Second Tide's the Charm

Love puts you in uncharted waters.

At first glance, Hope Evans just landed the perfect spending the summer on a shark research boat. Except as every marine biologist knows, it’s what’s going on beneath the surface that counts, and Hope’s new position comes with a big catch—the boat belongs to her ex-boyfriend, Adrian Hollis-Parker. For three years Hope’s been treading water, staying away from anything that reminds her of their past. It’s time to dive back into a job that could springboard her career—and maybe offer much-needed closure.

Since their split, Adrian has risen to internet fame as a shark expert with the launch of his YouTube channel to dispel myths and educate viewers about sharks. But success rings hollow without Hope. Embracing this new career trajectory was a risk, but working in cramped quarters with the woman he never stopped loving? That has the potential to backfire in heartbreaking ways.

Side by side, weathering storms of every kind, they’ll have to navigate the murky waters of past hurts…and hope it’s not too late to chart a new course…

I’m obsessed with the second-chance romance trope. Provided that one of them didn’t do something horrendous, I’m always so excited to see how they work themselves back into each other lives.

I thought this was pretty interesting throughout, especially since it’s not every day I read about shark researchers. The tension was enough to keep me hooked for most of the time. I also liked how realistic the challenges that they faced were. They showed that love is indeed not always a smooth ride, and I liked how they learned what love really meant for them.

- A cutesy story!! If you’re looking for a fluffy second chance romance, this one is a cute one.
- The marine talk definitely took away from the romance because it felt like the focus of the story was more on their careers than their love story. This story was definitely a slow burn and felt really slow at times in comparison to other slow burns that I love.
- Really love how this book focused on following your dreams! It read more like a YA novel than anything so keep that in mind if you decide to pick it up! A cutesy read!

Unfortunately i did not enjoy reading this book. The writing style was just not for it. I couldn't care less about these characters as hard as i tried. Their back and forth about their breakup gave me a whiplash. On top of that these two did not even have one drop of chemistry.

Overall the story felt boring and repetitive.

This one was pretty boring. I felt too in their heads and both the fmc and mmc had the same exact voice! It was so much back and forth about why they should've never broken up. And the chemistry was tepid at best so shortly after they started working together again I found my interest waning.

This was such a fun second-chance romance I enjoyed reading it. The fmc is a marine biologist who loves everything shark and ocean-related while the mmc is a popular photographer who shares videos showcasing his love for sharks, science, and other marine life. They come together after the fmc finds out that her summer job is working with the mmc to film shark/ocean content over the summer. The book navigates them being together after the previous breakup, the fmc career, and the attraction both characters still have for each other.

I loved how sweet the book was, I'm not always very into second-chance romance but I think this one was well written and was realistic with the chemistry and reasons why they broke up the first time. The romance was good and both characters were interesting and perfect for each other. I also liked the marine biologist and career issues that were woven into the story. This was a good read, loved the diversity and black romance. Thank you HTP for the arc.

This had some cute parts, and the shark thing was unique, but honestly there were parts where my mind was wandering and I was a bit bored. An okay read.

Thank you to Harlequin Trading & NetGalley for an ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion.

The premise of this book immediately drew me in. Sharks and a love story?? I was so excited. Unfortunately the only enjoyable parts of this story were the shark facts.

Adrian & Hope had absolutely ZERO chemistry, I mean they weren’t even suited to be friends, let alone “lovers”. Their “romance” is referred to in small flashback sentences when we learn they broke up, and when they start working together they go back and forth between totally ignoring each other, or giving each other awkward kisses, then completely acting like it didn’t happen. Not to mention these are not teenagers acting this way; they are full grown adults acting like this.

I just don’t know y’all… it was weird, they were weird, the plot line was weird.

It was a constant back and forth of let’s get back together, NO lets be friends, leave me alone!, wait I want to kiss you, now I need space, I miss you, want to hunker down together for a hurricane?, give me more space, hiii I’m back wanna try again?

The book HAD potential, sadly it was a full flop for me. It was a tedious read to get through, that was full of consistently rhetorical conservations and events. Ended the book with a giant headache. Do not recommend, wish I had DNF to save my sanity!

This book took me almost a month to get through. I stopped reading it to read other books. It was a slow burn that felt like it dragged and then disappointed… I skipped to the last two chapters after chapter 25.

I can’t completely explain it but it just didn’t do it for me. There was an emphasis on their jobs as scientists, which to some might be really cool but for me, took away from the fact this was a romance novel.

