Shifters and switches are the perfect match; she hunts vampires, he keeps her from destroying entire populations in a fit of magical rage. These love connections, once common, have died out in modern times. A disaster for humanity.
Until...
The first switch seen in a hundred years flees a room full of shifters, leaving chaos in her wake.
Jameson Montreat is a lonely wolf shifter who had one job that was essential to the protection of the human species. A job he was unable to do. Now, with more vampires throwing their hat into the political ring every day, he can't stop it. He can't kill vampires, none of the shifters can. Only a switch can kill a vampire, and they died out a hundred years ago. But then an impossibly captivating switch walks right into the anti-vampire meeting, turning every shifter head in the place. She is not meant for him, as much as he might need her to be.
Coralie Hamilton is a normal woman, living a normal life, waiting for something big. What that something is, she has no idea, but when some base part of her brain causes her to go temporarily insane and try to stab a politician in the throat with a fountain pen, her future suddenly becomes crystal clear. She's a natural born killer, and the only thing that can calm her killing instincts in the moment is the love of a shifter male who is strong enough to handle her.
Yesterday, she didn't believe in shifters. Today, she's got to choose the one who will keep her sane.
This honestly was a good book. At least what I read of it was good. I stopped at 60%. Wanted to stop at 25% because the h&H hadn't met yet, but kept reading and at 50% I couldn't believe I was supposed to be reading a shifter romance. At 60% and still only a short meeting of the H&h? I've never read a romance novel where the h&H meet at the end of the book and hope I never do again. This was a waste of my time. I won't read the rest of the series simply based on this book. Many people will absolutely love this book and I can understand why. I like to read romance and to me this definitely wasn't it. If you don't mind wating until the end of the book to get your romance then you will absolutely love this book. I don't think I've ever given a book a 1 star rating and it killed me to do it, but this book really pissed me off.
Full confession up front ... I adore Lisa Ladew's writing and have read every one of her books to date. This new series is going to be amazing and I can't wait for the next book to be available. The first book in a series is always full of World building which can feel heavy and slow at times; however, I feel this book #1 still managed to have exciting story elements woven with a wealth of world building. The hero, Jameson, was an old world gentleman who was protective of his woman. He had to learn to let her be herself and accept that he couldn't keep her wrapped up in bubble wrap. The secondary characters are interesting. Prowl sex is hot and intense!
Switch of Fate, Book 1 By: Lisa Ladew, Grace Quillen Narrated by: Will M. Watt Surprising Overall 5 out of 5 stars Performance 5 out of 5 stars Story 4 out of 5 stars Reviewed: 04-29-20
The fun part about Audible Escape is I can try different authors and narrators. To start with the latter, Will M. Watt is an amazing narrator and I found his voice and style very suited for the genre.
I enjoyed the story too, although the ending was a bit abrupt.
Shifters, vampires and switched (witches). The first book in a new series that is exciting and brings is into a new paranormal world where switched kill camps protected by shifters
Title: Switch of Fate 1 Author: Lisa Ladew Genre: Contemporary Adult Romance and Shifter/Fantasy
When I read the blurb I thought it sounded like a really interesting take on shifters and vampires. A type of warrior witch who kills vampires alongside shifters who are like their armor/teammates/whatever else the switches need.
Technically the editing was fine. Not really any problems with misspellings or word placements, etc.... My issue is actually in the writing. It is disjointed. It feels like it skips around. It feels like there is no character development. The whole thing feels immature. I mean the hero and heroine don't even interact until after the book is halfway through. You would think during this time there would be character and world building but it felt like a broken record just different scenes.
The last 10% of the book, our h "fulfills" her destiny then nothing but sex. Before that, no sex from anyone. Yeah sex was descriptive and the author tried to build sexual tension after H & h met but it was more or less awkward, friendly, hey you are a vampire killer and you don't need to know I am a shifter.
The only reason I am giving this book 3 stars is because I liked the story idea and some of the characters have real potential.
This book was okay. I think the author struggled telling a first in the series tale... it was so slow in the beginning. It felt as if the story should've started at another point to help grab the reader's attention better. By the time the action started and it was getting interesting, the story ended. I did enjoy the last 25% quite a bit, which is why I gave it three stars, but I almost gave up on reading it because of the beginning.
