Val Costa #3

Hidden in the Dark: A completely unputdownable and totally addictive crime thriller

Rate this book
The table is set for family dinner; roast chicken, wine for them and juice for their darling boy, a vase of fresh daisies from the garden for decoration. But the food is cold, and the flowers are wilting. You might think they were sleeping in the next room, if it wasn’t for the blood dripping crimson onto the carpet…

FBI Agent Val Costa is drawn out of retirement once again when the Cramer family are found dead in their home in Red Rose County. She falls to her knees in despair at the sight of little Michael Jr., curled up on the couch. What monster would take the life of an innocent child? Val vows to find justice for the mother, Stephanie Cramer, who survived the attack but is fighting for her life in hospital.

Interviewing neighbors uncovers no leads, but Val knows there’s a message in the way Mike Cramer’s body was left, tied to chair, stab wounds all over his body. It seems mother and son were collateral, and Mike was the real target. But why? Working in an auto shop between taking his boy to karate class, Michael was a perfect family man. There are no signs of a robbery, and all Val has to work with are small-town whispers about the age gap between him and his wife.

A break in the case comes when a secret phone is found hidden in Mike’s car and GPS reveals he’d been making late-night trips out of town for weeks before his family was attacked. Her team are quick to suspect an affair, but Val’s instincts tell her it’s something far more sinister.

As more cracks in the perfect Cramer family picture begin to show—arguments, money troubles—Val must work around the clock to stop this twisted individual in their tracks. But does she know someone is watching her every move? And when a dark secret in Mike’s past surfaces, can Val stay ahead of her stalker long enough to catch the killer before another precious life is taken?

An absolutely pulse-pounding crime thriller with unputdownable suspense, perfect for fans of Mary Stone, Kate Gable and L.T. Ryan.

After reading the 2nd Val Costa book, I felt the plot was too similar to the first book. I’m happy to report that this book had a fresh new plot! All of her books have an easy writing style especially given the tough topics. All of the characters, except the bad guys, have redeeming qualities. I’m especially glad that Val isn’t a narcissistic, self-entitled drunk like so many of the female law enforcement figures portrayed in other books! I feel like one, important underlying theme has outlived itself, but that’s no biggie. I will continue to read her books! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!

I’m starting to get invested in the characters and the books are getting tighter. The mysteries are good. If you have enjoyed Crimjnal Minds on TV and police/FBI procedurals I think you’ll like this. In addition to the murder mystery, there is a lot of real-world/reality that happens along side. There’s also a slow burning subplot that is keeping me interested. I want to know how it turns out!

Former special agent Val Costa is used to take control whist working a case. At the moment she still is in her home town and being asked to help the police department for the third time as a consultant. They would like her to work for them permanently, but she has not decided what she wants yet and thus the role she has now fits her perfectly.

What I like about Val is that she knows her place. She knows she should not take the lead as she used to do and she knows when to take a step back. Her colleagues though don't mind her being the leading lacy, because they know she has a lot of expertise and she always respects the team.

She also is a family woman always looking out for her mom and her son. Maybe it's time for her to invest a bit in herself now. I feel like she is on the right track. :)

Although she is successful in her job, heer family is safe and sound, there is a dark cloud closing in...

I am a huge fan of this series and of the author's storytelling. I cannot wait to read the next book. I have a strong feeling it is going to be a heavy one. 5 stars

H.K. Christie has a fantastic writing style and a bonafide protagonist in Val Costa. I loved the first two books in her series & it’s great to read them in order, but they can be read as stand-alones. This pulse-pounding crime thriller is filled with suspense & and excitement.

Thank you, H.K. Christie, Bookouture, & netgalley for my #gifted copy! All opinions are my own.

Hidden in the Dark by H.K. Christie is an intense, fast-paced thriller that keeps the suspense at an all-time high. Book three in the Val Costa series, it brings us back into the complex world of former special agent Val Costa as she consults on another tough case for her hometown police department. Val is a refreshingly real protagonist: smart, capable, and balanced by a deep care for her family, particularly her mom and son, which adds a heartfelt layer to the story.

Val’s character development really shines here. She knows when to take charge and when to step back, and it’s this balance that makes her such a relatable, multidimensional lead. Her partnership with Brady adds another layer of chemistry to the story, and their combined expertise and teamwork keep you hooked. Their dynamic, plus the many points of view, ratchets up the tension with unexpected twists and turns that make this book difficult to put down.

