Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments My friends are a persuasive sort. No, don't get me wrong, they don't really come up and ask me to do something and perhaps they never will, as they know that I don't usually do what I am told. However, they entice me, and boy do they entice beautifully! I am often pulled in without me being aware that I am and end up doing things that I often feel I am not best suited to. Case in point being this thread, a journal which is definitely not going to be a journal; an update point where after a month or so, I will definitely not update; a personal treasure trove which will end up with fewer treasures than most; and yet the urge to create it is strongest today after reading all those lovely logs and journals and not-journals.

I don't know what I want this place to record any more than I know whether I want to record it or not. However, the fact that I have a place where I can bore all those who stumble in here (whether by choice or otherwise) is absolutely scintillating and exciting as a prospect.

So, as usual, be prepared to be bored by loads of lengthy monologues about nothing and everything. It might have a few bookish mentions and some stray thoughts on plans for the year or years to come. It will be my musing space.. and everyone is definitely welcome here.

I shall start off by recording some of the ambitious things that I plan to do this year and you can all go away amazed and patting yourselves on your back --- because my plans are rarely put into effect!

Happy reading everyone!

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments I am planning to start this year by trying to complete a personal challenge that I had started and then promptly forgotten in 2016. It is an attempt to read books published from 1801. The idea is to complete reading at least one book for every year starting 1801 and to get a broad idea about how writing has changed over the years. Not sure how many years I will have to struggle to complete this one but hey, it's my personal challenge. So here goes.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Everyone has a bucket list of books that they want to read. I won't be morbid and say that this is the list that one makes of books to read before they die but modify it by saying that the books that one wants to read that has been in their radar but they have never gotten around to reading it. While bucket lists are always numbered to infinity, I shall restrict mine to 12, one for each month. The challenge I have put for myself here is that I should ideally and I shall repeat ideally finish the book in the month that it has been listed for. However, as the saying goes --- man proposes, god disposes.. I will settle for finishing them in 2018. ;)

Challenge idea courtesy, WRC

Sri's Bucket List 2018
Duration: 1/1/18 - 31/12/18
Books completed: --/12

January - The Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty: Delhi, 1857

✔ February - The Brothers Karamazov

March - East of Eden

April - The Museum of Innocence

May - The Orphan Master's Son

June - The Iliad

July - The Idiot

August - The Odyssey

September - Memories of Ice

October - Ulysses

November - Imperial Woman

December - The Stand

Months might change as I am reading The Stand with Syl, so will read it when she does. Also, East of Eden is with Manu, so might just change that as well.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments I was and am still a member of a group called Life of a Book Addict. They have a wonderful challenge, which is quite similar to the bucket list challenge above. It's called the 12+4 challenge, where you decide on 16 books that you want to read during the next year and you can read any 12 of those or all 16. To be very honest, I have never finished this one in all the years that I have participated in it. This year should ideally be no different but am trying to cheat it by putting in some easy reads... will it help? Only December 2018 will tell!

Sri's 12+4 Reading Goals
Duration: 1/1/18 - 31/12/18
Books read: --1/12 or 16

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Series are both a boon and a bane to readers. It fills up the much needed challenge numbers that one needs for the GR challenge and yet it isn't that easy to read and finish, especially if you are targeting the bigger series. Over the years, I have read and come to love quite a few authors for their series books, which provided a lot of entertainment and much needed break from the tougher reads and mundane real life issues. This year, I am planning on reading a few new series (new to me) and on completing some of the long pending ones.

1. Harry Dresden (Am sure one person will positively beam on seeing this as being my first chosen series to complete)

2. Eve Dallas - had read quite a lot of these but had started these again last year in an attempt to read the later and newer ones..but Ms. Robb keeps churning them faster than I can finish...

3. Farseer Trilogy - this isn't a series but a trilogy. I have read books 1 and 2 way back i don't even remember when... and need to finish book 3. So Fitz, my love, don't worry, I shall be with you soon. ;)

4. The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Books 1 and 2 read and the remaining lying in wait for me to finish... and hopefully finish I shall...

5. The Sullivans - One of my favourite romance series and Ms Andre is the best. Again, she writes faster than I can read.. so here's hoping to get to the stage where she has to write the next one.

6. The Century Trilogy by Ken Follett

and more shall be added as and when I remember them.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Non Fiction

I love reading books of all genres and non fiction is something that is oft neglected by me merely for want of time and space to read. However, this year, I am planning to read at least 10 non fiction titles to ensure that I have a holistic reading year.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Religion and Philosophy

Before you all go crazy, I shall confess, I am not religious per se and neither am I a devout practitioner of any religion or philosophy. However, the idea of religion and philosophy intrigues me, given that it is the force behind most of our arguments today. Haven't really planned on what I am reading on these topics but am sure I will stumble upon something that will suit my needs and quench my thirst for knowledge without making me go mad... ;)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Irish Book-ventures

As in 2017, I have just returned from a short but wonderful trip to Ireland. And like last year, I bought a few books (names of which I shall share later) to add to my ever increasing pile of books bought but not read. My endeavour this year is to read a few Irish authors, books set in Ireland, topics relevant to Irish society, basically a whole gamut of Irish fangirling which is long pending.

The icing on this cake will be my completion of James Joyce's Ulyssess, which I am planning to seriously attempt this year.

Here's to an Irish bookventure. Books to be listed soon.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Indian Reads

When you go from one I (India) to another I(Ireland), it doesn't take much imagination to assume that my reads planned for this year would include Indian authors, Indian topics and books set in my homeland. The quest this year is to read as much as I can in this regard but given my miserable performance in this regard in the previous years, I shall restrict my goal to 10 books.

The icing on the Indian cake would be the completion of a Tamil book, which is long pending. I might just go the audio way as my reading speed is abysmal (shamefully so..)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Audio challenge

I haven't really been a great lover of audio books but my recent long plane journey taught me just how good an audio book can be. And ever since, I am in love. So in keeping with this newfound love and in order to prove to myself that I am quite the diverse reader (?) that I say I am, I am planning to listen to at least 10 audios this year.. one of which is definitely a Tamil one! :)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments January

January sees me enter GR with a literal bang after a break of nearly 10 months. Suddenly, it isn't enough for me to just create this thread and read books but I have the urge, one I will describe as being similar to withdrawal symptoms that addicts experience (although I have lived without it for months and according to all gurus, I should be able to live without it), to joining challenges.

Challenges have always been a part of my GR life and last year I had taken a complete break from them wanting to get the addiction out of my system. However, the break last year only made me want to join all the challenges that were available this year and that would really make me go dizzy with happiness.

I went to my favourite group for challenges and lo and behold, there were many to suit my needs. I literally went challenge crazy but then restrained myself a bit. Now in the light of the day, I have to see whether restraint worked or craziness did! ;)
