Kelli Jean

Born and raised in Miami, Kelli Jean traded the tropical heat for the arctic. Now she deals with twenty-four hour daylight in the summer, zero sunlight in the winter, and believes the Northern Lights make up for the mind-boggling amount of ice and snow she has to put up with for seven months out of the year. She’s surrounded by mountains and ocean and sheep, and claims her bizarre sense of humor is what keeps her sane.
The insane don’t know they’re insane.
Kelli uses her imagination to create worlds she can escape to from the mundane tasks of everyday life, such as washing the damn dishes and vacuuming up Legos off the floor—and don’t get her started on the mad amount of cat hair on the end of the couch. She gave up on that a long time ago. When the household goes to sleep at night, she writes down everything that happened in her head while doing such tedious chores. But she enjoys living in her own head, so that’s pretty cool.

Ten Thousand Words is my first Kelli Jean book, but I know I’ll be reading more by this author in the future! I really enjoyed this one. Jean's writing is fantastic and I loved that Xanthe and Oliver’s love story wasn’t the same old same old. It’s a beautiful love story between an author who is unique and quirky and a gorgeous bearded photographer/model. The pair starts out as an unlikely couple, but they couldn’t be more right for one another.

I loved this couple together. I loved the way they met and the way their relationship progressed. Was it perfect? No. There was a little angst and a little drama, but nothing over the top. Ollie is one of those guys that could be a jerk at times, but then he’d say or do something so incredibly swoony, you couldn’t help but to completely adore him.
A picture is worth a thousand words

“When I’m able to sleep, I dream of you. I think of… everything- you’re smile, your laughter, the way you make me feel so blessed just to be allowed to know you.”

I think the best part of this story was watching the growth in both characters. The love from their counterpart made them both change for the better. Ollie seemed to bring Xanthe out of her shell some and showed her how truly beautiful she was. Xanthe changed Ollie’s initial perspective on people. No more judging people by the way they look or act, he gets to know them first.

There are a truly interesting and fantastic bunch of side characters in this book. All of Xanthe’s friends, Ollie’s BFF Trey and of course, Aunt Ellen made this book so much fun. This is a stand alone, but I really hope more books come along with some of these side characters. I need to know more about… what’s going on with them. Speaking of that, I thought that the little bit of mystery and the twists were great. It left me wanting more, that’s for sure!

If you’re looking for an original romance that has humor, steam, friendship, love and the best kinds of twists and turns, this is one I would recommend. Kelli Jean’s writing is fresh and impressive. I’m looking forward to reading more by her!

First and foremost Kelli Jean is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I love reading and most books, but there is something so unique about her writing. I love the way she tells a story and makes you feel it.

Xanthe is a famous author and while when I manage being successful at something you love is the greatest accomplish, she is struggling. She is struggling with the stigma that comes from the type of stories she writes. She is struggling with people accepting her. She is struggling with her fears and insecurities. All these things just made me love her more, she felt so real and genuine to me.

Ollie is famous in his own right, as a photographer, but that’s not what brings him into Xanthe’s life. No instead of being the photographer for her book covers, he is asked to be the model. This isn’t something he is happy about and he isn’t afraid to speak his mind. At first, Ollie comes off as an arrogant and self-centered prick, but it didn’t take long for my opinions to begin changing.

When Ollie and Xanthe’s worlds collide the story just took off and I was completely addicted. I wanted to see what happened next, I wanted to see when the truths would unfold and what would happen. I loved how Kelli introduced the two characters, it was unique, but also added so much depth to the story.

I loved this plot from the beginning. It pulls you in so quickly and doesn’t let up. It was unpredictable and while the story is longer in length it moved so quickly. Ten Thousand Words was completely unexpected in every way. There was a mystery vibe I didn’t expect, plenty of angst and heart, and absolutely beautifully written. If you haven’t read a book by Kelli Jean yet I definitely recommend.

Xanthe is a 29 year old author from Amsterdam who's heading in New York in a book signing. She has signed up with Dreamstone Publishing, after being self published so far and she now has to show up to promote her books with their new covers. Covers that have Oliver Fairfax on them.

Oliver is actually a photographer in Amsterdam and when the publishing house reached out to him, he was excited. Until they told him that they needed him as a cover model and not for his photography skills. Although, he wasn't thrilled about that, his partner Trey told him to go for it, because it would be good for their studio.

Oliver is now heading to New York to make the photoshooting and attend the book signings he signed up for. On his way there, an incident helps him meet Xanthe and they hang out together at New York, getting closer to each other.

But there are things that Oliver doesn't know about Xanthe and when the truth will unravel , things will get messed up for both of them. Will they be able to forgive each other and start over again?

Can I just say how much Xanthe surprised me with her character and I was pleasantly surprised, alright! She was this quiet, shy looking nerd and moving on we could see a totally different side of her, all feisty, slutty and fierce girl! I was taken aback by her and I was amused. As for Ollie, I have to admit that I liked him, but there were a few things about him that didn't wow me. Like his reaction when the secret was out. Like later on when he acted like a pussy. But he was awesome too and sexy and protective and generally he made up for his mistakes as well.

I had a hundred thousand words of Xanthe. I needed to show her, show the entire world, that those words weren't wasted.

I loved very much the side characters, like aunt Elle!! Oh my god, talk about a secondary character that you want an entire book just for her!! Seriously!! I'm a little curious about the other characters and if they have books of their own stories already, because there were so much going on with them, that I got a little lost to be honest.

I liked the suspense, the angst and the drama and I don't think it was over the top, since it was equally measured with funny and sexy moments as well. I loved the writing of this author and although this was my first read by her, it certainly won't be my last. If you need a funny, steamy and angsty story give it a chance and you may fall in love with Oliver's beard and his redhead minx!

This is a story about an independent paranormal romance writer that gets picked up by a large publishing company. On her way to New York for a book signing, she literally gets run down by the man she typecast for the Hero of her series. He just happens to not know who she is and when he starts talking to her about the author of the book and how she must be crazy (which she is just a bit touchy about), she decides to NOT give him her pen name. Unfortunately, they both start falling for each other and she struggles to find the right time to tell him the truth.