This was a cozy little second chance romance with shark researcher MCs. I enjoyed the passion the author has for sharks shining through in this book and that she put in the effort researching shark research (yeah ok that’s a mouthful) to make sure it was as accurate as she could make it. The fact that Hope and Adrian didn’t have a breakup filled with loathing for each other helped make the story work. They had some communication issues to work through, but it was believable.
I felt like a lot of the internal dialogue was repetitive, when more time could have been spent on page showing them working together and/or having meaningful conversations. They still had good conversations that addressed their prior and current issues. It was pretty sappy and a bit hallmarky, but that’s kinda the vibe I was expecting from the blurb and cover. Overall, good book.

Spice: 0/5

Triggers: mentions of spouse death in car accident (side character), brief perilous scuba diving equipment malfunction, tropical storm, mentions of car accident (not involving MCs)

The audio narrators were really great; I wanted more chemistry from these two for a second-chance romance.

I've been struggling to read lately due to ~life~ so I listened to about 50% and breezed through the rest with my eyes.

The shark facts? On point.

Content Note: main character's sister was widowed due to a horrible car accident (in past); hurricane

This was a fun dual POV, second chance summer romance between two shark scientists reunited after three years apart. When Hope's friend fires her she's left floundering and in need of a new career direction. Having left her love of shark research and her long time boyfriend, Adrian, to move back home and help her friend, she now has to face both and confront the feelings that have never died.

Lighthearted and full of shark content, this was a wholesome, feel-good read from an author who I really enjoy. Learning more about shark research on a boat was my favorite part! Different and quick-paced, I sped through this and definitely recommend for a fun summer read! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

Second Tides the Charm by Chandra Blumberg

Tropes
Second chance romance
Forced proximity
Sharks and boats
Personal growth journey
Third act break up

FMC-Marine biologist
MMC-influencer and dr

Thoughts
✅Light easy reading but characters lacked depth- not always required in a romance but I found it difficult to become invested in the MCs
✅Slow burn- sexual tension was lacking, and while Closed door romance is fine, I didnt feel the spark between these MCs; their friendship overpowered their romance

Overall
An ok read

Ok so one I didn’t know this was a closed door romance which isn’t an issue but it’s definitely something I like to know going into a book. This was such a cozy read. It’s a second chance romance between two biologists and I had a blast learning so much about sharks. I do have to say that the internal dialogue got a bit receptive and dragged in some parts for me. I just wanted to shake both Hope and Adrian at times and scream at them to just be together. I do wish their desire for each other would have been a bit more obvious, and I don’t mean physically. Sometimes it felt like they’d be better off as friends instead of partners. I feel like this is a book that could be easily adapted to Hallmark but they’d need to sprinkle a little more palpable romance in it. I did enjoy it though and would recommend to someone who was looking for something cozy to read.

3.5 stars.

There was a lot to like about this book. Two amazing people who adore each other lost touch out of fear. Three years after they last saw each other, they are reunited to work on shark research for the summer and it becomes obvious that both of them are still in love with the other and have been the whole time. It's fun to follow along for the nerdy shark science and fun banter.

There are three things I need to make a second chance romance work really well:
1. A real reason the two people broke up, that isn’t due to them being crap people.
2. Real growth leading them back to each other.
3. An abiding love and faithfulness, meaning there were no other folks they pursued while they were broken up.

I hated the reason they broke up, feel like the growth took WAY TOO LONG, but there was definitely an abiding love and faithfulness, especially on the guy's side, which was cute.

This story drove me crazy and it’s rooted in the fear and hesitancy that tanked their relationship the first time. They had done long-distance dating for more than 5 years and, right before they were going to live together, she ends up leaving to help a friend of hers. And then… they both just stop trying because of fear and their relationship fades away. Neither of them reached out over the three years even though they pined all the time. What kept this from being a 5-star book is that there is so much fear and hesitancy to being in a relationship. For most of the book, it’s her pulling away from him because she wants to pursue her career goals and not be tied down to one place or give up her ideals to stay with him. She finally gets over her fears towards the end and then he gets all afraid and asks for time to think away from her.

It felt like the longest pining ever. And the constant pulling away because they’re afraid strings the book out so long and we hardly get any time with them together without fear. Just at the VERY VERY end. Also, they are way too comfortable with living apart. I couldn’t stand that much long-distance dating. And it’s not satisfying to read. They are apart A LOT!!!

