It counts if I almost finished it, right? I was very close to the finish line and that means I can rate it, right? Right? Lol
Not a bad book at all if you like a lot of action, gore, torture, attempted rape, trauma, bad bad villains, insta love, a crazy group of brothers and their grumpy leader with a heart of gold. It was enjoyable but the romance was meh because the insta love was too in your face and did not feel natural. They get together really early in the book and to be honest action and murder aren’t enough to keep me interested in a (ironically) romance book.

You ever get the feeling the author writes their dialogue around quips and catch phrases instead of letting them come naturally? That's this book.

Also, how are you gonna give me a murderer and then give me the most boring sex on the planet?

Now this is a holiday book I can get behind. All the excitement and action that keeps me glued to the pages of any other Davidson book, with the added smidgen of holidays.
I really did enjoy this. I like Mason and Gabe and how they develop together. The action, the plots, the other characters; everything meshes into a cohesive and quite riveting story.

I had not read the short story that this was based on, so I was excited to read this expanded version. It was definitely right up my alley (i.e. possessive killer who is drawn to a naive but sassy character). Mason was a book store clerk who went out with his bestie JJ. While there, Mason was attacked. Mysterious Gabe and his brothers rescued Mason but didn’t know what to do with him. The Saint brothers were fascinating characters and I was definitely intrigued by their back story. Gabe was a grade A asshole for the first few chapters and I didn’t really warm up to him until a quarter of the way through. I would have liked to have seen more romance, but the mystery took up a good portion of the story. I am very excited to see more of the Saint brothers especially Shep and JJ (who I assume the next book will be about). Great beginning to a new series!

I received an ARC copy for my honest review

I liked this one a lot. Kind of reminded me of the Necessary Evils book - the first one I think. It’s been a while. Anyway, I didn’t want to stop reading and that’s been a rare feeling for me with the books I’ve been reading lately.

I absolutely loved this novella when this author wrote it for the anthology O Deadly Night. But now that it’s been expanded upon…chef’s kiss! Mason is orphaned as a young child, and taken in by JJ and his family. They are best friends, but get tangled up with the Saint brothers. The brothers are all about revenge and vengeance, and you better stay out of their way. Gabe and Mason hit it off. They balance each other out perfectly. I can’t wait for more!

I wanted to be tangled up in Mason for the rest of my days, and so I vowed to myself to make that happen. - Gabe

Warnings: Violence, Torture, Attempted SA, Child Abuse Mentioned

Main Character Information:
Mason: 5’4”, Brown hair and eyes, Works at Books & Bistro,
Gabe: Gabriel, Brown hair and dark eyes, Saint Brother

My Ratings:
Spice: 2/5
Angst/Stress: 2.75/5
Fluff: 1/5
Structure/Format/Flow: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

Intimate/Spicy Moments Include:

Stuff I Want To Mention:
Positives: After an MC went through major trauma, sex was not seen as a fix all to their problems. Gabe had good character development, Mason was good for him. In the Epilogue, Mason got . Most stories act like everything is all of a sudden fine so I liked this.
Negatives: If you are in it for the spice, it could have been spicier both heat level and kink/variation wise. I would have enjoyed learning a little more about the other brothers but it was still nice the way it was done.
Favorite/Most Impacted By Scene: Chapter 23 *sob* Ugh, my heart. I knew it was going to come eventually.

Notable Side Characters:
JJ:
Noel:
Nick:
Angel:
Shep:

This man, someone I’d once feared, was now the person I most cherished, needed, and very much wanted. - Mason

It can be safely assumed all of my reviews are from books that are 1st Person, have a HEA, and have no intimate or spicy scenes with anyone/thing other than MC(s). I try to rate books objectively if they have something I don’t typically like (i.e. Break Ups, SA, 3rd Person, Single POV, Sharing Partners). If it’s still written well the author deserves the praise but I will make note to avoid for myself in the future. I do my best to mark different triggers/warnings as well as the intimate acts performed in case anything listed/done might not be something you would want to read. If M/M, Age Play, Interspecies, Insta Love, Erotica, MPreg, or Incest are something you actively avoid, you are probably better off avoiding most of the books I review.

DNF: Something off, couldn’t finish because of it. Maybe me, maybe the book.
1 Star: Just.. Just no, thanks. Do not recommend it. Need mind eraser.
2 Stars: Oh that was something, but it was not something for me.
3 Stars: Decent, enjoyed enough. Hit marks it was supposed to. Might recommend.
4 Stars: Really enjoyed it, better than I thought it would be. Would recommend.
5 Stars: I can see myself reading this again. Thoroughly enjoyed. Would recommend.

