This vibrant picture book celebrates individuality in both the text and images. Filled with simple affirmations Belong assures children they all have a place in the world, dreams to fulfill, and important work to do. Bold illustrations by Niña Mata depict children of many races and abilities in everyday situations—at home, at play, and at school. Hess thoughtfully acknowledges that there will be times when children may feel left out, sad, or hopeless and that we all need to take a break from time to time. The insistence that each child is important, that each child belongs, is made stronger by the acknowledgement that it doesn't always feel that way. Add this feel-good read to the list of picture books perfect for welcoming a baby or for setting the tone of a classroom community.

Highly recommended for readers in PreS-2.

This is a book worthy of many reads. It hits every major mark when assessing what makes a picture book excellent. Mary Rand Hess has a lyrical touch and the text flows beautifully when reading quietly or aloud. The illustrations are fantastic. Nina Mata's style complements the message perfectly.

Lots of similes and metaphor about what belonging means. I think kids would really struggle to unpack the meaning. For example, "You belong...like the rain filling the birdbaths." Kids are just so literal. It would be really tricky to figure out filling the birdbath is like belonging.

This book feels like a warm embrace to me. It’s simple, but beautiful, encouraging, and profound all at the same time. I love the illustrations too and can’t wait to share this with my baby boy!