When I started this book, I was very disappointed to find it did not pick up where the prequel left off, but what appears to be decades later. I was super interested to know what happens next with Anna and her sister switches and the shifter males. While this book explains what happened to all of the switches, it doesn't explain what happened specifically what happened to the characters from Growler's Gift. Where did they fit into The Reckoning? Did they ever hear from Antoni again (and, if so, was she somehow connected to the vampires, thus explaining the black in her pink magic)? Thus, this book was an adjustment after just having read Growler's Gift.
In this book, everything that existed in Growler's Gift is purely legend to a lot of shifters. Most have no idea what a switch is. They've all been gone for a very long time, after all. Now the steward is awake and it is time to revive the movement to eradicate the vampires.
Jameson is the keeper of the steward. The previous keeper, his uncle, died when he was 11, before his training as the keeper could begin. Over the last century, Jameson has searched for the Steward to no avail. All he has is an ancient book that he cannot read and cannot be damaged. After having a more-or-less vision, he realizes it's time to share what he knows with his fellow shifters, even if they think he's crazy. Much to his surprise, his search for the steward is over as this steward is already being held in lock-up at a nearby police station. After retrieving the steward (whose purpose nobody ever seems to figure out), the search for switches begins.
Coralie is the first switch in over a century and she has no idea what she is or that anything but humans even exist. In her mind, she's just had a mental break of some sort which led her to attempt to kill a man she doesn't know. Once she's been found, Jameson explains at least some of the situation to her. She believes him deep down, but convinces herself she doesn't actually believe him and runs.
Over the course of the story, Coralie, Jameson, and all of the other shifters, begin to navigate this new cause they've suddenly been called to. Now they need to find 14 more...
This book was recommend by Kindle based on other books that I have read, and actually - one look at the guy on the cover and I was sold - I figured even if the book wasn't good I could enjoy looking at him for awhile!!
Turns out the story was pretty good - it started out a little slow, the first fourth of the book maybe was laying some background sorta, but it was a fuzzy background, and that went a little slow, but once you got into the meat of the story it was a lot better.
Jameson is The Keeper - but he never got the chance to learn what that meant, he was to start his training when he turned 12, but on his 11th birthday his world was shattered by the deaths of his family and the former Keeper. He was lost and alone in the world, and he had no idea what he was suppose to be doing. For years he blamed himself for not knowing, when in reality with wasn't his fault.
Coraline, or Cora to most has always had a fascination with vampires, in fact she did her Literature thesis on vampires in literature, but what she didn't know was that she was one of the lost switches of the world, a breed of women born to hunt and kill vampires.
This first book in the Switch of Fate series tells the story as Cora and Jameson fumble together to discover their history and knowledge and be the guardians they were destined to be.
This is well written and is unlike most shifter novels that I have read. It plays on a completely different aspect of the relationship and buts them in more of a heroic although unseen and shadowed role - humans are unaware of shifters, vampires or switches.
Lots of adult themes and intimate interactions, so definitely an adult book - not for the faint of heart.
Jameson Montreat, Lead District Ranger of Nantahala National Forest, a lone wolf who had an important job to do like protecting the humans from vampires failed to do it when he was a teenager. Now there were a lot more vampires throwing their weight around.
He couldn't kill a vampire only a "switch" could but they were lead to believe that the switches died centuries ago. Well that little tidbit got nip when a gorgeous Switch showed up at an anti-vampire meeting.
Coralie "Cora" Hamilton, a Switch who's powers were dormant. She lived her life as a human until one day she snapped and tried to kill someone. She realized that she wasn't just a mere human but something more powerful and dangerous.
She was slowly becoming insane and the only person who could keep her from losing her sanity was the sexy as sin Wolf shifter, Jameson Montreat.
Jameson knew that there was something special about Cora from the moment, he got a sniff of her essence at The Bear Claw diner. She was drawn to him as well, when they finally met, they couldn't deny what was happening between them. Even when the stubborn man tried pushing her away.