When I started this book I didn't know for sure what to expect, other than the fact that I have enjoyed Davidson King's other books. I wasn't expecting the feel good found family moments, nor the love that was poignant across the pages of this story.

Yes, it was full of vile people who hurt others, and took advantage of their positions in the town they lived in; but it was also full of revenge, redemption, found family, and most importantly love. And I don't just mean love between the two MC's, I mean love between the brothers, the love JJ and Mason share, along with the love and care that eventually develops between all of the brothers and JJ and Mason. They became a family, and while the way they met wasn't great, they still gave each other a chance. They let themselves get to know one another without the rumors completely clouding their opinions.

I have so many things I could share about this book, like the writing for example. The pacing of this book was truly fantastic, it kept you wondering what was going to happen next, or if one of the characters you're going to get attached to is going to get hurt. I also found the pacing great because while Gabe and Mason had chemistry from the get-go their relationship did slowly develop, it wasn't insta-love. Which I enjoyed, I really liked watching all of the bonds and connections form between all of these men. Now onto the characters! All of the brothers were great, the way Davidson wrote their characters, you could feel the bond, love, and protectiveness they all have for one each other coming right through the pages. JJ and Mason's characters were also great and well written. And even though I despise the evil men and women who are in this book, they were well written also.

Andrew and Heather's characters were a pleasant surprise, I did not expect them to be what they ended up being. If you want to know what I'm referring to, you'll have to read the book yourself. Or else it will spoil the story for you.

While this book was full of tragedy, loss, grief, anger, abuse, and.. murder. It was also full of happiness, love, healing, and making the most of what you've got. These men were brought together by death and tragedy, but they didn't let that tear them down. They helped hold each other up and created a family all of them are proud to be apart of.

I truly hope you read this book yourself, I couldn't recommend it enough. Also, I'm really hoping Shep's story is next!

Slay Ride was a real surprise for me, I was so invested

Rating: 4.5🌈

I have to admit that early on, my thoughts were that Slay Ride was just one more story about a group of psycho revenge killing brothers, a trope gaining popularity in LGBTQIA romance. The elements haven’t varied enough, 5 brothers, killing, torture, etc, so that only one or two authors have made it really fascinating.

But Slay Ride turns into something else that is side adjacent but still makes this storyline its own. The brothers here have a compelling history that King eventually weaves further into a larger plot line that gives the characters and this book a different feel and direction emotionally.

King does surprise me with the choices that are made narratively with the romances and themes. Mason, a vulnerable man whose attack begins the novel, starts a sexual relationship immediately with Gabe, one of the brothers. For me, that was problematic. Except that King starts to roll it back with more focus on the actual storyline, action, and finally, when Mason’s deep trauma over his ordeal surfaces, the real need for just contact and then therapy is recognized.

King has an Authors note at the beginning stating that this fiction is perhaps more in a gray area, than that of actually being dark fiction. After reading this, that’s pretty accurate. Any discussion of childhood trauma, sexual abuse, assault is off page, left to the reader’s mind, as well as any real torture is along those same lines.

I have included King’s trigger warnings below.

Slay Ride was a real surprise for me. It took my narrative expectations and gave them a great twist with the characters and plot. I connected with all the characters, I found myself invested in the multiple storylines, and, although I could have wished for a worse ending for the villains, I was satisfied with that ending.

Now I’m wondering if the next book will feature all of them or just one couple. Either way, I’ll be there to find out.

This is a definite yes !

I loved this story when it was part of an anthology last year, and boy do I love the full-length story even more! Davidson King always builds worlds worth reading, and the men who make up those worlds are always swoon-worthy. And the fact that it’s the first book in a new series is the cherry on top!
Mason is a man just living his life to the best of his ability, not really a people person, keeping his head down and bothering no one. His BFF talks him into going out one night, and he’s attacked by a group of men who he knows isn’t going to leave him alive. He’s suddenly saved by the hot guy he just met in a bar, and four others, and before passing out from a head wound, he witnesses one of his “saviors” murder one of his attackers. When he comes to in a strange place and sees the hot guy from the bar, Gabe, he realizes he may still be in danger of losing his life after witnessing the murder one of his attackers. Mason panics and runs, thus starting a game of cat and mouse between him, the police, and the five men who saved his life. Things are not as they seem, and Mason learns the bad guys may be the good guys, and the so-called good guys are so much more to fear than anything he’s encountered so far. Will the spark that started at their bar encounter ignite into a flame between Mason and Gabe? Can Mason trust Gabe to do the right thing, and to keep him safe? What IS the right thing to do? Will everyone they care about make it out alive? And the biggest question of all, is a happily ever after even possible for Mason and Gabe if they do make it out alive? I highly recommend this book. It has murder and mayhem, and a plot I didn’t see coming the first time I read it, and even more surprises in the full-length version!