I really enjoyed Xanthe for most of the book...she was very independent and strong and could take care of herself despite going through some horrific things and having amazing friends and family she could lean on.

Oliver ~for the most part~ was very sweet and charming. However, he has never been in love and it's extremely obvious. He has become "Super Alpha" and while very loving, it was also a bit annoying. The sex was very hot though!

description

It was wonderful getting to know Xanthe's family and close circle of friends but slowly we find out that there's more to them than meets the eye. Things take a sort of morbid twist and I'm not sure I really liked that. However, it does help you get more of an idea about the Hero in the next book, Ten Thousand Lies.

While I would have been happy with just the quirks of dating an author, the quirks of a metro sexual dating a more free spirited person and the quirks of dealing with a jealous non-girlfriend hookup, the story has the aforementioned dark side in addition to a crazy stalker and the requisite bitchy relative.

Besides the dark twist, I really enjoyed the story. I love the depth the author puts into her work and all the details she brings in. I especially loved the part of the story that was the basis for the title of the book. Sooo romantic!

I am interested in the next book, let's just hope it's not too dark!

5+++ Xanthe Love Stars

This is one of those profound books that takes your breathe away. A totally new author for me, and I've sworn to try some new authors this year. Although Kelli Jean isn't new she is to me. Sometimes I like to read smutty reads, other times I love to read short and sweet reads, I can enjoy angsy reads and then there are times I want PURE GOLD, a book that takes me places, takes me to the Unknown to a place where I can dream and where it gives real depth into the story so I truly know all characters involved. Yeh this is that book...

So what's it about?
Xanthe is a fantasy erotic author under a pen name keeping her identity secret she's very quiet, introverted to the world yet she has a close knit bunch of friends and family around her. Still she keeps herself secret until she decides to become known and show her face for the new book that's just been released. Plus she wants to meet her Donovan (hero) in her book come to life for her readers. Except her first meet with Oliver doesn't go as planned. Ollie is Donovan on that cover and he's also a photographer and model in his work. So he's well known in the public eye, he is also a ladies man! He is known for his manwhore ways among the public eye. But Xanthe gives him the benefit of the doubt and let's him in, gets to know him and finds herself in the process..

"I've never felt this way about anyone either," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want nothing more than to hand you everything that I am."

Do you judge a book by its cover? (I'm a book whore) so I'd say sometimes I do and it's easy to do that right? Yet Ollie sees what Xanthe is, her true character, how beautiful she really is. In many ways these pair aren't fit you could say that, yet beauty is what's underneath and in the most weirdish way these two fit together perfectly.

Xanthe was a Pandora's box of wonderment.

I'd say though Ollie knew what he wanted from get go, and Xanthe knew love so they learnt from each other gradually over time and became each other's half.

 photo BC33C415-42DD-4886-AE70-C5C3DAC7861D_zps5xrr2waa.jpg

The Special moments
What I loved though was that Ollie was all MANNNN he knew his body well and when they got down to it boy did his Alpha ways come out. And then that unleashed Xanthes sublime character, gah those moments were intense, raw and beautiful.

My home. My true self. My reflection. My everything.
 photo kissingbitegif_zps047d428d.gif

The only thing I suppose that I had a problem with was the length, in longer books you can get bored and breakdown of communication can occur. So there were the lulls and the highs. But you got to see them learn their ways, struggle, laugh, enjoy, and above all love.

Would I recommended this.. Yes 100% yes I highlighted the whole damn book, the way the author explained things, how one chapter leaded to the next. It really was a page turner and I'm heading for a book hanger I don't really have time for LOL.

Just know this, this book is a standalone contemporary romance but it is also a good set up for books to come. This is giving us a look into where Kelli is taking the rest of the series.. So yes you can read it as a standalone but I'm really looking forward to where Kelli's going with this and from what I've read and seen so far eeeek I'm jumping up and down at the thought.. #JustSaying.

Take the plunge guys and read it.

Kelli Jean did it again.. she completely stole my heart with her Nola's Own series ( If you've not read that series, you are totally missing out on one of the most amazing book couples ever) but she managed to do the same thing with Ten Thousand Words.

Xanthe Malcolm is a beautiful woman with a huge heart surrounded by one of the best group of friends, a furry assassin, and a hilarious aunt ( her aunt had me snot cry laughing several times). But Xanthe has always been a little different. Witnessing the death of her mother and grandmother at a young age helped shape Xanthe into the woman she is today.. a woman that has so much love and laughter on the outside but she has to put the darker side of her psyche onto paper.. she needs an outlet. That outlet comes through writing stories.. stories that are hot but also dark.. .her pen name Elaine H. Ford lets her escape and be someone else.

With writing , I found strength and courage to be the person I am. On paper, i could release the images in my mind, see them come to life, and share them if I so desired..

Oliver Fairfax.. this drool worthy specimen of a man is not only a much sought after photographer, he's also gorgeous and the face that Xanthe see's for the main character in her book series.. He's kind of her muse... This sexy brooding man is who she see's when her stories take her away. When it's time to make the cover for her book... no other man will do but Oliver.

When Oliver and Xanthe first met.. Oliver was pretty much a jerk and Xanthe was very unimpressed.. so she kept her identity a secret. Not letting Ollie know that she was the author putting him on the cover of her book. Oliver manages to apologize for his jerkiness and Xanthe eventually is swayed by his charm. However, she keeps her secret for a while. Ollie does eventually find out and from that point forward we are swept up into one of the most combustible, sexy, heart squeezing stories... Their relationship was like fire with both being so hard headed at times. But their chemistry... now that was just like a bomb waiting to ignite. And their feelings for each other just jumped off the pages.

While the relationship with Oliver and Xanthe is the main focus, there is a side story going on that adds a little suspense .. turning a love story into... something MORE. I loved the extra story going on and it opens up lots of opportunity for other stories in this series to feed off of.

