Off the top of my head, the only completed series that hasnt been mentioned that Im in the middle of, the first book, Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko -- 4 in series.
This is only urban fantasy I was considering. I can give you a long list of completed fantasy and epic-fantasy series, which I might since youve included Tolkien and Lewis.

Shazzy - I was thinking that would be the cleanest too- we'll go with sorting by the series name.
Kathryn - we could make seperate lists for each genre. That would probably be more useful then just a long list of books. We could break it down into the following lists:
1. Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy
2. Fantasy & Epic Fantasy
3. Young Adult (??? These could most likely fit in other categories as well) hmmm

Yes, it is complete. She has written the Watcher series in the same world, about six hundred years earlier.
I never realized they are the same world either. I'm all caught up in the Watcher series and have really enjoyed it. Maybe I'll give Dante another try...
The series by Lukyanenko is 4 books.
Melanie Rawn has some of my favorite epic fantasies.

Wow, so I have tons of series on my shelves, soooo many book #1's, and I have no idea which are completed! I think this is a good idea Shanon!
Ummm, do you want series that will never have another book written about those characters, or just that the main body of the series is done? For example, the Twilight Saga may have the auxiliary book Midnight Sun added to it -- okay, that one is a big maybe. A better example may be His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman), which has its main trilogy, but also has 2 tie-in books that are fairly short. Another question would be series that are built of shorter sets, for example the Shannara Series. Terry Brooks is still writing for that world, but there are several trilogies that have been completed.
I think we should stick to stories or plots that are complete.
The Twilight one is iffy because Midnight Sun is the same story from a different point of view (right?)
I am not familiar with the Shannara series - but if the trilogies you are talking about have the story line finished - all tied up - no cliffhanger, I say we include them. Does that make sense???
A good example would be The Noble Dead I series by Barb & JC Hendee - it's completed but the main plot didn't really get resolved. Luckily, The Noble Dead II picks up right where the first series left off. I didn't include this as completed because the main story isn't done. No big battles yet - grr!
I hope that makes sense

Harry Potter has 7 novels in the series, not 6. There are also 3 extra books about the wizarding world she created but not directly in the storyline: Quidditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

That will teach me to not double check myself. I thought I knew that one! Thanks for catching it Briansgirl.
I think we'll leave the supplemental books out of the book count since they're more stand alone books in the same world. Also, that way I can use the book #s here on GoodReads. I haven't read any of her other books - are they as good as the Potter series books? Would you recommend them?

The best we can do is say it seems to be complete. The reason I say this is a few series I have read, and thought were done, suddenly 20 years later come out with sequels, or prequels (Think Dune and LOTR) or a new novel written by another person (Think Marion Zimmer Bradley and the Darkover-verse).
all i think of right now is the
Blood Ties Books by Jennifer Armintrout 4 in series
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman 3 in series
Lily Bard "Shakespeare" by Charlaine Harris 5 in series

Tales of Beedle the Bard was referenced in the 7th book, Deathly Hallows. One tale in particular is necessary to understand the final book. This is just kind of a fun way for her to have a little fun. It's short and I bought my copy for $5. She explains enough of it in the 7th book to complete her storyline, but it's enjoyable to read more about it.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is one of Harry, Ron, and Hermoine's text books. This is either Ron or Harry's copy as the two of them have notes scribbled on the margains, playing tic tac toe inside the front cover, lol, etc. If you've ever wondered what Hermoine's cat Crookshanks is, it's in there. As well as many of the large and/or creepy creatures you've run into throughout the books. Informative, fun and cute. Proceeds when to charity.
Quidditch Through the Ages gives you a more in depth look at the sport as well as it's origin. Again, very small book and proceeds went to charity.
If you like the Harry Potter books, I definetly recommend these last 2 at least as it just helps you understand more of the wizarding world.
I know these aren't traditionally counted in the set of 7 books, but I've found alot of HP fans aren't aware she wrote these. So if you're missing the series since it's ended... check them out.

One of my fave YA series is Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain. Its quite old, originally released in the sixties, and there are 5 books, narrating the story of Taran, the assistant pig-keeper. One of the books was actually made into a Disney movie called the Black Cauldron.
It's a great coming-of-age series, and I would recommend to any young and young-at-heart readers.

Thanks Yz & Stephanie for those additions.
I didn't add the Lily Bard series because it's strictly a mystery series and I don't know if I want to tackle another genre right now
I'll definately check out the other Harry Potter books Briansgirl. Thanks for the recommendation.

I wish I knew of more pnr/uf completed series. I guess maybe because this genre hasn't been around as long as fantasy/epic fantasy. But I really appreciate the list everyone!
I need your opinion. I was trying to figure out if the Aisling Grey series by Katie MacAlister is completed since the last book was published in '07.
I haven't read the series - so I have no idea, but would you consider it complete based on her website? It's so hard to tell with some series!
http://www.katiemacalister.com/faqs.p...
Q: Is Holy Smokes the last Aisling Grey book? Will we see any more of Aisling and Drake? What about all the things that weren't resolved in Holy Smokes?
A: Without question this is the most frequently asked question. The answer is that while I don't envision any more books with Aisling as the narrator, they still have a very large role to play, so they will continue to be included in subsequent dragon books. And yes, there are a lot of things that were not wrapped up in Holy Smokes--the fate of Fiat and Bastian, Chuan Ren, as well as Kostya. All of that will be dealt with in subsequent books. So those of you who are worried that you won't be able to get your Aisling, Jim, and Drake fix can relax secure in the knowledge that although there will be different narrators for other dragon sept books, they will continue to be involved in the storylines

From what the author wrote, it sounds like the series will continue, only the narrator will change. Odd, but authors can do whatever they want. lol Course, I havn't read the series, I'm guessing like you based on her statement.
WOW - we've already made a much longer list then I had.
It's nice to see that a lot of the PNR/UF ones are on my To Read list already - some of which I had no idea were completed.
Thank you for all your help! As you find more series that are done post them & we'll add them to the list.

I far as I can tell, and from reading the last book, I believe that the Gardella Vampire Chronicles are finished with 5 books. On the author's website there's a blurb that she's going to start a brand new series in 2010 with three books already planned.

There is more than one kind of series. There are books written with an arc. When the story arc is finished the series is finished. Then there are books written within a universe. Some of the stories may have 2 or 3 book arcs, but others will stand alone.
If there is no overreaching arc, an author can write books in a single universe for his/her entire life. And in some cases write in that universe in order or out of order. Marion Zimmer Bradley, for example, wrote Darkover books both in and out of order her whole life.

Cassandra Clare just recently released a statement saying there will be a 4th installment to the mortal instruments series...
I haven't heard of that series or author! Would you recommend the series Patrik? What's it like? (I've added to our list - THANKS!)
I have three more series that are done... 2 of them have recently been finished.