Davidson King is one of those authors that you just fall in love with their talent. She has a way of pulling you in with her written word and character creation. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. I was engaged by the story of Mason, Gabe, JJ, and the rest of the Saint brothers from the beginning of page one.

“Slay Ride” is no different, but also, extremely different. Something about the strength behind Gabe felt different than her normal main characters. Gabe had a villain arc about him that made him darker. While Mason played the opposite with an innocence about him.

Mason has dealt with a lot of trauma in distant and not so distant past that add depth of character. Although, his trauma is there he’s still allowed to be the innocent victim “hiding in the closet” when his scared and unsure or “crying in the shower” when his brain tells him to take a break. Mason becomes a strong character to support Gabe in his need for revenge and redemption.

This book was broke up into three parts, beginning first with Mason’s POV, then switching to Gabe’s POV, and ending with mixed POVs of Mason and Gabe. With that being said, the beginning of part three with Mason’s POV nearly broke me, I felt so deeply for Mason’s pain.

And I’ll leave you with the best book lovers line out of the whole book: “What more did a person need besides books, food, coffee, and comfy couches to read on? Nothing.” (King 2023, Kindle Loc 83).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/6.
🌶️🌶️/5.

* I read an arc of this book. *

This arc came exactly when i needed it. This is very much Davidson's style. It was quick, sweet and easy story. It had its dark moments but the characters themselves are good at heart and kind even if they don't seem like it.
I loved Gabe. At first he seemed like a dubious character with some mu**derous tendencies but very quickly you see behind the mask and this extends to his brothers too.
This group is great, it just so happens that they have a questionable, grey mission to complete and Mason and JJ, Mason's BF, are going along.
I loved Mason and the way he viewed the world/humans. #relatable almost every day 🙈
Some stuff happened that put him in Gabe's path however they would end up meeting sooner or later.
I loved how Gabe dealt with everything that happened but also the way he helped Mason in every way he could to help him heal from what happened.
I liked the friendship Mason and JJ developed with the rest of the brothers and I hope to see more of it in the future. I very much hope that Shep & JJ's story is next cuz Shep is a big, squishy guy and I want his story. Basically I think everyone in this story, including the young teens, should get their stories eventually. The younger one could have a full story cuz that would be interesting and the girl can have a side story but either way I just wanna see them happy.

I enjoyed this dark story which had love, family and removing corrupt officials on the way. I loved the friendship between Mason and JJ as well as the relationship between Gabe and Mason. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

I did like much of the story; however, I didn't buy the romance part of it. So, instead of this being a romantic suspense novel, it is more of a suspense novel with a bit of insta-love and sex thrown in. Basically, this is an antihero story where the antagonists are corrupt elected officials and police officers. The story is very dark and does discuss such things as the torture of children. The protagonists are vigilantes.

While I generally do like this author's novels and have read quite a few of them, I feel the need to point out a mistake that this novel and rather a lot of other books make: assuming that quotes found on quote-collection websites are accurate. Very often, they're not.

This book contains three unsourced quotes.

The quote attributed to Paul Gauguin is correct (Avant et Après, 1923 English translation, page 18).

The quote attributed to Albert Einstein is a loose paraphrase (apparently of recent origin). What he actually said, translated into English, is that Pablo Casals "clearly recognized that the world is more threatened by those who tolerate or encourage evil than by the evildoers themselves." ("Conversations with Casals" by Josep Maria Corredor, 1957 English translation, page 11).

However, the quote attributed to Kahlil Gibran is false. That quote is actually from "Discourses on the Beatitudes" by Edwin Hubbell Chapin (1853 edition, page 36).

Slay Ride is the first book in a new series by Davidson King. Last year's O Deadly Night charity anthology contained the seeds for this novel. I am so glad the author expanded it into a full novel (and a series).