I really did love this story.. I loved Xanthe and Oliver but I also loved all of the side characters that made this story come more to life. Kelli Jean has such a talent for not only making you care for the main character/ couples in her book, but she makes you feel equally invested in those around her main H/h. Sometimes with other books when the side characters are brought in, it feels more like filler. Not so with Kelli.. All of her characters jump off the pages and make you laugh and smile. There is nothing better than when you get to the final page in a book and you have this huge smile on your face.. knowing that you just took a journey and met characters that will be with you for a long time. And that's what Kelli did here....

I absolutely hate it when a friend recommends a book to me, one she loves so much, and I just can't seem to like it. #coneofshame. Sorry Katy.

Ten Thousand Words is the story of a quirky paranormal-romance author who falls for her book cover model, photographer, Oliver. The first third of the book I really was into. I liked how they met and how she chose to not disclose her pen name. It was cute watching him talk about this author he's modeling for when he has no clue it's HER.

Though this book is very insta-love (willing to make life changes within a week of meeting), the sheer length of the book has just kicked in my book ADD. The book seems very long for the story within its covers (435 pages) and I didn't feel like hardly anything happened but useless drama for the second third of the book. The last third has a twist I just can't understand, much less believe. Future books seem to be based off this plot device, a vigilante sex trafficking organization of sorts. Huh?

Another annoyance I had is with the hero, Oliver. He was so childish and reactionary where the heroine, Xanthe, was concerned. He would do or say hurtful things and within minutes realize his wrong and be tripping over himself to fix it. Naturally, she wouldn't answer his calls, block his phone, texts, whatever. He was jealous over everything related to Xanthe and I kept thinking, "You've known her a week. Get over it! You have zero say in what she does in her day to day life!"

 photo 1A4248BA-67DD-4106-B6DA-0A77B0793830_zpsawj9opr0.gif

So I'm going to cut my losses, knowing what future books hold for this undercover "organization." It just feels like they are trying to stick a square peg into a round hole. Doesn't fit for me...

Moving on...

Ten Thousand Words isn't your typical love story.
The characters are unique, the situations Xanthe and Ollie find themselves in are funny, heartwarming, gut-wrenching and sometimes just plain beautiful. There's also a dose of mystery woven into the pages of this book that you don't see very often. This IS NOT a boy meets girl, boy chases girl, boy gets girl kind of story and I absolutely LOVED that.

Actually, it's why I love Kelli Jean's stories so much. They're original and they instantly suck you in. Her side/supporting characters are also awesome and they feel REAL, too. You end up feeling just as connected to them as you do the main characters and that's not an easy thing to achieve as an author.

Let's start with Xanthe... first of all that name... I love it!
 photo ff85567c68df271f6e56051690a7f117_zpsf7utai5x.jpg

Xanthe is my kind of chick. Not only is she super cool, smart and totally badass but she's also a WRITER! I absolutely loved reading about a woman I had so much in common with. (ha ha) She's witty and CURVY and vulnerable and strong and insecure and confident and nerdy and quirky... she's just so Xanthe.

 photo glassesbeautifulgirlredhairredheadwoman-5b207c3515e8b100c544b7eac7a65303_h_large_zpsubzshovi.jpg

And then there's Ollie AKA Oliver Fairfax. Great googlie mooglie.... that man will melt the panties off any woman. And let me just say that Kelli Jean did an EXCELLENT job casting her cover model for this book because Franggy is IT! I mean down to the whiskey colored eyes and the bushy beard... hot damn!!!

 photo 10945397_704646192987537_1583715840702747147_n_zpscs8dko5n.jpg

But Oliver is a lot more than a pretty face. He's thoughtful, he's confident, he's caring and yes, before meeting Xanthe he was also a little shallow. It isn't until he takes the time to learn who she is that he starts to find parts of himself, too. He realizes how much he's been missing out of life. She's the piece of his heart that he never realized he was missing and reading his POV as he comes to that realization will have butterflies going crazy in your stomach. Seriously Ollie is totally swoon worthy. You'll definitely need to make some room on your BBF list for sure.

 photo MjIiLCJmIjoianBnIn0_zpskmldzbmb.jpg

I don't like to cover too much of the plot in my reviews because I'd hate to spoil anything but trust me when I say, you've never read a romance quite like this one before. Kelli's writing is beautiful and flows amazingly well. She pulls you into her worlds and within minutes you're entranced and falling in love.

I highly recommend this book!!!
Here are some of my fav quotes:

"I could feel, hear, and smell only him. He was sinking beneath my skin, branding me from the inside out."

"I'm scared, too... I never knew pain like this existed. But I'm so grateful that I do. Simply by being you, you've made me take a good, hard look at my life. All I want is to be a man who is worthy of you, Xanthe."

"I'm not bothering with you, Xanthe. I belong with you."

And one more pic of Ollie just because... *sigh*

5 Xanthe Love Stars

There is something so special about Kelli Jean. Nothing within her stories or about her characters is ordinary. She has yet to stay between the lines and each time she delivers both powerful and profound love stories.

It is hard to accurately put down the feeling that I get when I get pulled into a book by this author as my first experience, NOLA’s Own, took me out of my comfort zone into a mystic realm of love. Just when I thought I could not be more moved, Kelli Jean writes Ten Thousand Words…her BEST work to date.

Ten Thousand Words is an unexpected love between a quirky and deeply private author Xanthe Malcolm and world-famous photog/model Oliver Fairfax. Nothing about this relationship is ordinary. From the initial crash of bodies, judged identities, and fast moving infatuation, everything is set in that unique realm of ambiguity and awe. A beautifully forward and lust-struck man and a reclusively sassy smart woman find a passionate deep connection that is beyond whirlwind. This is nothing either has ever experienced…

 photo 084582a7-536a-4d29-9697-0534e66f4936_zpsboplczr6.jpg

Just days from meeting…who is Xanthe Malcolm? What does Ollie Fairfax want with her? How can that feeling of falling even be possible?

