This book really opened my eyes in the marketing world. It's given me so much inspiration to help me with my own marketing, as well as the information I need to do it. I really recommend it to other indie authors.

I received a copy of this book from the author, but the opinions are my own.

Well said step by step ideas, systems. I enjoyed the interviews with successful authors and the various skill sets that worked for each one.

I got my copy from NoiseTrade. I'd hoped to pick up some new tips, but didn't really learn anything.
If you're really new to self-publishing, there is some useful information, but do your own research as well.
At one point the author endorses the idea of review swapping, but this is actually against Amazon's terms of service and could get the authors involved in trouble.
She talks about making books permafree on Amazon by publishing on another platform, making it free there, then asking Amazon to price match, when the easiest solution is to publish through Pronoun and control the price on five retailers (including Amazon) from a single point. Pronoun doesn't so much as rate a mention, in fact.
The list of competitions to enter is filled with ones with entry fees that are dauntingly high.
The start of the book had pages (13?) of reviews. If I've already bought/downloaded it, I don't need that sort of filler. The end section is interviews.
Overall, the author doesn't say much about how she, specifically, sold 80,000 books, just talks about self-publishing, and things you can try.

This is a great book - I read it in one session but I know that I will keep going back to it over and over again as a reference book in months to come. It is so hard to get one's books noticed at all, and there is a wealth of information in here to work through and try. Can I write in my review that the advice in here works? No - it might be a year or even five years from now before I have tried everything suggested and can give any kind of confirmation of that. What I can say is that there is a huge amount of things to try, and as a new author myself, I am eagerly looking forward to getting on and trying everything, one step at a time.

Authors who go on and share information like this to other authors, need an extra big clap for the help they extend to others. In this book that includes the writer herself, and the authors who provided interviews in the second half of the book. Hearing how successful writers 'did it' is priceless, and having all the information in one place is great.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book has good information, but none of it was new (to me, anyway). It's an easy, quick read, and if you've never done any marketing research for how to sell your book, this is a good start. I have to say I was hoping for something more--maybe I'm being a bit lazy here in wishing for an itemized list of steps or more in-depth tricks on how to get setup on some of the resources--but it felt more like a "here's a bunch of things you can do to try to see if they work." I skimmed some of it; for example, the importance of hiring good editors and having a professional create your cover, since that's table stakes, in my opinion, and should go without mentioning.

Still, I would say it's all good advice, and the author provides links to her webpage where she provides different tools to help organize your marketing. That alone is worthwhile, although going to her website will net you those for free.

3.5 stars. A great primer on all that self-publishing entails re: marketing, but the title is slightly misleading as the author never gives an exact plan of how she sold 80,000 books or if it is for one title or her whole backlist. Also it isn't 100% clear if she means paper and ebook sales combined. That said, this book still gave me some great ideas of things to look into for my own marketing and is worth skimming at least for indie authors. Read it for a general overview of marketing for authors, but don't expect a breakthrough system as a lot of this info can be found elsewhere.

The only thing harder than writing a good book is... selling it. I always enjoy learning from what other authors are doing to create their own marketing plans in this ever-evolving digital marketplace we're in. Children's author Rutkowska shares a solid game plan for getting your marketing started and your books selling. I picked several new tips I want to try, including some Goodreads hacks.

A great read for any author!

I found this book immensely helpful. As an indie author, it has great tips for published authors and self-publishers alike. I would have given the book five stars, however, some of the links did not work and the dates for a number of events were for last year. Still, I would recommend this book hands down!

This is an excellent read for beginning or established Indie writers. The most informative section is the listing of author fairs, writing contest and of course, her site librarybub. Seldom do I sign up or pay for a promotional add, but after researching her librarybub site, I have nothing to lose and the price is extremely affordable.

Highly recommend this work!

Insightful. Immediate. Inspiring. For authors who are new to selling their books, this book is a good hit. For authors--like myself--who have been around the block with marketing books ad nauseam, this book offers handy tips, clean perspectives, and nuggets of wisdom. I especially like that it wasn’t full of chapter after chapter of 10-step instructions like many of the marketing books written by “marketing experts” who repeat the stale ol’ honkings--and know nothing about being a writer. For example, Alinka’s advice on how to handle negative book reviews is the best advice I’ve read, and she said it in six sharp paragraphs. The information in this book is not just about the product and how/where to promote it; what we have here is Alinka’s personal experiences in how she sells her books in a world where the odds are against you. Who better to learn from than someone who is doing it successfully?

A lot of practical advice

There are many books on how to sell books online. This one separates itself by the number: 80,000, that's a lot!
Does it deliver? In many ways, it does. It has a ton of practical advice, some is decidedly better and more relevant than others, some seems very superficial, and could have been covered in much more detail.
Also the interview section at the end of the book takes up a too large part of the book, almost 20%.

I grabbed this free book off of NoiseTrade because at the time of writing, I'm a few months away from finishing a non-fiction book myself...so naturally the title caught my interest.

The book is a 54 page pdf. It is very straightforward and not drawn out. That means there's a lot of useful info packed into a short space. This is a book I will revisit closer to publishing time.

At first I thought this was just going to be another one of those books telling the same things over and over again. In a way it was, but this author also included pages of writing contests, places to get reviews, and other information that is quite helpful. I'm sure I'll be referring back to several pages as I work on marketing my own books.