Mason is a young man who was orphaned as a child and was taken into his best friend's, JJ, family. He grew up loved and financially secure. He has my dream job, working at a bookstore and bakery/cafe combo. His favorite thing to do is snuggle up with blankets and read. He is perfect.

The Saint brothers crash into Mason's calm life and nothing is ever the same. The brothers have a very dark tale of horror and grief that they are still processing. They process it by killing the people who destroyed their family. It is like Santa's naughty list but longer and blood splattered. The story of how Mason joins the brothers and where they all end up is a fast-paced page-turning ride.

I enjoyed all the main characters. Mason and JJ are men trying to deal with an ugly world while maintaining who they are. The Saint brothers are morally ambiguous. That is what makes this story so interesting. The moral divide between the characters, how they initially interact with each other, and how they grow because of that interaction is very well done. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received an advance review copy from the author. After reading it, I wrote an honest review.

This is a well written tale of good verses evil where the good are a group of morally grey brothers seeking vengeance against those who are the epitome of all that is evil in the world - greed, corruption and so much more. Balanced against the darkness of that is the love that this found family has for each other despite the bickering and the usual sibling dynamics.
Gabe and Mason are brought together in unfortunate circumstances and it takes some time for Mason to see the man behind the mask that is Gabe. Mason and his friend JJ are soon entangled within the Saint Brothers family and find themselves involved in the drama and action as Gabe and co seek their vengeance.
I found this to be an interesting and enjoyable read with a great cast of main and secondary characters, plenty of action and drama which is perfectly balanced with the romance element, some sweet and some heat and a hard earned and well deserved HEA. There’s plenty of brothers needing their story told and I look forward to the next instalment and the rest of their stories.

I love dark romances, and this one didn’t disappoint. The characters are all so complex, and I mean all of them. It’s a very gripping storyline, and once you start reading it you won’t want it to end. Action, romance, sex, intrigue, jaw dropping, heartbreak, and mystery are the top words I would use to describe this book.

All of the characters are so well written that when you hear what happened to them to lead them down these paths, you just want to cry with them. And they all realize that their lives intersect in such dark and bloody ways, it makes you feel their anger and sadness also. These men are so misunderstood, and when the dust settles, they still come together to lift each other up.

Mason and Gabe are so cute and hot you start rooting for them from the get go. As soon as you realize the line Gabe uses on Mason when they first meet, you want to just laugh at the absurdity! These two have so much chemistry and empathy for each other. I can’t wait to read more of this series, and see who else gets a happy ever after.

Oh my, the Saint brothers are equal parts terrifying, sweet and hot!

In today’s episode of…sometimes a good person has to do bad things, you get Gabe and his brothers as they seek vengeance for their family. And along the way Mason and his BFF JJ get thrown into the mix.

Gabe and Mason meet in a very not cute way, but it has a lasting effect. Together they make an amazing team, who understand each other, and don’t judge. And I love their acceptance of their families in their lives. I also enjoy the tenderness between them, especially with the violence that surrounds them. That they can find those moments to connect and be loved.

Don’t get me wrong, this is dark and murderous, but there is love and the bad guys get what’s coming to them. So colour me happy!

There is nothing like a darn good found family story and Davidson truly gave us that and more. We have a group of five brothers out for vengeance. They are morally grey but they have good reasons. I loved all of them and the additional side characters.

We met Gabe and Mason in the 0 Holy Nights anthology and I couldn’t wait for more. They meet like a lot of young people do but what happens after that meeting is not what normally happens. They find themselves tired up in revenge, murder, loss of family, and so much more. Mason probably never expected to be as involved in this as he was. He has an amazing fun best friend JJ which I adored. See family stick together.

This was a great read and highly recommend it. There was some dark moments but sweet times, laughs and more to come with this family.

This is such a great story, Davidson King has such a unique way of grabbing the readers from the start and giving them a wild ride. Her world building and character development is fantastic.

This story lays the foundation of abuse, violence, tragedy and my my favorite revenge. Mason and Gabe has a great balance with their love story that really enhances the over all story arc.

The brothers are determined to seek revenge for the atrocities they endured meeting Mason and his BF JJ I felt gave them emotions I think all the brothers had forgotten. Needing to right the wrongs, getting the truth out there I felt the brothers needed these two so badly.

Gabe and Mason are such a great match, what I enjoyed was watching them fall for each other without that insta love. It felt real and honest.

Slay Ride was fantastic and I can't wait for more.