Apart they were strong but together, they were a force to be reckoned with. Loved how Cora mastered her new found powers. As well as Jameson. Looking forward to the next installment.
SWITCH OF FATE is the first book in the newest series by Lisa Ladew and Grace Quillen. What an incredible collaboration. It was mind-blowing, steamy and alluring. Two thumbs up!
It seemed a little slow the first couple chapters, but the picked up. Jameson is supposed to be the Keeper but he doesn't know what that means other than he is a very large white wolf. He was too young when the last Keeper died so he didn't know what he needs to do. Cora is a college teacher who is into vampire history. She collects anything that has to do with vampires. One day they sort of meet in a diner, he smells her across the room but he is sidetracked from going to meet her because of an altercation. She hears his voice and is hooked, but she gets a text and has to leave. She does glance back as she walks out the door so she knows what he looks like. She later tries to kill someone but doesn't know why. She gets arrested and put in the looney bin for a couple of days. They discover that she is a switch, a being that was thought extinct. This is about Jameson and Cora working together to get rid of the enemy vampire.
We get a HEA for now because there is a lot of information that we don't know yet. Hopefully Cora's best friend gets involved and we find out what is in the book from the first couple chapters. I look forward to reading more of this series. Keep them coming!
The paranormal world of this book is facing a new world order. The Shifter population has been decimated, the switches who are key to killing vampires are gone and vampires are charming their way into power. Jameson is the Keeper, unfortunately he wasn't trained when the shifter world was attacked, so he only knows pieces of his responsibility and rather distorted versions of any legends. Despite the power of his great white wolf, he knows his world is in trouble. He can't find the fabled Steward he's suppose to protect, they have no switches & he's basically alone. Coraline Is a Junior Professor at the local College. She's fascinated by ancient history, arcane artifacts and Vampires. In this story she finds out why and that she's key to protecting the world. This is a well developed world and the book creates a suspenseful, exciting glimpse into people facing a new, dangerous world, that they intend to prevent from spiraling into devastation. The protaginists may be missing parts of their history, but Ms. Ladew clearly has their past and destiny well planned. Great start to what promises to be a riveting series with intense, sexy and formidable characters.
What a great intro to a new series. Intriguing first chapters, I didn't actually laugh out loud (probably because it was 2am) but I did smile really big, a lot. I loved Carick's awakening and consequent mistakes. Naked in the street yet still having him retain his dignity was an inspiration. I'm with him as far as TVs I often think if I just reached in and pulled some new idiot through we could discuss whatever rubbish they are sprouting in depth. Tell oh vision was cute, you could almost hear him processing that one and his love affair with technology was teenagers today all over the world. The blossoming of Cora and the interesting juxtapositions the two main players chose brought to mind the pre pubescent hormone popping every young male and female go through from 12 onwards. Oh! But what fun waiting them out. Good job Jameson managed to arrive in the nick of time wasn't it? Lol. I will try to wait patiently for Flint' s book. However at the time patience was handed out I was running away from the singing queue and patience couldn't keep up. Sooner the better really. Thank you both for a truely entertaining read
I always stay a shifter book with the expectation that it is going to be an easy read, and quick entertainment. This book surpassed my expectations by miles. The first few chapters are from different POV, taking the reader through situations that culminate at the switch meeting the shifters. Even before they actually meet Coralie and Jameson feel pulled to each other. They are positively combustible together once they do meet. I love the way the author tells this tale. The frustration, drama, action, and s€x, all come together seamlessly to create a story that kept me on the edge of my seat, consuming it all in one sitting. Though I feel like this could be read as a standalone, the underlying arc of the vampire hunting appears to be one that will thread throughout the series. I finished reading this at around 1 am, and trying to talk myself out of immediately starting book 2. Sleep isn't really a necessity. Right? If you like shifter stories or paranormal reads, you will definitly my to give this book a go.
Lisa and Grace have launched the first of a planned 16 book series and we are grateful!!' Coraline learns her world is not as it seems, and her emotions range from lust and rage to loyalty and love.