What I appreciated most is how the ongoing serial killer investigation lingers in the background, adding complexity without overwhelming the main case. This allows the novel to feel both complete on its own and connected to the larger arc of the series, making it perfect for returning fans as well as newcomers. Though a few clues seemed a bit too easy to miss, and some personal oversharing raised eyebrows, these elements didn’t detract from the story’s fast pace and gripping suspense.

H.K. Christie has created an addictive crime series that only gets better with each book. Hidden in the Dark is a must-read for fans of crime thrillers, especially those who love strong female leads and compelling storylines that keep you on the edge of your seat. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC—highly recommend this for a thrilling binge-read!

Hidden in the Dark by H.K. Christie is the 3rd book in the excellent Val Costa series and what a gripping and very addictive crime thriller this is. This has been a series i have enjoyed reading from the very first book and I love Val Costa character, she was/is a FBI Special Agent Val Costa was living in DC until she was kidnapped by the serial killer known as "The Bear." She was hunting him but he hunted her and captured her! So, glad her team rescued her in time. But, there was something "The Bear" always does to all his victims was to carved his signature on their skin!
Now, he is still out there, somewhere and walking freely amongst people.
Val has retired from the FBI and has moved back in with her mom who lives in Red Rose County California as she has had a stroke, she is there to help her recover. Val has had it tough but always comes bouncing back.

With the table is set for family dinner; roast chicken, wine for them and juice for their darling boy, a vase of fresh daisies from the garden for decoration. But the food is stone cold, and the flowers are wilting. You might think they were sleeping in the next room, if it wasn’t for the blood dripping crimson onto the carpet. . . . .

Whilst Interviewing all the neighbours Val and her small team uncovers no leads, but Val knows there’s a message in the way Mike Cramer’s body was left, he is tied to his chair, and stab wounds all over his body.
It seems mother and son were collateral, and Mike was the real target.

Why were they all murdered? They seem to be a perfect and respected family!

Mike worked in a local auto shop and he took his son to karate classes, Michael was a perfect family man. There are no signs of a robbery, and all Val has to work with are small-town whispers about the age gap between him and his wife. But, there is nothing wrong with that............

There's a small break in the case and it comes when a secret phone is found hidden in Mike’s car and his GPS reveals he’d been making late-night trips out of town for weeks before his family was attacked.
Her team are quick to suspect an affair, but Val’s instincts tell her it’s something far more sinister.

More cracks begin to show in this so called perfect Cramer family and a picture is beginning to show. . . . arguments, and money troubles, Val and her small team now has to work around the clock to stop this twisted individual in their tracks.

But, does she know someone is watching her every move?

A dark secret in Mike’s past surfaces, and can Val stay ahead of her stalker long enough to catch the killer before another precious life is taken?

WoW....Another excellent book!

I highly recommend it. I am looking forward reading book 4 within this series.

***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

The Cramer family was found in their home - the husband and son murdered, and the wife barely hanging on. FBI Agent Val Costa is drawn out of retirement to try to solve this heinous crime. On the surface Mike seems like the perfect family man, and the Cramer family seems like the perfect family. But things don't add up. He worked at an auto body shop and she is a receptionist, yet there is a luxury vehicle in the driveway. Where is the money coming from? Then they discover a burner phone under the driver's seat, and the cracks really begin to break open. When a dark secret from Mike's past is revealed, Val knows she is racing against time to solve the case before Stephanie wakes from her medically induced coma and starts talking - and the murderer comes back to finish the job.

This is the third book in the Val Costa series. I admit, I haven't read the first two books, but I feel like they must all be able to be read as a standalone because I wasn't lost. The chapters were told in the alternating viewpoints of Val, some of the other characters, and randomly interspersed with chapters in the viewpoint of someone called "secret admirer". The secret admirer may be a carryover from one of the previous books - you really don't find out much about them except that they are watching Val. This book had a good mystery that kept me guessing, and I enjoyed FBI Agent Val Costa's character. If you are a fan of mysteries & suspense, then you should definitely check this out.

This is a weird review as I was sure I wrote about book #1 and #2 in this series. I was going to write the review for book #3 and discovered that I didn't write anything for the entire series so this will be a common review for the entire series, including the third novel.
Val Costa is a great character: she's not wonder woman, she hasn't any huge chip on her shoulder nor a traumatic past, she's a clever and brave woman who works for FBI and collaborate with the local police.
She moved in a Californian county to be near her son after a meeting with a serial killer that left her branded and phisically hurt. She needs to recover and think about her future.
Red Rose county is not a huge and highly populated county, you have to suspend your belief because the number of violent death is highest than 58.4 dead for 100k person.
Statistics apart this is a hell of a series that improves with each installment and the third one is the best one so far. There's always suspense and emotions in these stories and I found the third one a gripping and heart wrenching page turner.
Val grew on me and I loved her evolution and cannot wait to read new stories as I wanted to visit Rose County and catch up with the characters.
I appreciated how the author developed the solid plots that surprised me and the good storytelling.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This fast-paced, twist-laden novel is the third installment in the Val Costa series, but it works brilliantly as a standalone. Hidden in the Dark is a stellar thriller that delivers on every front, making it a solid 5-star read.