**Reviewed By Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite (5 stars):**
How I Sold 80,000 Books: Book Marketing for Authors (Self Publishing through Amazon and Other Retailers) is a business/finance self-help book written by Alinka Rutkowska. The author writes children's books and has been an independent publisher as well as a coach for authors seeking to do the same. She introduces her topic with a word most of the non-business savvy world cringes from: marketing. And she discusses how marketing should begin almost before an author starts writing and certainly before selecting a title. Rutkowska presents the four Ps that are the ingredients to success in marketing an indie book. They are Product, Place, Price and Promotion. She thoroughly discusses each of these aspects of marketing, and illustrates each topic with examples from her experiences and useful links. In the section on Product, Rutkowska discusses the editing process and the three types of editors needed for any text before publication. In Promotion, she discusses giveaways and other promotional tools designed to make your book sell. She also includes a list of recommended readings and a bonus section containing six interviews with established authors who discuss their marketing strategies and their paths to success.

Alinka Rutkowska's business/finance self-help book, How I Sold 80,000 Books: Book Marketing for Authors (Self Publishing through Amazon and Other Retailers) is a veritable textbook for aspiring indie authors. The material presented within is densely packed and loaded with ideas, strategies and essential tips that are neatly organized, packaged and imparted in a conversational and highly accessible manner. And that's no mean feat for a book that has so much to offer. Rutkowska suggests that readers read this book several times, especially when they're preparing a book for publication, something she herself does, and I would have to agree.

I was very impressed with Rutkowska's coverage of her topic. While I've read a number of books on independent publishing, I've not encountered as complete and user-friendly a work on the marketing aspect. I found her presentation of her subject to be enthusiastic and entertaining. Rutkowska manages to infect her readers with the joy she takes in tackling the challenges of marketing a publication and making it into a best-seller. She even simplifies the intricacies of Amazon's publishing options and discusses the pros and cons of those somewhat arcane and complicated schemes. How I Sold 80,000 Books: Book Marketing for Authors (Self Publishing through Amazon and Other Retailers) is now my go-to book on the subject and it's most highly recommended.

Before you go any further, get a copy of How I Sold 80,000 Books: Book Marketing for Authors (Self-Publishing through Amazon and Other Retailers) by Alinka Rutkowska. Alinka takes you through the steps that she travelled in selling over 20 titles. Alinka is candid and provides the reader with everything for being a successful author. She also provides her spin on the 4Ps of Marketing: Price, Product, Placement and Promotion in selling your material from eBooks to paperback, with some nuggets that you may not have considered. One thing that Alinka emphasized is to acquire professional services from book cover design to editing. As a purchaser of How I Sold 80,000 Books by Alinka Rutkowska, you will receive her free eBook, 200 Book Marketing Tips.

I am currently creating my 2nd Edition of Get the Cheese, Avoid the Traps, even though initially I self-published and did quite well in the distribution and marketing of the guide. There were a lot of things that I will consider using in creating the next guide. Instead of merely using Amazon, I will also be using Ingram-Spark as well because I am interested in accessing other markets. While my goal is to acquire organic book reviews in How I Sold 80,000 Books, however, Alinka details the various types of book award contests throughout the U.S. and abroad which can offer your book great exposure. Great job, Alinka.

An excellent step by step for writers who are entering the confusing world of Independent writing (Indie). There is some very good information here, as well as some excellent interviews with authors who have made a living in the world of Indie writing

I would recommend this book and the steps in it for all authors who are setting out to write independently, however, you have to realize that there is a massive amount of work in the writing, editing, and self-publishing. The book does touch on that 'minor,' little issue, and hopefully, new writers will take this to heart before they set out.

This book is also a 'book magnet,' which means it's how the author is trying to get students into her classes. You can, if you wish, read to the end, take the good advice and steps, and then watch her free webinar and move on. Or, you can shell out a bunch of cash and take her course. I didn't take the course but still think her book is worth reading.

Well it's a certainly a book loaded with lots of ideas and useful information for new authors, seems to be aimed mainly at the american market though. All was going well until I got to the section on reviews then I began to frown, she asks friends to tick the reviews on amazon as helpful. She also gave out tips on how to get rid of 1 star reviews. This is then altering the whole review process, and made me think do other authors follow the same processes.

Hmm, from this point onwards I felt less inclined to read the book. Different books appeal to different people, some will think a book is a thrilling detective novel and will award it 5, for others they found it less so and award it maybe a 3. Each reviewer is reviewing it as they found it when the book was read. It seemed very disingenuous to be altering or removing reviews when they didn't agree with the writer.

What's happening here is basically a tutorial on the four P's of marketing structured towards writers, authors, and anyone else interested in writing a book.

It does not cover the actual writing of the book, though it does cover Product as polishing the draft, and getting it edited professionally, the cover done well, and so on. This is not a tutorial on writing it, just making it publishing ready.

Place, Price, and Promotion are covered in equal detail giving explanations for offline and online marketing for both digital and physical books.

This free ebook is actually quite informative and covers a lot of strategies for marketing any kind of book. In fact I was going to go with 3 stars, but just revised it after writing this review. It's that kind of quality.

Now that I have read this book, I can totally relate to how the author was able to sell 80,000 books! This book is a "must-read" for authors whether they self-publish or work with a publishing house. The book contains a wealth of information that will shed light on the importance for you, the writer, to be on top of your marketing strategy...even more so if you work with a publisher.

The author provides a multitude of references and tricks to get your book noticed. Thank you, Alinka, for writing such an inspiring and informative book. It gave me the boost I and confidence I needed to continue my marketing journey at a time where I felt like giving it up!