Hidden in a world of fiction, fandom, and photography, neither Ollie nor Xanthe have been living in the light of day…in a time of “pure truths.” Oliver has shallowly moved from one woman to another with no second thought while Xanthe has moved only within the safety net of her friends and family. The only “real” they have is this new way they both feel so deeply and this overbearing way they can completely crush one another. This chemistry is beyond the realm of normal…it is all consuming…soul stealing…eye opening…

 photo 5eb607d9-b097-41d3-aa82-7a7897500d0c_zpsmxnj6rzw.jpg

I wish I could write a review that could better explain this story. I find myself describing it as “beautifully odd.” Her lyrical and spiritual writing lends to feeling the dark/intriguing settings and the emotional understanding of characters, inherently flawed yet genuinely perfect. There is total contrast of themes as the CRAZY of love seems legit…the macabre seems just…the pain seems necessary. I was so invested in this story, holding my breath at the suspense, turned on by the intimacy and rocked by the unique foundation laid down for this series.

 photo b70b1cdc-59f9-40cb-b740-e4b3030b59fa_zpsjw4yuqvn.jpg

So, yes, I found the characters to be a bit off…the love to be quite fast and furious…the story a bit dark… but for me Ollie and Xanthe were completely magical. There is so much more to this love and this journey, but together I believe they will find it …I cannot wait to get back into their world!!! xoxo

Once again Kelli Jean creates a world that many will want to live in. In this new series we meet a whole new set of awesome characters. Xanthe is this cool author who surrounds herself with lifelong friends who would and has done unthinkable things for her.

Her best friends Jaime, Ricki, and Ronen crack me up! I laughed at almost every mention of them. They are definitely people I would love to have my back and hang out with in real life. Oliver Fairfax is this smoking hot, sophisticated man who takes amazing photos durning the day and knows how to rock his woman’s world in the bedroom at night.

This book has a deeper story within it that I can’t wait to explore in the rest of the series. There are funny, light moments… sexy, steaming-hot moments… angst filled moments… secretive and dark moments… this story has it all. The writing in this book really impressed me. I’ve been a fan of Kelli Jean's from the beginning; her NOLA’s Own series is phenomenal and unforgettable. I’m looking forward to uncovering secrets and diving deeper into this world with the books to come.

DNF @ 61% and as I read that much I can rate it with stars as well. 2 'me being generous' stars

It was difficult for me to start this book as the writing style, genre where the complete opposite of the book that I’d read before. I even gave the opportunity to sleep on the finished book before starting the new one. Still tough though. After my half hour tram journey to work I was still unsure but on my lunch break which was longer than I intended it to be, which I do most of the time. Psst, it’s a secret, not that my boss cares. I was finally smiling. Good sign!

I loved this up till the 40% mark and then it just went tits up! I got to 61 % and had to DNF I just couldn’t continue as it was getting a tad tedious, actually extremely tedious. I had to push myself through the last 21 %. And it was painful.

Xanthe had a stalker and a vivid imagination but most people thought that under her pen name she is mentally unstable.

Both main characters are strong individuals but there once again there is a lack of communication.
I liked Xanthe she is true to herself, leads deep and meaningful relationships, sassy, smart, a total dork and dresses shabby chic.

Oliver Fairfax is a photographer, now turned model. Boy is he judgmental and a snob. But then he goes all insta love and the woman I went to spend the rest of my life with, bla, bla, bla. Xanthe was in same cases just too closed off.

There was too much unnecessary drama for me. A former stalker, two ex-lovers, secrets and lies. A secret society, or an underground movement.

This just didn’t work for me.

Overall Opinion: This is a tough one to rate. Did I enjoy it? Yes for the first part, but there were so many things thrown into the story in the second half that I felt like the author was just marking off a check list...(only click tag if you really want it spoiled)

It just didn't work for me. I liked the first part of the book, but didn't get a lot of the second half. I don't understand why a lot of it was added, especially when some events didn't get fully explained or end properly. It could've been two different stories IMO, and I would've only liked the first one.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Xanthe and Oliver's story. Xanthe is a paranormal romance author, and she is on her way to New York (from Amsterdam) for a book convention. Oliver is a well known photographer/model/playboy in Amsterdam and he was hired to be a cover model for her book. When they literally bump into each other in the airport, Oliver doesn't know that she is the same author he was hired to work for and says some judgemental comments that make it hard for Xanthe to come clean. They start up a whirlwind romance, but something makes them separate. They reunite when back in Amsterdam and eventually get a HFN ending (after some sexy times, funny moments, and lots of dramatic elements).

POV: This alternated between Xanthe and Oliver's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Ok. So many things were in the story that the pacing just felt...off. I'm not sure I can pinpoint it, but I felt like the story could've ended well much sooner without the addition of many of the different things in the 2nd half. I never skimmed though.

Instalove: Yes and no. I felt like there was an instant and strong connection, and they probably fell in love in the first 6 days which is pretty instant too -- but they didn't acknowledge the feelings until later.

H rating: 3 stars. Oliver. Yes, he was a manwhore. But he found the err in his ways, and wanted to change to become a better man and deserving of the h. He made lots of mistakes, but he also had the sweetest inner dialogue that made it up for me. He was a hard one to rate, so I'm going with middle of the road.

h rating: 3.5 stars. Xanthe. She was quirky and a bit dark, but I liked her. Loved her loyalty and relationships with her friends and family. I was frustrated with her keeping things from the H at times.

Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed.

Heat level: Moderate. They have some hot scenes and chemistry.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: Yes. Mentions of condoms, std status, and birth control.

OW/OM drama:Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had ok closure, but I think it left it pretty open for another book with what I would call a HFN ending. I needed more commitments to be made (and all questions answered) for me to feel good about the ending.

How I got it: I paid the $0.99 on Amazon.

