Eight years ago Lily Swanson left Havashaw County with a broken heart. Now circumstances have brought her back to the cowboy who still drives her crazy. Seeing him again stirs erotic memories, but the pain of his betrayal refuses to be soothed with a sexy smile.
Lily left him. That inescapable fact drives Thor Hanson to succeed more than any other. Her return to Havashaw triggers anger, lust and regret, but when she reveals the truth behind her leaving, he's determined to rein her in and show her that what they have is more than a memory.
Neither can deny their passion, as untamable as the broncs Thor trains. But will it be enough, and can Thor convince Lily she's right where she belongs?
Untamable by Becca Dale was something of a surprise. I usually don't go in for contemporary romance, little lone romances based around cowboys but, this novel truly captivated me. The world building and characterization was spot on, creating characters that were complex and seemed to leap to life from the very pages. The atmosphere was vividly created and while this story was short, and I do mean short, that didn't prevent it from being an emotional roller coaster that perfectly mirrored the unpredictability of a bucking bronc.
The atmosphere was definitely what captured me from the get go. The wonderful little details, right down to the smell of the charity rodeo, brings the little town of Havashaw to life with great little nuances that give it substance. I mean, where else do you see not only the visual side of the world explored, but the textures of sight, smell and sound. This added a three dimensional aspect that I really loved. There was also something of a hopeful air about the story as young love and past hurts simmer below a seemingly calm surface. But, like any good rodeo, the tension that rages is full of passion and stubbornness making the world become even more dynamic and emotional then at first glance.
The personalities of the characters' is definitely another aspect that I really enjoyed about this novel. Dale did a wonderful job capturing the cocky, arrogance of cowboy Thor 'Thunder' Hanson and the stubbornness he possesses born of pure male domination. After being injured in a bronc riding competition in his youth, his ego took a severe hit and the loss of Lily only added severe insult to injury. Of course Lily shares in that heartache tinged with the bitter edge of betrayal unable to see passed her hurt to the truth behind nothing more then a misunderstanding. When she returns to the town of Havashaw all these years later her worry, pain and love come crashing back on her. But, where these two are perfectly matched is in their pride. Neither is willing to bend to the other, but where Lily fails for me is her inability to fight for what she wants. Years ago she allowed the love of her life to slip through her fingers simply because she was too wrapped up in her pride to fight for Thor. Now, years later, she's still nursing her wounds unwilling or unable to fight for the man that obviously is crazy about her. But, where I couldn't fault her was that Thor never made his feelings clear, but being a cowboy, and an extremely cocky one at that, is that so surprising? Actions tend to speak louder then words, but these two definitely needed to learn the art of communication!
The relationship between these two is pretty complex as well despite the shortness of the story. The underlying sexual tension and just plain fear that runs between the two is certainly something that sucks you in to the story and these characters' lives. You end up finding yourself rooting for Thor, despite his high handedness, and wanting to smack Lily upside the head for being too weak to accept her own feelings as she nurses her wounded pride, always eager to run away to the safety of seclusion. There is also quite a bit of spice between these two resulting in some really hot, passionate scenes that were befitting of a rough-and-tumble cowpoke and his woman.
The writing was great, perfectly capturing the scenes and characters as well as being extremely fluid. The plot was well conceived with nice attention to detail leaving my only wish that this had been longer. More development would have been nice because I would have liked to see these two characters more deeply explored. Their relationship was complex and the history between them also would have been nice to see a bit more of. There were definitely a lot of things that I would have liked to see, but considering the story is only a little over seventy pages this is far more in depth then I would have thought possible creating a captivating connection within only a few pages.
Overall, this was a great read with characters that I enjoyed reading about. And while I would have liked to see 'more', there was nothing minimalistic about this story as it was intense, passionate and extremely sexy.
With this sexy “bad-boy, cowboy” as our main character (Thor, AKA Thunder as he is known in the arena) Untamable only makes the attraction all the more sweeter! Becca Dale does an excellent job of compounding a whole lot of “spice and sizzle” into a short story.
Who doesn't love a stetson wearing, wounded hero who is determined to show everyone he is still champion? Apparently long-time sweetheart Lily still does, even if she has been away in Chicago for over eight years nursing her broken heart. Childhood sweethearts who finally connect again after years apart...well these types of stories always stir my heart and Becca Dale did a great job of supplying us with the back-story details. The added smoking love scenes? Just icing on this delicious cake.
When Lily returns to her hometown, she is immediately distraught to discover her long-ago heartthrob is about to ride the very bronc that caused his terrible accident eight years prior that also ultimately caused their separation. When these two finally have words what ignites is a blazing fire, leading us into a scorching love-story that will keep you engrossed until the very end. Can over-confident and slightly arrogant cowboy Thor win back his cautious Lily for keeps? I recommend reading this spicy romance to see for yourself.
