno tilaisuus, mutta tänä vuonna organisaatio oli saanut uuden figuconiittinsa johdolla erityisen hyvän ohjelmakattauksen miniatyyripeleille. Useiden toimijoiden puhaltaessa yhteen hiileen saatiin jälleen kerran kasaan vaikuttava turnaustarjonta, monipuolinen demoalue sekä perinteinen maalauskilpailu, mutta mukana oli myös uutta ohjelmaa kuten avoin Games Workshopin Armies on Parade -konseptia jäljittelevä Armeijaparaati. Lisäksi Mordheimin 20v -juhlavuosi toi paikalle pelin suunnittelijan Tuomas Pirisen ja monia kansainvälisiä vaikuttajia, joiden #Mordheim2019 -projekti on ihastuttanut muun muassa Instagramissa ja Ironsleet.comissa kevään ja kesän ajan.

Omasta puolestamme järkkäsimme jo perinteeksi muodostuneen War Headin klassikkobasaarin, josta monet nostalgiannälkäiset löysivät lisäyksiä teema-armeijoihinsa viikonlopun mittaan. Myynnin ohessa osallistuimme myös maalauskilpailuihin ja toimitimme maalaustuomarointia ja -palkintoja Games Workshop -pelien turnauksiin; War Head on toiminut turnauksien maalauskilpailuiden suojelijana jo vuosia ja myöntänyt kehystetyt kunniakirjat kunkin turnauksen parhaille armeijoille. Upean kokonaisuuden tuottamiseen tarvitaan aina paljon näkemystä, taitoa sekä aikaresursseja, eikä sellainen saa koskaan palkintoa turhaan.

Figutiimimme isku maalauskilpailuihin tuotti myös tänä vuonna tulosta, kun World Eaterit onnistuivat voittamaan yleisöäänestyksellä toteutetun Armeijaparaatin ja Olli teki selvää jälkeä voittaen ryhmäkategorian ja showcase singlen Rogal Dornillaan. Kirsikkana kakun päällä oli Dornin maalauskilpailun kokonaiskisan voitto "best of show". Suuret onnittelut Ollille hienosta saavutuksesta!

War Head Classics Bazaar

War Head -figukirppis ja klassikkobasaari sunnuntaina 26.11. 12-16

War Headin Triad III Warhammer 40K -turnauksen oheisohjelmana järjestetään tänä vuonna kaikille avoin figukirppis, johon voi tuoda myyntiin omaa vanhentunutta kalustoa, maalattuja miniatyyrejä, bitsejä ja kirjallisuutta! Henkilökuntamme hoitaa tuotteiden kaupittelun, joten kirpputorimyyjät voivat itse keskittyä pelaamiseen tai matsien seuraamiseen. 

Omalla basaariosastollamme on myös modernien tuotteiden lisäksi vaikuttava kokoelma Warhammer Fantasy-, 40K- ja Lord of the Rings -klassikoita edikoiden takaa. Kaupan on esimerkiksi kymmenittäin nostalgisia blistereitä, avaamattomia metallifigubokseja ja vanhoja maastosettejä, joita ei ole saanut kauppojen hyllyiltä enää vuosikausiin. Ropeconin pisteellämme vierailleet tietävät mistä on kyse, mutta valikoima on myös täydentynyt kesäisestä! Wanhan ajan blisteririvistöjen tutkailu on hieno kokemus jo itsessään, kannattaa poiketa shopilla.

Kirppariohjeet ostajalle

Kirpputori on auki myymälän aukioloaikojen puitteissa 12-16. Myytävänä tulee olemaan monenlaista tavaraa moderneista käytetyistä figuista bitseihin ja klassikkoblistereihin. Asiakkaiden myyntiin tuomat artikkelit myydään yksinomaan käteisellä, joten mukaan on hyvä varata kolikoita myös tasarahaostoksiin. Tervetuloa shopille ja seuraamaan Triad-turnausta!

Kirppariohjeet myyjälle

Omia figupeliaiheisia tuotteita saa tuoda myyntiin kirpparille sunnuntaiaamupäivän aikana 9-12 tai kirppiksen jo avauduttua. Tuotteiden määrää ei ole erikseen rajattu, mutta jos myyntiartikkeleita tulee erityisen runsaasti, emme lupaa että kaikki ovat näkyvillä samanaikaisesti. Myytävät tavarat otetaan vastaan kahdessa muodossa:

1) Yksittäispakattuina tuotteina, joihin on merkitty selkeästi hinta ja myyjän sukunimi. Tuotteet voivat olla alkuperäislaatikoissaan, minigrip-pusseissa tai kirjojen ja yksittäisten isompien figujen tapauksissa irrallisina. Hintalaput tulee kiinnittää hyvin - jos tuotteen hinta ei ole selvä, otamme artikkelin pois myynnistä. Myyjän nimi tulee olla selkeästi esillä, sillä kirjaamme kaupaksi menneet tavarat niiden perusteella.