Safety: Safe with big exceptions. There was a lot of OW drama, and the H was an obvious manwhore in his past that came to haunt him and his relationship with the h...not for all of my 'safety' ladies.

Beware of Spoilers!

Star Ratings:
Heroine (Xanthe): 29yrs – 4/5
Hero (Oliver): 26yrs – 3/5 – he needed to do a bit of growing up
Plot: 4/5
Grovel: wish the h held out a little more after the first epic mistake by the H
Cheating: H went on a date with OW just to hurt h
HEA: yes but not a very good epilogue

Triggers: Thanks to the author for the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book
•Marijuana use by main characters
•In detail description of H remembering fucking other woman and how much he enjoyed it
•Author states it is a dark read but none of what I read in this was ‘dark’

Average score: 3.5/5

Best Line: H: “Holy shit, I’m a complete and utter fuckwad!”

H to h: “I’m not bothering with you, Xanthe. I belong with you.”
All together now…

Worst Lines: “She reached up and tugged out her knot, her thick curls catching streaks of sunlight. It shone with a dark inner fire.” – didn’t like the ending of this sentence as it didn’t really make sense to me

H to h: “I promise you, it’s not all sex”

When I guy tells you “It’s not all about the sex” WHILST trying to change your mind about having sex with him and seducing you….it shows that IT IS ALL ABOUT THE SEX and what happens next? The woman sleeps with him

Personal Review:
This was a love story between an author and her male book-cover model who conveniently looked like the hero in her romances.

I usually have an issue with a story with a younger H and older h (regardless of how long the age gap is) because men generally mature slower than women and my god does Oliver prove this. The amount of times he shows his immaturity by walking away from Xanthe and deliberately hurting her feelings only to go running back to apologise to her was extremely annoying!

Random Ramblings:
•The number of times ‘large breasts’ was mentioned was ridiculous considering none of the times were referring to the h
•The h’s OTHER secret didn’t really fit in with the rest of the story
•Another h and H who like to tell me how cute and good-looking they are…continuously

•Didn’t like how H asked h to dress up for him…and then mentioning several times how she is not his type and gorgeous she is when she dresses up and doesn’t look like a nerd
•After reading the H waffle on at times of his love for h I was like…

•Loved Rex and Ricki!

Overall Feeling:
Sappy love story

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, which licked me immediately.

Xanthe, which I pronounced numerous ways in numerous voices throughout, is a paranormal erotic romance author, who writes under the pen name of Elaine H. Ford. She’s heading to NY from her hometown of Amsterdam, for a book signing. She is due to be joined by her latest cover model, who she had picked as a precise match for her fiction hero, Donovan Colt.

Oliver Fairfax is a renowned photographer, more famously known for his skirt chasing amongst the beautiful people he surrounds himself with. He’s flattered to be chosen as a cover model, but curious about meeting the author, given his current opinion of her mental state, having started the macabre, yet wanton novel.

Having literally bowled Xanthe over, their first meeting is less than perfect, with Xanthe feeling a little deflated meeting Oliver, whilst Oliver is immediately enamoured by this little weirdo hipster.

This is the first book I’ve read of Kelli Jean’s, and I was delighted to be hooked immediately. I enjoyed the instant attraction, which isn’t my usual style, but the goofy, endearing way it was handled was a credit to Kelli’s skill.

The story is packed full of great characters, which we got the opportunity to get to know quite well. They were the usual mix of stereotypical personalities, but it worked..extremely well.

I loved how the main characters were drawn to each other, and how their increased interactions started to change their judgements and ideals within themselves. Their very different lives would never be the same.

”Xanthe was a Pandora’s box of wonderment that I couldn’t wait to unleash into my world.”

Xanthe had had a lot to contend with growing up, but had managed to surround herself with extremely protective friends, as well as her hysterical great aunt. Oliver had the utmost appeal, as well as an opiate-laced beard of epicness. His road to happiness was a pleasure to study.

It was an absolute thrill to devour, and I struggled to put it down during a very busy weekend. I am delighted to see that there is a follow on expected in June, focusing on one of the other couples from the story. This story is packed with so much information, that we should expect a lot more to follow, which makes my heart very happy <3

This was the first book I've read from this author, and considering how much I enjoyed this story, it won't be the last.

It had eveything I like in a book... instalust, sexy times, drama, angst, strong main characters, chemistry, suspense, mystery, etc.

Xanthe was an interesting character. She was strong, feisty, intelligent, independent, fiercely loyal, sexy, and cool. Oliver, although he was a tad younger (26 to her 29), was handsome, smart, gifted, loyal, sweet, considerate, protective, and very alpha. The two of them just worked. There was no room to doubt their connection, their chemistry, or their love.

The author did a great job with both character and plot development. For instance, the side characters played such a huge role in the story that it feels wrong to characterize them as minor players. They were so much more than that. I couldn't help but be intrigued by each of their back stories.

I was a bit disappointed with the ending. There was all this lead up to Oliver finally finding out what the real deal was with Ricki, Ronen, and Rex, and their secret work, but this wasn't revealed to the reader. BOO!!

I'm guessing more information will be available within other books in the series so I'm consoling myself with that.

Man what? The ending just kinda ticked me off more!
I honestly really liked this story till about the part where he had his little tantrum :( after that moment I think I was just annoyed with it all...
He was overly in love with her in 4 days and in my mind frig I was building a monument of xanthe in my head! holy it was bad but I was like alright he loves her a bunch I'll get over it .. Then his little hissy fit happened then it went down hill .. How he talked drove me nuts then the whole mama and papa ..
And now the ending where I. Know nothing about there group and what they do.. I was like yes I'm gonna get some good stuff and then it ends and I'm in the dark BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The beginning of this book was so good like top 3 best books of this year, sadly way too good to be true.

The last half of this book was stupid, terrible, unnecessary, confusing, and just overall WTF.
I am not even kidding when I tell you that this author threw about 20 different things out of thin air in the last half of this book.

I suggest reading the first 100-160 pages and then when you see what I mean, STOP and make your own ending up.

