stan (stanthewiseman) | 20 comments Hi
Read Catch 22, when it first came out. t is supposed to be a classic?
Well maybe I was to young. But I really do not want to reread it.

message 4: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2769 comments I've only read two of your list, Catch 22 and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Quite a variety.

message 5: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Well, one thing that definitely be said for me is that I read pretty widely!

Catch 22 was hard going for the first half at least but was worth the effort for the second half bu tI can well understand your feelings Stan. It was for my book group so I made the effort, not so sure I would've otherwise.

I enjoyed it too Yvonne, I got a bit impatient towards the end though - the final scenes seemed a bit too long but that could be attributable to my nature rather than the book!

I'm the same as Bill....only read Catch-22 and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo off your list. Must investigate some of the others. Catch 22 remains one of my favourite books - must be over 30 years since I read it, but characters still memorable.

Major Major.. loved him.. :0) It's probably been the same amount of time for me Ian. You were 5 or 6 when you read it too?

Flatter ye not Bill! About 17 I think - it's on my "spotty teenage years" shelf and Major Major major surely??

message 10: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments I'd particularly recommend A Single Man, there was so much I admired about this novella and can be read in one evening (unlike the books I'm reading at the moment which are going to take weeks if not, months)

I think I read 'Catch 22' too young. I'd just left school and the cynicism just depressed me, I didn't laugh much. I think I might get more out of it now that I'm a bit more weathered & cynical myself....

So if you're cynical and weathered, you'll find it cheerful?.. ;0)

Exactly, I'd hope to get the humour second time around! Sadly, I gave my copy away a while ago, so I won't be able to put it to the test immediately. Might get a copy from the library if/when the genre challenge reaches 'war'....

message 14: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2769 comments Speaking of genre challenges, have we sorted out April yet?

It's currently neck and neck between sci-fi/dystopia & biography/memoir. So anyone who hasn't voted yet had better do it this week......

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Just about to collect Miss Chopsticks by Xinran from the library.

message 20: by Susan (new)

Susan I loved this book, Em, and plan to read another of her books for my X.
Hope you enjoy it.

I loved this book too - enjoy!

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Thanks Lynne, will start it on Monday!

Are you going to start another one when you complete this one??

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3121 comments Ian wrote: "Are you going to start another one when you complete this one??"

We could do a to z of book titles!

message 28: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Maybe... it's going to take me a while to get to Y and Z but I like that idea Lynne!

message 29: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Wow, you're doing really well - I just keep coming across same initials!

message 30: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments I've been at this for ages Helen!!! Like you, for ever reading writers with the same initials...

Just Z left - have you got anything in mind Em?

message 34: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Yep, have read page 1 of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón today!

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3121 comments Em wrote: "Yep, have read page 1 of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón today!"

Oh well done Em! I do hope you are now a bit further than page one now! Really enjoyed the book myself.

message 36: by Dave (new)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments Lynne have you read the Prequel An Angels Game? Not as good as Shadow but its an interesting read.

No, no yet but will look out for it on my next charity shop wander!

message 40: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Stand out books for me were The Crimson Petal and the White, A Single Man, Cutting for Stone and The Shadow of the Wind.

I was under-whelmed by On the Road and The Shack which both fell way below my expectations.

message 41: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I didn't like the Shack, I tried to read it but I just couldn't keep going. There are only about 5 books I haven't finished.

message 42: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments It was tempting to ditch it but like you, that is against my nature! I also find it impossible to give a one star rating hence, it got two.

message 43: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments The other book I gave up on (but still contains a book mark) was Historian. Two books within months.

message 44: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Ahhh, couple of people at my book group agree with you there. I really enjoyed the book over-all but even I skimmed some sections ie. those pages of historical documents which I didn't feel added much to the experience of the novel.

message 45: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments On paper it was ideal for me - history, vampires. I just found it so dull. Then I'd think ooh something is going to happen but it didn't.