2) Laatikkoina, joiden sisältämät tuotteet ovat kaikki samanhintaisia ja boksiin on merkitty selkeästi tuotteiden hinta ja myyjän sukunimi. Jos haluat myydä kokonaisen armeijan, laita se laatikkoon, tee oheen listaus kokonaisuuteen kuuluvista yksiköistä kuntoineen ja valitse valmiiksi pari figua esimerkiksi maalaustasosta.

War Head -operaattorit hoitavat tuotteiden myynnin ja tilittävät kunkin myyjän myynnit kirppispäivän päätteeksi käteisenä. Myynneistä vähennetään 5€ pöytämaksu.

Tuotteet jätetään myyntiin omalla vastuulla - vaikka myyntiosastolla onkin kaiken aikaa valvoja, emme ota vastuuta näpistyksistä tai muista henkilökunnasta riippumattomista katoamistapauksista.

War Head in Ropecon 2017

Ropecon 2017 on koettu! War Head osallistui tapahtumaan tänä vuonna ensi kertaa omalla osastollaan, joka seurasi meiningiltään ja järjestelyiltään Model Expossa testattua kaavaa. Pystytys sujui reippaasti ja olimme hyvissä ajoin valmiita toimintaan!

Viikonlopun suosituin tuoteryhmämme oli ehdottomasti Ropeconin klassikkoteeman mukaisesti pystyttämämme nostalgiaosasto, joka sisälsi lukuisia 90-luvun ja 2000-luvun alun blistereitä ja figubokseja. Kirkkaanväristen blisterpakkausten rivit houkuttelivat heti perjantaina paikalle monia kiinnostuneita ja alkoivat huveta hyvää tahtia! Valikoima on osa pitkään keräämäämme figuvarastoa, joka on alunperin hankittu omaan harrastekäyttöömme, mutta ihan kaikkia projekteja ei tunnetusti ehdi toteuttaa... Osasta klassikoita oli tietty vaikeaa luopua, mutta uskomme niiden päätyneen hyviin koteihin!

Coni kokosi tänä vuonna entistäkin enemmän kävijöitä ja Messukeskuksen laajat tilat palvelivat tapahtumaa varsin tarkoituksenmukaisesti - edes myyntialueella ei tullut tunkkaista ja ahdasta tunnelmaa, kuten joskus kultaisina dipolivuosina. Ohjelmaa oli figupuolella joka lähtöön ja eri toimijat ja yhdistykset saivat vaikuttavan turnaus- ja demokattauksen aikaiseksi. Iso käsi kaikille Ropeconia tehneille puuhamiehille ja -naisille!

Meidänkään conikokemus ei sentään ollut pelkkää myyntityötä, vaan myös töiden ohessa ehti hiukan harrastaa... Otimme War Head -tempaukseksi tänä vuonna lohikäärmearpajaiset, joiden pääpalkinnoksi rakentui perjantain, lauantain ja sunnuntain aikana alusta loppuun Citadelin Zombie Dragon! Miniatyyrin valmistumista sai seurata osastollamme koko viikonlopun ajan ja sunnuntaina se arvottiin arpalipun ostaneiden kesken.

Epäkuollut lohikäärme liihotti messukuorman päällä perille pohjamaaleissa. Kahden miehen messutiimimme splittasi viikonlopun ajan myynti- ja maalausvastuun.

Eric työn touhussa. Lohikäärmeen työstämisen ohella viimeistelimme myös pikaisesti pari maalauskisaentryä.

Lopulta figu tuli valmiiksi sunnuntaina ja oli valmis arvontaan! Scenic basen lisäksi emme tehneet vaikuttavaan figuun mitään kummempia konversioita, vaan jätimme vain ratsastajan pois - siten taikaolento sopisi paremmin esille muidenkin kuin Warhammer-diggareiden hyllyihin. 

Samoin väriteema noudatteli tavanomaista kaavaa. Erityisesti luuosia oli hauska työstää tummanharmaan nahan ja siipien toimiessa hyvänä kontrastina.

Vereslihalla olevien osien kiiltoefektin toteutimme GW:n Blood for the Blood God -tehostemaalilla. 

Lopulta arvonnan voitti onnennumerolla yhdeksän Paula N.! Kiitokset kaikille osastollamme käyneille, ostoksia tehneille ja lohikäärmearpajaisiin osallistuneille!

Traitor Legions Night Fight!

War Head järjestää perjantaina 9. joulukuuta julkkari-illan uudelle Codex Supplement: Traitor Legions -kirjalle! Pimenevän illan aikana virtaavat musta kahvi ja veri, kun kaaoslegioonat valmistautuvat uuteen nousuunsa keskiyön koittaessa. Tapahtuma järjestetään War Headin myymäläosastolla Poromagialla. Ilta alkaa perjantaina kello 21:00, jolloin osallistujat voivat pelata vapaamuotoisia matseja sekä selailla uutta Traitor Legions -kirjaa. Keskiyöllä opus tulee myyntiin ja ennakkovarauksen jättäneet voivat lunastaa oman kappaleensa ennen pelien lopettelua. Huomaathan, että tuotteita on tulossa julkaisupäiväksi rajallinen määrä, mutta täydennystä saadaan jo seuraavan tiistain Fight Club -kokoontumiseen mennessä.