Alright, this is going to be a loaded review, but I'm going to try to keep it as light as possible. It boils down to one simple fact: I did not like this.

This story started out with so much potential, the first chapter brought TEARS to my eyes. It began by using a sort of mixed-media approach in the form of an essay for a final exam, to reveal the female lead, Xanthe’s, family history. Xanthe's loss felt palpable. As a result, she struggled with depression, which was discussed, and she began use her writing as an outlet and a means of healing. However, her writing was regarded as "tortured" and dark:
“she was seen as a sick person in need of help. What she had needed were people encouraging her, not judging her ... her ability to create amazing tales was discredited simply for the subject matter.”
Xanthe began writing under an alias to avoid the stigma. In my opinion, this is a cool storyline, I could get behind it. But it was poorly executed.

Xanthe hooks up with this dude who's a photographer-slash-model (but he doesn't really want to be a model) Ollie. There's a series of miscommunications between the two and they get in a totally wild argument because Ollie feels betrayed Xanthe wasn't entirely open about her writing alias. Xanthe and Ollie's relationship began during a long-distance flight from Amsterdam to New York, the two developed a connection talking over 7 hours and that's what spurred them to link up after the plane had touched down. Fun fact: Things like plane rides where you're put in close spatial proximity to strangers for long periods of time instill a false sense of intimacy meaning you're more likely to initiate personal conversations (shout out Criminal Minds and my BA in Psych).

Needless to say, I didn't get their relationship. I can get behind stories where the characters don't initially click, heck, seeing a relationship BLOOM is one of my favourite things about romances. This whole relationship was something else entirely. It felt weird to me. There were all sorts of behavioural characters that were sending off warning bells in my head like DANGER DANGER this guy is an asshole. In fact, this was a storyline with characters that rubbed me in entirely the wrong way. I can see the appeal. However, for me personally, Oliver in particular came across as judgmental, condescending, and overbearing. Xanthe would try to tell him something and he repeatedly cut her off. I'm all for flawed characters. I understand that we as humans are flawed. We are not perfect. However, I felt that this story presented flawed characters veiled as perfect characters. You could argue that because I’m so annoyed by Oliver's character it should signify that I was at least invested in the characters? But in all honesty, I was just hopeful the story would turn around.

Both Oliver and Xanthe have this belief that the other is unlike anyone else they’ve ever met *vomits*.

The descriptions had me visualizing Ollie as an animal (I have nothing against body hair), and bestiality is something I am against. Exhibit A:
“There was nothing better than waking up to Oliver Fairfax leaving a trail of soft, bushy kisses down my back”

Exhibit B:
“I wanted to rub all of me against his lightly furred self”
Like ... OK, I get it. This man apparently has a banging beard, how many different ways are you going to bring it up?! PLEASE CHILL OUT.

There was one scene in particular that addressed a condom breaking during sex, which isn’t an occurrence that books talk about often; I liked that there was mention of that because it’s something that really does happen, and raising awareness for safe sex is always important. So definite props for that.

The book does start with a forewarning that it contains dark subject matter that may be triggering. There was mention of rape that I found problematic. There’s description of a character having had their “soul raped”, which I found to be an insulting insinuation. In another instance, a character threatens to have someone raped from behind. I understand that rape is something that occurs and deserves to be addressed, however, within the actual context of the story, it was included in situations I felt were unnecessary.

I thought Xanthe's great-aunt Ellen was another character who had so much potential, but she succumbed to the stereotype of the eccentric old lady, who in this case, had a unique penchant for good weed. There was a quote of hers that I enjoyed:
“It’s hard to categorize books. Each story is a world unto itself. But if there’s a general theme, I suppose some people like to be guided in the right direction”

In terms of the other minor characters, I found it very difficult to distinguish between them. This may be because I was not particularly engaged in the story. There was Jaime, Rex, Trey, Ronan, Gabriella, Bianca, Ricki, Jones, and god knows how many others but they're all a blur in my head. AH there was also a “sassy Puerto Rican makeup artist”, I'm still shaking my head at that.

I'm sorry this review was such a downer, these are just my thoughts and opinions, please don't hate me.

I was kindly provided an ARC copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is my first Kelli Jean book and I was pleasantly surprised! Author falls in love with the model on the cover of her book. If that’s not a great premise I don’t know what is.

Ollie was a local socialite, and his face being on the cover of a book had Amsterdam buzzing. No one paid attention to me. No one even knew I lived in the same city as the man who represented my heart’s secret hero. And I was totally cool with that.

Xanthe is a famous author, although she writes under a pen name because she’s struggled with her insecurities over what she writes her whole life. Her books are full of horrors, which derived from some terrible experiences in her childhood, and people’s reaction to them isn’t always positive. She’s struggled with depression, and people picking at her mind. So when she meets on a flight the guy she’s chosen as model for her hero and he’s a bit mean about her story, she decides not to tell him that she’s the mind behind that story.

Oliver’s life revolves around photography, and when he’s asked to model for the cover of some books he agrees because it could help his career as a photographer. He never imagined that his life could change so much. There are a whole lot of fans who are really passionate about those books. You know how overwhelming us fangirls can get! Ollie’s always been around models, so his world was very different from Xanthe’s, but somehow he gets really involved with her, even when he finds out her true identity. The whole plot was really original.

Her very existence was a balm to a heart I hadn’t even known had been aching for her my whole life.

I really enjoyed the development of their relationship, it was so cute and funny because they come from two opposite world, and the collision was explosive. I loved how Xanthe’s personality changed Ollie’s way of living; he was judgy and kind of a prick at first. Their relationship moved a little too fast at some times for my liking, and the book could have maybe worked better with a little less drama. But overall it wasn’t over the top, and it was actually a page turner. Especially when the plot got more complicated with the return of someone from Xanthe’s past.

I also loved the side characters, they all added something to the story, and the setting, which is mostly Amsterdam.