Brilliant new series from Davidson King. The expansion of this story from novella to full fledged novel adds so much depth and detail to an already fantastic story. I love how she creates a sexy romance filled story around characters drawn to the darker side of life. As I've come to expect from Davidson, the world building is detailed and enveloping. Her characters are engaging and embrace the darker shades of gray in the world. Gabe and Mason are an wonderful opposites attract couple insta love couple, that you immediately root for all the way through the story. Another Davidson King series that I highly recommend and encourage you to run off to your favorite eBook purchasing site and grab this first book in the Saint Brothers series. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

Mason lives a quiet life until he’s attacked one night and saved by the mysterious and dangerous Saint brothers. What starts as a rescue soon spirals into a chaotic, dangerous bond that challenges everything Mason thought he knew.

This was a great suspense read and got me completely hooked on the Saint Brothers. I’m diving into book two.

Slay Bells Ring

The family that slays together is amazing! I love morally ambiguous characters and the Saint Brothers are to die for. Add in Mason and JJ and you can’t go wrong. Mason and Gabe have a, let’s call it memorable, beginning that sets the unforgettable tone of this book. I loved it all!

“Mason had become my lighthouse in the never-ending storm that was my life.…I could be the same for him.”

Mason is a force of his own, and though my heart hurt for reasons you’ll understand, it was swoony and so much fun, watching Gabe fall for him and seek out his revenge. Does he succeed? Read it and find out but once you start you won’t put it down. I am absolutely in love with this family and can’t wait for more. I’m here for all the rides the Saint Brothers take us on.

What a ride! Davidson King has created the perfect blend of snark, sass, heat and action in Slay Ride.
I devoured this book in one sitting and loved it!
Mason and Gabe will grab your heart and not let go. These two have both suffered from the unspeakable actions of some truly horrendous people. When they meet it's like kindling sparking to a blaze! The chemistry and emotional connection between these two "damaged" souls is beautiful.
Add in a found family that is full of love and acceptance of each other and I am a happy reader.
The action will have you turning page after page trying to guess the outcome. The romance and love will have you swooning.
All I can say is give me more!
I'm so looking forward to the next Saint Brothers book!

Dark story but hard to put down.

Oh wow. Dark. You have the bad that is somewhat good. Then you have the very bad. These foster brothers were out for vengeance. Though they Syndrome did it around Christmas time. They had it all figured out. Then Mason tripped on them or rather Gab hit on Mason who then later saved from being assaulted. But was kidnapped by the brothers because Gabriel didn't want to give his new interest up. Q the fight or flight Syndrome. Mason had to get away. then all neck break loose and Mason has an apartment full if vengeful angels. Things are discovered about how his family may have died and everyone is now on the train. Plans are made and messed up. But people will die by the end of the year.

Davidson King at their best

When you are looking for an author to write morally gray characters with high paved action and unfathomable love when they find your person, Davidson King delivers every time.
The Saint Brothers are so caring for each other it is no surprise that once they find their match, they will do anything and everything to protect them. They just have a deep, beautiful, caring bond. I need to see more from this family! Yes their are still all the beautiful, dark, and twisted people. Non-stop action, but this story has an underlying sweetness to it as well.
Is this your typical Christmas story? No. Is this a Davidson King style Christmas story? Yes. So just go in knowing it's darkness mixed with love.

Oh my… I am late to the party with this series, but I am so glad I am catching up! I can always count on Davidson King to give me a well-mixed cocktail of romance, action and morally grey characters… well, in this case the grey is darker than usual, but that didn’t change how much I enjoyed this story, and much I am anticipating the next ones!
Mason and Gabe (Mason especially, poor guy!) certainly go through a lot, in a city where every single person in a position of power is a poor excuse for a human being, only cares for their sick games and aren’t afraid to dispose of those who are in their way or are simply no more of use.
Gabe and his brothers are out for revenge, to right some wrongs, and once they rescue Mason, the rest is history!

Origin story for this new series

Five brothers suffer a devastating loss and seek to mete out retribution on those responsible. When they come across a man being sexually assaulted in an alley they take care of the perpetrators and bring the victim, Mason, home with them. When Mason escapes out a window he later gets a visit from one of the men telling him not to tell the cops anything. Circumstances bring them all together again, along with a good friend of Mason’s. As things escalate and even more information is discovered the retribution schedule ramps up.

It’s an emotional story and while violent most of that is off page. The stage has been set for future books and it will be interesting to see where the stories go.
