Her story collections- Parinde Kaa Intezar Sa Kuchh, Jinki Mutthiyon Me Surakh Tha, Ibtida Ke Aage Khali Hi, and Novel- Shudhhipatra have been praised by literary critics.
Her latest novel Khela is acclaimed for its powerful narration and language. The novel is a cartography of structures of power, politics of oil, international conflicts, and above all shades of resistance of an ordinary individual. Khela won O.P. Malviya Bharti Devi Samman 2021, KLF Book Award 2021, and Valley of Words Award 2022.

I heard about this book from a friend. Then read this book also. Reading this book was so fascinating that after that I searched and read all the books of the author and was amazed. It's a different world, a completely different level and range. Highly recommended for those who are in search of something new and classic

पुस्तक बोरिंग हो/समझ न आए तब भी मैं किसी पुस्तक को आधा-अधूरा पढ़कर नहीं छोड़ता; एक लालच या उम्मीद होती है कि अंत तक शायद कुछ काम का मिल ही जाएगा।
400 पेज के इस नॉवेल को भी सिर्फ इसी वजह से पढ़ पाया।
पुस्तक जब अपने अंत के आसपास थी तब लेखिका ने सीधे-सादे वाक्यों में कुछ-कुछ लिखा है जिससे इतना पता चल पाया कि 400 पेजेज में वे क्या कहना चाहती थीं।
अलग ढंग से लिखने की इच्छा से ऐसे नॉवेल उत्पन्न होते हों या फिर मेरा दिमाग इस स्तर के नॉवेल को grasp करने लायक नहीं हुआ है। पढ़ने के बाद भी इसे समझने की कोशिश में मैं कई रिव्यु/आलोचना पढ़ लिया; Alas! वे भी समझ नहीं आए।

इस उपन्यास ने मेरी हिंदी किताबों को लेकर सोच ही बदल दी। एक समय तक मैं जैनेंद्र, अज्ञेय, कुर्अतुल ऐन हैदर के उपन्यासों का दीवाना था। फिर धीरे धीरे हिन्दी पढ़ना कम होता गया। बीच में कुछ सालों में हिंदी की चर्चित किताबें जिनका नाम काफी सुनता था, वो पढ़ी तो बहुत ही निराशा हुई। 2021 में किताबों की एक पुरानी दुकान में अरसे बाद गया था और मुराकामी की नई किताब ढूँढ़ रहा था। दुकान के मालिक से पुराना परिचय था और वे खुद भी किताबों के शौकीन हैं, वे अचानक से बोले कि नीलाक्षी सिंह का नया उपन्यास आया है। देखा आपने। मैंने तो नाम ही पहली बार सुना था तो क्या कहता, पर वे तारीफ करने लगे खूब। कुछ उनका दबाव और यह जताने को कि मैं कद्र करता हूँ हिंदी किताबों की, मैंने बिन ज्यादा सोचे किताब ले ली कि चलो इसे भी देख लेते हैं। पर साल भर किताब यूँ ही घर पर पड़ी रही। कुछ महीने भर पहले ही बिन ज्यादा उम्मीद के यह किताब उठाई। शुरू के कुछ पन्ने पढ़कर चौंका और फिर उसके बाद तो किताब ने हिलाकर ही रख दिया। मैंने आज तक हिंदी में ऐसा उपन्यास नहीं पढ़ा था। मुझे लगता था कि हिंदी में घटनाओं, मुद्दों को लेकर ही सुन्दर सजी संवरी कहानियाँ लिखी जाती हैं पर ऐसी भाषा और मनोविज्ञान तो मेरी कल्पना से परे था। वर्जिनिया वूल्फ से लेकर मार्केज तक सब कुछ रिवाइज करवा दिया इस किताब ने। इतना सुन्दर और इतना गहरा उपन्यास है यह। मुझे नहीं पता कि कैसे बताऊँ कि क्या कमाल का उपन्यास है यह। मैंने अब इनकी सब किताबें इकट्ठी करनी शुरू की हैं। और जो सबक ख़ुद को मिला है वही बाकी पाठकों को देना चाहूंगा कि जब तक ऐसे उपन्यास लिखे जाते रहेंगे हिंदी साहित्य का गौरव बना रहेगा। लेकिन ऐसी किताबें हम तक लिट् फेस्ट्स, यूट्यूब, इंस्टाग्राम, अखबारों की लिस्ट्स से निकल कर नहीं आएगी, हमें ही ढूंढ़कर उन तक पहुंचना होगा।

One morning, while watching a program on Doordarshan,the legendary Hindi critic Namvar Singh extolled Neelakshi Singh's genius, likening her craftsmanship to that of Nirmal Verma. Namvar Singh's praise, echoing my own sentiments, reaffirmed her unparalleled poetic finesse, meticulous detailing, and profound insights.
As time passed, the responsibilities of life diminished my leisurely reading habits. However, determined to reignite that passion, I recently embarked on a journey to revisit Neelakshi's literary world, reducing my time spent on social media. I was thrilled to discover her latest novel! Over the past month, I have immersed myself in its pages, rediscovering the indescribable magic that only great literature can evoke. This masterpiece is a testament to her extraordinary talent—a true work of art that leaves me speechless. I wholeheartedly recommend this gem to anyone craving profound literary experiences in Hindi.

Tarantino has said he hears and writes dialog as music. There is a rhythm and flow he is reaching for, which determines the specific words he selects to achieve that.
Negative QT critics complain how unrealistic it is. That real people don't talk like that, etc. Well my friends, Shakespeare was the same. It's a S.T.Y.L.E.
Some Hindi critics encountered a common issue when attempting to deconstruct this novel – feeling betrayed by the testimony of its sentences. It appears they were anticipating a one-dimensional truth, yet the language transcends their dimensions. Labeling the complexity of both language and plot as a "stupid complaint" is unwarranted. Instead, consider this work a pure artistic achievement for the Hindi language. If you still find this masterpiece complex, approach it as a learning experience, much like attending university. Embrace the role of a student rather than pretending to be a professor.

After recently delving into an interview with Booker Prize Awardee Geetanjali Shree, I was struck by her recommendation of Neelakshi Singh as a contemporary South Asian writer deserving of recognition and translation. Intrigued, I picked up Neelakshi's work, "Khela," and was immediately enraptured. The book unfolded like a masterpiece, its language captivating, its plot enthralling, and its portrayal of the human psyche profound. In the realm of contemporary world literature, few authors exhibit such mastery over their craft. Neelakshi Singh emerges as a hidden genius, and "Khela" stands as a must-read gem, showcasing her unparalleled talent.