I listened to the audiobook. It’s dual POV with dual narrators. The woman does a great job with both voices, but the man isn’t great at the heroine’s voice.

Safety deets
- No other men or women. They only have eyes for each other.
- He hasn’t dated anyone else since they were last together (or at least we don’t hear anything about him trying to date anyone). She has tried to date other guys but no one has stacked up. I get the impression that she kissed other guys but I don’t know beyond that.
- Even though there are references to past spicy times, the book is very tame and only has kissing.
- The epilogue shows them together, but it’s hard to know if they live together finally or are together for a summer. It’s frustrating because we also don’t know if they got married or anything!

Such a cute book! So glad I snagged an ARC at ALA. I am skeptical of second chance romance, but I found this one really believable; it was satisfying to read a realistic depiction of people who’ve learned how to communicate with each other and sort out their own stuff come back together. Also, as a nature nerd, the shark researcher piece was such a draw. It definitely made me miss the coast of South Carolina, humidity and all. One I know I’ll keep coming back to!

I picked up this book because I was excited to see POC leads in STEM, especially marine biology, which is such a fascinating and underrepresented field in fiction. The premise of a second-chance romance between two shark scientists was irresistible to me, and I was eager to dive in.

From the start, I loved how the book balanced the romance with shark research—something I didn’t realize I’d like so much! The dual POVs made it easy to connect with both Hope and Adrian, whose past relationship adds tension and depth to their interactions. It was good to see them communicate openly about their issues, rather than dragging out misunderstandings, which kept the story engaging.

That said, I wish we’d spent more time with them as a couple, reconnecting and learning about each other. The book sometimes lingered too much on their past.

Overall, this book was a good mix of romance and STEM , and I hope to see more stories like this with diverse leads in the future. If you're looking for a light, educational read this is it.

"Love is simple. Relationships aren't."

This book is the nerdy contemporary romance of my dreams!!! I loved it SO DAMN MUCH. It was so romantic, made me literally laugh out loud many times, and had me swooning left and right.

Also: shark researchers. Truly, what more could you ask for?

Hope and Adrian had parted ways three years ago. There wasn't really an end so much as there was a slow but sure dissolution. The lack of closure has bothered both of them, with an abundance of hurt feelings between them. When Hope gets fired from her "its temporary" (three years ago) job, she ends back working with Adrian bringing shark education to the masses via his very popular YouTube channel. Along the way they realise their feelings for one another are very real and very present.

Watching their love story unfold was an utter delight. The writing is beautiful. The characters are grown ass adults who talk about their shit, own up to their mistakes and misunderstandings, and support each other endlessly. I loved the little ways Adrian showed he cared (e.g by not having Hope report to him). I loved watching them titrate together as they went in and out of orbiting each other. I loved how they shared what they were feeling even, especially, when it felt scary AF.

I also loved the side characters who were fully fleshed out (though I wanted a bit more from Zuri) and integral to the story. I hope we get follow-up stories for Zuri and Marissa (her and Gabe perhaps? Am I reading into things too much?). I loved being in this world and hope I get to go back.

Thank you to HTP and Netgalley for an ARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.

I loved this second chance romance between Hope & Adrian. Hope left everything she knew to help her best friend after a devastating loss but now she feels it's time to return to her life as a marine biologist. But that also means entering the world of her ex again. Adrian has tried to move on since Hope left him and has found success in his career as a YouTube star.

As the two reconnect to study sharks again, the chemistry is sizzling from day 1. But I also really enjoyed the honest conversations between the characters and I also loved the support they received from their friends and family. I love seeing healthy and relatable family/friend dynamics in novels.

The second I came across this book I KNEW I had to read it. I’m very interested in sharks, so a romance between shark biologists? Sign me up

I LOVED the characters (and I’m hoping for a sequel pls pls pls) and we saw them grow so much. This romance had forced proximity, second chance romance, and super protective vibes that I loved. Only took away half a star because I felt like there was a lot of repetition at the beginning that could’ve been cut down, but other than that, I was obsessed with this book!

No spice, so perfect for people who want a clean romance!

Now, this is what I want to see when it comes to black romance with a second chance trope. I get tired of seeing the second chance romance where someone steps outside the relationship, blah, blah, blah, that gets extremely OLD! Second Tide's the Charm is a hilarious, cute second chance romance that involves sharks 🦈 . Highly recommend if you want a cozy romance read.