This is the first story I have ever read of Becca Dale's and I found myself enjoying this story more than I originally thought I might. I am a selfish reader, always hoping the short story might be longer or more detailed, but I soon discovered that Becca is a really good writer and she does the “short story” justice. She managed to make this reader care about her characters in only a few pages.
I wish she had more time to expand on Lily's reasons for leaving Thor after his rodeo accident. I do not think I wanted to take it at face value that she was hurt because he demanded that she leave the hospital room. I would have liked to see if she could have fought harder if some-other circumstances might not have been in play. I think this would have endeared us to Lily's character more if this had been expanded on, however I say again, Ms. Dale did a good job of covering as much history as she could in such few written words.
I loved that we could feel a wide range of emotions in this tale which made it easier to quickly connect with all of the players involved. The secondary characters were also loveable and intriguing. These combinations make for a very entertaining read. I would have no problem recommending this story to my reading group or my friends. I read it from start to finish in one setting and I must say, I am really looking forward to reading future stories written by the author.
So gals, are you “hankering” for a wild cowboy ride with plenty of heat? Well “shucks ma'am” pull up your Stetson and settle down with Untamable. What can I say?.... Cowboys! Yummmmmm!!!!
Lily is back from Chicago to visit her best friend Mara. They've planned to visit the old haunts, spend some time with Mara's parents. Just as long as they avoid Mara's brother, and Lily's former boyfriend, Thor. But Lily isn't even in town a day before they cross paths, and it's like a knife in the chest. Years ago, when Thor had his accident, he forced Lily out of his hospital room, out of the hospital, and out of his life. She took the hint and left, but even now, she still feels connected to him. And she's not the only one. Can Thor convince her to stay, or is that love just a distant memory?
Sometimes it's hard to review a novella, because there's so little of it - especially when I want more. I want more angst! I want more arguments that end up in stolen kisses! I want more Thor and Lily! But alas, there is no more - but "Untamable" definitely had a good run. A good reunion story with a happy (and steamy!) ending is something everyone can enjoy now and again, or in my case.. more now than again. For being only 73 pages, author Becca Dale packs a lot of punch into Thor and Lily's tale - the misunderstandings, the bullheadedness that comes when one has to face something they've been trying to avoid - it's all there in spades. And it was a treat finding out how Lily and Thor dealth with all that and more.
I wasn't a fan of Thor's nickname for Lily - "Peace Lily" - but I'm fairly positive that was because I didn't know it was an actual plant until about five minutes ago. Now that I know, I don't think it's so bad, cute even. But despite Thor's interesting nicknames, he was by far my favorite. I always do fall for the wounded hero - and Thor was that, literally and figuratively. He's the type of guy I would love to tease and get teased by in return, and I was happy with how his and Lily's story ended.
Fans of erotic short stories, especially ones featuring bullheaded cowboys, should check out "Untamable."
Rating: FOUR out of FIVE (4/5). Good, enjoyable novella. I liked the characters, and I there was a significant amount of development, especially considering how short the story was. Definitely a fast, fun read.
You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the cowboy she left behind out of the girl’s heart.
A misunderstanding and deliberate mislead broke two young lovers apart. Now all Lily wants is to forget the cowboy who broke her heart and all Thor wants is to forget the fiery redhead who left him when he needed her most.
Eight years after going their separate ways, Lily and Thor find themselves face to face once again. All of the old feelings that lay dormant are fiercely brought back to the surface, but the memories of their last moments together ultimately bring the walls back up between them. Their physical attraction to each other only increases upon sight of the more grown up bodies they now possess yet emotionally they are still the teens they used to be. Confusing and frustrating they find themselves not being able to stay away from each other and worse they still care.
Ms. Dale wrote a very hot contemporary cowboy tale of young love and loss. Both characters are stubborn and passionate, so they stand on equal footing in that regard which makes them a perfect match. Thor's nickname for Lily only made me fall for him more and he proves that for some men their true feelings speak from their actions not words.
The story charges right out of the bucking shoot and keeps a nice pace throughout with just enough detailing to get the readers imagination going. Once you start, you'll find this intense and incredibly sexy read hard to put down, but beware it'll leave you wanting to go find a cowboy of your own!

My Review: UNTAMABLE is a short novella that packs a pretty big romantic punch. One of my favorite type of romantic plots is that of the couple that breaks up, then finds their way back together after both mature a little, and perhaps figure out what they want out of the relationship. This is that type of book. Becca Dale starts the story off with the two main characters, Lily and Thor sharing space again after a disastrous break-up where misunderstanding and misconception play a big part.