We meet Jameson, the Keeper, and Carick, the Stewart, who must communicate long lost, world saving information to the shifter community and determine how to challenge the vampires, as they attempt to take over the government in the form of the political Victory party.
Shifter brothers Flint and Bryce, along with a smoking hot rebel, Riot, are just some of the introduced characters that help lead us into the need for the continuation of the series.
Sexy male shifters, who finally realize they may find their hearts desire in the hidden community of Switches, make this a 5 star read for those who like their paranormal romances to begin as smoldering and turn into a sexual inferno! Loved it and am looking forward to SoF book 2❤️
Switch of Fate 1 was fantastic. A wonderful way to start a series and set up everything for future books that I cannot wait to read. H/h worked well, engaging secondary characters, intriguing storyline and premise that makes this a five star PNR read.
Jameson is a shifter that has a job to do, a job he can't do because he doesn't know how. He has to protect humans from Vampires but can't kill them, he needs a switch for that. The glaring problem is all switches died long ago.
Cora is a normal woman hoping to gain tenure at the college she teaches at. Her life spirals out of control when she snaps and tries to kill a local politician. Hoping to find a reasonable explanation she attends a meeting and meets the local shifters.
How do you explain the paranormal world to a human? How does a shifter turn away from the woman he knows is his but cannot have? How does a human reconcile everything she is being told?
This was painful. The 2 MCs don't meet til about 50% or so in. That made this book slow and a little boring. Authors also decided to do an information dump at the beginning with no real background on shifters or the Switches. I mean there's a little but not enough background info on not just the characters but the story. It just didn't go anywhere. Even when they finally meet its not spectacular. He's nice to her but denies his feelings and the fact she's his. I can buy that though because I've read that scenario before. Stuff between them seemed off and forced. I did read til the end. Normally I just stop but wanted to give it a fair shake. I'm reading book 2. It's interesting enough to continue but if it's more of the same then I'm more than likely done. Book 1 of some books can be rough starts....hence 2nd chance and reading the next one.
Jameson is looking for answers and not getting anywhere, until he accidentally stumbles upon a switch....of which no one has seen any in over a hundred years. Unfortunately, it appears the vampires are becoming a larger threat to civilisation that humans aren’t aware, which awakens the Stewart, whom Jameson has spent the past hundred years searching for. However, Cora is reluctant to accept her fate and Jameson is even less reluctant to accept that they are mates😢
I really did enjoy this story, even though it took a while to get through. I honestly think it could have been written to be shorter than it currently is but then it might have lost its overall affect and as readers we might have lost information we needed. I’m hoping now that the foundation of the story is established that the next stories in this series are more succinct.
The first couple of chapter's was slow to begin with but then it started to get interesting. Jameson is a ranger he is also the keeper, he is a big powerful magical white wolf the size of a bear he is dangerous and a badass no nonsense Man. But all of that is forgotten when he lays his eyes on the beauitful Cora all he want to do is love her and protect her.
Cora is a professor at a college she loves her job but all hell breaks loose when she see her first vampire which she does not know he is one all she wants to do is kill him. She thinks she is going mad until she meets Jameson everything becomes clear all she wants to do is embrace her Destiny and become the woman she meant to be. Jameson and Cora makes a lovely couple. I am looking forward to book two.
Switch of Fate by Lisa Ladew is a fresh new concept for shifters, witches and vampires. It's unlike any story I've read in the paranormal genre. It takes a little time to get into the story which is why I gave it 4 stars out of 5. Once the storyline is setup however it progresses pretty fast. The idea that Switches are special witches that are meant to save humans and shifters alike from vampires is interesting. There's a lot of mythology built into the story. I hope that as the series moves forward there will be more explanations of the mythology. There's so much I can imagine happening throughout the series. I can't wait to read book 2 to see which way Lisa decides to go with the story.
This book is amazing and a great start to a new series. Jameson and Cora are so good together. Imagine you're walking into a room and all of a sudden you have the unstoppable urge to kill someone and don't know why. There is an entire world out there you know nothing about. This book will entice you totally you will not be able to put it down. The back story is phenomenallly crafted and gives us an image of what it must have been back in the day. Character development is concise and you want to know each and every shifters story and want them to find their switch. This book leads the way for many more and I can't wait for Carrick's story...it must be fraught with danger and sadness. You will so enjoy this book.