[ DNF @ 70% ] I really tried to finish this book given its short-ish page length but couldn’t. I didn’t particularly like Hope from the beginning. I did like Adrian for the most part. However, it was hard to root for these two to get back together again after six years of a seemingly perfect relationship.

I had thought the story would get better and the plot more interesting as time went on. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. Instead, I found myself struggling to pick up the book. As days became weeks and then became months, I decided to discontinue reading out of lack of interest.

I liked that the main characters are marine biologists, their enthusiasm to share their knowledge with others, and their passion for advocating for sharks.

In short, I had high hopes for this story as a second chance romance – one of my favorite tropes – but it ended up being a DNF for me.

Audiobook Review

This was my first experience with both the author and narrators—I couldn’t resist discovering new-to-me talents! I was drawn in by the beautiful cover and the unique premise—a romance between two shark researchers. And after too many “very white” stories, I was craving more diversity, and this book delivered.

Second Tide’s the Charm is an unassuming, low-drama second-chance romance. It’s not bad, and it didn’t bore me, but it failed to fully engage me. I didn’t feel invested in the characters or their story, mostly due to an overreliance on internal musings and wistful reminiscing. There’s a lot of “telling” about past events and current attractions, but not enough “showing” to let the listener experience the emotions. It could have been more impactful and moving.

That said, I appreciated how Hope and Adrian made mistakes but were willing to apologize, forgive, and trust again. They communicate. Sadly, there’s little chemistry between them. I didn’t feel the kisses—and yes, it’s kisses only—but I did enjoy their initial attempts to fall out of love, which inevitably made them fall even harder. Much harder.

The third-act breakup, as expected, felt unnecessary, but at least it matched the story’s low-key vibe.

What kept me listening were the kind characters, the fascinating and unique shark content, and the well-executed friendship dynamics. The representation also stood out, especially the nod to how important Hope’s work is for inspiring girls interested in science.

The narrators added to the experience. Keylor Leigh’s smooth, youthful voice gave the female lead extra warmth and likability. Amir Abdullah’s tone, rhythm, and pace took a moment to get used to, but once I did, I found myself relaxing into his style and enjoying his performance.

Ultimately, while this story didn’t fully resonate with me, I appreciated its diverse cast and exploration of what we’re willing to do and risk for love. It won’t be my last book by Chandra Blumberg, and I’m already searching out more offerings from the narrators.

So this loooooveeeeee 🦈💙

Okay. I picked up this book on a whim when I was at the library, and let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not a big fan of second chance romances, actually I’m somewhat a hater of second chance romances, but I LOVED Second Tide’s the Charm.

Hope and Adrian are scientists that work with sea life research, mainly sharks. They met in school, but after years of dating their relationship ended! 😲😲😲 As the title suggests life brings them together again and maybe the sparks are still there 😋😋🤭🤭

I loooooved the black scientists turned science-influencer-show-hosts that the characters’ careers had. I’m a sucker for any academia romance, and this one will definitely be on my favorites list for that!

I thought the chemistry between the characters was fun and realistic. It was the best type of contemporary romance. I liked how Hope’s character developed, and she became more comfortable in her own skin. Adrian is one of the best book boyfriends! 🤌🤌 All the side characters are also amazing, supportive, and help our MCs in their journeys. I read this book in a day, because it was just such a good time! 👯‍♀️

This is also a closed door romance with actual good romance 😙🤌❤️‍🔥

I look forward to reading more works by Chandra!

A really cute, slow-burn, closed door romance! As a neuroscience girlie, I loved the biology aspect of this story too! Such a fun thing to throw in.

The chemistry between the two main characters was sweet. I’ve apparently been on a second-chance romance kick even though I swear I don’t believe in second chances romance?? For some reason, I wasn’t really rooting for these to get back together despite loving them both as individuals. Their first breakup was confusing and childish, and if that were my friend I would not advise them to get back together!

There wasn’t a ton of conflict in this story, so I really felt like I was just along for the ride. That can be so nice for a beach read! So low anxiety. The conflict that did arise was really well placed!

Dual pov, so we get the FMC and MMC thoughts on their relationship as we follow along the book.

A really good three star read! If the summary appeals to you, I would absolutely recommend picking it up. So cute, but didn’t stand out to me too much just because I didn’t really think they deserved a second chance.