Romance, humor, frienship, love, suspense, all in one book. If you like a lot of twists and turns you’ll love this one.

*The author provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review*

Oliver, the hero, is absolutely fucking hot. There’s no other way to say it. With his beard and his strong build, he’s a real looker. He’s temperamental and hot blooded and possessive. A down right alpha male, if you ask me. It’s been a while since I’ve read about such an amazing alpha male, let me tell you that. He isn’t afraid of going after what he wants and will stop at nothing to make it his. He’s also an amazing freakin’ kisser and he’s hot in bed. As if you didn’t already realize that :P

But, he’s also a gentleman when he wants to be. He’s sweet and he’s thoughtful. He brings Xanthe her favorite flowers all the time and leaves everything in a heartbeat to be with her. She’s his Project of Love – Ten Thousand Words to Xanthe. That thing he does, his ultimate grand gesture to win Xanthe over absolutely melts my heart. The love he possesses for her is so deep, pure and passionate that there’s no escaping it. He adores his mother and is smitten by Xanthe’s great aunt. His best friend is his brother in everything but blood. So, yeah, his family is important to him. There’s not much he wouldn’t do for them.

Xanthe, the heroine, is really amazing. Her character is well thought out and flows beautifully. She’s dealing with the loss of her mother and grandmother. They’ve been dead for sometime now, but they’re always with Xanthe, her biggest supporters, her protectors and her shelters in her heart. She’s smart and quirky and love to immerse herself in her little world that she’s created, which consists of her best friends, her dad and her great aunt. She’s feisty and doesn’t take shit from anyone. She’s a little quick to judge people, but doesn’t hesitate to give second chances. This is a quality that I absolutely admire in her as a person. She is one of the strongest persons there is. After an incident that left her recluse, she still picks herself up and goes about her life. That in itself is a great thing and just goes on to show how strong a person she is really.

She complements Oliver beautifully. It’s as if they are truly made for each other. And, post the initial hiccups they had, they make a stunning couple s madly in love, it melts your heart every time you read about them! <3

The story is exceedingly well written with great characters and an amazing flow bringing out the story line phenomenally. The elements of suspense in the story don’t hurt either. If anything, they add a lot to the plot.

I would recommend this story to all the die hard romantics out there because it’s absolutely amazing! :D

Three Middle-of-the-Road Stars

There was a lot I liked about this book, and a lot I didn't. It started rough, I enjoyed the middle, and then I disliked the end.

I'm a sample reader. If I don't like the sample, I don't remark on the book at all. I mean, I didn't read it, so why would I critique it? This book by Kelli Jean was the rare book that I bought without reading the sample by a new-to-me author. I must have been intrigued by the blurb ("reclusive author" was likely the bait that hooked me), plus it was probably a buy-early deal. I really don't remember. At 4% into the book I was regretting the impulse. I felt certain it was headed in the direction of a cliche, where the weird girl with a gay best friend and a tragic past falls for the hot guy. I decided to give this book a shot the length of an average sample, somewhere around 10%, and so I read on. By then, I was feeling it.

Kelli Jean is a good writer with great flow and interesting characters. All it took for me to get buried in this book was the first scene of mid-flight dialogue between Xanthe and Oliver. By the time these two are hailing a cab at the airport, they are touching each other's hair follicles - auburn curls and generous beard, respectively. Xanthe and Oliver are captivated by each other, and watching them let go of preconceptions was a lot of fun and the best part of the book. Xanthe, in particular, is a fully-layered character. She was full of surprises for Oliver - and the reader.

We learn that Oliver is far from perfect, even though he might look like the man of Xanthe's dreams, and certainly her very vivid imagination. He is temperamental; he pouts; he's jealous; he spanks without clearing with permission first; and there is other-woman drama that gets detailed attention. As in details about past conquests. Sorry, not what I want to read about in a romance novel.

I pretty much liked Xanthe, except for the fact that she had to keep forgiving Oliver for his petulant behavior, and I was a little sick of hearing about her pits and tits swamping with sweat. Her tragedy and secrets unroll in the second half of the book, where Oliver gets to prove his commitment. I must say, he does get some fabulous, heart-stopping lines. (Mini-swoon for Kelli Jean's talent there).

Then, in the last 20% of this book or so, I felt like I was sitting in the middle of a spin-off episode for what must be intended as book two of this series. The transition, though foreshadowed in weird and inconsistent ways, was just very, very odd. It didn't work. At all. I think I'll pull an Oliver, and stomp off in a tantrum.

Overall, a stimulating story, that just suffered from one substantial issue and one tiny issue. My bigger issue was TOO MANY SEX SCENES…this is a pet peeve of mine, lately, with the New Adult Genre. This story had so much going for it, an interesting premise with her being a writer and Ollie as the new cover model of her series. I loved that…and the sub-plots are also very intriguing too. I just don't get why she felt the need to add so many full on descriptive sex scenes, sometimes it's ok to leave some of the scenes details to our imaginations. I'm not sure if I'll keep reading this series…I might…I'll just have to do a lot of skimming through the sexy stuff if need be. My other issue is the excessive amounts of sappiness, especially from Oliver...actually entirely from Oliver.

Ten Thousand Words is my first book by Kelli Jean. The blurb intrigued me and I just had to read the whole book, to read about Xanthe, Oliver, and the plot twist. The book took me by surprise. I adore the author’s writing style, the realness of the book, and I will definitely pick up other books written by Kelli Jean.
“Two events had significantly altered the course of my life, and neither of them were anything I desired to discuss with anyone. The first one had cemented within me what I was bound to be—a writer. The second one had set me on the course to the next chapter of my life, and I was forbidden to even acknowledge it.”