H.K. Christie’s writing style is highly readable and addictive. You’ll find yourself flying through the pages, unable to put the book down. The use of multiple POVs is a highlight, particularly the perspective of the enigmatic “secret admirer.” This character’s chilling voice adds an extra dimension of suspense and leaves readers hanging on a tantalizing cliffhanger, eagerly awaiting the next book.

Val Costa herself is a standout. She’s a relatable, multidimensional protagonist who juggles her roles as a consultant for the police, mother, daughter, and friend with grit and humanity. Her strength and vulnerability make her easy to root for, and her romance with Brady adds a touch of warmth amidst the darkness.

H.K. Christie is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her ability to weave unpredictable twists with deeply personal stakes sets her apart in the thriller genre. Fans of strong female leads, clever plotting, and relentless suspense will find much to love here.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

Just another amazing read by H.K. Christie! You will fall in LOVE with her series if you take the chance, I promise you! Law & Order type vibes, but with characters you fall in love with and can’t WAIT to see what happens next in their lives.

•brutal murder
•obsession/stalking
•mob hitman
•new identity

Val Costa gets to join the Red Rose County Sheriff Crew yet again in solving another local murder in their small town. A family of three was murdered, but the wife/mom Shannon, ends up surviving. No one knows why someone would want to kill this quiet, suburban family— a father and their teenage son. There’s something strange of how the father, Mike, was murdered. He was murdered brutally, but his wife and son were drugged and then shot to make it a quick death. At first Val and head sheriff Brady think it’s drug related. Once they come to a dead end with the drug cartel, they are lost on where to go. That’s until they do some digging into Mike’s past, and that’s when they find the hard truth about his early life. It’s a crazy plot twist that’ll keep you guessing!! (I don’t want to give too many spoilers away)

Thank you for the opportunity to allow me to read an ARC on this, H.K. & NetGalley! Keep them coming!! 😻

Hidden in the Dark is the third book in the Val Costa series. Val used to work for the FBI, but since being held hostage by a serial killer and her mother having a stroke, Val has stepped back from this work. It hasn't stopped her from getting involved in murder and detective work and in this third book we see her again assisting the local police.

I really enjoy the way that Val and Brady, her childhood friend, policeman and potential love interest work together to solve this mystery. It's a particularly nasty crime, with a tortured man and his wife and son also having been shot. I'm not sure that the residents of Red Rose County will be that thrilled to have Val living back there, as she seems to have heralded a particularly nasty spate of murders with her recent arrival.

Val also has the threat of the Bear hanging over her. This is the serial killer that she was chasing on her last case and who held her hostage. It seems that he's never far away, even if Val doesn't always realise it. In each book he gets a little bit closer.

This is a gripping and thrilling read and one that I would highly recommend.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.

A family is attacked by unknown assailants in their home, and the woman is left for dead.
There seems to be no motive for this brutal attack, but there are lots of secrets to uncover.
Val Costa is called in to consult on the case.

This is another instalment of a series I have enjoyed so far. Val is a top notch investigator, and finds it easy to take the lead on the case.
She has great instincts and together with Brady, unearths clues and they ask the right questions.

I do like the way Val is close to her son and Mom, and that her Mom has close friends to take the pressure off Val when Val is working a case.

However, something that does irritate me, is Val's tendency to talk about her cases to all and sundry. Her son, her mother and the friends, and to Kieren. Yes, I realise these are trusted people, but I really thought this is a no-no in the law and order community?

Another cliff hanger, and am waiting almost impatiently for the next book.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

Once again, H.K. Christie proves she’s a master of the genre with her latest book, Hidden in the Dark—a story that’s impossible to put down. Her storytelling mastery shines in every chapter, weaving intricate plots and keeping readers guessing until the very end.

The book opens with a heart-wrenching scene: Mike Jr. and his father, Mike, share a lighthearted moment before dinner, only for their lives to be violently shattered by an unexpected visitor. The family is left broken, with only the mother surviving.

The narrative alternates between Val, Brady, the killer, and a mysterious secret admirer. These shifting perspectives heighten the tension and pull readers deeper into the unfolding mystery.