What drew me into the story is the amount of emotion that Dale wrote for both characters. Both of them have never really given up their feelings for the other, even while thinking that the other person was at fault for the heartbreak. And, while much of their attraction is shown in sexual terms, I liked how there actually was a discussion about the misunderstanding that had led them up to the point. And also, how both characters had to share the blame; Lily for walking away without a fight, and Thor for being young and stupid.
UNTAMABLE was a good spicy read that was infused with sexual attraction, as well as soul-deep love. The story of Thor and Lily played out in a well-paced manner, and never felt rushed or abrupt. The end left me feeling that I had been privy to a peek at a small portion of the two characters lives. Can I say how much I loved the rodeo setting?!
4.5/5 for plot 4/5 for characters 3.5/5 for language
Tough cowboys, rejected love, childhood friends, steamy sex scenes that sizzle the pages - this little story has it all! A quick little read for that cowboy fix!
Lily Swanson once thought herself in love with Thor Hanson, bronc rider extraordinaire! One day after an injury that puts him in the hospital, Thor, better known as Thunder, tells Lily to go away and she does. She takes her broken heart to Chicago and forms a new life for herself.
Now it’s eight years later and Lily is back for a visit to her best friend Mara, and to support a charity rodeo raising funds for a sick little girl. Thor is slated to ride in the bucking event, first time since the injury that left him with a permanent limp 8 years ago, and he’s riding Lightening - the same horse that injured him. As can be expected, Lily and Thor meet up and the whole small town is waiting to see what happens to them this time around!
I like this short sexy story. It has tough and sexy cowboys, buckle bunnies, unrequited love and rodeo in those sweltering days of August. Lily and Thor have a history that got interrupted in the middle and needs to have a finish put on it. The author does a great job, in not many pages, of outlining the history that binds all these characters together. She does an outstanding job of painting the scene at the rodeo with enough clarity that you can almost taste the dust! One tough cowboy works to find a way to keep his lifetime love from leaving him again.
Pick up this book to give you your cowboy fix. It’s a quick and sensual read!
If you can pull your eyes away from the cover you will find a short, very spicy read by Becca Dale. Lily and Thor have a past. A past that was a good one until Thor had an accident and said something stupid.
Up until it is revealed why Lily ran off on Thor, you could like him. He is exactly how a cowboy should be. He's all manly and a touch bit arrogant. He risks his life to help a child, while endangering his own by riding a horse that nearly crippled him years back.
Death wish? Possibly.
Lily is a little harder to like. She ran off without a fight when she loved someone and then stayed away for 8 years? I wanted to smack her quite a bit. However, once I found out the backstory on Thor's accident, I wanted to smack him. Rodeo circuit or not his behavior was pretty out of line.
Yet these two manage to fall back into bed together for some pretty steamy....glass of ice water for the reader sex. Sex is really what pulls them back together yet there is obviously love on both of their parts. I really wished this were longer than it was, because I would have liked to have really known what made Thor and Lily tick.
Becca wrapped things up nicely for the pair, giving them the happily ever after, you know they are going to get, but you did feel like there should be more.
Untamable grabbed my attention by the title alone. Becca Dale really grabbed my attention with this hometown read. I enjoyed how packed this novella was and feeling as if I was there in the family and at the venue watching what was going on.
Poor Lily was dealt a hard blow at a young tender age that jaded her toward men and loving. At that age there was no way to discern ‘go away’ from ‘get the fuck away’ from a prideful hurt male. Thor I wanted to clobber. I love male pride in small doses; he did a whammy of a dose in the beginning and didn’t exactly learn from it.
When they met again, boy did those sparks fly enough to burn through my reader. I found myself thinking ‘oh my’, and waiting for flying parts or fists. Instead wouldn’t you know rage and hurt led into a hot sexual encounter.
Would he learn from his past or would he tempt fate again for the sake of pride?
Watching the two moving forward made my day. Throw in groupie females and the need for self reinvention and it can lead to disaster, unless you have the right woman at your side.
I loved Untamable and hearing Thor get handled by his boys into taming his woman. It fit. The man who wasn’t scared of anything was deathly afraid of losing his heart to someone who’d loved him forever.
Becca has done it for me again with Untameable. Her character building is spot on, the chemistry between hero and heroine sizzling, and I was nearly salivating during the lusty love scenes. All right, salivating isn’t the correct term, but I think you catch my drift here without causing too much offense.
Cowboys are just plain hot, and throw in some dirty lovin’ and you got yourself a story, but Becca throws in her special pizzazz that makes this work unique. You’ll fall in love with the characters, and by the end you’ll be sorry to say goodbye to them.