Xanthe Malcolm is an author. She has written some paranormal novels under the pen name Elaine H. Ford, which, much to her surprise, gained a big following. Her parents being archeologists, Xanthe has felt drawn to death from an early age. Two dramatic events in her teenage years changed this drawn into something much darker—a fascination to the point of her seeing therapists. Nowadays, Xanthe spends her days writing, helping out her great-aunt at the bookstore, and hanging out with her friends. When she finds the perfect model for the reissue of her books, she didn’t count on the feelings she might feel for the real man behind the picture, Oliver.
“I’d found the perfect Donovan—rustic, swarthy, and heavily bearded. Man, that was an awesome beard! I’d found a man who completely physically defined all I had described of my fictional hero. Beautiful in the manliest way possible, he’d made my panties catch fire.”

Oliver Fairfax is a photographer and the co-owner of an upcoming photo studio/model agency. He doesn’t date, but he has a number of women he can call when the need strikes. Lately, he has started to question himself about the somewhat emptiness of those casual relations, and wonders if there isn’t more. When a publishing company asks him to do a photoshoot for a book cover, it surprises him to learn they want him as the model, not to take the pictures. Meeting Xanthe changes everything Oliver believed in concerning dating and relationships. From the first moment, he knows she’s special.
“Her smile went even brighter, transforming her whole face. Suddenly, she was stunning. That smile…wow. It just lit up the world with small, straight white teeth and full lips that were a natural berry color. Looking closer, I could see she wore no makeup, which was impressive. Her skin was flawless. She’d be a breathtaking subject.”

When Xanthe and Oliver bump into each other for the first time, it results in a messy situation leaving an angry Xanthe. Luckily, when they meet again, it all goes much smoother, both traveling to New York for business creates a bond of sorts. While they are getting to know one another, feelings start to develop, and it turns out Xanthe and Oliver have great chemistry. When truths are revealed and a hurt Xanthe is left behind, a confused Oliver knows it will take a lot to convince her of his good intentions.

I love this story, the developing relationship between Xanthe and Oliver. It felt real, with real emotions, concerns, and insecurities. The couple has a great group of family and friends, who are all supportive and protective. Ten Thousand Words is the first book in a new series. While this book is a contemporary, sweet romance, the future books will be much darker. Hints are being given throughout the book and I’m curious to see what has happened to a couple of characters, and what they are working on nowadays.
“Xanthe smiled down on me, illuminating everything I loved about my life. Taking my hands, she laced our fingers and held them to her heart. “I love you, Oliver.” My eyes burned, and I found it hard to swallow past the emotion clogging my throat. “I love you, too, Xanthe.”

I love Ten Thousand Words, I highly recommend it. I give this story 4.5 stars.

"All I want now is to be a man who is worthy of you, Xanthe."

Ten Thousand Words is the story of Xanthe, a dorky, hipster author, who meets her match in Oliver, her photographer turned cover model.

There are so many of my favourite things here. A sexy love story that draws you in right away, with characters you can't help but love. I absolutely love author stories (a la Mud Vein), because I feel like authors make super interesting and relateable characters. Xanthe is adorkable, but also empowered and self-conscious at the same time. You get dual POV here, and each of the voices were unique enough that I enjoyed that aspect.

Ollie is the definition of swoon-worthy. He becomes enamored with her quite quickly, but I wouldn't classify this as insta-love. He's quick to anger, but also quick to realize his mistakes and make up for them, in the most adorable ways possible.

There are several elements of suspense that keep the plot going. Xanthe has secrets and a lot of past baggage, but I liked the way things were handled for the most part.

I really loved the inclusion of positive LGBTQ references. There are several great side characters, but also smaller lines that could be easily passed-by. For instance, when referencing her fan base, Xanthe notes, "...he'd made my panties catch fire, so my readers - who'd had their panties, or boxers, catch fire while reading about Donovan...". I love that the author made the fan base inclusive!

The secondary characters were varied and well-done. I'm excited to see them again in future books in this soon-to-be series.

I will say though, this one was long! And a bit repetitive. I can't even count how many times Xanthe references her pits and boobs sweating. There is a TON of detail, that sets scenes up very well, but also causes the plot to drag at some points. If you like a lot of detail in your stories, you'll love this one.

One great scene I made note of, was Xanthe sitting with her cat. The author sets the scene, "[the cat] spread out over my tummy, his happy little face between my boobs." The cat also becomes his own little character throughout the book and often made me laugh or smile.

Overall, I definitely recommend Ten Thousand Words. Kelli Jean created some great characters and a story that was unique and engaging!

"I'm not bothering with you, Xanthe. I belong with you."

Ten Thousand Words is one of those rare gems; that's the beauty of Kelli's writing. She has this brilliant method of sweeping you into her mind and bringing you into these worlds that she creates. Worlds that you find yourself wanting to be a part of.

Kelli once again has the knack of making her hero a brooding, intense, jealous, and over protective alpha!! I couldn't get enough of Ollie and his sexy beard #sigh.

Xanthe is my spirit animal , my twin soul . I wish I was as kick ass as every heroine Kelli has written. Seriously, I want them all as my best friends forever!

The love between Oliver and Xanthe is all consuming, heartbreaking, and beautiful all mixed together. Their love isn't perfect. They fight. They learn together. They explore and they grow. It's magical and beautiful, and everything you'd hope to find in love in real life.

This story had so many elements, from mystery to dark, to sexy to funny to angst to romantic.

Kelli Jean has been one of my favorite authors since her NOLA's Own series; and now with this new release she's shown me that no matter what she writes she will own me from beginning to end and well afterwards.

This book has left me speechless. (And craving more!)

Uhmmm yeah, the deliciously bearded Oliver Fairfax.. Just the description of him with his hair and beard all done and the frickin' suspenders on... Talk about creaming your panties.

The main thing in this story is the love between Xanthe and Ollie but there's also this other story developing around it that was so interesting that I had to keep reading. Even when less important things like feeding the kids or doing my homework, came up.
And though this is a standalone, not everything comes to light in this book but will be told in the next couple of books.
I'm totally guessing here but I think it's going to be another book in this series but about a different couple.

All I'll say is - You NEED to read this book. It's extremely well written (and did I mention the bearded hotness of Ollie??)... Do it!!