This series is tailor-made for fans of gritty, intelligent thrillers. Christie’s writing rivals—and even surpasses—many popular TV crime dramas, making Hidden in the Dark feel ripe for adaptation. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, you’re missing out on one of the best thrillers in recent times.

Hidden in the Dark is the third book in the Val Costa series but the first I have read. I didn’t have trouble keeping up with the story in this book but it is worth noting Val has someone from her past that is stalking her through these books. Val retired from the FBI after being kidnapped by a serial killer and escaping. Now she helps the local police department on certain special cases. The latest case involves the murder of a father and son and a shot to the head for the critically injured mother. It quickly becomes apparent that someone was targeting the family due to the father’s past. The case is interesting and wraps up neatly by the end of the book. Val’s serial killer stalker leaves off with the pursuit continuing into the next books of the series. The characters are likable and the touch of chemistry and hints of romance between Val and Brady just enhance the story for an enjoyable, page-turning mystery. My voluntary, unbiased, and non-mandatory review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

Book 3 in the Val Costa series by H.K. Christie, Hidden in the Dark, delivers another engaging read bring the cast of regular characters together again with a new mystery, coupled with a touch of romance and an ongoing story that will keep you hooked for the next installment.

With another horrific crime scene in Red Rose County, retired FBI agent Val Costa receives a call from Brandy, asking if she could once again consult and take the lead on the investigation. As the team work to unravel the motivation behind the attack to uncover who is responsible, Val also continues in her pursuit of ‘The Bear’, a serial killer she was lucky to escape.

The women really take the lead in this series, from their professions and being highly qualified and experienced in what was a small, quiet county, to what is going on in their lives (hello dating in Red Rose Country… and girls’ nights).

‘The Bear’, is back and this story will have you wondering, just how progressed is his plan, when will he take action, and just how many in Val’s circle might be impacted.

A family or three is viciously attacked in their home, with the husband and young son killed, the husband was also tortured. The wife clinging to life and might not survive. Why would someone target this seemingly quiet family? Val Costa is once again asked to assist the police department in solving this horrible murder scene. There seems to be no leads and the more digging the police do the less it all makes sense. A break seems to happen when it is discovered that the man has been selling drugs over the past year. Did a rival drug gang take him out? Seems like it could be the reason. Until a major lead drops into the police's lap. But could this really be the reason an entire family was attacked and could it really be that easy of a reason...the US Marshals office is the lead but then even that hits a snag. Meanwhile, Val's past trauma is still causing her nightmares and since the person who caused it has not been caught he is closer to her than she knows.

5⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Hidden In The Dark.

Val is once again called upon by her friend Brady to help solve the brutal murder of a family. Val is still suffering from PTSD from her abduction by a serial killer known as The Bear but working on this new case gives her a fresh perspective on the possible identity of The Bear. This family seems like your normal family until they start digging more in the husbands past and realize he may not be your average husband and father.

This is the third book in this series and I would definitely recommend reading the first two books before reading this one. The main characters are so easy to resonate with and the storyline was very well written. I was hooked from the first page and did not see the twists coming at all! I hope this series continues because I cannot wait to see what else will happen. I highly recommend this entire series!

This is the third book in the Val Costa series, and it does not disappoint. In this narrative, Val and her ‘team’ investigate and solve brutal murders that occurred in Red Rose County. Once again, Ms Christie builds this creative story around the cohesive and close-knit team of law enforcement that Val has considered her second family. Each story, their bond grows stronger, as they all work together like a well oiled machine. Together, with their diverse skills, their investigation takes many turns as they process their leads. The story kept me engaged until the last page, which was a great ending. Ms Christie’s writing talent keeps me intrigued and gave me a sense of belonging as a member of the team, and present at each scene of developments. Even as the investigation moves forward at a quick pace, there lingers a dormant evil unknown presence in the background, quietly waiting for his opportunity again with Val. Love this plot stream. I highly recommend this book and author. I received a complimentary ARC, but I am voluntarily offering my personal opinion.

4 1/2 STARS!

Addictive and fast paced intrigue! The third book in Christie's Val Costa series does not disappoint as Val is knee deep in an investigation yet again during her supposed retirement from the FBI. We get to reconnect with her family and coworkers who have been her support system from the beginning of the series and go along for the ride as she works night and day to solve the murder of a family who from the outside looking in don't seem a likely target. Val's previous serial killer captor is still surrounding her and the anticipation after the set up for a bit of what is to come in the next book is high. Great suspense, believable characters and satisfying conclusions. I can't wait for more!