This book was a refreshing change from most paranormal romances. During the first few chapters, we meet Coralie and Jameson and learn about them and learn of their pull to each other before they ever met. The book takes the time to introduce several characters in a short amount of time, but it is not overwhelming. I could tell that there is a lot of mystery around some of the characters. As I have read all the book before writing this review, I knew I was right about some of the characters making a comeback and be important. The only negative I would have to say is some of the important information near the end of the book was rushed. I would have like to see it explained just a little bit more. This is a series that I have on my must-read list.
I only started this series because I'm waiting for the next OTM book. I found this book to be a little different as far as paranormal tales go. At first, I felt that I was losing interest because their wasn't enough action and a lot of "wishful" romance going on. I'm not very patient if something doesn't hold my interest very long. I like paranormal stories with action, romance (preferably with erotic flavoring), and lots of suspense. This tale took a while, but it rose to the level of peaking my interest enough to where I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
Intense, suspenseful and mysterious are just a few ways to describe this book, there is also the magical element. Lots of interesting and mythological events happening as this plot progresses, as well as the building attraction between the characters. Some very sizzling hot scenes that its a wonder the pages don't combust on their own, in other words plenty for everyone to enjoy. The pace is steady and the flow really good throughout. I really loved the whole mix of contrasting subjects form the ancient to the modern, I could believe this could happen. This is wondrous and spiritual a real treat to read, even the fantastical kept me enthralled.
Love the One True Mate series and this one is starting out to be good also. Story starts out a little slow because there's background and scene setting happening, but its necessary to understand the characters. Coralie is the reluctant heroine who thinks she's going crazy and R is the hero who is trying to piece together the story of their purpose. Carrick is just strange...lol. Looking forward to the next book and finding out more of Auntie's story.
Oh my glory! I didn't ever, ever think I'd like a book like this. Usually i'm into dragons and aliens. But, Lisa Ladew and Grace Quillen have written a crazy good tale of vampires, witches, shifters, and a Rip Van Winkle-ish old mountain man. This is a brave new book world for me, and I'm entranced by the forest setting, and the coven that includes mixed species of shifters as well as the 'switch.' So many great characters whose stories are just beginning to unfold. A vampire plot to take over the United States. Wow. Just, wow.
I really enjoyed the story plot overall. It has shifters of all types from a Big White Wolf and even a bird?? After Corie learns what she is - a stitch she freaks out. She took her time trying to understand and tried to run away from it all. But mostly the story feels like a setup for a series. The aftermath of killing one vampire was overboard, I can't believe what would happen to her if she had killed more. It should be interesting, to read the next book about one of the guys.
I am having a hard time picking between which series that Lisa writes that I like the best thanks to this new one. I didn't think it would be this wonderful. Thought it would be similar to her OTM series. It is not. That is what makes it so good.
These characters will draw you in. The development of the story is consistent with no slow parts or tangents that don't get solved. Definitely a book that won't let you out it down until it is done. Worth the 5 stars and more.
This book q book is awesome. I can't wait for the next book. It kept me going all the way till the end. If you sifter books you'll love this one. Lisa you are a wonderful writer. Thank you
This book is awesome.I can't wait for the next book. It kept me going all the way till the end. If you're a fan of Lisa Ladew then you know what I'm talking about. I just love her writings. Thank you Lisa keep writing. Good luck with otm7. Can't wait.
I really enjoyed the book, but I kept feeling like I was missing something. You now kept waiting for something to explosive to happen. I read the book straight thru. Cora tickled me when she went after the senator and was searching for something to kill him with. Then Jameson trying to be the good guy and stay away from Cora. He was too cute. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next book.
I loved this book... Jameson and Cora kicked ass... Did not disappoint... But with the reviews that the book has I KNEW it wouldn't... I recommend this to any that liked Buffy the vampire Slayer... But sorry 18 and over... HOT SEX... Wish book 2 was already out... Looks like this is going to be one of those series that explodes... Don't pass this up you will not be disappointed! 🍆