I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone who enjoys a police procedural story with a strong female lead who always gets justice for her cases.

A family sits down to dinner, only to have it interrupted by an unusual knock at their door. The entire family, including a 12 year old boy, have been shot, though the mom is clinging to life by a thread. Retired FBI agent Val Costa is called in to assist the local police in learning the truth about who would want to kill the family. As she discovers more of the dad's dark secrets, the mom regains consciousness and begins to remember bit and pieces of the night of the attack.

Though this is the third book in the Val Costa series, it stands alone fine without having to be familiar with the first two titles. There is plenty of suspense as the investigation proceeds, and not everyone is who they claim to be.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I have loved going back into following Val in Rose County this time shes dragged into working on another case a murder on a family. I like how in the frist few chapters we have a recap of sorts of what has happen in the previous books. I like how Brady has come along and his development in this book made me smile.

I love seeing The Sercret Admiers view of all the going on evne thought at times this creeps me out knwoing how close he is.

I couldn't but this book down once i started it

Being obsessed with this series is an understatement. I love Val and Brady. The way they work together to solve crimes, and the bit of tension between them too ::chef's kiss:: And they’re older characters, which makes them more relatable.

Brutal murders to kick off the book. And Val and Brady and crew are brought in to figure out why. They’re so methodical and Val’s instincts are stellar. They all work well together and have some great friendships beyond the job too. She’s protective of everyone in her life, and there are many times in this book where that is blatantly obvious.

I read this one in a morning, I couldn’t put it down.

Val is tending to her mother when she is asked to join the Police force to solve a gruesome killing of a child and his father and the mother who was left for dead when they reached their home. Val, Brady and their team will work non-stop trying to understand who is behind the crime but nothing makes sense until the US Marshalls join the case and things only get worse. Nothing was as it seemed, there is a corrupt and vindictive US Marshall, the mob, a father figure that had a really dark past, and two brothers who could not leave the past behind and only made their present worse for them and their families. Engaging and well-written, Hidden in the Dark is good entertainment!
I thank Ms. Christie, her publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.

Officer Brady asks Val for help on another case, and it is a nasty one. A twelve year old boy, his mother, and father have all be shot. The dad was tortured too. Both Dad and son have died, and mother is in critical condition at the hospital – unknown if she will recover. Val, Brady, and the team start to investigate and initially find nothing out of the ordinary. They were a nice, quiet family that kept to themselves. But the more then dig, the more they find out that the dad had a shady past. Is his past coming back to haunt him, or was it a random attack, or something more recent. A great thriller mystery full of leads, clues, and surprises. Multiple points of view give a rounded view of the case. Enjoy this well written mystery.

Book #3 in the Val Costa series, and this book is another great addition to the series. Val,Brady, and the team are back, uncovering the death of Mike and his son. What you think might be a robbery turns into a revenge murder. Did Mike's past catch up with him? It's up to Val to uncover the mystery while still having the nagging feeling that her stalker "the bear" is close by. Love this very suspenseful series, especially love Val and Brady! I'm looking forward to the next book !!! Read this series of you love a great ongoing series that you're totally invested in and can't wait for more books!!

HK Christie has done it again. Another fast pace fbi crime thriller. This is the third book to the Val Costa FBI agent series. Where Val who in this book is former fbi agent and is contracting with Red Rose county sheriffs department and working along side Deputy Brady.

She helps work on cases also while trying to find out who the bear is from the first book.

This book kept me interested the whole time which I absolutely loved. And the ending makes me feel all kinds of emotions because there has to be a fourth book to the series coming??!!!!

Definitely recommend this series if you are a thriller and fbi crime junkie.

Another great read featuring Val Costa! This is the third in the series but can be read as a stand alone as some backstory is included. The story has a gripping start with a family being murdered in a small town. Val is called to the case along with the regular cast of supporting characters. The Bear and her Secret Admirer also have a role in this novel. We follow Val and Brady together again as they try and solve the Cramer murder case (and their love life). Between money troubles, drugs, and family secrets, Val goes down a rabbit hole trying to find the killer. An easy and thrilling afternoon read.

There are plenty of twists in as Val Costa and team work to solve the murder of a family. Val is an ex-FBI agent and hasn't quite settled on what she wants to do next careerwise. In the meantime, she helps consult on cases for the Red Rose County sheriff's department. This current case has them totally baffled at first until GPS from the family's cars and their phone records provide some leads to follow.

The story also has a subplot in the background of a serial killer who had previously held Val captive and is still after her. While overall I enjoyed the story, having not read the previous books it was a little confusing figuring out who the recurring figures were at first.
